7 Foods You Shouldn’t Eat

Did you know that the everyday food you eat can actually harm your body in the long run? Here are seven foods you shouldn’t eat and what you can do about it.
Canned Tomatoes Canned tomatoes can contain a synthetic estrogen called bisphenol-A which is usually found in the resin linings of tin cans. The natural acidity of tomatoes causes BPA to leak into the food. Excess BPA in the body can lead to reproductive problems, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. What you can do: Instead of buying canned tomatoes, buy the ones in glass bottles (which do not need resin linings).
Corn-fed Beef Corn-fed beef is less nutritious. Farmers feed their cattles grains such as corn and soybeans to fatten them up faster for slaughter. But this is in sacrifice of the proper nutrition that we deserve. Cows are herbivores meaning they should be fed grass. Grass-fed beef contains higher levels of beta-carotene, vitamin E, omega-3s, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), calcium, magnesium, and potassium. It’s lower in inflammatory omega-6s and lower in saturated fats which cause heart disease. What you can do: Buy grass-fed beef which can be found at farmer’s markets and special grocers and are usually labeled. If in doubt, ask your butcher.
Microwave Popcorn The linings of the bag contains chemicals which include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) which can cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. Microwaving the bag causes the chemicals to vaporize and blend to your popcorn. What you can do: Pop your own natural kernels in a skillet or make your own microwave popcorn with a paper bag and real butter.
Non-organic Potatoes Root crops such as potatoes absorb herbicides, pesticides and fungicides that end up in the soil. Other than that, they are treated with other chemicals to stop them from sprouting. Of course, some of these chemicals end up in your body when you eat them. Potato farmers even admit that they don’t eat the potatoes they sell but rather have separate crops which are grown untreated with chemicals. What you can do: Buy organic vegetables as much as possible. They may be slightly more expensive but atleast you don’t have to worry about the bonus chemicals.
Farmed Salmon Like corn-fed beef, farmed salmon is less nutritious and more dangerous than those caught in the wild. Farmed salmons are fed soy, poultry litter, and hydrolyzed chicken feathers. Other than that, they contain contaminants, carcinogens, PCBs, brominated flame retardants, high levels of antibiotics and pesticides such as dioxin and DDT. What you can do: Switch to wild-caught Alaska salmon or canned salmon which are almost from wild catch.
Milk Produced with Artificial Hormones Most dairy cattles are treated with recombinant bovine growth hormone called rBGH or rBST, to increase milk production. But such hormones contribute to udder infections and pus in the milk. It also leads to higher levels of a hormone called IGF-1 which may contribute to breast, prostate, and colon cancers. What you can do: Buy organic milk which is produced without growth hormones.
Conventional Apples Conventional apples are grafted, meaning they descended from a single tree so they can maintain their distinctive flavor. However, these apples don’t develop natural resistance to pests and needed to be sprayed frequently with pesticides. These chemicals contribute to cancers and Parkinson’s disease. What you can do: Although the industry maintains that the residues are not harmful, it doesn’t hurt to take preventive measures. Start buying organic apples. But if it can’t be avoided, make sure that the apples are washed and peeled before consuming.
