1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE Point line plane explores dimensions, and how form is created. The transformation of a one dimensional point, to a two dimensional line, to a three dimensional plane. The use of all three can create dynamic forms, that expose all of its members as skeletal parts of a structure. This exercise involves both stripping a form to its bare, and transforming something plain into complexity.

1.2 MASS / The concept of mass invites a person to explore space, both negative and positive, and consider the effect it has on us in a given place. The notion of being free in an open place, to the claustrophobia of crowded, small, dark places. The use of the earth and use of space allow for this concept to be explored through various forms.

1.3 FRAME / INFILL The notion of frame and infill mirrors the idea of negative and positive space, and the concept of opacity. The removal of planes and lines removes the solidity from a form, and adds open and closed spaces, implies entrance and exit from a structure, and controls light and darkness. This exercise practises design practicality, and how the use of frame and infill may create direction in a space.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS / Herring island is surrounded by both NATURAL and INDUSTRIAL landscapes, being immersed in the YARRA RIVER, neighbouring BURNLEY (an industrial suburb), and COMO PARK (a natural and historical location). The island is accessible by both WALKING, CAR, and BICYCLE, as the YARRA TRAIL surrounds the island. There is a CAFÉ near the boat docks, and also a few BOAT SHEDS for rowers using the river. The island acts both as a NATURAL LANDSCAPE, but also a space in which SCULPTURE, ART and ARCHITECTURE is harnessed and expressed.

Herring Island is composed of both open spaces, shallow and dense vegetation. There are paths that have been constructed, however these are only implied. There are areas in which you may travel outside of the paths, given the organic growth is not an obstruction. The main noise sources are from Alexandra Avenue and from the Monash freeway/Burnley tunnel. There is of course the separation of the island from the mainland, with the Yarra River running around it. Existing artworks are present on the island, as is a gallery that is opened seasonally for the enjoyment of the public. The art pieces are both sculptural, and architectural. PROVIDED WALKING PATHS

2.2 CONCEPTACLE / Herring island offers a landscape that combines EARTH, AIR and WATER, which allows its users to explore a VARIETY of ELEMENTS in the same space. The presence of the water implies a certain BOUNDARY, as users see the water as a space that is INACCESSIBLE; this therefore allows for design around the MASS of the island that BREAKS the BOUNDARIES between the WATER and the EARTH.
The SCULPTURAL PIECES that are featured on the island give CONTEXT for the proposed design, and perhaps needs to be MIMICED or CONTRASTED. The CHANGES in TOPOGRAPHY allow for the user to experience different LEVELS and see different SIGHTS in many PERSPECTIVES. As the island in itself holds SECRETS and different PATHWAYS to access these, the design should REFLECT the same nature of SECRECY and DISCOVERY.

To the left are instances and examples in which water has been used in the design of a space. I wished to use a series of steps, levels, and organic elements within my design, along with the integration of water. These precedents provide source of this kind of design, and demonstrate its viability.
