A Letter from the Editor, Daniel Lang

Hey A-Tech! Congratulations! We survived October, and soon, the first quarter of the school year! This newest bulletin features some never-before-seen graphical designs, thanks to some tricks I learned at RTC’s Bulletin Editor workshop, and thanks to Microsoft Publisher, provided to me by the awesome of Anutr Sivakoses. Later this month, the website (at atechkeyclub.weebly.com) will be getting some major updates, including Event Galleries. Get excited! In this month’s newsletter, we focus on RTC 2013, Greek Food Festival, and preparations for Fall Rally South. This month’s photos are provided by Titian Poon, KC Cannon, Johnny Yang, Brian Vu, and myself. Expect great things, and Happy Halloween!

Region 5 Training Conference 2013

“Like Boom! We’re gonna rock this house!” 10/12/13 “Hold up wait a minute! We still have more spirit in it!” said nobody ever after they poured every last ounce of their spirit into the Region Training Conference held at Centennial High School. This differed from the past years’ RTC’s, usually held at Cimarron Memorial High School. The start of the event was filled with spirit as the clubs, starting with Liberty, crossed from the school dirt lot into the Centennial’s front doors. As the schools filed into the gym, there were enormous clubs such as Clark High School’s, while some were not as large, but were still as powerful such as Coral Academy’s Key Club. For Group 2, the day started off with presentations on how to run for positions, with current officers taking the stage and sharing their experiences. The next presentation was on what it means to be members of the Kiwanis Family and our roles in it. Honey-baked ham catered the lunches this year in form of sandwiches. (There were multiple other variants such as ham, turkey, and vegetarian, too.) Finally, one of the highlights of the day was the Spirit Rally, featuring notables such as Liberty, cheering to their red white and blue, East Tech cheering to their titans, and the Advanced Technologies Academy pouring their hearts out (which I can say from a personal experience) to their cheer “Fire It Up.” Although many of teams did not make it (including A-Tech), I can say from personal experience that I learned what it was to be part of a real Key Club Ohana, a true family. The last highlight of the day was dancing till there was no more spirit in it, and playing Ride That Pony (started, yet again, by A-Tech and Clark), bonding, energizing, and intermingling with other schools’ Key Clubs. I want to congratulate all teams that won their respective spirit sticks, and next year, the Mavericks will truly be “Blazing, ignited and can’t be beat!” - Anutr Sivakoses (A-Tech 9th grade)

D28N LTG Christopher Bui “I'm so proud of all you!!! The whole day, I was hearing how spirited A-TECH was, and I am just so proud that I have such an amazing home club behind me. I really do hope you enjoyed RTC because I wanted to make it the best I could for all of you. It is truly sad to say that this will be my last RTC, but it's okay because I know that this club will always be a solid club not matter what. Keep the A-TECH legacy alive.”

President Halley Darwin “Hi, guys! I just want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart! We worked so hard, and we really did win in the end because we worked as a team, showed our spirit, learned more about RTC, cheered our hearts out, ate a fantastic dinner, danced our butts off, and overall WE HAD AN AMAZING DAY! So thank you A-TECH KEY CLUB! Thank you for the big bear hug at the end! Thank you for telling me so many wonderful things! Lastly, thank you for giving it all you had! Thank you for making it yet another memorable year at RTC and I am really proud of all of you! Thank you, guys!”

sophomore Johnny Yang “This weekend was one of the best weekends I’ve had so far, filled with memories, and I hope you guys felt the same way. We were all so spirited throughout the day, hearing us chant the "A-WHAT" cheer so loud. RTC is an event that I believe everyone in high school should go to at least once. Hope everyone had fun yesterday!”

freshman Anutr Sivakoses “This RTC was an amazing experience for me! Thank you everybody for the "How do you feel" questions, and the awkward turtle challenge, Allison and Benjamin. And I do believe that even though we didn’t make it to the last round to fight, we poured our hearts and souls into it, so in a way, we did win! And it is a lesson learned for us freshmen too: next year, We WILL win that awkwardly nice stick we call a Spirit Stick!”

Training for RTC

Hold up, Wait a Minute, Let Me Put Some Booty in It! (Freshman PoV)

09/26/13 “As October twelfth rolls around, schools are now in a mad dash to practice and perfect their cheers for the upcoming Regional Training Conference, or RTC for short. The first practice session for said event took place on the 26th of September, and the event, while long, produced more than effective results. As students piled into the gym, they were separated into groups. For the freshmen, it was totally new experience eventwise, and cheer-wise. Led by the board officers of A-Tech’s Key Club and Christopher Bui, the Lieutenant Governor of Division 28 North, the freshmen learned how to express feelings by learning “How Do You Feel”, learned to bump their tracks with “Outta Their Minds”, and finally, how to express teamwork by stomping and clapping to “Fire it Up”. Not only did the freshmen take home some new knowledge on the cheers, but they also took home some hilariously memorable quotes. Gabriel Esguerra, 9, said that the most memorable line was when Christopher Bui was teaching them “How Do You Feel” and had exclaimed halfway through the cheer that “You freshman have to put more booty in it!” Overall, the RTC prep was an interesting and fun event, as Floyd Ngov, Sergeant at Arms had said, “'I’m happy to see all the spirit and new faces at the RTC prep, and I am excited for what's to come at RTC.” Even if you aren’t going to RTC, there is more room for everyone to learn the cheers, and if you are going to RTC, keep in mind that you have to attend at least two training sessions. Members got closer to each other; they competed to see which grade had the most spirit, and they learned what it took to be supernatural.” - Anutr Sivakoses (9th grade)

Greek Food Festival 2013

Would You Like Tzatziki* with that? 09/29/13 “Spanning three days at the Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, the Greek food festival was recently held on the 27th, 28th and 29th of September. With varying cuisines served such as gyro (yee -ro), grilled pita bread with slices of meat dubbed as gyro meat, topped off tomatoes and onions, and finally, slathered with Tzatziki (Zah-ZEEK-KEE) sauce (sour cream and onion). Said gyro was also served with ‘Greek’ Fries (potato fries with lemon and spices). Not only was there food, there was also the entertainment, which included, dancing, singing, and yelling out traditional Greek word such as “OPA!” (Ope-Ah). Church tours were also given and visitors were led in shown the wonderful murals that the church had to offer. Also a couple of lucky winners came home with some of the following prizes from the raffle: a 2014 Mercedes Benz of their choice, an iPad, and many more prizes! Benjamin Stevens, 10th, said “My experiences at the festival were awesome and super epic. I was wrapping the gyros at the gyro stand and it was awesome. The best part was the free food!” All in all volunteering at the festival not only got you free food, but you got the experience to make the food, experience the culture, and meet Grecian immigrants who will tell you amazing stories. Sound like fun? If it does, Key Club hopes to catch you working at one of the gyros or even Tzatziki Stand! *Tzatziki: Sour Cream mixed with Chives and diced onions.” Anutr Sivakoses (9th grade)
