Happy Holidays, A-Tech! I hope you’re all enjoying your Winter Break as much as I am! So, while you’re off from (most) school work, don’t forget to make time for service. (I know I’ll be at my local library every so often...) This month I’m overhauling the website (atechkeyclub.weebly.com), too! We’ll be getting comprehensive event recaps, often featured in bulletins, also added to the website for easy reference. Articles and visuals will be more needed there ever before! This month, we’ve focused on raising money and awareness for the Philippines and preparing you guys for the coming Inductions, Elections, and Recognition (all due between January and February). By all means, read on for more information~ And lastly, don’t forget we have an Ice Skating Social coming up. Whether you’ve skated before or not, let me personally attest the experience is pretty great. See you there!

Serving Our Communities

“On November 24, 2013, a handful of volunteers from a variety of high schools including Advanced Technologies Academy and Spring Valley High School attended the PJ 5k and 1-Mile Run. The event was held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which was where the 5k Color Me Rad event was also held. During this event, we helped set up cones to create pathways for the runners and shouted for them as they passed by, to encourage them to keep on going. The event was quite small, but we had fun with it, nonetheless. During the first half of the event, we, the volunteers, set up different pathways for the runners. We set up these paths because there were going to be two different groups using the paths. One group was the 5k Runners. The second group was the 1Mile Walkers. The paths were, in fact, rather successful when it came to dividing the groups, in the end. During the second half of the event, we were split into many groups and scattered across the 5k Run Track. When we got to our little area on the track, we were given a new task: when the 5k'ers would pass by, we would shout to our best ability, encouraging the runners to keep up their great work and to finish the race. This part was the most entertaining and heartwarming as people passing by, hearing our shouts of encouragement, replied, “Thank you.” Next time, we hope even more people would attend this wonderful event!” -

Relief for the Philippines, One Concert at a Time “Damaris Swails, 11th grade, has recently just put on a series of concerts at the Las Vegas Buffet. People who had bought tickets were given a meal and a show performed by her very own family band: The Goldlockers. During the show, they had performed some of their new songs such as “High School Sucks” and older song from Damaris’s childhood such as “Laughter,” which she wrote when she was twelve-years-old. The events on Saturday, December 21st and Sunday, December 22nd had been huge successes. The events were filled with food, fun, singing, and dancing. The Saturday concert for me was amazing, enjoying a night out with friends, eating food until I was full, and having had great music to go along with it too! The event also raised awareness on the Haiyan typhoon: money was donated on the band's behalf, by the restaurant. The Goldlockers have also performed at multiple other events such as the Clark County Fair.” -

Las Vegas Helps the Philippines

Finally Working with the Red Dragon “The Raise Money for the Philippines event was held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. The National Federation of Filipino American Association (NaFFAA) used the help of community service, fundraising, and hard dedication to make this event a reality. A-Tech’s Key Club attributed greatly with such enthusiasm that the leaders of the event were very appreciative and impressed. We set up chairs and tables, and then gave a hand with folding boxes that took donations; after this we sold shirts which raised money for the Philippines. Besides doing charity work, A-Tech students had a fun time on the dance floor listening to many newcomers in the entertainment business; we even got to see a thirteen-year-old boy, who was featured in America’s Got Talent, breakdance. The main performance was the Jabbawockeez, who had shown their impressive talent as they took off from their busy schedule to come and support our cause. This event really showed the true character of nice and caring people who work together to help people less fortunate then themselves.” -

December DCM at A-Tech

“This month’s Division Council Meeting for Division 28 North was held in the very Lecture Hall of our Advanced Technologies Academy, on the second Thursday of December. As usual, we went over a variety of club events that had occurred in the last month, across the division. LTG Christopher Bui reminded us Candidate Training Conference (CTC) was coming up for prospective LTG’s. We also got a small officers workshop regarding the servant leadership upside-down triangle used in Key Club organization. Key to Key Club are its members, at the top of the triangle, followed by club officers, division board, district leadership, and international. (This information was later passed to the rest of our club at the December 19 meeting.)

Although A-Tech didn’t provide any food this time around, we did provide the Session 1 Spirit Stick from Fall Rally 2013. After being ceremoniously restored by A -Tech President Halley Darwin, we phoenixes also got to sign our Spirit Stick after the DCM had finished! Of course, the biggest announcement was the reveal of our new D28N Executive Assistant: our very own Johnny Yang! I had a great time seeing so many new and familiar faces around the division, and until next time, ‘burning up the skies, service never dies!’” -

Daniel Lang (Bulletin Editor)

Executive Assistant’s Introduction

D28N’s Newest Leader “Hello Key Club! This is your Division 28 North Executive Assistant, Johnny Yang. I am super excited to be working with the Division Leadership Team and the best LTG ever! As Executive Assistant, I want to focus on communication between the clubs and the division, so that if a club needs help on elections, DCON, ICON, etc., we can help them. I love Key Club for what it stands for, caring our way of life, because we, as an organization, are able to help others by working together; so I want everyone to continue doing service throughout the year. Key Club allows me to meet other Key Clubbers from different schools and make a difference at the same time. I look forward to serving the Division Leadership Team, the clubs, and the members. Let’s make the rest of this Key Club year amazing!” - Johnny Yang (D28N Executive Assistant)

Candidate Training Conference

Beyond Club Leadership “On December 14, 2013, I went to Centennial High School to attend Candidate Training Conference. It was a really eye opening experience to see how all the things that Lieutenant Governors (LTG’s) do and how demanding their jobs are. We branched into groups and each individual in the group stated why he or she aspired to be LTG and if he or she were elected what his or her goal would be. Each answer differed, and it was really inspiring to see how passionate and how much these individuals have sacrificed to serve their home Key Club. All in all, I still have to weigh the opportunity, but I am considering running as a candidate for the 20142015 school year.” - Halley Darwin (President)

And For Your Efforts...

What does it take to become Member of the Month? “Hello Key Clubbers! I am Eric Munoz, and I am your Member of the Month Chair this year. Being this chair means that each month I recognize Key Club members that have strived to make a difference, through the Member of the Month award. I choose a member every month based on many factors such as active participation, attendance, and hours. I first look at those who are active and attend many events each month; this meaning those who I see attend many events. Not to mention, it also helps if you also do extra service such as helping at hospitals or volunteering at the library. I also check to see who is active in the club as a whole, by doing things such as submitting articles and visuals to our Bulletin Editor, Daniel Lang, often actively participating in meetings, and overall, reflecting the four values that Key Club encourages: character building, caring, leadership, and inclusiveness. After looking at all of these, I pick the Member of the Month, usually by the first or second meeting of the month. You can get recognized as this too, so long as you follow the advice given and actively participate, serving our home, school, and community. So Key Clubbers, participate and serve, and you will get recognized!” -

Eric Munoz (Member of the Month Chair)

Get Recognized at District Convention! “As District Convention is rapidly approaching, now is the time for members in Key Club to be recognized and awarded for their hard work and dedication. As a Key Clubber, there are many options for you to get recognized! As Halley has mentioned, there are awards such as the Sandy Nininger and the Member of the Year that you can apply for. These awards are great ways to give yourself recognition for your dedication to Key Club. As MoM Chair, I know that many of you are capable to apply for these awards! It doesn’t hurt to look into and apply for these awards, so I encourage you to do so. Not to mention, these awards can help put something on your resume that colleges can look at! It also demonstrates how you have strived to create a difference in our home, school, and community. Such awards demonstrate how you have grown as a Key Club member and how you have achieved many goals. So if you are interested, how do you apply for the Member of the Year and Sandy Nininger awards? It’s simple, really; just go to the CNH Cyberkey (cnhkeyclub.org), go to the Recognition tab, and click on contests. Scroll down to the bottom of the members heading, and there you can see the application for both of these awards. Look through the application to know what to expect in applying for an award. All in all, these awards are great opportunities for your hard work and dedication to be recognized by Key Club as a whole.” -
