“Ham and Eggs in the 21 Century? An Updated Look at What the Past Tells Us about the Future of
RETIRING BABY BOOMERS and an Aging American Society” Wednesday, April 13th at 4:30 p.m. Twilight Auditorium California in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s was an elderly state, much as Florida is today. The combination of an elderly political constituency and the Great Depression produced a variety of bizarre but influential political movements that shook state politics and spilled over into the national arena. In the background was the general lack of a social safety net, particularly for the elderly, and a range of economic theories about how to stimulate the economy. Do these past events presage developments as the baby boomers move into retirement? Are we already seeing echoes of the past in current political movements and issues surrounding health care, social security, and public pensions? Professor Mitchell’s talk will address these and other pressing issues regarding the baby boomers retirement.
