Personal Confessions Psalm 91 & Joshua 1:9 Who would have ever thought we would be here at this time. A time where a rogue virus attacks not just a community, not just a country, but a world. COVID-19 is one of the few evils that have no specific political affiliation, economic, cultural, age, or ethic target. Anyone and everyone is fair game. So what is our response? What globally can we do to eradicate this rogue virus? The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is considered the expert authority on infectious diseases and has issued prevention guidelines that we should follow in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19. In addition, we can also take an approach called FAITH. Below is a personal confession based on Psalm 91 and Joshua 1:9. PSALM 91: I live in the shelter of the Most High. I find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. God, you are my refuge and my fortress. In YOU I trust. You rescue me from every trap and from deadly disease. You cover me with your feathers and shelter me under your wings. Your truth is my armor. I will not be afraid of the terror by night or the arrows that fly by day. I do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness or the disaster that strikes at noon. A thousand shall fall at my side and ten thousand at my right hand, but this evil will not touch me. With my eyes I will see how the wicked are punished. God, I have made you my refuge. Most High I have made you my shelter and no evil will conquer me. No plague will come near my homes. God, you have ordered your angels to protect me no matter where I go. The angels hold me up with their hands so that I won’t ever hit my foot on a stone. I will trample on lions and snakes; I will crush the head of the enemy under my feet. God, because I love you, you rescue me. You protect me because I trust you. You will answer me when I call. You are with me in trouble. You rescue and honor me. With long life you will satisfy me and I have great salvation Joshua 1:9 I am strong and courageous. I am not afraid or dismayed for the Lord My God is with me wherever I go.

His editing techniques, creative eye, and

ability to create unique and engaging content, stands out among others. You can always recognize an Alen Palander image. He offers tutorials and insight into the world of photography on his YouTube channel and Instagram which I think could help inspire any content creator as it did for me.

My interest in photography grew from

the love I had for drawing and the

creative arts as a whole back in 2009. I started taking pictures with my phone camera and developed a passion for editing those same pictures with editing software on the computer. Later I purchased my first camera, a Canon Rebel, and began exploring how images would look from the perspective of a different lens. Lifestyle and editorial images are what I enjoy photographing the most. Both types are traits that define my style and who I am as a photographer. I enjoy the simple approach for capturing moments as they happen and telling a visual story (sometimes written) for each project. I've had many influences in recent years

It's kind of hard to say there's one thing I regret not knowing before becoming a photographer. As an artist, so much of finding out what you're passionate about creating and why, leads you down a path to finding out who YOU really are. I love the journey I've been placed on because I've learned so much about myself and my craft that has shaped me into who I've become and I truly value that. The most rewarding parts of being a photographer are being able to experience new things while doing something I'm passionate about. I enjoy following my own creative path and remaining authentic to what makes me a photographer which is what I always hope to convey through my work.

but Toronto-based photographer Alen Palander's work has influenced me the most. Y&R

TRAILBLAZER

JOYCE DANIELS

Interview with Cosmetologist and Creative, Joyce Daniels, owner of Joy's Perfection, LLC II am so honored that Ms. Joyce Daniels was willing to appear in this quarter's issue of N.A.I. Magazine. Ms. Daniels has been my hair stylist of choice for a number of years. Her hands are anointed, her personality is breathtaking and her creations are amazing. SO JOYCE, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A HAIR STYLIST BY TRADE? I’ve always loved doing hair from a child. If I wasn’t styling my doll babies hair I was greasing my Grandma’s scalp and / or doing my hair. In Junior High School, I began coloring my own hair sketching hairstyles and taking them to stylist to be cut into that look. After that I would maintain and create different looks from that one cut. FROM WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION? I have a pet peeve with unkempt hair or hair that is not healthy. I have two mottos: (1) “If your hair isn’t becoming to you then you should be coming to me”; (2) #HEALTHY HAIR I DO CARE. There are a great number of stylists who can give you an amazing look, but at the end of the day if the hair itself isn’t healthy it won’t be long before it leaves your head. Lol HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT HAIRSTYLE LOOKS BEST FOR A CLIENT? I generally look at my client’s features to determine what look to give them, if they TRAILBLAZER

don’t already have a desired look in mind. Also, I will comb and style their hair to see what looks best on them. .HOW DO YOU KEEP UP-TO-DATE ON THE LATEST TRENDS? I go to Hair Shows, follow different stylist on Instagram, checkout what people like Kim Kimble and The Razor Chic and others are doing as well as my coworkers. I put no limits on who I can learn from. WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD ONE ASK WHEN SEARCHING FOR A NEW STYLIST IN A NEW AREA? Questions to ask a stylist if you are new to an area to me would depend on what they are looking for. Most clients either will google salons in their area and checkout their website to see what they offer and more times then not when they see someone’s life hair that they admire they will enquirer with the individual asking for their stylist’s information. Interviewer: Thank you Joyce. It has been a pleasure. Instagram - @Joys12345 Facebook Joyce Daniels LinkedIn Joyce Daniels E-mail: JoyceDaniels67@gmail.com

Three Things: Due to the closure of cultural institutions and the postponement of related events resulting from the outbreak of the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic, this writer deems it necessary to offer a different type of column at this time. Therefore, I invite you to join me in reflecting upon some recent occurrences and to consider alternative experiences. First of all, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation for the life of a giant in art history who passed away earlier this month--- David C. Driskell. An artist, curator and visionary, Dr. Driskell did more than anyone else to ensure African American Art’s appropriate place in the academic canon. Secondly, I would like to call attention to an exhibition that you might not have a chance to see, Riffs and Relations: African American Artists and the European Modernist Tradition, now under lock and key at the Phillips Collection and scheduled to close on May 24, 2020. ”Riffs and Relations,” organized with the highest level of research and curatorial selection by Dr. Adrienne Childs, exemplifies the paradigms that David Driskell worked so diligently to foster during his long career. Lastly, I recommend a short but copiously researched book: White Flights: Race, Fiction, and the American Imagination by Jess Row.

Reflecting On The Arts: An Alternative Experience

N.A.I. MAGAZINE - PAGE 22

The Washington, D.C. born college professor and fiction writer, Row does not focus on the tendency of whites abandoning cities and moving to the suburbs to avoid integrated communities--- as his title might suggest.

David C. Driskell of Hyattsville, Maryland (1931-2020) who died on April 1, endeavored to authenticate the field of African American art history. As the pivotal figure in this effort, he was an inspiration and mentor for numerous artists, curators and scholars who followed his example to support an outcome whereby now, African American arts were not only regarded as a significant discipline but also occupies an essential place in American art as well as modern and contemporary art globally. Two Centuries of Black American Art, the landmark exhibition that Driskell organized for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1976, with more than two hundred works by nearly 70 artists and its accompanying publication, triggered a paradigm-shift. The exhibition clearly confirmed that artists of color had been producing superior work since this country’s beginnings as well as throughout the early part of the 20th century--- when influences of European modernism entered the nation’s art and cultural consciousness. Moreover, Two Centuries of Black American Art also, confirmed that African American artists consistently created high caliber work up to the time of America’s Bicentennial---the occasion for which the exhibition was mounted. In his career as an artist and a teacher, Driskell made vital contributions to the field. He taught art history at several institutions, including Howard University and Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he chaired the art department. Subsequently, he moved back to this area and joined the faculty at the University of Maryland. In 2001, the David C. Driskell Center was established at the University of Maryland for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora. It honors his legacy as a distinguished university professor emeritus, artist, art historian, collector and curator. For more on this remarkable life, visit the following sites: The David C. Riffs and Relations African American Artists and the European Modernist Tradition February 29 - May 24, 2020 Located near DuPont Circle in Washington, D.C., the Phillips Collection is America’s first museum of Modern Art and holds one of the most important collections of modernist art in the country. Recently, the Phillips invited the art historian Adrienne Childs to curate an exhibition based on ideas that she had long been researching: the distinctive relationship of African American artists and European modernism. The invitation was not a novel gesture for the institution. During its formative years, the founders Duncan and Marjorie Phillips, maintained a strong and supportive relationship with many artists of color as well as the art department at Howard University.

Book Review

White Flights: Race, Fiction, and the American Imagination Jess Row’s 2019 book offers wide-ranging and in-depth commentary that addresses a significant but troubling subject--- the common practice by white writers (from the Civil Rights era to the present) to locate their stories in all white environments--- or if minorities are present, they are ambiguously represented. Row meticulously documents the labors of numerous authors of American literature who have: “consciously or unconsciously retreated from the subject of race while black writers did not.” Row, who is white, almost committed the “cardinal sin” himself but came into “enlightenment.” While in college, he was like many other writers and was fascinated by what might be called sheltered settings. He described his position as “being in the thrall of wilderness Culturally Speaking

as a literary trope.” Fortunately, he had an epiphany. In 1992, he attended a writing workshop that was conducted by the late (Nobel Prize in Literature and a Pulitzer Prize in Fiction) writer Toni Morrison. In her early role as an editor at Random House in the 1970’s, Morrison had fostered the publication of works by black writers but that day in her role as speaker at the William E. Massey Sr. Lectures in the History of American Civilization at Harvard, Morrison did not promote or discuss African American literature. She addressed “Whiteness.” Shortly thereafter, Morrison published Playing in the Dark: Whiteness in the Literary Imagination. A work of criticism, the book is a collection of three essays about race in N.A.I. MAGAZINE - PAGE 25

American literature and it documents the way race is exploited by many white authors. Morrison admitted that as a black writer she struggled with the language that evoked hidden signs of racial superiority and the assumption that all readers were white. Over the years, Row has thought about the segregated backdrops in literature and subsequently, he has sought ways to encourage and or generate reparations in a field that has a limited following—white readers. Lastly, with a little over 300 pages, White Flights is a masterful manuscript that should be read by readers regardless of race or ethnicity. White Flights may be obtained through various on-line sources. Peace until the next time………..Stay well!
