thinking !" PHILOSOPHY

My believe and philosophy is architecture and design as a response to human needs and satisfaction. I believe that experiences and traveling are instruments of knowledge to create new and inspirational conclutions. I see architecture not as a beautiful object, I see architecture as a unity of complex thoughts and intentions merged into space, a space that solves and satisfy each person needs taking into consideration a series of elements such as climate, environment and an urge to find new and unique forms, materials and habitats. I have found in architecture and design a place to explore and materialize my ideas, those ideas that ultimately become a living, interactive and special place.

HUMAN BODIES EVOLUTION

MANIFESTO AND STELARC’S POINT OF VIEW

“We are living in an age of excess and indifference. Of prosthetic augmentation and extended operational systems. An age of Organs Without Bodies” Stelarc How far have we gotten with the steady growth of technology and how it has allowed us to observe our bodies differently? Are we still humans once that we replace all of our organs with prosthesis? Can we consider this technological evolution as the next step in this “natural” process of evolution? The impact that technology has in the actual world and society has been an object of reflection, study and controversy. The digital tool has reached and almost even bury the manual labor. It’s utilization comes to change the logical use where it’s no longer seen as a tool to become a model that enables us to create morphologies and experiments without precedents. The technological growth results positive and succesful when its used in a productive and useful way such as body prosthesis for health and medical purposes, human disabilities or even for design and creation of devices that facilitate daily life however we have reached a point in which it replaces human work, even human body. The operational parameters of the body will no longer be limited by their physiology but will be used instead as a basis fir prosthetic expansion. With the passage of time and the constant acceleration of technological processes a need arises and borns to undress the body and go beyond the physical nature, a phenomenon of body hybridization grows. Cyborg theory begins to grow between constant human transformations. Cybernetic-organism (part machine, part human) its utilized to label a composed creature of organic components and mechanical devices

generally intended to improve the organic portion capabilities by using technology. While Stelarc argues that we can become cyborgs bysimply connecting to the internet without changing anything in our bodies. Stelarc explore the functions, limits and possibilities offered and allowed by the human body, his body. After complex representations, he has redesigned it to increase it’s cyber potential using mechanical prostheses, prosthetics that come to discuss the future of the species and technologically controlled evolution. “I question that the human body is an appropriate mean for our time. It is ill equipped for the technological context. It is not efficient or durable, it spoils often and get tired quickly. I think it’s obsolete and it’s necesary to redesign it“. Stelarc Stelarc is designing a future state in which human species are going to be able to overcome their intellectual and physical limitations through technologic control of it’s own biological evolution tu improve mental and physical capabilities in order to correct what he considers undesirable and unnecessary aspects of the human condition, such as suffering, illness, aging or even mortality.

That’s how, interphase inclusion in the bodies allows the transition from biological individual to robot individual, one man-machine that is able to develop a new reality through genetics and robotics, a reality that we are living in and the one we face today. The body gradually artificialises as it completes itself through these called prostheses and technology theories as extensions of the human body capabilities. Are we still human?, absolutely, we are just becoming modified humans, exceeded. The theoretical Mark Cousins says these prostheses are techniques to extend the centrality of the human being, and that we are starting to see them or at least, Stelarc sees them in a narcissistic way. In addition to that being created by the man, they are flawed because we are designed to make mistakes. I mention Cousins because Stelarc’s performing actions and experiments respond directly to his theories and research, as, if he could complete his body with enough prosthetic extensions he would become a divine person, like a emulation of God. But as Freud quotes in Civilization and it’s dicontents: “The man (Stelarc) has become a prosthetic God. When he puts on all of his artificial organs it’s really amazing, but those organs are not natural and sometimes they cause trouble”.

It’s interesting how the relationship between body and technology problematizes and forces us to re-evaluate our own symbiosis. But he states this, human body it’s obsolete and through technology we are able to redesign our body and alter it’s functions. Body is seem not as a subject but as an object, not an object of desire but a design object. For these reasons amongst others, Stelarc avoids morality or values within the role of technology in society because it is often immersed in a cultural memory or a personal story and he has a mind that goes beyond a morally speaking human being. So, technologies are not more than actual and current strategies to determine, identify and evaluate the world and the body that inhabits and interacts with it, he attempts to redefine what does it mean and questions if continue being a human is important. Man artificialises nature for their own convenience and establishes a close relationship between what’s natural and what’s artificial. However, they have become so close that we tend to confuse the process of evolution of both parts. Humans are not disappearing but they are definitely going to mutate, it’s a change, it’s evolution. It’s so big the role

of technology in our lives that the moment to stop and question ourselves if we are humans or robots is close, but the real question is, are we prepared to deal and accept the changes that this process leads?, can we see this as a natural process or as something way beyond normal?.

in a second, and this are impressive capacities. Transplant inventions, blood transfusions, plastination and cryogenics are just some of the great discoveries that scientific advances have facilitated through out the years and probably a lot of them were’nt even imaginable a few years ago.

“Evolution turned into a human body, a body that started to manipulate the world and built tools and instruments to do it”

My conclusion to all this is, why do we oppose or contradict something that it’s almost given for granted?, it’s just evolution.

Stelarc Nowadays we this as a much more natural theme, as a part of an evolutional process. But, if you’d like to separate it textually we would say that with the increase of technology we are starting a post-evolutionary period in human design. It’s clear that evolution takes millions and millions of years, often with accidental and arbitrary events, random mutations and natural selection, but technology gives us the possibility to acelerate this evolutionary change as a post-evolutionary path. We have to build new models, a new paradigm of what a human body is and it’s function in the world. What being a human is and represents in the actual world, now being a human is probably having pacemaker or an artificial knee and be able to comunicate through the distance

CONSUMPTION PATTERNS A LOOK INTO CONSUMISM & CITIZENS Nestor García Canclini

Growth in consumption patterns, economic strengthening territories, globalization as a promoter of comunication and intercultural relationships has led us to build and structure a more modern and visionary nation’s imaginarium. There’s actually process of deterritorialization undergoing due to strong advance of communication and non-physical means, in which technology hybridize and universalizes culture and national identity. It’s often called americanization, a influence that has develop and flourished by the free trade agreementes which have grown and increased the U.S power in between other cultures that standardized it confusing necesary economic globalization with the hegemonic culture of United States. Openness to international markets should regulate benefit sharing measures, coexistence and knowledge without neglecting each nation’s culture and practices and try not to fall in homogenization or “Americanization”. The ideal would be state not as depositor but as mediator between swaps. We talk of consumption as a collective apropriation of assets, intake, another way to say it, means satisfaying present or future needs and establishes a circular way activity in which human produces so that he can consume that product later on, and at the same time consumption generates production.

We always talk about cultural policies regarding certain aspects of capitalism without taking into account the consumption homogenization that occurs in this current age. We are actually living in an era where consumption surrounds us in a daily basis, shopping has become our number one hobby, the creation of massive window constructions have become in a economic priority, increasing impersonalized places, segregating people and making even bigger the already existing social gap. Even though limits are no longer an issue, people must understand that multiculturism exists even within the same nation and instead of trying to homogenize culture we could take advantage of this diversity to generate more offers to the consumer. Integration and national market competition with other foreign markets can be incentives to improve production and offer but we have to take in consideration local needs in the middle of a world wide deal, and that more powerful markets are coming to compete. Our first responsibility as a society to not be alienated within a collective world would be the rescue of cultural tasks, its dissolution in the market or in politics and to rebuild from civil society one multicultural democratic state.

UCR STUDENTS RESIDENCE

CALLE DE LA AMARGURA “When entrances, terraces, galleries, front yards and gardens overlook the access road, people can continue life in public spaces and will often find others in the course of their daily activities, this may be an important factor to build social life. Jan Gehl

1.

The project is focused on foreign students that come to San JosĂŠ to study in the UCR. It is a permeable and stepped volume in both directions that adapts to the terrain, a triangular lot ubicated just in front of the university parapet.

2.

3.

By presenting this strategic location the project is raised from the public space, is treated as a vertical extension of what happens in the parapet. It emphasizes in this extension and in the dissemination of public-private boundaries, also allows visual level by raising the building two levels, while maintaining the second level permeable with different opening treatments to connect with the lower level. Small businesses that support the surroundings are in the lower level which allow transit through the project.

In the third level there is an exclusive social area shared by the condominium renters. Terraces, study areas, entertainment and cooking area. This level acts as a filter that separates the public area of the private area in addition to visually connect with the university and the zero level.

4.

Four more levels complete the whole project, in this levels we can find shared dormitories which come in to typologies. The first one is a 72 sq.meter dorm with a capacity for 4 people, a bath and a working area. The second one is a 42 sq.meter dorm with capacity for 2 people, a bath and a working area. These are conected by a series of drawbridges as circulation that communicate each other.

This project is born with the need to investigate and explore new constructive systems through a new aplication of traditional materials. In this case the “I beam (concrete) is used not only as a structural beam but as a enclosure and intern division, seeking a way to have a structural logic of support and load distribution while generating spatial quality. The project is an apartment tower that has 2 different typologies of lofts a 2 level one and 3 level one, both responding to the structural complexity that arises and resting on two pillars, one completely structural and one that merely acts as vertical circulation conduit. Una viga diagonal es la que se encarga de dar orden y organizar el espacio y es el elemento que logra romper con la monotoneidad tanto vertical como horizontal, permitiendo mayor apertura a nivel de fachada.

HOUSING UNIT

The topography comes into play and becomes the protagonist by working in a field that has a very steep slope. It’s solved by using terraces to have control of that slope. Managing this terraces is solved in terms of a modular design and a different distribution to each typology A, B and C and their different access. Each shapes responds to the need to accommodate as many condos in the area and maximize it’s capacity always trying to mantein the horizontal house concept. Units are separated by a green and private patio besides having several green common spaces such as a trail along the river.
