SUMMER 2016 NEWSLETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello members! A lot has happened since the last newsletter. March brought members the opportunity to visit I3 Detroit, a maker space in Ferndale, where participants had the chance to learn about and try their hand at laser cutting. April was a busy month for us also, starting with the long anticipated Michael Good Anticlastic Workshop held at Wayne State University. I think it's safe to say that it was enjoyed by all, including Michael who requested a return engagement. He was impressed by the Guild, by Wayne State, and the City of Detroit, and is looking forward to coming back for another workshop in early 2018. Many thanks to all who made his visit such a great success and fun time. April also brought our annual holiday party graciously hosted by Paul and Brenda Mergen at their home. As always with the Mergens, every moment was a learning opportunity, and members were treated to the chance to try their hands at the traditional crafts of rope and twine making as well as enjoying Paul's forging demonstrations. Many thanks to Paul and Brenda and for everyone who made it such a successful event. July will bring the annual MSG booths at the South University Ann Arbor Art Fair. Longtime members Charlotte Allen and Gretchen Otto have generously volunteered to coordinate the booths and really dug in to bring an awesome experience to everyone involved. In keeping with previous years, we will once again have a juried selection of 10 member artists selling their work, plus a range of member led demos over all four fair days, including the extraordinary College for Creative Studies Blacksmiths. The fair runs Thursday July 21 to Sunday July 24. Stop in and show your support or better yet consider joining in the fun. There are still opportunities to volunteer or demonstrate. And don't forget to visit the other MSG members who have their own booths too. (Editor Note: listed in the newsletter, so read the whole thing) September is shaping up to be a very full month, starting with our Jewelry and Objects Show opening on September 9 at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. Our J&O juror Billie Thiede will also be leading a two-‐ day workshop for us exploring alternative materials on the 9th and 10th at Eastern Michigan University. And we will end the weekend at Eastern with the MSG Annual Meeting on September 11. It's always a good time. Make an MSG weekend of it! There is much more in the discussion and planning stages, including a pewter workshop that is being finalized and an October workshop with enamelist Anne Havel. So check your email, snail mail, and the MSG website and Facebook pages for updates on these and future events as they develop. As always, if you have any ideas, comments, questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at mckernahan@yahoo.com. Sincerely, Mary Kernahan, MSG President

Workshop Was So Good – Michael Good! By Bonnie Anderson On April 13-‐15 the Michigan Silversmith’s Guild (MSG) offered a workshop with Michael Good, anticlastic raising designer and metalsmith. The workshop was at maximum capacity with 12 participants. There were 8 hopeful students on the waiting list, one from as far away and California. Mary Kernahan, President of MSG, who has studied with Michael at his studio in Maine, served as his workshop assistant and coordinator. In addition to excellence in technique and creative design of fine jewelry, Michael is a superb instructor. Michael provided procedural demonstrations for a basic anticlastic form bracelet, single loop anticlastic earring, a double helix form and a hyperbolic paraboloid. Each of the three mornings began with a demonstration of the selected anticlastic form. Michael provided personal advice to each student as the technique was practiced and learned. The technique was demonstrated again during the course of the day with questions that came up for students during practice. Workshop student Allison Colby had this to say, “This class was laid out really well and just the right amount of material was covered. Going in I had only about 6 months of raising experience and I learned so much from Michael. Because of Michael’s teaching style, I don’t think you needed raising experience at all to benefit from the class. It was great.” Michael generously donated a set of his tools to the Wayne State metals department. There is an excellent explanation of anticlastic raising on Michael Good’s website. STUDIO FOR SALE‌Well, it has been over a year to finally get this together. Here I am at the end of a career of over 30 years smithing and teaching and it was sad to photograph everything. I have a great studio full of well-loved tools. I am including my contact info for anyone wanting to talk to me about what they are interested in. Diane Hubert 9791 Avondale Ln. Traverse City, MI 49684 231-313-0734 (C) I am open for a studio visit if some members want to make a road trip. I do come downstate occasionally to visit an aunt and could certainly bring smaller items down with me. The anvil would have to be a pick-up. It is a 75 lb signed Peter Wright. The treated stump can go with it. The vise is 4.6 in and opens 10-12 inches. The treated stump can go with it. I have a few more stakes that I forgot to photograph. They are in pretty good shape. The stand can go too.

Betsy Lehndorff Offers Two Pearl Carving Workshops this Summer MSG member Betsy Lehndorff will teach the innovative art of carving freshwater pearls that jewelers can do at the bench. The secret to this skill is the use of dental grade diamond drill bits and burrs that carve soft stone easily. Studio JSD held the first in June. Ask for another session to be added. Students will complete three projects, including carving and polishing, and go home with tools and a carved pearl on a sterling silver beaded chain. The Ann Arbor Art Center class is Saturday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include detailed projects plus a lunchtime talk on advances in pearls and pearl carving. To sign up, go to http://www.annarborartcenter.org/portfolio-view/pearlcarving/ The classes are the result of a step-by-step article Lehndorff wrote for the April issue of Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist. She will also be teaching in Colorado and is looking for other opportunities to work with students and teachers. Students should bring a magnification visor or safety glasses, and will be provided with everything else they need.
