A Letter from the Editor, Daniel Lang

Hey A-Tech, Firstly, I’d like to welcome our new members! (There’s a special note for you on the next page.) As for everyone else, welcome back to Key Club! We’re looking forward to a great year ahead of us, and we can’t wait to get going! (If you prefer not to use Facebook, you can stay up-to-date with our website at atechkeyclub.weebly.com.) This month, we have an extended newsletter, featuring bios personally written by the board officers for YOU! In addition, the Events Calendar is loaded with awesome things, and we’ve the details on last month’s amazing ice skating social, too! So go check it out!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead

For the New Members

From your Division 28 North LTG: “Hello Key Clubbers! My name is Christopher Bui and I am so excited for this new school year. This year will be filled with new experiences, new friends, and best of all new memories. Please take my advice and enjoy every last bit of it. With this year never forget that service is our number one priority. We are amazing because we help others and that's what we plan to do this year. Never forget that this organization is meant to teach, produce growth, and most of all change peoples’ lives.”

Opportunity Village and Ice Skating

“What better way to spend the break than ice skating with fellow Key Clubbers? Summer can be a tough time putting together events, but Hung (VP of Membership) and Floyd (SAA) of A-Tech Key Club decided that wasn’t going to stop them! On 27 July 2013, A-Tech had an ice skating event which brought together 30~ members from across the valley to the Las Vegas Ice Center. In addition to current members of ATech Key Club, the event also drew graduates from last year and members from Rancho’s Key Club, too! For many others and I, this was our first time ice skating. And while it certainly was no walk-in-thepark, the experience was so memorable. For me, I was able to grasp ice skating pretty quickly, since it was much like roller skating – just balance and a bit of force to get you moving. However, there some who were not so lucky. In addition to hanging out with the guys I already knew, I made sure to talk to those I’d never met before! (After all, that’s how inclusiveness works.) So while I certainly skated on my own, I constantly tried to help others where I could. And though we all had our fair share of falls, by never giving up, I’d say we were skating like pros when the day was over. For those who were able to come, it was a bonding experience I won’t soon forget! -

Daniel Lang (Bulletin Editor)

“The Saturday of Service is a wonderful event that runs through June to October at Opportunity Village. I attended one Saturday along with my amazing companions: Daniel Lang, Kaili Canon, and Gabby DeVera. We were assigned the tasks of carving pumpkins for their Halloween event and getting the maze ready to be painted. Despite it being another typical, hot Vegas day, it was a day full of fun because of the people I was with! To say the least, my experience at the Saturday of Service was not only amazing due to the fact that we were helping hundreds of adults with mental disabilities, but also because I spent the day bonding with some incredible people. If I may add, this service event is great because the qualifications for a senior chord for Key Club are 50 hours of service and 80% attendance for two years.” - Halley Darwin (President)

Meet Your Officers: Presidents President Halley Darwin “During the first few weeks of high school as a freshman, the first club that captured my attention was Key Club. The chant "I FEEL GOOD OH I FEEL SO GOOD, I FEEL FINE ALL OF THE TIME UNGA UNGA UNGA UNGA UNGA WOOO" empowered me as a student, as a young woman, and it ultimately empowered me as a Division 28 North Phoenix. Key Club is a place to grow with friends through the vehicle of service and I've stuck with it throughout the years because it truly has become my second family. Now, looking back, the culmination of every Key Club event I have ever attended has helped me make the transition from the shy freshman version of myself to the leader I am today! WHY join Key Club!?? Well, Key Club isn't a club where we make keys, but it surely does open doors and helps you become the best you, you can be!”

Vice President of Service Allison Lenon “Throughout middle school, my older cousins would continuously rave about this thing called "Key Club." They made it sound like this "Key Club" was greatest part of high school! When I walked into my first Key Club meeting two years ago, I was instantly drawn in by the members' enthusiasm. It didn't take long for me to realize that my cousins were right. Because of Key Club, I've learned how to be more confident and allowed myself to become a leader. Hello! I'm Allison Lenon, your Vice President of Service. Let me help you make Key Club the best part of your high school career.”

Vice President of Membership Hung Le “Hi everyone, my name is Hung Le, and I’m your Vice President of Membership for the upcoming year. My interests are anime, sleeping, and eating (but mostly sleeping). I first got interested in Key Club during Freshman Orientation, where the people at the booth were cheering and being friendly towards everyone. I felt like I needed to be that person to give a helping hand to everyone and to try to make them BEE Less Awkward! My position in Key Club consists of recruiting members, trying to keep the active member count steady, and of course: helping the president. I’m easy to talk to, so don’t be shy if you have any questions on any service events. I really hope to connect with all of the members and ensure that they have as many opportunities for service events as possible. I look forward to working with everyone!”

Meet Your Officers: Support Secretary Jessica Marie Dimalanta “My name is Jessica Marie and I am your club secretary this year! When I was younger I was taught that I should always aim to put in every effort into everything I've driven for. Like many other Key Clubbers, I have a will to change the world. I am one voice but in Key Club, I am as loud as the crowd. Key Club changed me for the better. It has made me to be more outgoing, friendly & encouraged me to take a position to lead. I've been volunteering since I was younger, but I can take up service with my friends now, too! My job is to keep track of all hours and dates and be the backbone of the group. I'm here for any questions or clarifications, and I don't bite either. It'll be so lovely to be working with you guys! I'm very excited and it's nice to meet you all.”

Treasurer Brandon Owens “Hey, Key Clubbers! It’s your Treasurer here Brandon Owens. During my first Key Club meeting I decided that the club held amazing opportunities for me. Freshman year in Key Club showed me what it means to give back to the community in a fun spirited way. I decided to stay in the club next year because of what happened at the Greek Food Festival. My aunt personally was helped by the volunteers there and I discovered how much we really aid. So later in the year I decided to be even more involved by becoming your Treasurer. As Treasurer my duties in short involve encouraging you guys to pay your dues, keeping track of club funds, and setting up fundraisers. I look forward to serving you guys this term!!”

Bulletin Editor Daniel Lang “I joined Key Club as a freshman after attending the first 2011-2012 meeting. I stay because of the service activities, the awesome socials, boundless spirit, huge conventions, and amazing people. Key Club has given me opportunities to donate my time and energy into helping others, and it has also helped me become much more outgoing. During my years of Key Club, I’ve met all sorts of members across Cali-Nev-Ha and even many within the valley. Being a Graphics major, I became bulletin editor, and I especially emphasize the “inclusiveness” portion of Key Club. Key Leader 2013 had a huge impact on my perspective, and I highly recommend people attending at least once. But as bulletin editor, I maintain our website, take event photos, and compile a monthly newsletter highlighting the different happenings at A-Tech Key Club. It’s a great job, and I look forward to meeting the new members!”

Meet Your Officers: Member Relations Sergeant-at-Arms Steffi Marie

Member of the Month Chair Eric Munoz

“Hey guys! My name is Eric Munoz and I’m a junior. I have been in Key Club since my freshman year and I haven’t looked back since. Key Club has given an amazing experience that is indescribable and like no other. I have been able to serve my community and meet great new people. I encourage people to join Key Club as it can help you know what it means to serve people and make a difference. And at the same time you can meet amazing people while doing so. My job is to help recognize members at the end of the month to choose a Member of the Month (a Key Clubber that has shown outstanding service throughout the month). I also help promote the club, so that more people can become Key Clubbers and make a difference. I hope that we all have an amazing year, Key Clubbers.”

“I attended my first Key Club event in the 8th grade when my brother took me to help clean up the park. Ever since that day, I was hooked. The idea of helping out the community while meeting new people seemed like so much fun. Fast forward two years and I’ve fallen in love with Key Club! Transitioning into high school was a nervewracking experience and I was super shy but Key Club allowed me to break out of my shell. One of the best things about Key Club is that everyone can be themselves! We’re all here to make a difference and have fun. I’ve made so many amazing friends not only at A-Tech, but from other schools because of Key Club. It really does bring everyone together. I decided to join the board because I wanted to be more involved in this amazing club. I definitely can’t wait for this upcoming year.”

Sergeant-at-Arms Floyd Ngov

“I joined Key Club because I saw it as an opportunity to be a part of a great organization that involved me and my friends having fun and helping our community. I've stayed in Key Club because I had a great experience being in the club for two years now. I have met tons of new friends through Key Club and learned many ways that I can help better my community. Attending service events for me was a really good way to hang out with my friends and do our part in making our community better. In my position, I am in charge of helping to keep our Key Club spirit alive and keeping the club under control when needed. I am also obligated to help the Key Club board in any way I can to help better our club. I'm looking forward to experiencing my first year as a Key Club officer and working with the new members joining our Key Club.”
