Declarations of Faith According to Psalm 91 Greetings! We are still in the midst of a pandemic. How are you holding up? I know for some it has been a challenge having to stay at home and even having to wear masks and gloves when having to go out. How we go through tough times is based on our perspective. With that being said, let me give you the perspective that although things are not the way we would want them to be at the moment, we are still around to experience the moment. Let's stay encouraged and connected as we go through these turbulent times. PSALM 91: I DECLARE I will dwell in the shelter of the Most High God. I DECLARE I will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I DECLARE that God is my Refuge and my Fortress. I DECLARE that you are my God (Hallelujah) in whom I trust and with great confidence and whom I will rely. I DECLARE that God will rescue me from every trap and protect me from every disease. I DECLARE I am covered and protected by His outstretched arms. I DECLARE that God's faithful promises are my armor and my protection. I DECLARE I will not be afraid of the terrors of the night nor of the arrows that fly in the day. I DECLARE I will not dread any disease that stalks in the darkness nor any disaster that strikes at midday. I DECLARE that because God is my Refuge and the Almighty the God of my home no evil can befall me and no plague can come near my dwelling. I DECLARE that God has ordered His angels to guard, defend and protect me and my house. I DECLARE that God's armies of Heaven will keep me from falling. I will walk unharmed and kick anything that's evil from my path. I DECLARE that because of God's love for me, I'll call on Him. He'll set me above all my troubles. He will deliver me from all my fears and He will honor me with His presence and power. I DECLARE He will reward me with long life and He will show me His Salvation. **The above declarations are an excerpt of the message, 'Confessions and Bringing Order to Your Life', from Dr. Creflo Dollar, Jr., Founder and Senior Pastor of World Changers Church International (WCCI) in College Park, Georgia** N.A.I. SWATFITCOACHING Strength - Wellness - Athletic - Training
My Story What motivated me to start a personal training business was being out of shape and feeling bad about my body. I had been an athlete between the ages of 12 and 18 years old, playing football and running track. I had never had a weight problem and could eat whatever I wanted without gaining weight. However, when I stopped playing sports, became sedentary, and did not change my eating habits, the weight packed on quickly. After twelve years of a sedentary lifestyle, I had gained fat around my middle section and had stopped taking care of myself mentally. One day, right before New Year’s Day of 2007, I step out of the shower and looked in the mirror, I did not like the reflection in the mirror. I felt bad about myself. I decided to get back in shape and take care of myself again. I thought other people must have felt the same way as I did and wanted to help them feel better too. N.A.I. MAGAZINE - PAGE 14
So, I became a personal trainer to help others get into shape and become healthy. Helping others to reach their fitness goals is what motivates me. My clients include stay-at-home moms, high school athletes, and business professionals who desire to get maximum results in a minimum amount time. I believe you have every reason to accomplish your goals! Clients may be having a bad day when they arrive at their session; but when they leave their session with me, they feel energized and ready to take on the day.
"The bottom line is the results."
I make every client's session all about them. My goal is to get that person to a better place mentally and physically! The three words that have been instrumental in the success of my business are: Desire, because in a service business, you must have a passion to be a helping hand for others; Dedication, as you must be committed to the grinding day in and day out for your clients/customers and; Determination since you will fail more times than you triumph, and you must stay the course and never give up. The catalyst to build a business as a personal trainer came from following Bedros Keuilian, one of the top fitness gurus in the United States and my favorite entrepreneurial coach. Mr. Keuilian inspired me to believe in myself, grow, and continue my fitness business. I started my business in 2008. After listening to and implementing the tips from his business CD, I was able to grow my business from two clients to 20 clients in a few months. In the next five years, I want to expand my clientele beyond the United States and to be able to help people worldwide to achieve their fitness goals. TIP: When deciding on working with a personal trainer a person needs to assess if the Personal Trainer can accommodate their physical challenges, be flexible with their fitness levels, and dedicated to the client’s goals. Biography: Larry Lee is a certified personal trainer (NFPT) with expertise in Holistic health and nutrition: IIN, Weight training and cardiovascular/aerobics, Fitness ball and Bosu ball (core training), Kettlebell training (fast fat loss, core strength, and conditioning), Athletics (sports training), AIS and PNF stretching. He has helped people to have more energy, look better, move better, and have more confidence. He has been a Gold's Gym Coach since 2008. The bottom line is the results. Your body will be turned into a fat-burning and musclebuilding machine, and results are assured. You will benefit from having the body of your dreams. N.A.I. MAGAZINE - PAGE 15

THREE EXHIBITIONS BY ARTISTS WITH ORIGINS AT HOWARD UNIVERSITY
CULTURALLY SPEAKING
HURRY IF YOU WANT TO SEE ALL THREE N.A.I. MAGAZINE - PAGE 17
The critically acclaimed exhibition, Everything is Beautiful, consists of paintings and other works by Alma W. Thomas (1891-1878) who was the first graduate of the art department of Howard University. Thomas was born in semi-rural Georgia and migrated to Washington, with her sister (who became a librarian) to seek educational and career opportunities. Thomas devoted much of her life to her students at Shaw Junior High School in the Northwest section of Washington, D.C. However, when she retired, her goals changed, and she decided to become a serious artist. At first, she joined a number of her fellow art teachers and studied with Lois Mailou Jones, an accomplished artist, and a professor at Howard University---in the latter’s home studio. Later Thomas was motivated to enroll in courses at the American University, where she came under the tutelage of the Washington Color School artist Jacob Kainen (1909-2001). A painter, printmaker, curator, scholar, teacher, and art collector, Kainen helped Thomas to launch her career and in 1972 she became the first African American woman artist to have a oneperson exhibition at a major art museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Everything Is Beautiful SPECIAL EXHIBITION OCTOBER 30, 2021JANUARY 23, 2022 When Thomas first started her advanced work at American University, she was a figurative painter. Under the influence of the popular modernist art movements at the time, abstract expressionism, and large color field abstraction, she became a non-figurative artist. Today her work is characterized by its brilliant and up lifting color selections. Everything is Beautiful, the exhibition at the Phillips, demonstrates the full range of her work.

Also, on view, at the Phillips Collection, through January 9, 2022, is the comprehensive exhibition of works by the renowned scholar and curator David Driskell (1931-2020). David Driskell: Icons of Nature and History is a must see. This exhibition demonstrates the artist’s superior capabilities in a wide range of skills that he perfected in his studio practice while building and nurturing the field of African American Art history. A giant in the art world, Driskell transformed through his scholarship, innovation and teaching the custom and practice by which art historians contemplated and deliberated American Art. He played a significant role in bringing awareness to the art of African American artists at a time when these artists were disregarded or considered insignificant. His work made it clear that African American art is essential to the American art canon. The art world and the broader American

culture is indebted to Professor Driskell who dedicated his life to art and most notably to the cause of African American art history and culture. David Driskell received his BFA from Howard University in 1955 and his MFA from the Catholic University of America in 1962 and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. His groundbreaking curatorial effort, “Two Centuries of Black American Art: 1750-1950,” has been a foundation for the field since 1976. The exhibition was a major presence of excellence in art and art history during the American Bicentennial. For those who knew his work, David Driskell has long been recognized for his vibrant and versatile artistic practice rooted in his reverence of the beauty and spirituality of the American landscape and his profound connection to the African diaspora. Featuring over 50 works, David Driskell: Icons of Nature and History offers the first comprehensive examination of the paintings, collages, prints, and drawings of the celebrated American artist, art historian, and educator. His legacy in the history of American art is unparalleled: through his curatorial work, writing, and teaching, he demonstrated that the art of Black N.A.I. MAGAZINE - PAGE 19
people is essential to the story of American art. Through works spanning six decades, David Driskell: Icons of Nature and History, establishes the evolution of his use of collage as a painterly medium, his innovative figurative abstraction, and his signature incorporation of African forms. Driskell’s command of colour and line and attentiveness to “the symbolic presence of form” is seen generously throughout his work. The work also highlights Driskell’s involvement with Black Christianity, nature, and varying degrees of painterly abstraction. Although his earliest passion was painting, Driskell devoted most of his professional life to teaching artists and art historians. Moreover, he mentored emerging artists, including young faculty members at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s). Moreover, he was one who readily gave advice to aspiring art historians who desired to document the plights of African American artists. Lastly, he befriended many artists of colour who chose to live abroad as expatriates. The Driskell’s readily spent their monies and vacation time visiting those artists who lived abroad, and they often stayed in their faraway homes where they shared many meals and memories with those transplants who desired to hear news of the evolving American scene. N.A.I. MAGAZINE - PAGE 20
Yes, David Driskell is one for the ages and his studio work should be better known now that this comprehensive and thought-provoking exhibition offers an opportunity to see and appreciate the many talents of David C. Driskell. DAVID DRISKEL ICONS OF NATURE AND HISTORY SPECIAL EXHIBITION: OCTOBER 16, 2021-JANUARY 9, 2022
Arthur Jafa and TD Jakes What does the artist Arthur Jafa have in common with T.D. Jakes, the world-renowned preacher? One thing- Jafa has created a large-scale video presentation which includes excerpts from the annuals of the younger Jakes preaching to a large group of mainly African American men in an arena. Perhaps this one of the early Man-power conferences. This presentation features other Christian notables including Al Green and E.V. Hill and lasts almost 2 hours. It is designed to run about the same time as most African American church services. There were other works in the large gallery that contained very little furniture for the musing visitors, but the art objects were an assortment of media representing African American historical and cultural life at various times in history.
Jafa, who was brought up Catholic in the segregated, Clarksdale, Mississippi to parents who were educators, studied architecture and film at Howard University. An artist, filmmaker, and cinematographer, Jafa’s practice for more than thirty years questions the universal and the specific expressions of being black as he investigates how visual media can transmit the notions and “asks a recurring question: how can visual media communicate the power and beauty and strength of character of the African American culture.” Jafa’s practice includes film, photography, and installation work. He often uses original and found film footage in order to fully explore the possibilities of the medium. He is known for having worked on such notable films as. Daughters of the Dust (with the director Julie Dash and focused on life and the Gullah culture of the sea islands off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia), Crooklyn (with Spike Lee), and Eyes Wide Shut (with Stanley Kubrick). Moreover, he is known for his own 2016 work; Love is a Message. This film had international exposure. In 2019, Jafa was awarded the Golden Lion Award at the 58th Venice Biennale for his film: The White Album. This exhibition at Glenstone is the first solo museum presentation of his work in the Washington, D.C, area and it will be on view for some time but make every effort to get there as soon as possible because you will need to make a reservation for admittance.
Terri B. Glenstone, a museum of modern and contemporary art, is integrated into nearly 300 acres of gently rolling pasture and unspoiled woodland in Montgomery County, Maryland, less than 15 miles from the heart of Washington, DC. Established by the not-for-profit Glenstone Foundation, the museum opened in 2006 and provides a contemplative, intimate setting for experiencing iconic works of art and architecture within a natural environment.
