Demi Moore has never been shy about getting her gear off to wow the world. The strip show started in 1991 when she posed in all her naked, pregnant glory for the cover of Vanity Fair magazine, two months before the birth of daughter Scout. Five years later she peeled off on US TV’s Late Show With David Letterman to reveal a killer body in a sequinned bikini and to promote her film Striptease. More than a few cynics, however, suggested Demi was just as likely flipping the bird at paparazzi photos that had recently been published of her on the beach, with what looked remarkably like chunky, cellulite-laden buttocks and thighs. Cut to 2003 and Demi, now 40, struts from the surf in another itsy-bitsy bikini for Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, blowing her three younger co-stars, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore, out of the water and putting her own film career back on the boil. This year, on the cusp of 50 – okay, she’s 48 on November 11 – and married to a guy 15 years her junior, Demi’s at it again. Although snapping photos of yourself in a barely there bikini and posting them on social networking wonder-site Twitter seems a bit, well, show-offish, it doesn’t alter the fact that the woman has the body of a girl less than half her age. From head to toe, Demi looks better – younger, even – than she did 20 years ago. The Twitter incident has divided those who care into two distinct camps – the Whys? and the Wows! – but the burning question for me is How?! Demi doesn’t deny having had “help” – but nor does she specifically admit to it. We ask the experts to speculate on what she and her fellow superstars may have had done to remain frozen in time; see ‘Ageless Celebs’ on page 10. Younger You magazine is the first, proud print venture of the website we launched in April to provide all the latest information on anti-ageing procedures, products and breakthroughs for … a younger you. If you’re completely happy with the way you look, congrats, you’re in an enviable place. Most people we speak to, however, have “something” they’d like to improve, to look and feel more youthful and in the process enhance their confidence and sense of wellbeing. We’re not suggesting you strive to emulate the feats of the Demis or Madonnas – after all, their careers depend on their looks – but you’re never too old or young to look a better version of yourself.

Hollywood’s most famous “cougar”, Demi Moore, 47, superstar wife of actor-producer Ashton Kutcher, 32, consistently denies she’s had facial plastic surgery, despite looking younger every year – and better than she did 20 years ago. Medical professionals suggest that while she may have not gone under “the knife” (although one Victorian cosmetic physician, after studying photographs, said, “she appears to have had a mini facelift with neck lift and either blepharoplasty – eye lift – or a brow lift”), Demi has not been averse to non-surgical anti-ageing treatments. Comparing photos of Demi in the early ’90s with those taken recently, Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Paul Gerarchi says, “Given that she has only minor wrinkling around her eyes and little
demi moore
movement of her forehead during smiling shots, it’s likely that Demi is having Botox injected into these areas. In addition, her eyebrows appear not to have dropped one bit since 1992. It’s most likely that this has been achieved with injectable fillers. “Alternatively, micro-droplet fat injections could be used to achieve the same result. If you look closely at the area below Demi’s eyes, you’ll notice that there are no signs of the hollowing in this region that occurs with age, known as nasojugal grooves. This area is also likely to have been filled with cosmetic fillers.”

Demi has admitted to having had “work” on her body (if not her face) and is reported to have spent as much as $500,000 on a total body overhaul, including liposculpting and skin tightening/cellulitebusting treatments such as VelaShape (see page 60) and Hypoxi (page 63) on the hips, stomach and thighs. She may also have had a breast lift, but Sydney cosmetic physician Dr Gabrielle Caswell says, “She definitely hasn’t gone overboard with her bosoms and she also obviously works out to maintain her results.” Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Michael Miroshnik adds Demi may have had body-contouring surgery, such as a tummy tuck and medial/lateral thigh lifts. Looking at a photo supplied of Demi emerging from the surf in a bikini last year, Dr Miroshnik says, “You can almost make out a fine line scar following a high-cut French bikini line, which is how many Americans like to do tummy tucks. In Australia we keep incisions very low.” MORE ›
NO JUDGEMENT “I’d never judge those who have [had plastic surgery],” Demi said last year. “But I don’t like the idea of having an operation to hold up the ageing process. It’s a way to combat your neurosis. The scalpel won’t make you happy. For now I prefer to be a beautiful woman of my age than try desperately to look 30.”
Demi recently showed off her bikini body on Twitter

Elizabeth Hurley still looks stunning at the age of 45, but how much of that is down to the actress’s own good fortune? “Although Liz is rumoured to have had a nose job, I don’t see any definite evidence of this,” says Dr Paul Gerarchi. “However, her plumper, fuller lips are highly suggestive of injectable filler. It also appears she has undergone some cosmetic dentistry. “Liz may also have indulged in a small

amount of filler in other areas of her face, particularly around her eyes. She appears very beautiful and natural in this photo and any intervention she may have had is of a high quality.” It’s also evident that good eyebrow shaping works wonders for a girl!
1989
SHOW STEALER Little-known in the late ’80s, Liz hit headlines in 1994 with a plunging black Versace dress held together with gold safety pins. The dress (and two of her best assets) stole the show from then-boyfriend Hugh Grant at the London premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral. Today she looks better than ever. 12

“Madonna has a very rejuvenated look for a woman in her early 50s,” says Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Robert Drielsma. “I think a full makeover – with neck and lower facelift, lower and upper eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) and brow lift – has been done, possibly as well as laser resurfacing of her skin. Her cheekbones look more prominent and I wonder if she’s had cheek implants. Maintenance Botox is also likely.” Dr Paul Gerarchi adds, “Madonna’s
upper eyelid surgery has caused some hollowing in this region, which I don’t think is ideal. In addition, her lower eyelid area remains very smooth and full. This may have been achieved with injectable fillers and laser treatments, though I suspect she’s had a lower eyelid blepharoplasty procedure, as suggested by the slight pulling down of the outer part of her left lower eyelid. “Madonna’s nose also has a postsurgical appearance; in particular, her nostril width has been narrowed and the bridge of her nose has lost some of its natural light reflexes.”

CONSTANT REINVENTION The grungy Material Girl, who shot to fame in the mid-80s, has reinvented her image several times over the ensuing 25 years, and today’s look is her sleekest, most sophisticated and finely honed so far. “In my opinion, Madonna looks better in her ‘older’ photo [taken as she arrived for her 52nd birthday party in London] than in the younger one,” says cosmetic surgeon Dr Colin Moore. sarah jessica parker “I’m not sure that Sarah Jessica Parker has had much in the way of cosmetic procedures,” says Dr Paul Gerarchi. “The tip of her nose appears a little thinner and more refined than when she was in her early 20s, but this may be a lighting effect of the photograph. “Alternatively a ‘tip rhinoplasty’ procedure may have been performed. Also of note is the absence of the mole on the right side of her chin. “Otherwise, Sarah demonstrates many of the facial characteristics consistent with her age. In her more recent photograph she clearly benefits from the skills of a good make-up artist.” US plastic surgeon Dr Anthony Youn
‘Her surgeon was very conservative’

remarks that if SJP, 45, has indeed had a nose job “then her surgeon was very conservative, so as to not change her look too much. The worst thing that could happen to her would be what happened to [Dirty Dancing star] Jennifer Grey, where the nose was altered so much that she was not recognisable as her old self. “This has obviously not happened to Sarah Jessica Parker. I do think she’s ageing very gracefully, and actually looks better now than she did 15 or 20 years ago.” Dr Robert Drielsma adds, “Good skincare and judicious use of Botox are also helping!” Looks like that’s a lesson for all of us.
LEANER AND LOVELIER Sex and The City has clearly been very been very therapeutic for Sarah Jessica who, at 45, looks barely different from her twentysomething self. Apart from the loss of facial puppy fat (oh, and the disappearance of her signature mole from her chin) the greatest changes are in the grooming. SJP’s locks these days are impeccably tousled tresses, as opposed to being merely tousled, and the make-up is, as always, picture perfect. Carrie Bradshaw herself would be proud. 14

Whatever procedures and treatments Jennifer Aniston, 41, may have had to remain looking in her mid 20s, there’s no escaping the fact she simply exudes a money-can’t-buy youthfulness. From her trademark tresses to her toes, she always looks shiny and clean, her skin glowing. “To me, the most obvious change in Jennifer’s face is her nose,” says Dr Paul Gerarchi. “Her more recent photo shows a much slimmer and more refined nose, something which does not occur naturally with age and is highly suggestive of having had nasal plastic surgery (rhinoplasty). “She’s also fuller under her eyes, particularly in the area of her tear troughs. This suggests that she has had injectable fillers placed in this region.
JENNIFER ANISTON
“Jennifer is mid-animation in her more recent photo, with not much wrinkling around the eyes or between her eyebrows, suggesting that she may be using Botox or a similar product,” he adds. “Jen has apparently admitted to having a septoplasty performed to improve her breathing,” says US plastic surgeon Dr Anthony Youn. 1990 “This is a common surgery which can also straighten a crooked nose as a by-product of repairing the septum. Her ‘after’ photos do appear to show her nose to be straighter and thinner than before. It looks like her surgeon did a very nice job.”
GREAT GROOMING Jennifer’s hair and make-up are more sophisticated today, says Gold Coast cosmetic physician Dr John Flynn. ”Her clear complexion could be the result of good skincare. Jen’s bottom lip is less full than in the former photograph and it’s normal for lips to become less plump as you age. If she wanted, she could put fillers into the lip.” MORE › 15

Rhonda Burchmore never imagined that she’d be stripping off to celebrate her 50th birthday. But the red-haired star of stage and screen doesn’t shy away from a challenge, so when her role in the Australian production of Calendar Girls required her to bare all on stage, she didn’t think twice. “It’s all in the placement of the props,” she laughs. “If they’re an inch off cue I’m in big trouble!” There’s not a skerrick of cellulite on her
rhonda burchmore
towering legs and, with an enviably line-free face, Rhonda’s a poster-girl for anti-ageing. She says a good daily beauty routine and challenging herself physically and mentally are the secrets of keeping age at bay. “I’ve always kept fit with exercise, and I have two standard poodles who need walking every day. Lexie keeps me on my toes too,” she says of her 15-year-old daughter. “We do lots of things together – we swim, we walk, we shop!” When home in Melbourne, Rhonda has regular sessions with a personal trainer, working with free weights for body strength, and recently began Pilates to help with a niggly back problem. She happily admits she’s used Botox, but is wary of its impact on her acting. “I’ve tried Botox in my forehead, but certainly not regularly and not around the eyes. It takes all the expression out of my face, and I need that as an entertainer.” She doesn’t object to cosmetic surgery, but says the recovery time makes it difficult for her work. “If it’s done well and makes the person feel better, why not? In my industry you have to look your best all the time,” she says. Today, she follows a strict cleanse, tone and moisturise routine, with lots of water and a good sunscreen every day. She also swears by Christian Dior’s Capture R60/80 XP Ultimate Wrinkle Restoring Serum ($145). She aims for at least nine hours a day of sleep and carefully watches her diet. Clearly her diligence is paying beauty dividends, and energetic Rhonda has no intention of hanging up her tap shoes just yet. “Ha!” she laughs. “No chance!”

deborah hutton
Deborah Hutton has been in the spotlight for over 20 years, as a model, TV presenter and beauty spokesperson. Despite being busier than ever, the 48-year-old becomes more gorgeous with every passing year. How do you look as great as you do? “I’ve been religious with my skin since my grandma bought me my first skincare kit when I was 14. I’ve been using Olay for five years and have noticed no rapid degeneration of my skin at all. If you are diligent with cleansing, exfoliation and moisturising, and if you load on serums, have the odd facial and face mask and put hydration back into your body, it pays.” What skincare do you use? “I use the Olay Regenerist range, but even if I were no longer associated with the brand, I’ve had such a great journey with it that I would always stay with it. Olay has just brought out a new Micro-Sculpting Serum ($49.99), which is great. I also use Thermal Skin Polisher ($19.99) a couple of times a week to keep my skin smooth. At night I dive into the Micro-Sculpting Cream ($49.99). I love it. I want to drown in it.”
‘As I’m slowly going greyer, I’m getting blonder’ What about caring for your body? “My mother gave me a beautiful Elemis Exotic Lime & Ginger Salt Glow ($99) and I love that. I exercise a lot, doing cardio, weights and Pilates, and I walk a lot. I slather on body lotion to prevent dry skin and use Kiri oil after every shower too.” How do you keep your hair looking great? ”As I’m slowly going greyer, I’m getting blonder! Because of the colour and streaks, I use really good products. I’m a huge fan of the Kérastase range and love Pantene’s Pro-V 3 Minute Miracle mask ($7.99).”
DEBORAH’S PHILOSOPHY ON AGEING
And your biggest beauty splurge? ”Having facials with Fumi, an amazing Japanese woman. The lines seem to have decreased since I’ve been seeing her.” Do you follow any special diet? “I love food so I concentrate on healthy options. I avoid cream and pastas and take it easy on the cheese. I really go light on the things that I know I need to keep in moderation. In summer I live on salads and in winter I live on soups. I don’t have a sweet tooth. Bread and pinot are my downfall!”
“My philosophy on ageing is to try to do it as gracefully as possible. It’s a personal journey and every woman is different. I’m not a great fan of fillers and I don’t do Botox as it makes me look like Jack Nicholson. I’m not about the quick fix. I think you have to have a holistic approach and be well rounded. You have to exercise, get fresh air, drink water and eat and sleep well. If you don’t, the body shows signs of age.” MORE › 17

She was one of our most recognisable faces of the 1990s, gracing magazine covers and TV ads. In 2010, model and mother-of-three Alison Brahe, 40, looks little different to the days when she was Australia’s favourite covergirl. Why do you think you still look so young? “I’m a huge believer in being in the present moment and not obsessing over the past or worrying about the future. Stress and unhappiness play a huge role in ageing.” What does your beauty routine consist of? “I don’t believe in washing my face morning and night because I think skin needs to be in its own natural oils. So I gently exfoliate once a day, moisturise and apply a great eye cream. I’ve fallen in love with a company called Benedetta.” How do you look after your lovely long hair? “I only wash it once a week, as it tends to be dry. I use a super-rich conditioner that smells good and is chemical-free and I’ll put in a nice serum while it’s wet to stop the fuzzies.” What is the best piece of beauty advice you’ve been given? “That’s easy – don’t go to bed with your make-up on.”

Forget Botox … the future of anti-aging is LIGHT! ®
Research shows aging is accelerated by the depletion of energy within your skin cells. The good news is... you can now restore their lost energy so they can rejuvenate and repair like they did when they were young. The SKIN PHYSICS PHOTON™ uses the same technology and output strength as the LED Photo-Rejuvenation devices used by dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons to: • Restore the skin’s energy levels • Stimulate collagen production • Speed wound healing • Improve skin tone and smoothness • Help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, age spots and wrinkles.

AT ANY AGE NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE, YOU CAN BENEFIT FROM COSMETIC AND SURGICAL PROCEDURES THAT WILL TAKE YEARS OFF YOUR LOOK. BY KATE MAHON
IN YOUR 30s 30 In your 30s you'll notice the first signs of ageing. There may be some lines on your forehead, and you may have some crow’s feet around the eye area. You may be starting to see the results of some sun damage.
NON-SURGICAL
FREEZE FRAME
Botox and Dysport Botox, by Allergan, or Dysport, by Ipsen Biopharm, are the best non-surgical ways to deal with facial lines such as forehead lines, vertical frown lines and crow’s feet. Used every three to five months, they involve tiny injections that create a smoothed appearance. Costing $350 to $1000, they’re a true lunch-time procedure. Dr Gabrielle Caswell, president of the Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australia, says most people start Botox at the age of 30 to 35 years, “when the first signs of ageing appear”. “If you start then, you may benefit from never developing dynamic wrinkles – wrinkles of expression,” Dr Caswell explains.
NON-SURGICAL
HEAT UP COLLAGEN
Thermage CPT From your 30s onwards, your collagen supplies – which keep the scaffolding to the skin sound and firm – become depleted. To boost them, Thermage CPT heats up collagen in the skin’s deeper layers. A vibrating hand-piece is moved over the face, heating the skin briefly and then cooling it down. Feeling hot is a good sign, as that means the collagen is the right temperature. Kim Zacharia, of The Clinic, Bondi Junction, NSW, says treatment takes about 90 minutes and “results are seen immediately and continue up to 12 months, with many getting good results from eight weeks”. She says you’ll pay around $3000 and can go straight back to work.

A MORE BALANCED FACE
Rhinoplasty This is often performed in the 30s on people who want to change the shape or size of their nose. Dr Michael Zacharia, president of the Australasian Academy of Anti-Ageing Medicine, says, “The goal is for a natural, balanced nose, in proportion with the rest of the face.” You’ll be under general anaesthetic for one to two hours, more if it’s a complex procedure, as the nose is broken, straightened and refined with a chisel-like tool. “Where possible, all incisions are inside the nose, where it’s invisible. This is ’closed rhinoplasty,’” he says. In more complex cases, “open rhinoplasty” is used across the strip that separates the nostrils. Expect to pay up to $12,000, and recovery is up to two weeks with swelling and black eyes. “The best results are seen at 12 to 18 months, but most patients are happy with outcome at four to six months.”

Elasticity and firmness of the skin are issues, as women start to lose definition in their cheeks and jawline. Wrinkles can become more prominent around the eye, while marionette lines deepen and colour and radiance can be lacking. Necks are starting to show signs of ageing.

TIGHTEN UP
Ultherapy Dr Warwick Nettle, of Sydney’s Silkwood Medical, describes this treatment as “extremely effective at lifting and firming”. It helps tighten up sagging skin by using acoustic sound energy in a hand-held device on the predetermined sections of the face or neck. The energy travels down into the skin where cells are formed, helping to heal and strengthen collagen fibres, which work to firm or lift. Try it on the face, brow, lines, cheeks, jawline and even the neck. After just one intense 30 to 40-minute treatment, you’ll see effects instantly, but best results are seen in the second to third month and last up to 18 months. Expect to pay $1000 to $3500, depending on what is treated. A walk-in, walk-out procedure.
SURGICAL
LIFT MY BROW
Brow Lift Hooded brows and sagging foreheads are lifted with this procedure which also softens those angry-looking forehead wrinkles. Dr Michael Zacharia says, “With the passage of time, the eyebrows descend over the eyes, giving a tired, irritable look.” Using general or twilight anaesthetic, the surgeon does an endoscopic brow lift, in which a special viewing instrument projects an image onto a TV screen, allowing the surgeon to lift and reposition the tissues of the brow and weaken the muscles causing frown lines. It can take 30 to 90 minutes, and you’ll be out of action for seven to 14 days. There’ll be bruising around the eyes, but expect a lifted and smoother look to the brow and face. “Best results are seen about six months post-surgery but most patients are happy with their look in a matter of weeks,” says Dr Zacharia. Expect to pay $9000 to $12,000.

PLUMP OUT THE FACE
Restylane Vital Light Start the season with restorative face work that keeps skin refreshed and plumped out. Using a gel from Q-Med, Restylane Vital Light is made from hyaluronic acid, keeping skin deeply hydrated. It also adds volume and firmness. Plastic surgeon Dr Steven Liew, of Sydney’s Shape Clinic & MediSpa, says, “This is like a youth dew. It’s a great system because it hydrates the skin internally and that’s where truly noticeable effects can be seen and felt.” A multitude of tiny injections are given to the face in a 30-minute treatment. Costing $300 per treatment area, results last four to six months. Dr Liew suggests having some injected in summer and doing it again in autumn to keep the face freshened.

Fraxel Re:store Dual In Australia, where pigmentation is one of our biggest skin concerns, Fraxel Re:store Dual laser is a dream come true. In one surgery visit, years of accumulated sun damage or discolouration caused by hormonal changes or acne scarring can be addressed. “The only thing that can cause the skin to produce new collagen and elastin is something that can penetrate the dermis and cause mechanical or thermal stress,” says Dr Jeremy Cumpston, of Ageless Clinics in Sydney’s Randwick. Fraxel Re:store Dual uses thulium laser fibres to remove pigment at the epidermal/dermal junction. It has full Therapeutic Goods Administration approval for treatment of facial pigmentation. A numbing cream is applied to the face for about 45 minutes, after which the Fraxel laser treatment is administered, with multiple “passes”. The sensation is one of prickling initially, then slight heat. It takes about 15 minutes each for the face, hands, neck or décolletage. There may be one or two days of redness and mild swelling, followed by up to seven days of light peeling. It costs $750 to $1500 per treatment, depending on the areas treated. MORE › 23

IN YOUR 50s 50 Loss of volume and elasticity are of huge concern in this decade, particularly with slackening of tone around the cheekbones and the jaw-line. Sun damage can lead to skin having pigmentation problems and uneven skin tone. Watch out for red, burst capillaries.

USING WHAT YOU HAVE
Platelet-Rich Plasma Don’t want to look like you’ve had “work”? This is the treatment for you. It involves collecting blood from the patient (around 10ml per test tube), which is then spun in a centrifuge, separating it into blood cells and platelets. The platelets are then injected back into the person’s skin to stimulate collagen growth. Anaesthetic cream is applied before the injections, as the treatment is no holiday. Dr Herbert Hooi, of Sydney’s International Centre for Cosmetic Medicine, admits people may find PRP “quite painful”. The treatment takes up to an hour. Expect bruising and swelling, and two or three treatments are recommended, four weeks apart. Do this once a year and you’ll bring life to thinning skin, a droopy jawline, décolletage and crepey necks. Expect to pay about $1200 a treatment. Don’t forget your concealer!

Restylane SubQ As your mid and lower face drop, give them some needed definition with a clear gel based on hyaluronic acid. Restylane SubQ is an injectable substance that’s the perfect way to lift and define your cheekbones and to define the chin. “If we replenish the cheek and mid-face area, then we are able to provide a natural facelifting effect,” says Dr Peter Bakaric, of Sydney’s Collagen Face Centre. “With products like Restylane SubQ for the mid-face and cheeks and other Restylane fillers to complement this sculpting work, we’re able to provide a lifted appearance without the need for surgery and with great cost-effectiveness. There is no need for time off work, and family, friends and colleagues need not be aware that anything has been done.” In an easy 30-minute treatment, your facial contours are more apparent, giving an increasingly fresh appearance. The procedure costs from around $1400 and lasts about 12 to 18 months. BEFORE

GET RID OF SAGGING FOR GOOD
Lower Facelift When you’ve finally had enough of your weak, sagging jawline, jowls and fleshy neck, and don’t want to constantly try non-surgical techniques to firm up the bottom third of the face, opt for lower facelift surgery. Go under general anaesthetic and let the surgeon remove excess fat and skin to tighten up the lower facial muscles and reposition the lower portion of the face to make it smooth and welldefined. Surgery can take from two to 4.5 hours, depending on whether you opt for neck surgery as well. Even though you’ll be wearing a face bandage for up to two weeks, and will be swollen and bruised, when the face garment eventually comes off you’ll see a much more youthful face. In six weeks’ time, when it looks its best, you’ll wonder what the fuss was about. Costing from $6500, plus anaesthetic fees, you may consider this a good investment over the seven to 12 years it should last. In preparation, get a good stock of DVDs and books to keep you occupied.

FILL-IN LINES
60s PLUS Deep lines and wrinkles on the skin are noticeable from the 60s onwards, and the skin is often sluggish in replenishing itself so is quite often lacking in radiance. Folds may be an increasing issue on the face, while skin tends to be sagging and the neck is often crepey.
Juvéderm Ultra Plus You probably have a lot of superficial wrinkles and folds on the face that need filling out. Juvéderm Ultra Plus is a thicker version of Juvéderm Ultra and is used to smooth out those pesky deeper lines and furrows. According to Dr Peter Bakaric, people up to 90 years can use this hyaluronic acid substance and reap the rewards. “It’s great for those who want to plump lips and fill wrinkles, deep furrows, mouth creases and marionette lines,” he says. There is already an anaesthetic in the gel, which is helpful if a lot of work is needed. Treatment may take 30-plus minutes, depending on the extent of the procedure. Expect some bruising, swelling and redness. Cost is $550 to $600 per 1ml treatment.

GO FOR THE WORKS
Full Facelift There are no ifs and buts about this procedure: this is full-on anti-ageing that will tighten severe skin sagging, remove excess skin and smooth out wrinkles. Dr Steven Liew opts for this operation to treat “severe laxity and skin excess in the neck, known as the ‘turkey gobbler’”. Don’t forget it’s major surgery, so you have to want to look significantly younger to undergo this operation, which is performed in a hospital and has the patient out of action for at least two weeks. You’ll also have little change left from $25,000. Usually performed under general anaesthetic, the skin is lifted to get results. The deeper layer (the SMAS fibro-fatty muscular layer) is lifted and shifted to the right vector and suspended. The excess skin is trimmed and the wound is closed meticulously to ensure minimal tension or distortion to the ear. Cheeks may be enhanced by structural fat grafts. Keep up your supply of Panadol, and in a week’s time, after the sutures are out, you should be able to put some make-up on. Prior to this, you mightn’t want to open your door!

SMOOTH AND CLEAR SKIN
Cutera Pearl Fusion When wrinkling, age spots and pigmentation mean your skin needs a total renewal, turn to the ablative laser Cutera Pearl Fusion, which combines both Pearl and Pearl Fractional lasers. Pearl treats the top layer of the skin with pulses of light to remove sun damage and brown spots, while Pearl Fractional uses heat to create tiny holes in the skin, remove sun-damaged tissue and stimulate new skin and fresh collagen. Dr Gabrielle Caswell says, “Cutera Pearl Fusion causes skin refreshment and a full epidermal turnover, treating fine lines and leading to a clear complexion. We get terrific results.” After numbing cream is applied to the skin, the Pearl laser is pulsed all over the skin and can feel like a series of fast, hot pinches. Immediately after treatment, a natural dressing forms on the skin to protect the treated area and prevent a wound. Ointment must be applied to the skin for four to five days afterwards. On day three or four the natural dressing will peel off, revealing new baby-soft skin underneath. The skin will appear sunburnt and swollen. It will also be very sun sensitive, so sunscreen is a must. This treatment can be performed in the doctor’s surgery, and although it’s considered non-surgical, it’s not for sissies. You won’t want to go out for a few days, but after a week there should be an improvement. Progressive results are apparent, thanks to collagen remodelling, from three to six months afterwards. You’ll pay up to $4000 for whole face treatment. Be prepared for the grandchildren to look at you oddly at first! 27

WHY DO YOU NEED TO MOISTURISE? Your skin needs to be well moisturised to keep it plump, soft and youthful. “The first and foremost requirement of a good moisturiser is to maintain the water content of the epidermis at a healthy level, keeping it hydrated and dewy all day long, not just for a few hours,” says Paul Fister, managing director of OmniDerm Australia. “Next comes the delivery of active ingredients, and finally moisturisers should contain ingredients that slow down the appearance of ageing.” He adds that in today’s artificial environments, even young skin can suffer from dehydration. “No two skins are exactly the same, and so professional aestheticians study the skin’s anatomy and physiology in great detail to choose the right skincare. This would be unnecessary if one moisturiser was suitable for all skin types.”

WHETHER YOUR SKIN IS DRY, OILY OR IRRITATED, EVERYBODY NEEDS TO MOISTURISE. HERE’S OUR PICK OF THE BEST PRODUCTS THAT HYDRATE THE SKIN WHILE HELPING FIX THE COMPLEXION PROBLEMS THAT PLAGUE YOU. BY KATE MAHON
DRY VS OILY SKIN According to dermatologist Dr Leslie Baumann, author of The Skin Type Solution (Penguin Viking, $35), “Dryness and oiliness depend primarily on the condition of the skin barrier.” She adds, “With oily skin your face may look shiny, and you naturally avoid products that feel oily.” As for other conditions, she explains, “Dryness results when skin moisture evaporates, and sensitivity happens when a deficient barrier permits the entry of outside irritants.” The skin’s barrier is made up of ceramides, fatty acids, cholesterol and different types of lipids. The goal of the best moisturisers is to increase the amount of these important lipids, helping the skin to hold moisture. PICK THE RIGHT MOISTURISER Dry skin Dr Spiller Biocosmetic Q10 Oxygen Complex Cream, 50ml, $208 It’s important to lock water into the skin to ensure it stays plump and ageless. WHAT ARE SERUMS? Many people with ageing or problem skin find they need more help, not only to keep skin moisturised, but also to get on top of problems and ultimately correct their complexion. Says Paul Fister, “Serums are usually water-based emulsions designed to deliver high levels of an active ingredient to the skin. Often they contain a combination of active ingredients to increase effectiveness.” He adds, “This boost can be very beneficial for the skin, but remember, serums are not normally designed to maintain the skin’s hydration, so they should always be followed by a good moisturiser.”

WHAT˙IS˙SUN˙D AMAGE?
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. According to the Cancer Council NSW, about two in three people who grow up in this country will develop some form of skin cancer before the age of 70, and each year more than 1600 Australians will die from melanoma, the deadliest form. Even if you‘re fortunate enough to escape these statistics, many Australians find their skin suffers from acute sun damage. This leads to the skin looking much older than it really is. On the surface it will look rough, dry, uneven and leathery like a bag. Wrinkles may be more obvious. Beneath the surface there will be a breakdown of collagen, which affects the structure of the skin, leading to laxity and a loss of elastin, and that means your skin won’t be as radiant and bouncy as before. It will also lose valuable hyaluronic acid, which helps keep it moist and plump.
SUMMER SUN CAN LEAVE SKIN SEVERELY DAMAGED WITH FRECKLES, A ROUGH, LEATHERY TEXTURE, WRINKLES AND PIGMENTATION. BUT WITH A FEW CAREFULLY SELECTED TREATMENTS OR PRODUCTS, YOUR SKIN CAN BE SMOOTH AND YOUTHFUL AGAIN. BY JENNI GILBERT
SAY GOODBYE T WHAT˙IS PIGMENTATION? Sunburn and sun exposure can lead to the skin becoming marked with spots and discolouration. While wrinkles and lines certainly contribute to an aged appearance, scientists at global beauty giant Procter & Gamble believe that discolouration, age spots and dullness have a more ageing effect. People with darker skin are more likely to suffer from pigmentation than those with fairer skin; however, those who have red hair and pale skin often suffer from freckles, which increase with sun exposure. The good news about pigmentation is that it can be readily treated and that your skin’s youthfulness can be regained.
TREATMENTS LIGHTˆTHERAPY Omnilux Plus Expect tighter skin and improved skin texture with this non-invasive treatment. It uses infra-red light emitting diodes (LEDs) to help rebuild the collagen that’s lost with age. Your eyes will be covered with glasses and you can lie back and relax, as it’s painless and soothing. After the 20-minute treatment, moisturiser and sunblock are applied and there is no downtime. In fact, you’ll feel invigorated. Cost is $90 to $120 per treatment and eight to ten treatments are recommended. Call 1800 808 993 for salon details. See ‘The Light Fantastic’ on page 46 for more.

CosMedix Chirally Correct Peels New skin cells develop every 28 days, so it’s important to have a peel to remove the dead ones that cause dullness and unevenness. In Chirally Correct Peels, all the “bad” components of each ingredient are isolated and removed, leaving a product that increases the activity of the cells while causing little aggravation. Botanically based, you can choose from several types, including: the Benefit Peel, which uses purified vitamin C and Retinol A to nourish, exfoliate and stimulate; the Timeless Peel, which increases cell turnover, removes layers of dead skin, retexturises and is good for pigmentation; and the Blueberry Smoothie, which uses lactic acid to exfoliate and refresh. The treatment takes around 30 minutes and you must wear sunscreen afterwards, and you should expect light peeling. Cost is from $120. Available at medispas.
Herbal Aktiv Peel Sun-damaged, pigmented skin will look infinitely better in five days’ time with this skin-resurfacing peel. “This is a proven, natural way to help slow the signs of ageing in less than a week,” says Paul Fister, managing director of OmniDerm. Made from natural dried, crushed herbs, including potent spirulina, the peel is painted onto the face and neck and leads to skin feeling flushed like a sunburn. The treatment takes an hour and you’ll feel tiny herbal particles embedded in the skin, which release vitamins, minerals and trace elements. On the third day skin starts to peel around the mouth and over the next day this progresses over your face. You may want to stay home this day as your face looks pretty bad. On the fifth day you return to the salon to remove the dead skin and reveal fresh skin beneath. It costs about $700 including home-care products. Call (03) 9645 0200. MORE › 37

DEEP HEALING WITH SER Fraxel Re:pair “This is the most effective laser procedure available today for targeting both superficial and deep ageing and sun damage, lines and pigmentation in one treatment,” says Sydney cosmetic dermatologist Dr Mei-Heng Tan. “It uses revolutionary fractionally ablative technology, so healing time is much faster, with results comparable to or better than old fully ablative lasers.” Points of light precisely treat thousands of microscopic areas of the skin, leaving surrounding tissue intact. It penetrates deep within the dermis to remove old, damaged cells, stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms and promote a firmer and more youthful-looking skin. It can be used on the face, neck, chest and even hands, in a procedure performed in the doctor’s surgery. A topical anaesthetic is applied, although in some cases doctors may recommend an anaesthetic injection or even twilight anaesthesia. Improved texture and skin tightening can be seen immediately, but the collagen regrowth takes two to three months to develop and can continue for up to six months after the procedure. Prices vary, depending on your treatment program, the clinic and your needs, but expect to pay from $500 to $5000.

Dermaroller Roll away pigmentation concerns, reduce the size of pores and smooth and refine skin with this nifty contraption that’s like a mini paint roller, but with nearly 200 ultra-fine needles. All skin types can benefit from the treatment, which begins after a topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the face for 20 to 30 minutes. When the skin feels numb, the Dermaroller is rolled over the face, with each part of the face needled about 15 to 20 times. There is no pain, but you will feel the pressure of the gadget as it’s applied to the skin. Treatment time varies from 45 to 90 minutes depending on the options selected. You’ll leave your treatment wearing a day cream and sunscreen and can go back to work straight away, although you may look a bit pink for the next day. The cost of a clinical beauty salon treatment begins at $600. Cosmetic clinics and plastic surgeons can offer deeper treatments, starting at $800. A homecare Dermaroller, $225, is available at selected beauty and cosmetic clinics. Call 1300 799 709 for details.

SOMETIMES, JUST ONE SMALL IRREGULARITY IN A FEATURE CAN MAKE YOU FEEL DISSATISFIED WITH YOUR LOOKS. INSTEAD OF GOING UNDER THE KNIFE, CONSIDER A SAFE, SPEEDY, NON-SURGICAL SOLUTION. BY KATE MAHON
EYES RIGHT Sophisticated non-surgical techniques can brighten eyes, disguise lines and wrinkles and create a more open-eyed and youthful appearance, pushing back the need for surgery by five years or more.
LASER EYE TIGHTENING Fraxel Re:store Dual is a non-ablative form of cosmetic laser that can be used to tighten and firm the crepey skin under the eyes, as well as addressing fine lines and wrinkles. Similarly, it helps minimise the appearance of pigmentation-related darkness in the area. A local anaesthetic cream is applied to the eyes and a highenergy beam of laser light is directed to trouble zones only, to stimulate new collagen formation. Because Fraxel laser only treats a fraction of the skin’s surface, it has better and more efficient healing and incurs less downtime. Skin appears immediately firmer and refreshed and the results continue to be seen with time, as newly stimulated collagen takes up to 90 days to be completely laid down. Results can last several years. Expect to pay $750 per treatment upwards, with two to five treatments recommended.
TEAR TROUGHING This is the use of injectable dermal fillers to fill the deep tear trough or ridge under the eye socket. It’s a popular procedure to eliminate dark circles, brighten the eye area and fill out wrinkles. Dr John Flynn, of Cosmedic & Skin Clinic in Southport, Queensland, has had success with this relatively simple procedure. It involves injecting softer fillers, such as Juvéderm Ultra, Esthélis or Restylane, into the tear trough to push the skin away from the large veins that run through this area and cause the dark circles. The area is immediately brightened and dark circles are minimised. Local anaesthetic may be administered so pain is not an issue. Generally, downtime is minimal, although this is a vascular area, so some patients experience considerable bruising. It’s best to have this procedure a good week or two before any important social event. Expect to pay $500 upwards. WIDENING EYES WITH BOTOX OR DYSPORT Musclerelaxing injections can be used to make the eyes appear wider and more open. “The substance is injected into the pretarsal muscle, which relaxes the muscles along the edge of the eye and allows the aperture of the eye to open wider,” says Sydney cosmetic surgeon Dr Anoop Rastogi, who frequently performs this procedure. “This is particularly good for Asian patients, those who don’t have enough tensile strength in the muscle plate and those seeking a more open-eyed look.” There is, however, a risk of producing an eversion of the lower eyelid, so the doctor needs to ensure there is enough tension in the lower eyelid before contemplating this procedure. Patients will notice the eyes appearing more open within a few days to one week. There is no downtime and the cost is around $500.
FINER FEAT FINER FEAT U U
ERASING CROW’S FEET AND LINES “Botox is the best treatment to remove lines and wrinkles from around the eyes,” says Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Robert Drielsma. “These lines are commonly caused by the contraction of the muscles when we smile or laugh.” Cleverly injecting Botox into the muscles around these lines will remove and prevent the wrinkles caused by this muscle contracting, he adds.“It smooths out wrinkles and prevents more from occurring, as we are immobilising the muscle that causes them.” Expect to notice results in as little as 72 hours – dynamic lines around the eyes will be erased and the face will take on a rejuvenated appearance. There is no downtime, and you can expect the cost to be upwards of $450 to $500. 40

LASER EYE CORRECTION FACE & SKIN
Long-sightedness, short-sightedness and astigmatisms are readily treated using laser eye correction – as millions worldwide have discovered in the past 25 years. Dr Con Moshegov, of Perfect Vision in Sydney and Queensland, says laser vision correction has been refined and improved in that time. “It’s grown safer through the advancement of the lasers we use,” he says. “We have very sophisticated tracking applications that we can apply now.” These can cope even with a patient having a coughing fit during a procedure or a sudden movement of the eye. Dr Moshegov uses iLASIK, which involves two lasers. He prefers it to the older PRK because patients experience less post-treatment discomfort and recover more quickly. “If you can get that instant improvement, it gives a lot more gratification,” he says. VIEW THE FULL PROCEDURE INFORMATION ONLINE AT www.youngeryou.com.au/vision
T URES T URES THERMAGE Radio-frequency waves are delivered deep into the dermal layer to remodel collagen and create a firmer, fresher appearance. A probe is rolled over the skin, penetrating heat deep into the skin. “We think of this as one step before surgery,” says Lisa Sullivan-Smith, from The Clinic in Sydney’s Bondi Junction. “After just one treatment, skin is immediately fresher and youngerlooking. After six months, the results are even more satisfactory. It’s great for women aged 45 to 60, but anyone can benefit.” There is no downtime, only slight redness to the face following the procedure. Expect to pay around $4500 per treatment. MORE › 41

THE NOSE
THE NON-SURGICAL NOSE JOB Advances in dermal fillers mean that balance and harmony can be brought to the face without surgery. Nose sculpting can take as little as 10 minutes for common irregularities, and rhinoplasty specialist Dr William Mooney, from Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital is enjoying tremendous patient satisfaction from the procedure, which is largely used for rebalancing, rather than making the nose smaller. If a nose is too big, too small, oddly shaped, has bumps, dents or a drooping tip, small amounts of dermal filler can be injected to rebalance the irregularities. You can correct asymmetry of the nasal cartilages, minor tip abnormalities and even disguise a noticeable nasal bridge hump. A broad range of dermal fillers can also be used in nasal deformity correction – either temporary fillers such as Juvéderm, Restylane SubQ, Esthélis or Fortélis, which last between six and 18 months, or others like Aquamid that last 10 to 15 years. “We inject the fillers to target specific areas of irregularity at the surface of the nose or the mid-line under the nose, which alleviates drooping,” says Dr Mooney. Semi-permanent fillers range from $890 to $1650, depending on how much is used.
MUSCLE RELAXANTS FOR NOSES Botox and Dysport can be used to make subtle changes to the angle of the nose or create a more youthful appearance. They can address the “wolf lines” that appear on the bridge of the nose when you smile, as well as creases along the side of the nose and on the upper third of the nose. Other procedures involve changing the shape or position of the nose by injecting the columella, the strip of skin between the nostrils. The relaxant is injected into the muscle that pulls the tip of the nose down and can create a hook-like appearance. It immobilises the muscle, stops it pulling and rotates the nose up slightly. Injections can also stop nasal flaring – the relaxant is administered to the muscles at the side of the nostrils. Expect to pay $400 upwards.
THE HANDS RESTYLANE VITAL LIGHT TO ADDRESS CREPEY SKIN This new generation hyaluronic acid filler is used to restore the skin’s internal moisture reservoirs, and is perfect for restoring and rejuvenating crepey skin on the hands. “It’s a slightly different type of filler in that it doesn’t volumise or plump,” explains Dr Peter Bakaric, of the Collagen Face Centre in Sydney’s Bondi Junction. Rather, it provides hydration to the skin from the inside, a little like an internal reservoir. “It holds water and allows for the slow release of hydration into the skin. It also triggers collagen production within the skin.” Three treatments are recommended for best results, but even after just the first treatment, the skin is healthier, with a firm and plush look. Fine wrinkles are diminished, and the skin is softer and more supple. You can expect to pay about $300 to $350 per treatment. MORE › 42

MOUTH & LIPS
AND THEN THERE’S…
With age, lips become smaller and thinner. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be used to restore fullness in the lips as well as to attract moisture to the area, volumising the pout and smoothing out fine lines. They can be cleverly injected to redefine lip contours as well as plump the lip itself. Esthélis Soft is great for mouth and lip borders. According to Dr Bakaric, “It’s extremely easy to work with and produces great results.” Juvéderm is also good for enhancing lips, while Restylane Kiss is another alternative. They last four to six months and cost $550 to $600 per 1ml. For longer-lasting results, up to 12 months, go for Perlane, costing about $600 to $650.
THE ‘CAMERON DIAZ SMILE’ Otherwise called the Botox Smile Lift, this addresses the drooping of the corners of the mouth that occurs with age. “This drooping can often cause a sad appearance to the face,” says Dr Paul Gerachi of The Face Institute in Chatswood, Sydney. “Relaxing the muscle that pulls the mouth down can be enough to give it a more pleasant appearance at rest. The only downside is that some people find it strange at first when eating, but they become accustomed within a week.” Expect to pay around $400.
REMEMBER The basis of any procedure is great skincare. Invest in quality formulas that are designed to enhance and maintain the quality of your skin and provide anti-ageing benefits. Try the D’jeunesse skincare range.
THE NEFERTITI LIFT Botox or Dysport is injected into the neck to alleviate sagging and horizontal lines and to help address jowling in the lower face. “This is great for people who want a minimally invasive approach to lifting the face and neck,” says Dr Gerarchi. “This uses relaxants to gently lift and redefine the jawline and give a subtle rejuvenating effect.”

LUSH LIPS
Muscle relaxants such as Botox or Dysport can be used to slim and refine the face and jawline. A “squaring” of the lower face often occurs in ageing but can also occur in younger people. “A wide lower facial third throws proportions into disharmony,” says Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Michael Miroshnik. “Botox weakens the muscle and as a result it shrinks. It can narrow the lower face and create a more youthful appearance.” Botox for this application may take longer to kick in – up to two weeks later than in other areas of the face – but also last longer: six months or more. As there is a risk of making it difficult for patients to chew, cosmetic physician Dr Peter Bakaric says he prefers to err on the side of caution in the first procedure and have a patient back a month or two later for further injections if necessary. Dr Gavin Chan, of the Victorian Cosmetic Institute in Melbourne, says the procedure has health benefits as well as refining the lower jaw. It relieves neck, head and jaw pain, and the teeth are not as exposed to wear and tear caused by clenching and grinding. “It can cost $800 to $1500, but even one dental crown could cost $5000,” says Dr Chan.

MINI MANI Hands should be manicured weekly at home to keep them looking their best. According to Paula Shone-Adams, educator for Hawley International, “A salon manicure will last up to four weeks, but weekly home care will help it last longer.” Soak hands in warm water in Hawley Manispa Blissful Soak, $10.40, for three minutes. Dry hands, then use a Hawley Black Beauty emery board, $3.80 for two, to file nails. Rub cuticle conditioner such as Hawley Illume Activate, $5.80, or BeautySnapz Cuticle Conditioner, $5.99 for 24, into cuticles, and use an orange wood stick to push back. Dry hands and apply Hawley Manispa Purify Mask, $14.95, for five minutes. Rinse off and dry. Buff nails and apply polish.

Skin rejuvenates its cells every 28 days, but it can become lacklustre as dead cells build up, leaving it looking dull and uneven. Use a great-smelling scrub such as Elemis Exotic Lime & Ginger Salt Glow, $99, to brighten it. Moisten skin with a little water and massage in the product in a circular motion, avoiding the lip and eye area. Rinse thoroughly. Tired, grey skin should be given a wake-up call.
A facial will revive your complexion, relax the muscles and boost circulation. We like Comfort Zone products. Find a quiet place and cleanse face in upward motions with Everyday Milk Cleanser, $70. With a bowl of warm water, rinse face and use a hand towel to pat dry. Scrub skin with Active Pureness Scrub, $80, wipe off with pads and rinse skin. Remove all traces of cleanser and scrub with Everyday Tonic, $70. Put your face over a bowl of hot water and create a tent effect by placing a towel over head. Gently massage around the eyes and eyelids with light tapping motions. Press your temples. Apply a Hydramemory Mask, $90. Leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse, tone and moisturise.

behind the mask If you don’t have time for a facial, a mask is the next best thing to plump up the skin and give it a shot of healthy colour. Stretchable cloth masks in sachets are great because they cover the entire face and drench the skin with much-needed moisture in a measured dose, without fuss or mess. You can stretch them over the face while having a bath, lying down meditating or even while doing your feet or hands. After using the mask on your face, rub it over your neck, décolletage and hands. Try Olay Regenerist Facial Treatment Mask, $39.99 for five, which Deborah Hutton says is “dewy and like a professional facial at home”, or SK-II’s Facial Treatment Mask, $28 for one, or $140 for six, which is drenched in mineral-rich Pitera (a derivative of Sake) to give a crystal-clear glow.
silky skin Sunburn, hot air, clothing and swimming in chlorine or salt water can leave skin dry and alligator-like. To get it glowing and in silky condition, be sure to body-brush every day. Grab a loofah or an Inspa body brush, $20, with a long handle so you can reach your back, and use over the body in small circular motions. Target areas prone to dryness such as knees, elbows and feet. Without a brush, you need a body scrub such as Skeyndor Spa Sensations Orange Body Peeling Cream, $75, with zesty orange, apricot, grape and lychee to refine the skin. Moisturise with Skeyndor Spa Sensations Caresse Body Serum, $89. Finish with a spray of The Body Shop Neroli Jasmine Body Mist, $23.95, keeping you hydrated and fragrant throughout the day.
FEET FIRST Your feet are on show all summer long at the beach and in sandals. Make sure you keep them in great condition with a home pedicure and brightly coloured nails. Put your feet in a large bowl of warm water for 10 minutes. Get rid of any rough dry skin with a pumice stone, rubbing the soles of the feet to exfoliate. Clean cuticles with a nail brush, then cut toenails straight across, filing with an emery board, and paint with your favourite varnish. The hottest colours are bold and opaque metallics in silver, violet, melon, pink and rich red, as seen on divas such as Beyoncé, Rihanna and Christina Aguilera. Says Sharon Mazzeo, Zoya’s creative director for Australia, “Bold metallic colours and a return to red epitomise this year’s hottest spring trends.” Take a break from pastels with lacquers from Zoya’s Reverie Collection, $17 a bottle.

Just as you look after your skin, it’s great to give your hair a weekly mask. Simply wash hair with your regular shampoo, then lavish it with a regenerating treatment. One of the best for dry hair is Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque, $39.95, containing macadamia oil and argan oil to promote silkiness and elasticity. Apply to hair and wrap in a towel, then blow-dry. Those with oily hair shouldn’t shy away from treatments either. Yasmin Sadikot, founder of OmVeda, says, “From an Ayurvedic perspective, oily hair is generally caused by excess heat in the body.” The OmVeda Hair Tonic, $32.40, is made with triphala, mint and musk mallow, and is cooling and nourishing for the scalp, which is often compromised when hair is oily. It also helps control hair loss, dandruff and split ends. “Apply after shampooing and leave it on the scalp, reducing the effects of scalp heat,” Yasmin says. The tonic leaves your hair non-greasy so it doesn’t have to be washed out. MORE ›

scented sanctuary You can instantly give your house a new atmosphere by changing its aroma with candles, diffusers and scented rocks. Within a moment of lighting a candle, or putting some beautifully fragranced diffuser sticks or perfumed stones around the place, your house will not only look more spa-like, but the chosen fragrances will also promote different moods such as energy, sexiness, indulgence and peacefulness. A new take on the old-fashioned pot pourri, scented rocks look like a designer piece and create a wonderful ambience. Says Helen Armstrong, managing director of Apsley & Company, who create these perfumed stones, “Atmosphère Scented Rocks, $29.95, are most effective in small areas. We recommend piling the rocks into a beautiful glass piece to experience them as both a decorative and scented piece.” They’re available in five nature-inspired fragrances – try Black Pepper, Amber or Red Tea. The Abode Aroma diffusers, $44.95, come in 21 fragrances. Try Gardenia Bud or Ginger Pear. Candles look great around the bath at night, or in your bedroom. Lift the spirits with the organic soy wax candles from Inspa, $24, infused with essential oils in four heavenly aromas.

bath benefits Soaking in a bath is a great way to relax, chill out and ease tired, aching muscles. Don’t make the bath boiling hot as this speeds the pulse rate and can dry the skin. Instead aim for a temperature of 35 degrees. For total relaxation choose a scented bath. Aromatherapy oils are great and can be used for relaxation or invigoration. According to Judy Chapman, Byron Bay-based author of Aromatherapy (HarperCollins, $24.95), bergamot, jasmine, ginger, rose, peppermint and ylang-ylang increase positive energy, while lavender, geranium, chamomile and sandalwood are calming. Lemon peps you up, while spices can be relaxing. Try Decléor Energising Bath Concentrate, $120, with lemon, lavender and angelica to eliminate fatigue and regenerate. Crystal salt soaks help ease muscle pain, boost the metabolism and feel therapeutic to the body. Try Burt’s Bees Therapeutic Bath Crystals, $24.95. Seaweed is known for its healing properties, which balance the body and also purify. Try Thalgo Micronized Marine Algae Sachets, $95 for 10. Cleopatra loved to bathe in milk because it helps soften the skin. Try MooGoo Milk Wash, $17.50.

night recovery The body’s repair processes run best at night-time because they don’t have to deal with daily aggressors such as UV rays, pollution, smoking, alcohol and stress. When you apply a rich, nurturing cream, your cells soak up its nourishment, repairing any damage. Says Tony Vargas, Elizabeth Arden’s vice president of research and development, “Night is when the skin performs its basic maintenance and repairs, finetuning its signals to rebuild protein reserves fortifying the moisture barrier.” Try a rich night cream such as Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Plump Perfect Ultra All Night Repair and Moisture Cream for Face and Throat, $140. Your hair deserves a treat too. Pantene’s Night Miracle Leave On Creme Serum, $9.99, can be run through dry hair, without leaving it wet or greasy. SURGICAL
BREAST ENLARGEMENT
BEFORE
AFTER
Plastic surgeon Dr Michael Miroshnik, of Sydney’s Double Bay, says there are three types of women who opt for breast augmentation: young women who want to enhance their look, mothers who find pregnancy has robbed them of their normal breast shape, and older women who simply want “something for themselves”. Implants are used to enlarge the size of breasts or to correct a breast that’s a different size or shape to its partner. Dr Miroshnik says most implants used in Australia today are silicone high-cohesive gel filling. “The incision sites can be in the breast crease, armpit or around the nipple, with most women being best suited to the breast-crease incision,” he says. The implant is placed on top of the muscle, under it or, most commonly, a combination of both in a “dual-plane” placement, in a day-surgery operation performed under general anaesthetic. It usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes and costs about $10,000. A more complicated augmentation, requiring accessory procedures such as nipple modifications or lifting, can take up to four hours and cost up to $15,000. “Expect to be off work for about seven days, but in general you’ll feel well enough to go out for dinner on the evening of the operation,” says Dr Miroshnik.

BREAST LIFT
Tank tops, halter-neck dresses and low-cut swimsuits are out of the question if you have a droopy bustline. “Women with large breasts can suffer sagging at a younger age, but many women who are older, often with smaller breasts, find their bust is heading southwards as they age,” says Dr Miroshnik. He adds that weight-loss or pregnancy are common scenarios associated with needing a lift to get a more youthful shape. After the patient is sedated with general anaesthetic, the nipple/areola and breast itself are reshaped and lifted to a higher position and the skin around tightened. The operation takes about two hours plus and may or may not be performed in a day surgery, depending on the procedure’s complexity. If a significant reduction in volume is needed, an overnight stay in a hospital is usually warranted. Generally you are off work for seven to 10 days. If breasts are misshapen, and no implants are involved, you may get a refund from a private health fund and end up paying about $12,000. If implants are involved, it may cost around $15,000. Regardless, clothes and swimsuits will look much better.

BREAST REDUCTION
Excessively large breasts not only can ruin the shape of your outfit, but can also be painful and prevent exercise. “The extra weight can result in shoulder, neck and back pain and bad posture,” says Dr Miroshnik. “Reducing the breasts usually involves significant lifting and reshaping, but those who do it feel great about their new look and improved lifestyle.” Patients may opt for surgery known as the short scar or lollipop procedure or the anchorshaped pattern, which refers to the appearance of the incisions. “I prefer the lollipop procedure,” says Dr Miroshnik. “It leaves a scar that runs around the nipple and has a vertical extension straight down the middle of the breast.” The surgery takes about three hours under general anaesthetic and involves a one or two-day stay in hospital. You’ll need to take up to two weeks off work, but the reduction can be claimed on private health funds, which means you’ll pay around $10,000 to $12,000 for better-looking breasts.
BOTCHED BREASTS
It’s easy to be tempted by cutpriced boob jobs, either at home or overseas where there are no regulations. But, says Dr Miroshnik, “I re-do a lot of bad breast jobs, which end up being more costly than if the primary surgery had been carried out by a reputable plastic surgeon in Australia.” He says complications overseas can include sub-optimal hygiene and shoddy workmanship. Breasts may be misshapen, differently sized on each side or look unnatural. “Redoing the breasts can take much longer than primary augmentation,” Dr Miroshnik adds. Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and costs $10,000 to $15,000, which may be claimable under your private health fund and/or Medicare. MORE ›

NON-SURGICAL
BREAST PUMP SYSTEM
People say it’s impossible to create larger and enduring breasts non-surgically. Wrong. If you are committed to making your cup size bigger, turn to the Brava breast pump system. You won’t get bigger breasts easily overnight, but if you’re prepared to wear a large plastic dome over each breast, encased in a sports bra, for a minimum of 10 hours daily for 10 weeks, you’ll see growth. Dr Ronald Goedeke, medical director of Brava New Zealand and Australia, says women who use the Brava system correctly can achieve on average an increase of one cup size – and the results are long-lasting. Dr Goedeke says that women normally wear the device at night, while sleeping on their back. Yes, it is uncomfortable at first, but if you want an increase in size, you’ll get used to the sensation, which exerts subtle tension on the breast tissue. This eventually results in the production of new breast tissue. “After about seven weeks women will notice true tissue growth,” he says. “If the woman misses one night in the routine, she needs to add three more days at the end of the 10 weeks to achieve results.” The kit is suitable for women aged from 18 to 60s. It costs $1995, with domes available in eight sizes. If you outgrow your set, new domes cost $595 a set. It can be ordered online at www.mybrava.com.au.
PADDING OUT THE CLEAVAGE
Kylie Minogue, Cameron Diaz and Nicole Kidman seem to have bigger breasts for special occasions. Perhaps they’re using the push-up power of Hollywood Foam Breast Enhancers, $29.95. These foam inserts stick to your clothing and not your skin, providing a seamless finish under those elegant gowns or more casual wear. Expert a perky boost to what nature has given you. Go to www.hollywoodfashiontape.com.au.
SKINCARE FOR THE BREAST AREA
Breasts will benefit from regular use of these specially formulated products to keep them firm and supple. Dr Spiller Biocosmetic Breast and Décolletté Lift Cream, 50ml, $109 This cream is loaded with plant extracts to tighten the breast tissue, making breasts firmer. Estée Lauder Body Performance Toning Bust Serum, 50ml, $76 The best thing about this serum is its nylon fibre matrix which contracts, giving immediate firming. Skeyndor Body Slindy Breast Volumising Emulsion, 150ml, $79.90 Strengthens elasticity of the breasts and décolletage. Massage in at night. Elemis Pro-Collagen Lifting Treatment Neck and Bust, 50ml, $186 With royal jelly and padina pavonica. Pevonia Botanica Restore Neck and Bust Cream, 50ml, $132.50 Contains extract of Kigelia Africana mixed with hazelnut and chamomile oils.
BRAS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE A good, well-fitting bra could make the difference to your body shape. According to Janine Fisk, general manager of Eveden Australia, “Eighty per cent of Australian women are wearing the wrong bra size. I’ve seen women in a 12C who are actually an 8DD,” she says. “The right bra size and fit will truly reshape your whole body and the way you look in your clothes. You’ll definitely be more comfortable, look slimmer and even look like you’ve dropped a dress size or two.” If you are curvy and fuller figured, you needn’t be relegated to the “nanna” section of the lingerie department. A fuller-figured woman can choose bras from the Elomi range that has size ranges from 14 to 26 backs with C to H cups in stylish prints and colours. Call (03) 9646 9305 for stockists. Slimmer women who need more support should try Freya bras, which are bright, fun and also come in a sports range. Fantasie designs are more sophisticated, with lace and embroidery. And look for strapless and convertible bras and bustiers in larger cup sizes. Available at Myer and David Jones.

THE LASER TREATMENT
Women who need a breast boost and have a smaller cup size should look at the Fraxel laser treatment. Surgeon Dr Jack Ting, of the Laser Cosmetic Day Procedure Centre in Sydney’s Coogee, says this method can help lift breasts by up to 30 per cent, without a hint of surgery. He used it on a woman’s breasts that had red stripes from a botched beauty therapy treatment. He also gave her sun-damaged décolletage an anti-ageing boost. Within two weeks the stripes were gone, the chest skin was markedly improved and her breasts were lifted. According to Dr Ting, Fraxel treatment delivers multiple pinpoints of laser energy to the deeper dermal layer of the skin. A numbing cream is applied for 45 minutes first. The less impactful Fraxel Re:store, which may be all that’s required for cleaning up the décolletage, costs up to $1500 per session. Fraxel Re:pair – including lifting – costs $5000 to $7000 with intravenous sedation.
BLAST BREAST WRINKLES
Here’s a nifty (and novel) way to banish wrinkles on your décolletage. Instead of using cream, try a silicone patch, known as the Décolletté Pad. It’s placed on your chest and cleavage, usually at night, and removed in the morning. Wrinkles, lines and sun-damage should start to smooth out, leaving your décolletage looking much younger. The pad lasts 30 to 60 days (it’s reusable, with a very sticky backing) and costs $55. Buy it at www.skinvigor8.com.au. BEFORE

BODY 01 THE BODY RE-SHAPERS Liposculpture Liposculpture is the “artistic” removal of fat deposits to create a new body shape or bring back the old shape. “It’s the same procedure as liposuction, except that as well as removing excess fat, you can sculpt and contour the body’s shape,” says Dr Josef Goldbaum, cosmetic surgeon at Liposuction Australia, based in Melbourne. Local anaesthestic means you are awake during treatment and can move and turn as required – you can sit and stand so that further fine-tuning can be done. This multipositioning enables the maximum amount of fat to be removed to reveal a smoother, more svelte shape. And while further skin contraction is anticipated in the weeks following your procedure, you’ll appreciate your new body shape from day one. TARGETS Fatty deposits in the abdomen, buttocks and inner and outer thighs. NEED-TO-KNOW Swelling, bruising, discomfort and tightness in the skin are to be expected, and you’ll wear a compression garment for a week afterwards. COST Around $1600 to $2200 per area, although your doctor will give you a more precise cost. This is a one-off procedure and your new shape is permanent. BodyTite
LipoControl
This new procedure uses Radio Frequency Assisted Liposuction. In addition to fat reduction, aims to “shrink” skin into a tighter state. “BodyTite is used with liposuction and uses radiofrequency to melt fat and heat the skin tissue to cause collagen to ‘shrink’ and tighten the skin,” says cosmetic surgeon Dr John Flynn, of Cosmedic & Skin Clinic, at Southport on Queensland’s Gold Coast. The patient is given light sedation, followed by a small incision and the injection of a numbing solution. The doctor delivers radio frequency into the area until it has melted enough fat and tightened the skin. It takes between one to two hours. Patients will see optimum results to their body shape in six weeks, and three months for the skin tightening. TARGETS The system can be used on the tummy, hips, buttocks, thighs, arms, neck and under the chin. NEED-TO-KNOW Swelling, bruising and discomfort are to be expected, and you’ll wear a compression garment for a week afterwards. COST $3000 to $9000 depending on the size of the areas treated. CONTACT Visit www.cosmedic. com.au or call 1300 881 388 for more information.
LipoControl is the newest laser device to melt unwanted fatty deposits. It incorporates GPS mapping for precision removal of fat, which is squeezed out as liquid oil through the penetration holes, or sucked out by syringe. “LipoControl is not meant for removing large amounts of fat, but can be used with traditional liposuction to smooth out uneven contours, tighten the skin and lessen post-operative bruising,” says Dr Jack Ting of Sydney’s Laser Cosmetic Day Procedure Centre. “The removal of jowls and fat under the chin, and tightening of the ‘turkey gobbler’ excess skin, are some of its successful applications.” For the body, it will mainly be used for sculpting, in particular on the abdomen. TARGETS Love handles, back, legs, knees, calves and under upper-arms, and works on contouring the lower face, jowls, upper neck and under the chin. NEED TO KNOW It’s mostly a walk-in, walk-out treatment, but you’re recommended to take at least seven days to rest and recover. COST The initial result is evident within a week, but the optimal result will take three to six months. Cost is time-based, and to smooth the jowls, upper neck, and fat under the chin is about $4000. CONTACT Visit www.drting.com.au or call 02 9665 3247 for more information.

02 THE BODY CONTOURERS Thermage CPT Thermage CPT is a system that claims to smooth out puckering caused by cellulite by zapping it with capacitive radio-frequency energy. The heat from the energy penetrates the skin, breaking down and shrinking the undulating fat cells responsible for cellulite. “The latest Comfort Pulse Technology is what enables increasing energy to be delivered deeper into the skin, thus providing increased tightening and effectiveness,” says Dr Garry Cussell, of Sydney’s Facial Rejuvenation Clinic. “This technology enables us to go 25 to 30 per cent deeper in a treatment than previously.” The procedure takes an hour to 90 minutes, and you can return to routine activities right after treatment. TARGETS Buttocks, upper thighs and upper arms – and is excellent at lifting and tightening areas on the face, around the upper neck and jowls, and slimming and lifting the facial contours. NEED-TO-KNOW Most people will require only a single treatment, although the full results may not become noticeable for several months. COST Treatments cost $3000 to $5000 depending on areas treated. Lipodissolve Lipodissolve involves injecting a combination of substances such as enzymes, vitamins and phosphatidylcholine (a natural soy substance) into unwanted fat pockets in order to melt them away. These increase fat metabolism to break down fatty deposits in order to naturally absorb and remove them from the body. It’s not a weight-loss alternative but simply helps remove excess pockets of fat that will no longer be reduced by diet or exercise. TARGETS Commonly treated areas include love handles, upper and lower abdomen, back, chins, buffalo humps, arms, legs and lipomas. NEED-TO-KNOW Specific body areas determine typical responses. Most patients will experience some degree of redness, swelling, itching, bruising or tenderness temporarily. Discomfort peaks at about 45 minutes following treatment and can take 24 to 48 hours to subside. Bruises and tender areas can last from days to weeks. Small tender lumps may form under the skin and may take a month or more to settle. COST Each series of injections costs around $350 and as many as six sessions may be required, four to six weeks apart. CONTACT Visit www.heberdavis.com.au or call 02 9552 6277 for more info.
BODY
UltraShape uses ultrasound technology to destroy unwanted fat cells without harming nearby tissues such as nerves or blood vessels so they are flushed out of the body. Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Mark Kohout was one of the first doctors in Australia to offer this body-contouring system. “UltraShape is a ground-breaking treatment that frees the body of unsightly fat deposits, giving people the shape they want quickly and without any pain or downtime,” he says. “The best results are in women with relatively normal body weight but a couple of bulges that are difficult to reduce with diet and exercise.” TARGETS Abdomen, flanks and thighs. NEED-TO-KNOW You feel a sting as the ultrasound is delivered, and there is a warm glow after treatment for about an hour. COST From $495 for a small abdomen treatment, from $990 for a medium abdomen, and from $1300 for a large abdomen. Prices are per treatment and you’ll need two to four treatments to achieve the best results. CONTACT Visit www.drmarkkohout.com.au or call 1300 551 151 for more information. To find a doctor in your area, visit www.ultrashape.net.au.
DO-IT-YOURSELF PRODUCT SOLUTION ■ Skeyndor Cosmetic Cavitation Anti-Cellulite Cream, 200ml, $134 This was formulated with the effects of ultrasound technology in mind. Just as ultrasound helps to decrease the thickness and degree to which the fatty tissue penetrates the dermis, this cream aims to dissolve lipids stored in fat cells and assist with their elimination from the body. Caffeine helps to stimulate, while firming and tightening ingredients work upon application and with repeated use, to tone the skin and improve elasticity. See page 62 for more at-home body products.

THE SMOOTH
OPERATORS Medical experts concur there is no “cure” for cellulite, but, along with healthy eating and exercise, there are treatments that can have a positive effect on the way it looks. Here are some of the cellulite-changing treatments to consider.
Ionithermie This technology works by using two kinds of electrical stimuli (galvanic and faradic) with a conductive, thermal masque – of algae and clay containing active ingredients derived from plant extracts – to penetrate deep into the skin’s cellular level where cellulite resides. Claudia Calisto, Body Elite Company director and qualified nutritionist, explains that it works by “detoxifying and re-mineralising the body to increase circulation and metabolism”. As well as targeting cellulite, the system improves skin and muscle tone, with the added benefits of slimming and detoxification. The results can be seen immediately, with a potential loss of two to 20cm from the very first treatment. TARGETS Highly recommended for spot reduction (thighs, buttocks, abdomen, love handles, hip, upper arms) and as a kick-start to a weight-loss program. NEED-TO-KNOW To achieve and maintain the best results you will need to combine salon treatments with home-care products and individual eating plans developed by a qualified nutritionist. COST The average cost is $175 per treatment, but a course of five or 10 or more is generally recommended for most people. Every course of treatments includes an assessment, the individualised eating plan plus the necessary home-care products. CONTACT Visit the Body Elite Company’s website www.bodyelite.com.au or call 0433 722 639 for more information.
Endermologie Endermologie uses a device that suctions the skin with a vacuum and kneads it with a set of rollers. It was developed in the 1980s in France to treat the scars of burn victims, and improvements in cellulite were noticed as well. It was the first treatment approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to allow the claim of “temporary reduction of cellulite” and was found to reduce body measurements, increase circulation and relieve muscular pain and spasms. With a “deep-massage” approach to bodycontouring, it’s very relaxing and the intensity of the rolling action can be adjusted to personal comfort levels. In addition to the targeted areas, it can help increase lymphatic flow and help promote better circulation throughout the body. TARGETS Stubborn fat areas – such as on the legs, thighs and buttocks – which are unaffected by diet and exercise. NEED-TO-KNOW Minor, temporary bruising might occur, similar to that from a deep tissue massage. COST $1200 to $1500 for a package of 14 treatments. It’s recommended you have treatments once or twice a week, with monthly visits for maintenance. Treatments last 30 minutes. CONTACT Visit www.healthhealingwellness.com.au or call 07 3857 8887 for more information.

BODY
Hypoxi incorporates exercise with advanced vacuum technology to target fat in problem zones such as the stomach, waist, hips, buttocks and thighs. The treatment requires you to be strapped into an airtight chamber that has bike pedals and you pedal for about 30 to 40 minutes in order to keep your blood flowing in the lower half of your body. Dr Norbert Egger, who created Hypoxi, realised that if you could stimulate blood flow to a specific area of the body, your fatty acids would metabolise faster in that area, making you lose weight and reducing cellulite more effectively. Exercise was key to speeding up the process. Hypoxi targets fat loss in the stomach, hip, buttock and thigh regions, with results up to three times greater than those achieved with conventional exercise. It also improves skin tone and texture, increases fat metabolism, improves circulation and lymph drainage, and reduces cellulite. TARGETS Buttocks, knees, thighs and stomach to help smooth and reduce those areas. NEED-TO-KNOW This treatment does include a physical workout. COST Hypoxi starts from around $69 per session, or $690 for a course of 12. CONTACT Visit www.hypoxi.com.au or call 1300 HYPOXI (497 694).

FAKE DON’T BAKE GET A NATURAL-LOOKING GLOW THIS SUMMER, WITHOUT SUN DAMAGE. BY JENNI GILBERT
It’s no secret that a bit of sun-kissed colour makes you look – and feel – healthier, leaner and sexier. That’s why they call it a healthy glow. Sun exposure to get the look is simply not an option, though, unless you want to risk premature ageing, sun damage and skin cancer. Thankfully, faking it – either at home or in the salon – has never been simpler.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN You’ll need to prep your skin to ensure a good result. Shower and cleanse all over, making sure all traces of soap or shower gel are rinsed away, as any residue can affect your tan. Exfoliating will make the result smoother and sexier too, as it sloughs dry skin patches that could affect the tan. It will also help to improve the appearance of skin in areas affected by cellulite. Massage a quality scrub all over and, again, rinse away all traces of product. Try MD Formulations Face and Body Scrub, $95, Pevonia Botanica Silky Skin Body Scrub, $73, or Clinique Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliating Cream, $50. HINT: Do your hair removal 48 hours prior to applying your tan (unless you’re shaving, in which case the day before is fine). This includes eyebrows, legs, Brazilian, underarms and upper lip. It gives the skin time to settle and minimises any reaction to tanning formulas.
TAN TIME Wait at least half an hour after showering and exfoliating before applying your tan, to ensure skin is perfectly dry and reduce the risk of streaking. For the same reason, don’t moisturise until the next day. Wear thin latex gloves (from the supermarket) to prevent your hands staining, massaging the formula in well. Start on larger areas of the body (stomach, back, legs) before moving on to small areas. Pay attention to the knees, ankles, elbows, wrists and knuckles, where the formula might grab. If these areas tend towards dryness, apply a little unscented, uncoloured moisturiser over them just before tanning to prevent an uneven result. Don’t get dressed immediately after applying your tan – it needs time to absorb thoroughly and dry. Wait 10 minutes, or longer if no-one’s home. When you dress, wear loose clothes that won’t endanger your golden glow. HINT: Speed up drying time by directing your hairdryer over any damp-totouch areas. Ensure you’ve got the “cool” button on.

tan commitment-phobe who hasn’t quite mastered the art of application. They stay put until your next shower, so mistakes can be washed away. Spray over skin or blend well, depending on the formula. Allow to dry and then dress to thrill. Try Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs, $29.25, a sheer, gold pearl shimmer that sprays in an ultra-fine mist. St. Tropez Instant Glow Wash Off Mousse, $34.95, dries streak-free in five minutes.
◆ TANNING CREAMS & LOTIONS With hydrating formulas, these apply like a regular moisturiser, but must be massaged in carefully as they have tanning agents. They give a deeper colour than most other tanning formulas, aside from sprays. Wear latex gloves and massage evenly all over, as missed bits will show up as streaks. Try SkinCeuticals Sans Soleil, $61.90, for an even, streak-free colour while hydrating the skin. Dr. LeWinn’s Sunless Self Tanning Lotion, $29.95, has aloe vera and vitamins E and B to condition the skin while bronzing beautifully.
◆ GELS Usually tinted a light shade of bronze, these dry quickly and are easy to apply. You can actually see the tan as you apply them, which means streaks and spots are rare. They’re great to use on the face or when you’re in a hurry. Try Clinique Self Sun Face Bronzing Gel Tint, $36. Oil-free and non-greasy, this dries quickly and gives a streak-free finish. Garnier Ambre Solaire Natural Bronzer Velvet-Touch Gel, $13.95, has a light, fruity scent and develops to a luminous bronze, while hydrating the skin. ◆ MOUSSES Like an air-whipped formula, these apply a light, golden hue and are virtually mistake-proof. Again, they apply tinted, so you won’t miss any areas. Try Ella Baché Great Moussetan Moisturising Self Tan for Body, $44. This dries quickly, developing within a few hours to deliver a streak-free result. St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, $43.95, dries quickly and can be applied lightly for subtle colour, or layered on for increasing depth.

2 MINUTES
Watch what you drink, and discover the secrets of clever brushing. ■ Cut consumption of staining agents such as tea, coffee, red wine and cola drinks. ■ Clean your teeth for two to three minutes twice a day using a brush with a small head and soft bristles or, better still, an electric toothbrush. The Australian Dental Association recommends placing your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth, aiming the bristles toward the gum line. Jiggle the brush gently back and forward, only brushing one or two teeth at a time. Use an advanced-formula whitening toothpaste, such as Colgate or Macleans, to help remove or reduce stains. Rinse with a whitening mouthwash, such as Listerine Whitening, and you’re good to go.

DIY whitening, professional teeth cleaning and tooth filing can all be achieved with great results in as little as half an hour. ■ Over-the-counter kits, paint-on solutions and adhesive strips will give subtle home-whitening results. Visit www.ada.org.au for recommended products. ■ Don’t underestimate the whitening effect of professional teeth cleaning at your dentist every six months. This usually involves a ‘scale and clean’ to remove tartar, and tooth polishing. Dr Sandra Short, of Dentartistry in Sydney’s Double Bay, says, “Home cleaning doesn’t do the job alone, and whitening treatments are less effective if teeth are not clean.” The cost, as part of a dental check-up, is around $200. ■ Using a file to reshape the edges and angles of your teeth can make them appear more aligned, with just one-tenth of a millimetre often all that’s needed. Dr Short says, “Just a tiny tweak can make a big difference. It’s not painful because you’re not taking off much tooth.” If you have a dentist like Dr Short, there may be no extra charge on top of your normal check-up costs. MORE › 69

60 MINUTES Professional whitening gives a dazzling smile, and bonding will hide those imperfections. ■ A professional whitening treatment will give the most effective results. Dr Cary Fraser, of Sydney’s Bay Dental & Orthodontics in Double Bay, uses the Sapphire Whitening System. “We have an ‘in-the-chair’ system that costs around $850, and a ‘take-home’ system, which requires custom-made trays, for $250. For the best results, we recommend a combination of both. The in-the-chair treatment is a one-off, whereas you use the take-home system for three minutes a day for one or two weeks, depending on how white you want your teeth.” Sydney’s Dr Michael Finkelstein also offers two whitening systems. “For the take-home treatment we create moulds of the mouth to make trays for the teeth. We give the patient two or three tubes of bleaching gel and teach them how to use it. They need to use it for about 35 minutes during the day. We use Discus Dental and Opalescence, and they cost around $450.” Dr Finkelstein also uses the Zoom! in-the-chair system. “It’s a one-hour treatment and we’ve had fabulous results over the years,” he says. “For around $1000 we do the treatment in the chair and offer take-home kits, including trays and gel, for maintenance.”
■ Whitening treatments at stands in shopping centres or at beauty salons without the supervision of dentists might be a cheaper option, but you may be risking a lack of expertise. GlamSmile’s Dr Yvonne King warns, “The Australian Dental Association are not happy about these kiosks. You’ll be fine as long as everything is OK, but you don’t know how well-trained these people are or how well equipped they are to handle complications.” If you go ahead, prices start at around $170 for one treatment. ■ Bonding, in which your dentist sculpts tooth-coloured resin over existing teeth, can conceal imperfections such as spacing, chips and stains. Your smile looks straighter and more balanced and you can build out the back teeth to give the appearance of more chiselled cheekbones. Bonded resins are simple to re-polish and replace when they eventually discolour. “You can change the colour of the tooth with bonding, but it’s a temporary procedure which I use only for financial reasons,” says Dr Sandra Short. “After two years, you start to see stains and chips and they do wear down readily.” For resin bonding, you’ll pay anything between $500 and $900 per tooth.

Dental implants will replace missing teeth, while GlamSmile veneers involve no needles.
■ Dental implants are titanium rods which are threaded into the jaw to replace missing teeth, with crowns then cemented over them – usually some months later. However, technology now allows for implants to be inserted as soon as the tooth is extracted. Dr Michael Finkelstein says, “Deciding when to insert the implants depends on the amount of bone at the extraction and also if there is any infection and where the tooth is in the mouth. The products and knowledge have improved and that’s why, in some cases, implants can be inserted as soon as a tooth is extracted.” “The procedure is a lot easier if we’re inserting the implant immediately. We remove the tooth and, if the amount of bone is right and there is no infection, we screw a titanium screw into the site of the tooth. If it’s a front tooth, we may not be inclined to go in straight away, but we will if it’s a back tooth. You’ve got aesthetics to consider with the front teeth.” Dr Finkelstein adds that the cost of implants ranges between $5000 and $8000 per tooth.

■ GlamSmile porcelain veneers, which are thinner than traditional veneers, can be placed after two one-hour dental visits. The first is for a consultation, ‘before’ photos and an impression of your teeth. The veneers are placed during your second visit, usually three weeks later. In most cases, patients don’t require painful removal of healthy teeth, which means no needles, anaesthesia or drills. Not only will the veneers whiten severely stained and discoloured teeth, they can change the shape, size and alignment of your teeth. GlamSmile’s Dr Yvonne King says there are three systems – GlamSmile, GlamSmile Plus and GlamSmile Platinum, with the Plus and Platinum ranges offering greater aesthetic intricacy. She advises patients to ask their dentist for ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots of previous work. “A dentist needs to find out what result the patient is after, what really bothers them about their smile and the end result they want. We must inform the patient of all their options, the advantages and disadvantages and possible consequences of their decision.” The basic GlamSmile range costs from $5000 for the upper set, GlamSmile Plus costs between $6500 and $7000, and GlamSmile Platinum costs between $8000 and $10,000. “It depends how much work is required beforehand,” says Dr King.

A wider smile can be yours, thanks to braces, invisible plates and even jaw expansion. ■ For those wanting a ‘wider’ smile like Julia Roberts, jaw expansion, which also corrects facial contours and bite, could be the answer. Dr Cary Fraser, says, “Jaw expansion can give a broader smile and, by having the bones in a better position, it can be healthier because it opens up the sinuses. “The procedure involves what’s called a corticotomy – a slit in the bone to allow the jaws to spread apart. It uses an expander, which you wind, depending on the situation, possibly once a day. Then you need braces afterwards to align the teeth. The whole procedure can be uncomfortable and takes from one and a half to three years. It costs from $5000 to $20,000.” ■ A broader smile can also be achieved with braces. “The new type of braces uses less friction and are less painful because they use lighter wires,” says Dr Fraser. “They can be outside the teeth, giving more control and taking less time. If they’re inside the teeth, they can’t be seen, but they’re more expensive, can affect speech for a little while and take longer to work. “Doing just the front six teeth can take three months and cost around $3000. Full inside braces cost around $12,000 and you’ll be wearing them for up to two years.” ■ Dr Finkelstein recommends Invisalign as a more subtle way to sort your smile. “We use a computer to determine where we want the patient’s teeth to be and make up a sequence of 20-30 invisible mouthguards, which the patient changes every two weeks. It takes up to 18 months and costs $6000 to $11,000.”
THE ONE-VISIT SMILE LIFT
WHAT IS IT? A one-day non-invasive procedure designed to whiten teeth, brighten the smile, improve the positioning and the shape of the teeth and enhance teeth arrangement and arch width. COST Less than $10,000. HOW DOES IT WORK? “It involves application of composite on selected teeth to create the illusion of a younger, more aesthetically pleasing smile,” says Dr Sarkis Nalbandian, who regularly performs the Smile Lift in his Sydney practice. Composite veneers are bonded onto teeth to improve their appearance, with no filing or cutting of teeth. “This can be performed on people of all ages and the effect is immediate,” Dr Nalbandian adds. “If the patient has a ‘gummy’ smile, we may perform a gum lift, which involves administering a local anaesthetic.” IS IT PAINFUL? No. “It’s non-invasive and keeps options open for future treatments such as orthodontics and other complex procedures if required, because the tooth integrity is not jeopardised,” says Dr Nalbandian. Down time is minimal. RESULTS Immediate. The smile lift improves teeth colour, shape and alignment. “An additional benefit is that it gives better lip and cheek support, filling out the top lip and enhancing facial expression,” says Dr Nalbandian.

HORMONAL IMBALANCES “Our reproductive hormones can get out of balance, sometimes due to polycystic ovary syndrome,” says natural therapist and herbalist Jennifer Chalmers, co-director of Phoenix Holistic Centre in Sydney’s Bondi Junction. The delicate balance between oestrogen and progesterone may be disrupted for a whole range of reasons. “When oestrogen is allowed to dominate, weight gain is a common consequence,” Jennifer explains.

YOU MAY HAVE SYNDROME X According to Dr Sandra Cabot, in her book Syndrome X (SCB International, $29.95), if you have any three of the following problems, you may have that syndrome: fatty liver, fluid retention, hormonal imbalances, body toxicity, sluggish metabolism and an apple-shaped body. She recommends an eating plan that lowers high insulin levels, helps insulin to work better and improves liver function. Basically, that means reducing sugary foods.
Australians’ love affair with cappuccinos and lattes can whack on extra weight. In 1940 Australians consumed just 500g of coffee a year, but by 2002 people were knocking back 2kg of the stuff – along with all the milk, and perhaps sugar, that goes with it. If you like to treat yourself to “designer” coffee, make sure you opt for the light-milk version. Just by switching, you can save yourself about 315kj each cup, which equates to a saving of about 3.2kg of weight each year.
04
YOU NEED MORE PROTEIN
The importance of protein for healthy weight loss is huge. It helps build muscle and boost metabolism, while filling you up and curbing appetite. Choose good protein that’s low in fat such as egg whites, broccoli, tuna canned in water or brine, cottage cheese and lean organic chicken. It should be supplemented by some carbs, fats, lots of veg and some fruit.

CHECK YOUR THYROID Dr Michael Elstein, of Sydney’s Eternal Health Medical Centre, and author of You Have the Power! (Merit Publishing, $35), explains that your thyroid makes you burn fat and regulates metabolism. An underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism, reduces the capacity of the thyroid to burn fat, which may slow you down and be responsible for weight gain. “If you are putting on weight, have cold hands and feet, feel sluggish and slow and are losing hair, it may be worth seeing a doctor and having a proper evaluation to see if your thyroid is working properly,” he says.

Yes, we love our wine and champagne, especially during summer and the festive season. Make sure you’re not drinking too much and be careful to choose low-kilojoule alternatives. A standard-sized white wine or red wine (100ml) is worth around 300kj, so be aware of how much you’re drinking. Glasses in bars and restaurants are often huge, so either drink more slowly or ask your waiter not to fill too high. A nip of spirits (45ml) is about 440kj, so just be certain to add low-kilojoule mixers such as mineral or soda water to your liquor. Juices and full-strength soft drinks add many more kilojoules. A glass of champagne or sparkling wine (120ml) contains about 355kj, so keep to just one toast! Also, beware of those creamy cocktails – they’re laden with kilojoules.

‘DIET’ FOOD DANGERS Susan Alexander, accredited practising dietician with Alexander Dietetics, says, “Be very careful with foods marked ‘lite’ or ‘low fat’ as these often contain more sugar and total kilojoules than full-fat items. Also watch ‘diet’ biscuits and snacks, which offer little nutrition.” She adds that people can over-snack on high GI foods such as watermelon and rice crackers. “Overconsumption of these foods is turned to fat,” she says. Susan suggests grainy cereals and crackers, while keeping a watchful eye on quantities. Other things to watch are frozen yoghurt as a substitute for ice-cream, fast-food salads which may have fatty dressings or bread, cheese and bacon bits added. Beware of nuts, dried apricots and banana chips eaten in large amounts, and protein bars can have a high fat and kilojoule count.
08
YOU DON’T GO TO THE TOILET ENOUGH “People don’t go to the toilet properly and often hold kilos of poo,” says Leanne McGraw, principal therapist at Release Wellness Centre, Newtown, Sydney. “We eat three times a day and should go to the toilet just as many times, but no one does this, so we can end up holding 3kg to 10kg of extra weight in excrement,” she explains. “Many people eat well and exercise, but they still hold on to these waste products. The only way to get rid of this build-up is to have regular colonics – once a week or fortnightly.”
09
PRESCRIPTION DRUGS “A number of medications can cause weight gain,” says herbalist Jennifer Chalmers. “These include steroids such as cortisone, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics and drugs used to treat high blood pressure. HRT and the contraceptive pill can also keep on unwanted kilos, due to fluid retention.”
YOU’VE HAD TOO MUCH SALT
10
“We often hear people complaining they have put on 1kg, even 2kg, in one evening after a lapse in their diet,” says Dr Pierre Dukan, the Paris-based nutritionist and author of the best-selling The Dukan Diet (Hodder & Stoughton, $35). “When we analyse exactly what was eaten we can never track down the 75kj of food to provide these two extra kilos. It was simply the combination of an over-salty meal and drinks; salt and alcohol combine to slow down the throughput of the water drunk. Never forget that one litre of water weighs 1kg and two teaspoons of salt are enough to retain this water in your body’s tissues for a day or two.”
11
ARE YOU WELL ORGANISED IN THE KITCHEN?
According to The Biggest Loser trainer Michelle Bridges, many of her clients or contestants are disorganised in the kitchen and are “caught out” with their food choices. She says they need to think ahead to plan good, wholesome meals at regular intervals. On her Facebook page for Triumph bras she comments that she has “stock-standard shopping lists for pantry, fridge and freezer” and once a week she does a big shop, which she follows with a top-up shop for fruit and veggies. “I find people who are struggling with their weight may be starving hungry with nothing around and that’s when they are going to pick up something that’s no good for nutrition and probably full of empty kilojoules,” Michelle says. Regular shopping may seem like a chore, but being able to open a well-stocked cupboard will make it feel worthwhile.

YOU’RE IN THE MIDST OF MENOPAUSE Menopause can lead to weight gain, especially around the stomach, due to declining oestrogen levels and loss of muscle tissue. As the muscles decrease in size, the metabolism slows down. To combat this, the Victorian government recommends a low-fat, high-fibre diet and aerobic exercise plus weight training or weight-bearing exercise.
15
13
YOU’RE DEPRIVING YOURSELF OF TREATS Be like the French and eat a little of what you want, rather than depriving yourself and then having a blow-out. Mireille Guiliano, author of The French Women Don’t Get Fat Cookbook (Simon & Schuster, $35), says we should “eat for pleasure” and not for punishment.
14
16
MORE INCIDENTAL EXERCISE WILL HELP Look for ways of moving instead of being static. Rather than taking the lift or escalator, try to walk up stairs. Don’t grab buses or taxis if you can walk – plan ahead and go a little earlier so you can still get there on time. Use a bicycle when possible. Remember, cars are choking up the environment! Do your own housework and gardening, and don’t just watch your kids play – participate.
17
YOUR EXERCISE IS TOO PASSIVE
YOU’RE EATING TOO LATE AT NIGHT
HAVE YOU GOT DIABETES?
Always exercise between your minimum and maximum heart rates. Research has shown that if you keep your heart rate in this range, you’ll be more effective at improving aerobic fitness and keeping weight at an acceptable level. People often think they’re exercising properly when they’re strolling, doing some yoga or swimming, but the truth is, if the exercise is too light, it won’t help fitness or weight-loss.
Watch out for those bedtime munchies. Dietician Susan Alexander explains that any kilojoules consumed late at night will be taken to bed and may be stored as fat, rather than burnt off as energy. “Unfortunately we tend to eat more in the evening than earlier in the day, which can upset our metabolism,” she says. Avoid late-night snacks and eat bigger meals earlier rather than later.
Being predisposed to diabetes type 2 may mean you gain more weight than non-genetically prone people. In a 28-day study at Sydney’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research, during which scientists mimicked the overfeeding that takes place at Christmas, people with a family history of diabetes gained over a kilo more than those with no such history. They gained 3.4kg compared with 2.2kg.
18
YOU NEED MORE SLEEP According to Dr Michael Elstein, when we sleep we produce ghrelin, an appetite-stimulating hormone. “When you don’t get enough sleep, you’ll have an increased desire for food,” he says. Dr Elstein adds that leptin is another hormone responsible for satiety, which means it lets the body know when you’ve eaten enough. It, too, is made when you sleep and so, if you’re not getting much shut-eye, the body is not able to judge when it’s consumed enough. You’ll think you’re hungry, when really you’re not.

YOU HAVE FLUID RETENTION
BEWARE THE ‘LITTLE’ EXTRAS
Have you noticed that your legs look spongy and you seem to have cellulite that you just can’t shift? Perhaps you’re suffering from fluid retention. “Day-to-day fluctuations in weight are usually caused by changes in the fluid balance in the body,” says Jennifer Chalmers. “Severe fluid retention can indicate serious conditions with the liver and kidneys, but most fluid retention is due, somewhat surprisingly, to dehydration.” The answer is to drink more water and limit the amount of salt you’re consuming in your diet.
“What seems like nothing for one day can be a lot over the week,” comments dietician Susan Alexander. “Remember that a large latte or muffin can have more kilojoules than a small meal!” And if you think that fruit juice is fine, Susan recommends squeezing orange juice until your glass is full to see just how much you’re consuming at once. “A glassful has all the kilojoules from all the oranges used, but you’d never eat that many whole fruit at once,” she says. On top of that, juice contains very little of the fibre of a whole fruit.

Raising standards Protecting patients PATIENT INFORMATION Choosing your doctor You should choose a doctor based on the doctor’s relevant education, training, experience and proven competence with respect to the specific procedure you are considering.
Questions you should ask your doctor ■ Are you a member of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery? ■ How many times have you performed this procedure before and in the last year? ■ What are the risks associated the procedure and what is your own complication rate? ■ What are the alternatives to the procedure being considered? ■ Can I see photographs of the results of your own patients who looked similar to me before their surgery? ■ Can I see photographs of the kind of result it will be impossible for me to achieve?
The biggest factor determining what you will look like after a cosmetic procedure is what you look like now. Seeing both types of photos will help you to understand the kind of result you should realistically be able to achieve. Do not be afraid to ask these questions. No competent doctor will mind answering them.
The College has instituted a Code of Practice, which was the first medical practitioner code to be authorised by the Australian consumer watchdog, the ACCC. The Code, which was authorised after extensive public consultation, covers such things as advertising and other promotional conduct, informed consent and has an independent complaints panel. The Code provides you with greater protection and it requires all College members to meet exemplary standards – higher in some areas than that required by medical boards and other regulatory regimes – in advertising and other promotional conduct and informed consent. For more information about the Code of Practice, choosing a doctor or deciding on a cosmetic procedure, please download a copy of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery’s patient information brochure, Things you should know. A copy of the ACCS Code of practice is also available by visiting the College’s website.

Remember that cosmetic procedures are elective. You can and should delay procedures until a time that is appropriate, bearing in mind other commitments such as family or other social activities, work commitments and finance. Dr Josef Goldbaum LIPOSUCTION AUSTRALIA Q&A WITH DR GOLDBAUM I WANT TO GET LIPOSUCTION. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SKIN ONCE THE FAT IS REMOVED? The skin is very elastic and it always shrinks back. How much it shrinks back depends on your age and skin condition.
I’VE LOST FIRMNESS IN MY FACE. WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT THE JOWLS? The combination of liposculpture to the chin and jowls, together with non-surgical lifting using special threads, will often result in a fresher, younger look. Both are done under local anaesthetic only and have the added benefit of continually supporting the facial skin as the years roll on. This kind of rejuvenation to the face can also help lift neck skin, giving the neck a smoother look.

ENHANCEMENT PHALLOPLASTY (PENIS ENLARGEMENT/LENGTHENING AND WIDENING) The thickening procedure to widen the penis is done by dermal-fat grafting. The dermal-fat graft is taken from the abdomen and inserted beneath the skin of the shaft of the penis. Penile lengthening is done by cutting the ligaments at the base of the penis via a low abdominal incision. These ligaments act as the “guy ropes of the tent” and once severed allow the penis to lengthen naturally. The two procedures – widening and lengthening – can be performed simultaneously or individually. Both procedures are done as day-surgery cases under general anaesthetic. ABOUT DR MOORE Dr Moore has been in surgical practice for over 39 years, initially as a paediatric surgeon and now, after retraining and completing a two-year fellowship in cosmetic surgery in 1992-1994, he practises both. He has practised penile surgery in all its forms, including penile cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, for most of his practising life. In 1967 he developed an initial procedure for the correction of micropenis, and after reviewing his results in 1979 he developed enhancement phalloplasty (penis enlargement), for which he holds medical patents. His procedure is the only one that consistently results in increased length when both flaccid and erect; other procedures are only able to increase the flaccid length. He is heavily involved in the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery, both as a teacher and as an examiner for the final fellowship examination.

FACIAL HARMONY This patient presented to our clinic with the following concerns: breathing and sinus congestion, a bump on the nose, plus excessive view of the nostrils. After extensive consultation and examination we looked to computer imaging to design a nose in harmony with the face. She underwent surgery to improve her breathing and sinus condition, decrease the bump, refine the tip and address the nostril view. Post-operatively we see an elegant, natural nose in harmony with the face.

“natural, individually tailored results” DR MARCELLS FINDS THAT, FOR MANY, THE GREATEST MOTIVATING FACTOR FOR COSMETIC SURGERY IS TO REDRESS THE IMBALANCE ONE MAY FEEL BETWEEN THEIR AGEING VISAGE, AND A STILL YOUTHFUL WELLBEING. “FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY TODAY IS ABOUT DELIVERING A NATURAL RESULT, TAILORED TO THE INDIVIDUAL,” HE SAYS. Dr Michael Zacharia DR ZACHARIA’S ROOMS Q&A WITH DR ZACHARIA WHERE DO YOU PERFORM YOUR SURGERIES? Bondi Junction Private Hospital, although I also operate in both Brisbane and Darwin.
HOW HAVE YOU MODIFIED YOUR TECHNIQUES TO REMAIN UP TO DATE? The best way to keep up to date is to attend both local and international conferences, but by far and away I get the most information by attending other doctors’ practices and spending time with them in the operating theatre. I try to go to the USA or Europe every six to 12 months.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED? To listen to other people’s advice and treat the patient as I would like to be treated.

Dr Con Moshegov PERFECT VISION LASER CORRECTION Q&A WITH DR MOSHEGOV WHAT DOES A CONSULTATION WITH YOU CONSIST OF? It’s a very thorough eye examination. This starts with a full history of eye problems and medical background. Then a measurement of the prescription in the patient’s glasses, an assessment of the actual spectacle error, corrected visual acuity, corneal shape, corneal thickness and aberrations in the optical system. The eyes are then medically examined to assess dryness, chronic conditions, exclude glaucoma, cataract, macular problems and infectious conditions.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE INVOLVED IN VISION CORRECTION? Four main ones: LASIK, LASEK (PRK), phakic intraocular lens implantation and refractive lens exchange.

Dr Sarkis Nalbandian DESIGNER SMILES Q&A WITH DR NALBANDIAN ARE BEAUTIFUL SMILES WITHIN EVERYONE’S REACH? Yes, definitely. Using concepts of today’s noninvasive dentistry we have reached many people from all walks of life and provided them with immediate smile improvement. Our practice is not about invasive procedures – it’s about improving the patient’s dental health and smile using minimally and non-invasive dental treatment modalities. We prefer to preserve the natural tooth wherever possible, which is in the best interest of the patients.
IN WHAT WAYS IS DENTISTRY LIKE ART? There is a difference between looking and seeing. You must visualise. The smile is multifactorial in nature and needs to be considered in terms of the whole face for optimum results.

Dr Robert Drielsma SYDNEY COSMETIC PLASTIC SURGERY Q&A WITH DR DRIELSMA WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO PLASTIC SURGERY? HELLO, CHEEKBONES! ALMOND EYES Defy droopy eyes with the help of eyeliner. To visually lift the outer corners of your eyes, line your upper lashes with black eyeliner, making the line slightly thicker at the outer corners. Finish with a flick before applying mascara over the upper lashes. A liquid eyeliner like Max Factor Masterpiece Glide & Define Liquid Eyeliner, $19.95, will give you a more precise application.
BROW-RAISING TIPS Your brows are a powerful anti-ageing feature. When shaped and filled in, they can provide you with an instant facelift. If your brows have become sparse with age, simply fill them in with a brow pencil one shade lighter than your brows (unless you’re blonde, in which case try one shade darker) to help emphasise your bone structure and create a fuller appearance. Use short, feathering strokes and concentrate colour along the top edges of brows. To improve their shape, consult a professional who can guide you in the right direction; one shape doesn’t fit all! Follow their tips to shape your brows at home with the help of a shaping kit such as Benefit Brow Zings, $55.
GET GLOWING Bronzer is a great tool for enhancing mature skin, but only when applied correctly. “Firstly, remember there is a big difference between sun-kissed and sun-tanned skin,” advises Estée Lauder’s premier make-up artist Jahi Ireland. Using a matte bronzer, gently sweep all over your face with a large make-up brush. “Pay attention to no area in particular and make sure it is applied evenly,” says Jahi. We like Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Soft Matte Bronzer, $68. Finish with soft pink blush over the cheekbones for a natural glow.
Anyone can fake chiselled cheekbones with the help of a contouring and highlighting blush. Use a duo such as Bourjois Sculpting Duo Effect Blush in Medium Pink, $23, applying the darker shade from the hollow of your cheek (just beneath the cheekbone) up towards your temples. The goal is to create a shadow which adds definition to your facial features. Be sure to blend away any harsh lines. Next, highlight your bone structure by sweeping the lightest shade over the top of your cheekbones. Now that your cheeks are defined, you can leave them as they are or finish off by applying your favourite blush shade over the apples of your cheeks. MORE ›

PLUMP YOUR POUT Age may have left you with thinner lips and fine lines, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with them. To make lips appear fuller, dab a sheer gloss in the centre of your lower lip to reflect light. Another option is to apply a lipplumping gloss throughout the day.
CAMOUFLAGE Used correctly, concealer can be your best friend. Used incorrectly and, well, you’re likely to add years to your look rather than take them away. So it’s definitely worth learning how to get it right! Start with a concealer that’s one shade lighter than your skin tone and has a yellow base, as this will offset the blue tones of your circles. Try Covergirl & Olay Simply Ageless Eye Concealer in Light Medium, $17.95. After your foundation has set, dab concealer (using your index finger or concealer brush) over the whole under-eye area, including under your lash line and on the inner corner towards the bridge of your nose. Build the coverage with layers rather than one thick coat, allowing each application to set before applying another. Once you’ve reached your desired coverage and your dark circles have vanished, set the concealer with a thin layer of translucent mineral powder.

PRIME YOUR CANVAS
FAUX FLUTTER As we age, our eyelashes become dry and brittle, which causes them to thin out and lose their colour. To fake a fuller appearance, apply false lashes. Use individual lashes, which allow you to add thickness where it’s most needed. Try Revlon Fantasy Lengths Maximum Wear Lashes, $9.99.
WHITER WHITES A navy eyeliner is great for offsetting the yellow effects of ageing around the eyes. Apply along the upper lash line and outer corner. Try Revlon Luxurious Color Eyeliner in Blackened Sapphire, $23.95.
YOUNG AT HAND “Mature hands are prone to dryness, which highlights fine lines and discolouration,” explains Fiona Hay, ORLY’s creative director.
She recommends keeping hands well moisturised by applying a hand cream a few times a day and exfoliating once or twice a week with a good hand scrub. Just as your hands show wrinkles with age, so do your nails. “Our nails show signs of ageing by forming ridges on the nail plates,” says OPI educator Karon McKendrick-Taylor. Contour the peaks of these ridges with a gentle buff and fill in the valleys with a product like OPI Ridge Filler, $19.95. Once applied, your lacquer will appear smoother – Karon recommends darker shades, which make skin appear whiter, brighter and more youthful.
MAKE-UP
Primer is probably one of those products you’re not too familiar with, but it will change your life. Not only does it help foundation stay in place longer, but for mature skin it’s great for filling in fine lines, evening out skin tone, and reducing shine. Look for primers that contain silicone, as it blurs fine lines and gives skin a fresh and smooth finish. We recommend Jan Mirini Age Intervention Prime Face Primer, $96.
MILLION-DOLLAR SMILE Yellow teeth are a sign you’ve enjoyed all the vices of adulthood, such as coffee, red wine and cigarettes. There are many great ways to return your teeth to a whiter, more youthful, shade, including home-whitening kits (see ‘Sunny Smiles’, page 68), but you don’t always have enough time to spare. For an immediate improvement, apply a cool-toned lipstick. Eight colours in the Clinique range have been identified as making lips appear up to two shades whiter. BASE CAMP While you may think that the more wrinkles you have, the heavier your foundation needs to be, this is not the case. A thick application will sink into your wrinkles and further accentuate them. Instead, try a tinted moisturiser or lightweight foundation and apply only on the areas that need covering up. We love Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Foundation, $23.50, because it is both lightweight and contains anti-ageing ingredients which firm and tone the skin throughout the day.
MAKE-UP
EYES BRIGHT Coloured contact lenses may be one way to enhance your eyes, but if you’d prefer a more fuss-free way, the right coloured eyeshadow can be ultra-effective. ■ BLUE EYES Want to make your blue eyes pop? Then opt for shades darker than your eye colour. Tones of silver, turquoise and fuchsia will also brighten your blue peepers. ■ GREEN EYES Emerald eyes come to life with browns, peach, purple, deep plum, khaki and forest greens. For night, opt for golds, lime greens and vibrant purples. ■ BROWN EYES Don’t despair, brown-eyed girls – your eyes actually respond the best to a little colour. Use shades such as copper, bronze or brown to accent your eyes. Want to wear more colour? Try khaki green, royal blue, hot pink or lime green for a vibrant effect.
DOWNPLAY WRINKLES AND LINES If you’re not ready to take the botox plunge, try an instant filler. Freezeframe with Inhibox, $89, freezes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for several hours.
CREATIVE CONTOURING Not blessed with a perfect oval-shaped face? Don’t worry. A little strategic contouring will help you transform its natural shape in no time at all. Follow these simple steps to bring out your features.
ROUND FACE
HEART-SHAPED FACE
1. To create a slimmer face, use a large, round make-up brush. Dip into highlighting powder and shake off excess. Sweep powder across the middle of your chin, forehead and the area between the top of your cheekbones and just beneath your eyes, using long, broad strokes. 2. With a clean make-up brush, apply bronzer across cheeks, temples and jawline to contour your face. Choose a bronzer two shades darker than your natural skin tone. This will give the appearance of a more oval, slimmer face.
1. S tart off by highlighting the area between the top of your cheekbones and underneath the eyes with highlighting powder. This will create the illusion of a broader forehead and will direct attention to the centre of your face. 2. Next, minimise the width of your face by applying bronzer or pressed powder over the contours of your cheeks and temples.
LONG FACE
1. Your aim with a square face shape is to add length through the centre. Contour your temples and the corners of your jawline with bronzer. 2. Apply highlighting powder to your upper cheekbones, the middle of your forehead and the tip of your chin. This will draw attention to the middle of your face and away from its square edges.
1. S kip the highlighting powder if you have this face shape as it will only elongate your face further. Instead sweep bronzer across your chin to make it appear shorter. 2. Next, apply blush over the apples of your cheeks and out towards the top of your ears. This will balance out the length of your face.
SQUARE FACE

STARS THERE ARE PLENTY OF FLATTERING HAIRSTYLES TO SUIT YOU. FROM PONYTAILS TO BOBS, CROPS AND UP-’DOS, WE SHARE HOW TO STYLE YOUR HAIR, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE. BY CHELSEA TROMANS
Forget the nasty rumour that says you have to cut off all your hair when you grow older. Just check out celebrities such as Demi Moore, Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman. Long hair needs extra attention to look its best, though – give yourself weekly treatments and regular trims. “While cutting your hair may seem like the last thing you want to do when going for length, it keeps hair healthy and prevents you from having to chop off a big chunk later, after the split ends kick in,” says Barney Martin, Pantene’s expert hair stylist. The effort will be well worth it. Long hair with soft layers and flattering highlights will bring a youthful glow to your complexion.
LONG HAIR
50s
CHRISTIE BRINKLEY Wearing your hair long in your 50s is definitely doable – just look at Christie. Take her lead and ask your hairdresser for shorter layers that frame the face and a sweeping side fringe to keep the look fresh.
40s
BROOKE SHIELDS To take long hair from 30s to 40s, switch to a side part. Don’t be afraid to swap between a straight style and big bouncy curls – you can easily wear both! Just make sure your style doesn’t sit flat at the roots.

30s
PENÉLOPE CRUZ Penélope’s long layers and highlights are well-suited to women in their 30s. Ask your hairdresser for length through your layers and contrasting highlights. To style your hair like Penélope’s, apply a curl-enhancing cream and blow-dry with a diffuser attachment. Use your fingers rather than a brush to shape hair as you dry. Introduce soft waves with a medium-barrel curling iron. A shine-enhancing spray to finish will keep hair smooth and shiny on the surface. MORE ›

JANUARY JONES A messy, layered bob like January’s is a slightly shorter style with sexy tousles that are perfect for women in their 30s. “To achieve this look, start by washing your hair with a texturising shampoo and conditioner,” says Brad. “Apply thickening product or styling foam and dry using a diffuser. Apply sea salt spray for added texture and then scrunch dry.” At night backcomb your hair at the roots to make it bigger and better.
40s
NAOMI WATTS The long bob is so versatile. Naomi’s collarbone A-line bob with a soft, side-swept fringe is a classic cut and is perfect for any age. To create this look, wash your hair with a volumising shampoo and conditioner. Then, after applying a heat protector, blast your style dry on a high heat setting. Use a GHD Styler to straighten, and finish with a lightweight gloss spray.

HAIR
BOBS & LOBS The bob, and the longer ‘lob’, have really taken off as favourite hairstyles. Great, low-maintenance cuts, they’re perfect for busy women on the go. “These styles suit all types of face and age,” says Brad Ngata, former Australian Hairdresser of the Year and owner and creative director of Brad Ngata Hair Direction, Sydney. To take the look through the ages, Brad recommends changing the colour from time to time for more impact and edginess and to add another dimension to your cut. The great thing about the bob and the lob is their versatility. When cutting your hair, opt for one length (think Anna Wintour) or alternatively plenty of layers (like Victoria Beckham). When styling, wear them sleek and straight for a sophisticated look, add loose bouncy curls and a vintage clip for a glamorous appearance, or create a sexy vibe with an undone texture. To further vary the look, play up your fringe and opt for a blunt cut or a soft, side-swept style. And what exactly is a lob? A lob is effectively a longer bob that can be anything from mid-neck to collarbone length.
50s
SHARON STONE Sharon’s blow-dry creates soft, youthful texture that can be worn from day to evening. For night, keep your hairstyle the same but update your make-up to a smoky eye or bold lip – just don’t do both at the same time.
60s PLUS DIANE KEATON We really love Diane’s layered, textured bob. Ask your hairdresser for face-framing layers and soft highlights. Create Diane’s chic bed-head texture with a styling mousse and large, round brush when blow-drying.

SHORT STYLES The short, textured cut of a pixie crop is great for softening your facial features. Adjust your cut to suit your face shape: for a rounder face, Joey Scandizzo, director of Sebastian Professional’s Urban Design Team, advises adding a little length around the sides, and for a large forehead go for a slightly longer fringe. What’s hot for the crop right now? “Shorter crops are looking precise to complement the well-finished haircuts that are coming back in,” says Joey. “It’s about polished and glamorous styles again, like it was in the 1960s – think Twiggy or Sassoon haircuts from his heyday.”
40s
HALLE BERRY You probably want your crop to look more natural and professional in this age group, as Halle has. Ask your hairdresser for a more precise cut around the back while making sure to still keep it soft around the face. “This will give definition and boldness but will also flatter the face – softer cuts always flatter the face better,” says Joey.
30s
GINNIFER GOODWIN At this age you have the freedom to make this cut edgy. Go for lots of texture to create a gritty, raw finish. For more versatility, keep top layers long and wear them combed down for a front fringe, or up and back for a voluminous finish. We love the softness Ginnifer has gone for on the red carpet – perfect for a feminine feel. 124

50s
SIGRID THORNTON When you get into your 50s, wear this cut slightly longer and use your styling tools (hot rollers, curling wands and blowdryers) to soften it. You’ll want lots of layers and texture to give the ends a feathered look, and also add a long fringe. Go light on the styling products – it’s all in the way your hair’s been cut.
60s PLUS
JANE FONDA As your hair gets older it loses volume, so opt for a style similar to that in your 50s, but add volumising products for plenty of body. Whether you embrace your grey hairs or dye over them, adding highlights and lowlights will complement your style no matter what. MORE › 125

PONYTAILS You may think ponytails only suit schoolgirls and twentysomething women, but you’d be wrong. A ponytail is a very adaptable hairstyle and can look great at any age. “Be adventurous: there are no rules for this style,” says Clive Allwright, international artistic director of KMS California and director and co-owner of Our Place Salon, in Sydney’s Potts Point. “Remember, perfection is not always the key to achieving a great style.” For inspiration, you should always feel comfortable discussing new ways of wearing your hair with your hairdresser. “A good stylist will suggest two or three different ways to wear a haircut like this,” says Clive. Ask questions like how to wear it up or down, what suits your face shape, and what products you should use in different ways.
30s
EVA MENDES If you’re in your 30s, just about any ponytail style will suit you. A high and tight look like Eva’s is great for accentuating your cheekbones. “Most women in their 30s start showing signs of grey hair – balayage is a great technique for blending those greys, keeping your hair looking cool and funky,” says Kelly Grant, co-owner of Our Place Salon.

40s
CATE BLANCHETT Who would have thought a ponytail could make Cate look so youthful in her 40s? Copy her style with a softly curled and loose ponytail for a sexy, yet elegant look. “A great way to give more elegance to this shape is to set the hair first,” recommends Clive. This will give the hair more bounce and sophistication. “If you are conscious of your ears sticking out when wearing a ponytail, gently and lightly pull a few wisps of hair out from in front of the ear.”
50s
JULIANNE MOORE Not all women at this age can pull off a tight ponytail, but Clive knows the best tricks to ensuring it will work for those who want to give it a try, like Julianne, who’s about to turn 50. Make this look wearable by creating body at the top and leaving loose, wispy strands around the crown. Add movement through your lengths by tonging large sections after styling hair into a midheight ponytail. Tip: In your 50s, keep your ponytail at a medium height, rather than high at the crown.
60s PLUS VANESSA REDGRAVE See? Even in your 60s and over you can master a ponytail. At this age, it’s a case of the lower the better. Keep the look tidy and natural; a messy, undone texture will look unruly rather than sexy. We love Vanessa’s creative spin on a low ponytail; her twisted braid on the side is a fresh way to add variety to this simple ‘do. Create a finesse finish with accessories, such as a beautiful handmade slide comb or barrette.

UP-’DOS 30s ANGELINA JOLIE In your 30s, keep your up-’do fresh and modern. Whether you choose to add plenty of body, wear it in a bun to the side, or pulled tight back, stick to an unstructured style for a carefree elegance. To transform Angelina’s up-’do to an everyday look, tone down the volume and opt for a smaller bun at the back.
40s
DEMI MOORE At this age, you want to exude sexy sophistication so your up-’do should be gently structured, with a glossy finish. We love Demi’s long, side-swept fringe for a fresh finish to this elegant up-’do. For a daytime look, keep your bun low but play with your fringe; try parting in the centre and only leave a few strands out around the front.

“A loose, tousled bun is an everclassic up-style,” says Damien Rinaldo, hair director for the Perth Fashion Festival and ambassador for L’Oréal Professionnel. For those with a long or slim face, Damien advises styling up-’dos with width. He suggests trying a bouncy blow-dry or the Grecian bun. “If you have curly hair, enhance its own curl and then make use of its height and bounce, as this will look give you a more natural look,” he says. For a round face shape, style with long layers around the face because these will elongate it, as will a ponytail or bun tied below your jawline. If your face is square, on the other hand, choose hairstyles that introduce roundness to your face, such as long, wavy bangs. You should avoid blunt fringes and centre-parts. Damien has one final tip for up-’dos at any age: “As a simple rule, if you’re in your 20s to mid30s, you can wear any up-’do a little messy or wispy in texture, but for ages 35-plus I’d recommend something more sleek and classic for a fresh, clean look,” he says. “Top knots, chignons or buns can be really feminine and elegant.”

HELEN MIRREN If your hair is starting to thin and sit quite limply, teasing is your best friend. Add body at the roots and let your layers softly frame your face like Helen has. An asymmetric style will add dimension to your up-’do. For a heart-shaped face like Helen’s, you’ll want to make your forehead appear less wide while broadening your jawline. The most flattering styles are full around the jaw, centre or off-centre parted and then finished with a slanted fringe. 129

REALITY
I am on the horns of a dilemma. Should I get something unnatural yet liberating done to my face? It’s bizarre. At my mature, confident age, I should be comfortable in my own skin instead of smoothing it. I am feeling The Pressure. The Pressure I’ve resisted since I was a teenager and refused to wear make-up and shave my legs and armpits. We had hair down to there, everywhere. We threw away our bras. Women’s lib was reaching its furball crescendo. My mother used to say “Please wear some make-up! You look so much better with it.” This from a generation of women who never went out the door without “putting on their face”. The Max Factor Hijab. I won’t even tell you what she said about my hair shorts. Yes, it’s The Pressure, at any age, to be Barbie. Now I’m in my 50s, and women I admire, like Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep, look younger than me. How can I look good for my age when women 10 years older look good for my age? Why am I withering like a prune when a complexion like a plump plum is just a jab away? The truth is I’m reluctant to endure pain, however piddling. Don’t women have enough pain with motherhood and shoes? Take Botox. I’m scared of strangers inserting into my skin needles full of substances I wouldn’t use to clear my sink. The skin is the body condom that stops nasties getting in. There are billions of bugs just on the top of your soap dispenser. I’ve seen the ads. What if a mere microscopic smear of those bugs gets beneath my skin and I contract an incurable infection? What if I have surgery and get Jacksonitis? They say after surgery you end up looking like your younger sister. Michael Jackson didn’t look like his younger sister, he looked like Voldemort’s younger sister. What if there’s a slight slip of the knife or the needle and I end up with an expression that isn’t mine? I’m used to my face. When I catch a glimpse of it in passing mirrors, sure, I’m constantly startled that my father seems to be looking back at me, but I know my face. What if I acquire a permanent sneer or sardonic smirk? And every time I glance in the mirror I see a snide look that says, “You’re so shallow, you believed a superficial change would get you more jobs or men or love or take away the desperate fear of old age. No wonder you sneer.” See? I’m not ready. I am strong, I am invincible, I am a wuss. I’ll just get my roots done instead.
