Bulletin Editor Daniel Lang

Hey A-Tech! Wow, first of all, I am so sorry for the late bulletin! Since articles are still due by the 18th of each month, what I’ve decided to do now is wait a bit until an extended weekend before I do the bulletin. So, the release dates will be a bit staggered now. But, I still intend to have one done each month! Like the bulletin’s new look? That’s thanks to all the articles you guys have been sending me this month! I had to find a way to squeeze in an extra page, so there you have it~ As for the question of the website, I’ll still do what I can to maintain it, but if you guys have any creative ideas you’d like to see implemented, talk to me. I’ll see if I can hook you up. This month’s big scoop is on Fall Rally South 2013. There’s quite a bit of phoenix pride going on, so enjoy! (Oh, and we haven’t forgotten about that video, either.)

Walk to End Alzheimer’s

Service Roars at the Fashion Show Mall “The Alzheimer’s Walk was hosted at the Fashion Show Mall on October 26. I arrived at the Mall before 7 in the morning, which was a little cold outside. I saw other Key Clubs sign-in for the event. Since I arrived earlier than expected, I decided to walk around and see the booths that were set up. I ran into Ben and Mark, and walked with them on the first floor. My friends from other Key Clubs were planning to join this event, so I was waiting for them. I also ran into Tommy on the way and saw Jaya! The other volunteers started to lead us to our positions to guide the walkers at around 8. Mark, Daniel Cruz, Sae, and other A-Tech Key Clubbers joined our group stationed on the first floor nearby Forever21 and Starbucks. The walk started at around 9, and we started to see walkers! We cheered on the walkers until about 11. The Alzheimer’s Walk was the first event I volunteered at for Key Club! It was a very memorable experience with time spent with my friends.” -

Service for the Holidays More like Christmas “Swag!” “So we went to Operation Christmas “Swag” (Child) without any officers to keep us in check. That means we were delinquents. Because Daniel wasn't here, I decided to become the new "Daniel Lang." Sorry, I don't own a real camera. I took these pics with a potato. Gomenasai (so sorry). So yeah, basically, we made gifts for kids that never had presents before. It was a shoe box with twelve items of swag. Included were one coloring book, one notebook, one pen, one pencil, one sharpener, one miscellaneous school supply item, one stuffed toy, one clothing item, two other toys, another miscellaneous item, and a bag of candy. They also gave us free food and drinks. Very nice. The entire time was fun. We made so many jokes. Everyone was like super slow. Will and I were racing by stuffing the boxes as fast as we could, but Mark's terrorism slowed us down.” -

Robert Macaibay (10th grade) Día de Muertos “Día de Muertos was a festival held in the Springs Preserve from November 1-3. However, we volunteered on the last day, November 3rd. It lasted until 3pm all the way to 9pm. It was an enjoyable event to experience! I learned about many other facts and traditions performed during Día de Muertos. My group had volunteered for one of the arts and crafts sessions for the event. We quickly learned how to make paper flowers and papel picado, which means “perforated paper,” to teach other people how to make it. Making papel picado had the same method as creating a paper snowflake, so teaching the techniques was simple. During the first hour, our craft room was very slow. However, in two hours, it exponentially started picking up. It was getting very busy to the point that people had to wait a few minutes for a table! It was fun teaching many people how to make the paper flowers and the papel picado. Even until the end of the festival, our room was hectic. It was one of the first events I volunteered for and it was a memorable experience for me!” -

Fall Rally South 2013

“So for anyone who doesn’t know, Fall Rally South is a gathering of clubs from across the CNH District of California, Nevada, and Hawaii, where we raise money for PTP (Pediatric Trauma Program), compete in glorious battle at the Spirit Rally, and spread our joy across Six Flags: Magic Mountain. Memories made are cherished for years to come. For Division 28 North, we’d met up at Western High School a few hours past midnight, where we’d received our 2013 Phoenix Fireball shirts and rehearsed our new cheers. After a long bus ride filled with games and song, we’d arrived in forested Valencia, California, around 8am. Before long, we’d disembarked for the park entrance, and once inside, we received this year’s Spirit Gear: orange, red, and yellow pom-poms with some kick’n orange shades. All around, clubs from across the district had gathered, and I made it my goal to seek out my fellow Key Leaders and people I’d met at DCM’s, RTC, and so on. (Oh, and I certainly succeeded!) Fast-forward to 9:40am, and it was time for us to do battle in the Golden Bear Theater’s Spirit Rally, Session 1. The session began, as they tend to do, with all divisions screaming their souls out to CNH District Board and our LTG’s. The session was led by our District Governor Victoria Lai and the rest of her board. After the LTG Auction for PTP, the moment had come for the Phoenixes of D28N to show our true spirit. Under the leadership of LTG Christopher Bui, we roared our Super-Awesome Phoenix Cheer and Phoenix Fireball for all to hear. We exhausted every last effort in our bodies, and with all our might, the effort paid off. The Spirit Stick from Fall Rally South 2013, Session 1, was ours. The rest of the day was as you might expect for a colossal amusement park. This year, I spent my time mainly among my division, rather than trying to get in as many rides as I could (as in previous years). I still rode a lot of rides, though! It was great to see so many new and old faces. This year, I hugged more free-hug people (even carrying a Free-Hug Sign myself), took more selfies (even my own), and bought more merchandise than ever before! I cannot wait for next year, which, sadly, will be my last.

Phoenixes Throughout the Day

Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Key Club and NHS Bring Service to the Streets “On November 17th, A-Tech’s Key Club, along with National Honor Society, attended the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. The event was located at the build site of the new SLS casino. During this event, we handed out water cups to the marathon runners, which although may seem boring, was in fact a very fun and exciting event. We were split up into groups of six to eight people, and each group had four tables. The marathon didn’t start at our leg until around 3:30pm, and we’d arrived at 1:30pm. There was an enormous water tank, known by its name, The Water Monster. We had two hoses for each station, and two people would place water into the cups as we placed down the cups in a grid pattern. Finally, when it seemed like we were done, we were told that there had to be to be three layers of cups. Luckily, our station finished it before the runners appeared. At around 3:30pm, the first runners appeared! At first, we were surprised by how few there were, but quickly, the amount of runners escalated to a point where we were burning through water cups faster than these runners were burning calories. Finally, at around 7:30pm, the last runners passed by us; it was clean-up time. With a glove in one hand, and a shovel in the other, everyone contributes to clean up our section of The Strip. By the very end of it, any tables that are left with water cups still on them were to be flipped over by those responsible for the station. Luckily, our table got to be one of those! After the clean-up crew arrived, we were free to go. Most of us dispersed into our rides as we left the Strip. A few of us, myself included, walked over to a near McDonald’s and hung out there until our parents arrived. Although I only left at 9:30pm and got home at 10:30pm, Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon was definitely one of my favorite events so far. For those of you who went, I hope to see you guys next year. For those who didn’t go, I would definitely recommend you go next year. Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon is one of the best events that I have gone to thus far, without doubt!” -
