QUILT OF ENLIGHTENMENT LIBRARY, SAN FRANCISCO, CA - 3RD YR T. FOWLER

The library derives spaces from the nature of a quilt in which program strips are “woven” together in alternating directions. The strips of space decrease in width to accommodate for an increase in density as the experience on each floor transitions from a public gathering space to a private search. The ceiling height from floor to floor also increases to heighten the progression and final “holy” experience: one feels alone among the vast collection of information. As one rises through this progression of density, each space, through the thinning of volumes, decreases in noise level, and promotes an increasingly private experience. The cladding becomes more sealed and the mentality more focused. As one returns downward their newfound knowledge sets in while the cladding re-opens allowing in more light. The spaces widen to allow more people per room and the individual can contribute to community enlightenment by sharing their new discovery.

Physical model explores the structural integrity of steel columns and woven program strips. The model also represents the density of the cladding frame increasing towards the top, more private spaces, and the simultaneous thinning and heightening of both program strips and frosted walkway system. Users would weave in and out of clad vs frosted environments in their search for information.

CONVERGING CURRENTS MULTI-PURPOSE HOUSING COMPLEX & WOOD MANUFACTURING FACILITY, REDHOOK, NY *

This project creates two axes: a bridge from the natural parks into the heart of the city to channel bikers and city dwellers through the site and on to enjoy existing resources, and the second tying the industrial port to the residential zones expressing the possibility for world business endeavors and access to new jobs and education to the residents of Red Hook. Where the two axes meet an oculus is formed to expose the multitude of uses within the complex and the users to one another. The housing complex lies closest to the heart of the city and is raised to the fourth floor to ensure everyone with a view out to the bay. A strip of green reaches through the housing complex to invite the city in. This multi-function complex will provide the city with new opportunities by inspiring, teaching and pushing forward the promising future of timber construction.

PLASTIC PETALS CO-LEAD DESIGNER & BUILDER, OF CENTERPEICE INSTALLATION

Plastic Petals began as an intensive design charette. With the materials we were able to acquire and the ideas we wanted to incorporate, stemmed a pneumatic structure that reflected the cycle of Zero Waste. Visitors could take pieces of the structure and MAKE them into bags to use throughout the day. This guarantees the reuse of the material and gives visitors a lasting momento of the Faire. This iconic piece provoked many visitors to check out this new SLO tradition! Petals are reduced from the canopy while new materials are recycled within the tree’s roots. to cause the form to contract above and expand below. Plastic petals displays that despite our dependence on this material we can still lead it through the ideal sustainable cycle.

5TH YEAR THESIS PROJECT

WE CRAVE SPONTANEOUS URBAN ENCOUNTERS YET OUR CURRENT CITY MODEL, BASED ON LARGE SWATHS OF NON-SPACE FOR TRANSIT, LACKS THE PUBLIC PLATFORM NEEDED TO SATISFY OUR SOCIAL NATURE. THIS INFRASTRUCTURE RE-IMAGINES THE LOS ANGELES FREEWAY NETWORK AS A PUBLIC SPACE THAT CONNECTS THE CITY WITH ITS INHABITANTS.
