September 2015 - September 2016 | Tampa, FL | www.builtthings.com Built is a Tampa based design and fabrication shop focused on using the best materials possible to
give the client a quality and lasting product that fits their needs. I was in charge of translating the lead designers project proposals into drawings for in-house wood and metal shop craftsmen to use during the fabrication process. On necessary projects I would produce and execute CNC files required for the job. Projects consisted of small to medium commercial FFE packages, a portable trade show booth and a countless number of custom tables, reception desks, dividers, chairs, railings and cabinets.

Design Process
Spring 2011 Core Design II Adjunct Professor Kuebler Perry | Teaching Assistant Daniel Johnson Abstract analysis of precedents and speculative process models laid the foundation for each successive archetype exploration and final synthesis of the semester. Elements of corner, floor-ceiling and wall conditions were explored to gain an understanding of the sum of parts that create a functional piece of architecture. Numbers of sketch and draft models also facilitated the quick pace of the studio and helped to flush ideas out in a timely fashion. The concept of working drawings and layers of trace helped to guide the many iterations – tracking all changes made. The Materials and Methods course taken in unison with the Design Two studio challenged a group of my peers and I to design, construct and implement a monument to life. Using concrete, wood and metal work to create a full scale functional object. The concepts of materiality and the process of using such materials was expanded into the design process that continued through the semester and beyond.

II South Beach Glider Construction Lab + Artist Residence Miami, Florida | Spring 2011 Core Design II Adjunct Professor Kuebler Perry Teaching Assistant Daniel Johnson
The slot of land that was given for this project was situated between two existing four story buildings. Function of this corridor before construction was a path from city to beach, which was desired to be kept in the programmatic functions of the project. Defining characteristics of the program are a glider construction shop and the visiting artist show rooms. The craftsman that creates these gliders wants his work to be celebrated and the processed viewed. Both artist and craftsman have a residence at the top of the proposal. Path, light, and openness are the main driving forces to shape the functionality of the spaces in the program. Circulation through the site maintains the existing public right-ofway, gives views into the glider shop and passes through the gallery space. Light is allowed to filter down a number of light wells carved out of the main regulating wall, brining a glow to the public spaces below.

Tampa Heights Boat House Tampa, Florida | Fall 2011 Core Design III Professor Shannon Bassett
The site for this project is located at the northern terminus of the Tampa River Walk which is home to recently renovated historic buildings and new park space. The river walk connects the growing Tampa Heights District to the community and energy in downtown Tampa urban development. The site contains a variety of natural and man-made conditions and is slated for further development as the years progress.

Krizanke Secondary School Addition Ljubljana, Slovenia | Summer 2012 Advanced Design A: Touching History Associate Professor Nancy Sanders
To be able to critically intervene in such a historically rich context it’s very important to understand the value and significance of each element placed on the site. Serving as a monastery until 1945, Krizanke was thereafter turned into a festival venue by renowned Slovenian Architect Jože Plečnik. Modern day Krizanke contains a secondary school, offices for Festival Ljubljana, a cafe, a church and the music venue designed by Plečnik. The influence Plečnik had on Krizanke also appears in the small courtyard behind the church, in a series of columns bounding the main courtyard and the small structure on the northwest edge of the block. Contributing multiple buildings and urban schemes to Ljubljana throughout his life, Plečnik is an important figure in the history and culture of Slovenia and can’t be ignored. Currently the secondary school for art and design covers the highest amount of square footage of the remaining monastery structure. As well as bringing the highest head count to the site each day, except on days of large events held in the venue space.

Aguadilla Housing
Puerto Rico | Spring 2013 Modern Housing | Elective Course Associate Professor Michael Halflants This scheme was organized by a community courtyard that opened up to a beach to the west. The courtyard was punctured on three sides of the block to allow residences to enter and pedestrians to pass through. Each entry point also contained vertical circulation to the second story units. All three variety of unit organizations contain a courtyard facing porch and garden space. The units on the courtyard level have a higher level of enclosure and have trellises dividing each unit space. Combination of units allows for the layout of this buildings overall form to be manipulated by removing single units independent of the whole. The breaking up of the corners or the creation of a threshold are achieved by removing a piece of the puzzle.

Beyond Familiar Grounds Fall 2014 | Spring 2015 Masters Project Professor Mark Weston
The research for my masters project was inspired by the great explainers of ideas and their ability to synthesise complex concepts into accessible information for a larger audience. Initially inspired by the clear and wonder evoking scientific writings by Carl Sagan, my pursuit to understand this popularization phenomena continued from my interest in Astronomy to Biology, Particle Physics, Political Science and a category of fiction called magical realism. The work I constructed was focused on the graphic and physical representations of the information I was reading. Creating these narratives from the text was a way to extrapolate these theories into an architectural familiar method of presentation and attempt to gain some new methods of representation. A large part of my research and a continuation of it revolves around the idea of a personal liberal arts education and how it can add to the foundation of an architectural education. I believe this information is valuable because it helps to expand the typical knowledge gained in architectural studios with environmental, scientific, literary and cultural knowledge helping t0 further gain an appreciation for architectures placement in the tapestry of human pursuits.
