Rudolf Hostettler and Jan Tschichold’s The Printer’s Terms lists 1,361 common printer’s phrases as a dictionary/ glossary meant for everyday use in a typographic workshop. Words are displayed in five languages: English, German, French, Italian and Dutch.
The concept of the booklet focuses on the em quad: the block of square metal that a cast letter would sit on in letterpress. Throughout the booklet the em quad evolves and combines with rules to create patterns that equally reflect the changes in text positions. The poster is hand screen printed with metallic gold and black ink.
THE PRINTER’S TERMS
In order to celebrate this book, I created a 5 spread booklet that uses 23 phrases to explore how added variables (different type families/sizes, colors and shapes) could be handled in a thoughtful manner.
THE PRINTER’S TERMS
“The font height is in itself such a significant unit of length for a typesetter, that it has been used to define a universal unit of relative length by the name of one em.”

In addition to the glossary was a cross-referenceable component of the book, which displayed the terms in five languages: English, French, Italian, Dutch and German. This feature was meant to bridge communication gaps between different printers in European countries.

The Canzani Gallery of Contemporary Art exhibits international, national and local artists in the same space. The gallery provides perspective and variety to the Columbus community in order to create new conversations.
CAN ZANI GALLERY
During this branding it was vital to find a balance between representing the space while not overshadowing the work being exhibited. Therefore, I created a brand around structure. The gallery is housed inside the Columbus College of Art & Design’s Canzani Center and lacks any sort of identity outside the college’s. The building has numerous walls of gridded glass that reaches three stories high, and inspired the compartmentalized sequencing to the posters and exhibition catalog.

While “painting as object” has often been a formalist issue, the works in this exhibition gather their identity through the subversion of formalism—scrambling and reassembling themselves in an aesthetic shell game where the act of painting is always an investigation of a painting’s ability to push into objecthood. The result is a collection of works that are each alive in a way that only a painting can be, as well as present in a way that seems more like an object. Impossible to label as one specific medium (“a painting” or “a sculpture”), they are, rather, an often-lumpy but always compelling combination of the two.
Participating artists will include Richard Aldrich, Claire Ashley, Leslie Baum, Anna Betbeze, Sarah Braman, Tom Burr, Tom Burckhardt, Kathy Butterly, Sarah Cain, N. Dash, Cheryl Donegan, Michel François, Joe Fyfe, Katharina Grosse, Mary Heilmann, Chris Johanson, Ross Knight, Jim Lambie, Jim Lee, Chris Martin, Sam Martineau, Matt Rich, Cordy Ryman, Nancy Shaver, Daniel Turner, Amy Yoes, and Tamara Zahaykevich.

DOYALD YOUNG : LASTING MARKS
Intended to accompany Doyald Young’s box set of published typography books, this booklet pays homage to the great American typographer through exploring the progression of handwriting and script that influenced Young’s work. Due to Young’s passing in 2011, I created a white cover with a blind embossed “D” in one of the typefaces he made. The dust jacket also folds out to show a commemorative poster. And in order to appreciate Young’s work, I constructed a concertina that makes it able to view Young’s type on a single page.

L’eggs has been an industry leader in women’s legwear for decades with their support of strong, bold women. With the bright pops of color and accents of pink foil throughout this rebrand, L’eggs speaks to those who don’t believe in hiding who they are and never apologize for showing a little leg. The packaging is color coated for the different legwear collections and the implementation of a cylinder shape gives the consumer a place to conveniently store their tights after purchase. The design references back to one of the huge reasons women loved L’eggs: the ability to use the vintage egg packaging as storage. The new logo is streamlined while still creating the motion and curves of a women’s legs in the symbol.

L’oven Fresh is a current brand at Aldi’s that provides customers with a variety of baked goods, including sandwich bread, specialty breads and desert bakery. So what’s the problem? Although the products that L’oven provides Aldi with are of good quality, the brand itself lacks any successful marketing approach that promotes the baked goods in a cohesive and memorable way to new customers. By creating an updated logo and packaging that exhibits a fun, energetic voice to capture the attention of children and adults I focused on making bread relevant and fresh.

The cover is made of two elements: a vellum skeleton of the quote and the actual inked quote underneath on paper. I based the skeleton directly on the steps and marks I made to reach the final quote bellow. The exposed binding was done by hand to further illustrate the idea of working with your hands to create beauty.
EDWARD JOHNSTON SKETCHBOOK
“This then is the scribe’s direct purpose: the making of useful things legibly beautiful,” is a quote by Edward Johnston and the centerpiece for the sketchbook I handlettered. Edward Johnston is recognized as the person who revived hand lettering, more specifically, calligraphy. The Edward Johnston Foundation in Ditchling, Sussex not only commemorates Johnston’s life and work, it is also dedicated to continuing education in calligraphy and allied subjects. Offering courses on site, I chose to create a sketchbook that could easily be used in such classes.

world can be ascribed to his re-discovery of the influence of tools, materials and methods. His researches were carried out with the understanding of the artistcraftsman, the scientist and the philosopher and this three-fold approach resulted in a profound insight - he fully grasped the root of formal writing and saw how all the branches grew from that root. The epoch-making sans-serif alphabet he designed for the London Underground Railways changed the face of typography most popular types of our day ‘Perpetua’ and ‘Gill Sans’ were by his great pupil Eric Gill (1882-1940).
