No Shelter Here... Maybe By Rebecca Ellis Plans for a temporary homeless shelter landed on Beach 116th Street’s doorstep, once again, before promptly being called off. Over the weekend, The Wave learned from multiple sources that the city had proposed placing 100 homeless adults into a temporary shelter in the business district as early as Tuesday. Word of the proposed location, at 158 Beach 116th St., spread across the commercial corridor, causing residents and business owners to voice concerns that their property may once again be deployed as the city’s “dumping ground.” Fueled by complaints, Borough President Melinda Katz and City Councilman Eric Ulrich both reached out to the Department of Homeless Services, inquiring if any housing was being plotted for the strip.

Both officials have since been informed there is “no planned DHS shelter at this site or in the immediate vicinity.” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s deputy press secretary, Aja WorthyDavis, also denied the rumors, telling The Wave the proposal for the area has “never been for a homeless shelter.” Still, residents are on-edge, worried the city’s need for housing will override their desire for a bustling business district. In a Facebook post, Councilman Ulrich said he has been “inundated with texts and messages” from concerned constituents, who want to ensure that the “word on the street” does not result in an actual shelter on the street. Denise Diehm, owner of beach boutique, The Gift is Love, spoke strongly continued on page 16

Councilman Eric Ulrich announced the City Council approved legislation renaming the northwest corner of Seaside Avenue and Beach Channel Drive "Midshipman Justin Zemser Way." The Class of 2013 valedictorian at Channel View School for Research, Zemser was in his second year at the United States Naval Academy when he tragically died in the 2015 Amtrak crash while returning to Rockaway for a weekend. While in high school, Zemser served in student government and was named captain of the varsity football team. He also interned for Councilman Eric Ulrich and volunteered at a local soup kitchen. After he was accepted to the United States Naval Academy, Zemser remained active in the Rockaway community by visiting his former school to give inspirational speeches to high school youths. "Midshipman Justin Zemser embodied the very best our nation has to offer. He was a born leader, a gifted student, and a tireless servant," said Councilman Eric Ulrich. "We can all learn from the example he set every day and from his commitment to both country and community. I'm thankful to my colleagues in the city council for passing this legislation, and I'm looking forward to putting up the new street sign, so we can continue to honor Midshipman Justin Zemser's life." "We thank Council Member Ulrich

and his staff for getting this done and fighting to honor Justin," said Howard Zemser, Justin's father. "We're looking forward to putting up the new sign and inviting the community to join us." "Justin Zemser was and will always be a member of the Naval Academy family," said U.S. Naval Academy Public Affairs Officer Cdr. John Schofield. "Any effort to keep his memory alive is certainly an appropriate way to remember who he was and the excellence he embodied as a U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman." "Channel View School for Research is extremely proud and honored that the New York City Council has passed legislation approving the creation of 'Midshipman Justin Zemser Way,' and Channel View's students, parents, and staff wholeheartedly thank Councilman Eric Ulrich for sponsoring this legislation," said Joseph Featherston, Assistant Principal of Channel View School for Research. "He returned often, in his midshipman's uniform, to deliver motivational speeches to the students. In addition, Justin was active in the Rockaway community, especially as a volunteer with St. Camillus Special Olympics. The signpost bearing his name will be a constant reminder to Channel View's students that they should live their lives following the 'Zemser Way,' patriotism, service, academic success, honesty, friendship, and leadership."

When it comes to the city and its priorities, it’s easy to see why several Rockaway residents feel like they drew the short-straw. In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, the de Blasio administration made promise after promise to improve conditions in Rockaway, and residents are starting to grow impatient. For some folks, dealing with the city's Build It Back program has been a nightmarish experience. RBCA President John Cori, who had previously been an applicant to the program, said he withdrew from Build It Back, after the agency told him to raise his home, and then lower it back to its original height. “You can’t make this up,” Cori said at a recent press conference. “There are stories like this everywhere. It’s insanity.” However, for the 6,906 residents who are now back in their homes, the program has been a success. The issues with Build It Back are just the tip of the "false promise" iceberg. As first reported by The Wave in April, the reconstruction of Rockaway's boardwalk, which was originally expected to be completed by Memorial Day 2016, was pushed back to July, citing safety regulations as the cause for the delay. And for all those who have been advocating for restored ferry service to Rockaway... Well, they will just have to keep waiting until the citywide ferry service is up-and-running in 2017. In response to recent rumors, that the city plans on placing 100 homeless adults in a temporary location on Beach 116th Street, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and City Councilman Eric Ulrich reached out to the Department of Homeless Services, which reassured them that there are no plans for a homeless shelter in Rockaway. But residents remain skeptical of the city’s false promises, considering the fact that DHS lied about placing a homeless shelter at the former Daytop Village rehab center on Beach 65th Street in 2014. For now, people in Rockaway will just have to wait and see, whether Mayor de Blasio makes good on his promises or if it is just bad business as usual.

Congress Recess Is Good News Dear Editor: Congress adjourning and leaving Washington for a recess of seven weeks is actually great news. Our civil and economic liberties are continually at risk when any legislative body -- be it the New York City

Council, New York State Legislature or Congress is in session. Elected officials on a bipartisan basis routinely pass legislation to increase spending, taxes, borrowing and deficits. They also pass bills benefiting their "Pay for Play" contributors, funding pork barrel member items along with new rules and regulations infringing on our day to day lives. When Congress is not working, they can't cause mischief and grief for the rest of us. I wish they would stay home even longer! LARRY PENNER

The “Talk” About Homeless Shelter In Rockaway Park Dear Editor: There is talk around town about a homeless shelter, which will house

100 people, located on Beach 116th Street. When will enough be enough for our community? Once again the Rockaway Park Hotel is on the map for this idea. Just some information for all, an audit released by our City Comptroller Scott Stringer, in late December 2015, found that 53 percent of sampled shelter units had evidence of rodents, roaches, or other vermin, while 87 percent had broken smoke detectors, blocked fire escapes, mold, mildew and peeling paint. So I say to the business owners continued on page 41

Artist Anthony Dooley showcases his discoveries.

By Elizabeth Holzer Anthony Dooley’s eclectic exhibit, “Life Below the Surface,” was forged in the remote Panamanian wilderness. “This all came from the downtime at the camp and not having much to do,” Dooley said. “A lot of people make jaws but I just got really into it and started mounting them.” In addition to his art, Dooley runs Spearfishing Panama which lands him on the isolated Montuosa Island every spring. Located 60 miles off the coast of Panama, Montuosa Island is an ideal spot for trophy fishing—in particular, the Yellowfin Tuna, which can typically weigh more than 400 pounds. Jaw bones of Yellowfin and other preserved fragments of Central American sea creatures line the Rockaway Beach Surf Club and it was literally selling off the wall, as patrons offered Dooley cash for the trophy fish. “I sold three pieces last night before the show even started,” Dooley said. “I was so pumped.” The name “Life Below the Surface” is an umbrella tagline that encompasses all of Dooley’s enterprises. He started as a surf photographer but expanded into other areas including video and screen printing. “I’ve been shooting photos ever since college,” he said. “I went to school for photography. I did a lot of surfing stuff but never made any money doing it. I don’t think that anybody makes money shooting surfing.” All of the photography on display was also shot by Dooley while he was free diving. “I just put all my energy into div-

ing,” Dooley said, recalling how he found his niche. “I still don’t make any money doing it, but it’s more fun.” The large format photos were coated in epoxy, to add to the underwater feel of the exhibit. “Jimmy Dowd set up the show,” Dooley said. “He is one of my best friends, he taught me how to silkscreen. I’ve been coming to visit him here for forever.” According to Dooley, the pictures of old nails and portholes were shot from a shipwreck near his other home in Rincon, Puerto Rico, where he owns and operates a brick and mortar business specializing in oceanic inspired silk screen prints. The Uncharted Studio swaps the heavy chemical solvents for citrus and water based inks when printing their eco-minded cotton tees. All of the materials were shipped from Puerto Rico, piece by piece, and assembled here. Although he lives more than 1,500 miles away, Dooley said he has always had an intimate relationship with the Rockaways. “I’m just really close with the Rockaway community even though I don’t live here,” Dooley said. “There are a lot of places, where you go there, and if you’re not from there, you’re not welcome. People are just super genuine and nice here. I love coming here for that reason.” The mixed-media show, “Life Below the Surface,” opened on July 8 and will be on display at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, Beach 87th Street and the Rockaway Freeway, through July 20th. THE WAVE, ROCKAWAY BEACH, NY, FRIDAY, JULY 22, 2016 - Page 10

It’s My Turn By Alexander Karinsky What dismay I had reading Elizabeth Holzer’s article about myself and the Rockaway Beach Surfer’s Association. So many items she mentions are just categorically wrong and then there are some completely misleading points she refers to that painted us as a hostile group of people. It couldn’t be further than the truth. If she paid attention, I brought up that I was considering stepping aside and wanted to know what the other board members felt. They all agreed to continue as is. Clearly Ms. Holzer must have relapsed into Pokémon Go for a moment to not accurately record any of this. While the RBSA has an amicable and positive dialogue with the Parks Department, for her to inaccurately quote that we wanted to create a “kindergarten” style educational program for PEP Officers, suggests a negative and condescending tone which cannot be further than the truth. In the future, if The Wave wishes to continue reporting on the RBSA meetings, please send someone who will listen the whole way through the meeting and report on it in an honest and professional manner, rather than trying to be controversial for a pretty low key, but yet positive meeting in the first place.

101st Fosters Community Relations munity outreach, instating a successful N.C.O. program, which Outlaw praised as doing a “phenomenal” job to ease relations between the NYPD and its constituents. Most crucial to healthy relations, though, as Captain Lenz points out, is the fact that officers “haven’t shot anyone.” Now, the officers and community are focused on how to keep it that way. The N.C.O. program is a good start, Outlaw said, forcing the officers to interact with the men and women they are safeguarding without the threat of arrest. But, she said, “what’s missing out of the N.C.O. program is the community… and making sure those that live in those communities are actually part of those conversations.”To try and further saturate officers within their precinct, Outlaw said, she’d been looking at the People’s Police Academy, which began in the Bronx this past March. The initiative, similar to the N.C.O. program, encourages police to learn more about their precinct than its hot spots for crime. Instead, the program acts as a crash course in cultural immersion, teaching the officers about the neighborhood’s ethnicities, culture, history, and even providing a bus tour of the area. Though Outlaw gave no timeline, she said she hopes to get a similar program rooted in the 101st precinct, a proactive approach to warding off the violence being witnessed across the country. After all, she says, “just because we’re in the Rockaways and it hasn’t happened yet, doesn’t mean it can’t.”

By Rebecca Ellis In light of the tragic shootings in Kansas City, Baton Rouge and Dallas—which has caused uproar all across America—the 101st NYPD Precinct Community Council, met on Wednesday, to brainstorm on a solution to the complex question: What can a community do to ease a problem that is plaguing the nation? Although the Rockaway community has yet to be hit with the type of anti-authoritarian violence that has occurred in cities such as Baton Rouge and Dallas, attendees acknowledged that the peninsula was far from immune. “The issues going on in the news could easily happen in our community,” said Jazmine Outlaw, president of the 101st Precinct Community Council. “I have family members that are police officers, and Alton Sterling could have been one of my cousins.” As America’s police-community relations continue to collapse, things seem to be on the upswing for the small pocket of Far Rockaway. The area is experiencing a “historic low of violence,”according to Commanding Officer Capt. Justin Lenz — down 40 percent in shootings, with 48 guns taken off the street this year. “101st Precinct used to be terrible years ago,” an attendee said, noting officers’ poor treatment of women, children and residents of color. Still, she says, she’s impressed with the way the precinct has built its reputation back up over the past decade. The captain attributed these improvements to a policy overhaul, which prioritized big picture crime over excessive summons and “locking up 20 kids for smoking weed.” The officers have also turned their attention towards com-

Free State Of Jones – Southern Spartacus By Robert M. Snyder Imagine a rebellion against a rebellion. It actually happened during the Civil War. A Confederate deserter, Newton Knight, formed his own army of other deserters and escaped slaves to fight the rebel authorities. As Knight in Free State of Jones, Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey has found a part that fits as well as a perfectly tailored Confederate uniform. Except, that uniform chafes Knight to the point it’s soon cast off, along with his allegiance for the Confederate States of America. Hiding in a Mississippi swamp, Knight finds he is joined by others displaced as he is. His ragtag group grows. By virtue of his innate nobility, humanity and resourcefulness, he becomes their leader. Realizing the Confederacy is appropriating goods and necessities from local farms, Knight and his cohorts take action. Like Robin Hood, he defends the poor; like Spartacus, he frees the slaves from the wealthy plantations. Safe in the swamp where the Southern Cavalry can’t come and Infantry fears to, Knight expands his territorial hold, eventually controlling more than his own Jones County. Written and directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit”), Free State of Jones moves to an epic scale, when he introduces a near contemporary angle. The story jumps 90 years to the trial of a Knight descendent who, by marrying a white woman, is violating an asinine Mississippi law against interracial marriage (Newton Knight cohabited with two women -- one white, one black). Free State of Jones is an important film, particularly now, when racial tension seems in great need of a calming voice. See “Jones” and hear what Newton Knight has to say.

But all that work is a sign of our investment creating the most reliable electric system possible right here on Long Island. So not only will we respond to downed power lines faster, we’ll be able to prevent many outages before they occur. The cones will soon be gone—the improvements will be here for years to come.

Build It Bunk

By Daniel Offner Councilman Eric Ulrich has been fielding complaints about the Build It Back program since its inception, but over the last several months, those complaints have intensified to the point where Ulrich is now looking for Mayor de Blasio and the Build It Back program to take full accountability. “I want to be the first elected official - I will be the only one - to call on Mayor [Bill] de Blasio to fire Amy Peterson and for her to resign as the director of Build It Back,” Ulrich said. “Amy Peterson has very good intentions. I am sure she gives 100 percent to her job, but she is simply in over her head, she is not able to effectively turn around the program, and if you want to see change, change has to happen at the top.” It has been nearly four years since Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc in the Rockaways. However, several homeowners, who are waiting for the city’s Build It Back program to help, say it has not done enough to get residents back in their homes. On July 18, Ulrich joined Rockaway Park resident Ellen Nichtern, outside of her mother’s house on Beach 117th Street, to call on Build It Back to finish the project. “The only thing she wants to do is get home,” Nichtern said. “She’s lived in this house since 1968 and she just wants to get home.” According to a spokesperson from the Mayor’s office, of the 8,728 total applicants, 6,906 have already been served, for a rate of 80 percent all across the five boroughs. “When Mayor de Blasio took office and appointed Amy Peterson to run the program, not one homeowner had received a check or seen construc-

tion,” Raul Contreras, a Mayor’s office spokesperson, said in an email, following the press conference. “That is why this administration immediately overhauled the program and took over direct management—resulting in 80 percent of homeowners served to date. Further, $120 million in reimbursement checks have been issued to residents. We are continuing to elevate and rebuild homes across the City to complete the program—as the Mayor committed—by the end of this year.” Councilman Donovan Richards, a de Blasio ally and someone who has worked with Peterson on a number of “key-turning” ceremonies in his district, supported Build It Back on social media shortly after The Wave posted video of Ulrich demanding Peterson be removed from her position. “Amy Peterson has not only been responsive, but ensured progress [in] my district with @NYCBuilditBack. Need I say more?” Ulrich called BIB’s key turnover photo ops “disgraceful,” and says the program has not delivered on a myriad of promises. “Ms. Nichtern and her mother have been out of their home for the past five months, during which time Build it Back has not done any work on their home, nor has Build it Back remained in contact with Ms. Nichtern to even let her know the status of the project,” Ulrich said. He called Build it Back’s treatment of Ms. Nichtern and the many people in the same situation “entirely unacceptable.” “Like so many of my constituents affected by Superstorm Sandy, Ellen Nichtern has been let down by the bureaucrats at Build it Back,” Ulrich concluded. “This program is a complete disaster. Everyone knows it.” Photos By Daniel Offner

Fun Run Honors Dawn McIntyre By Patricia Hannan Hundreds gathered outside the Broad Channel Athletic Club headquarters, on July 15, to compete in Dawn’s Fun Run—the first of three races in the Rockaway Triple Crown Summer Series—dedicated to Dawn McIntyre, former president of the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department and co-founder of the Jamaica Bay Little League. “This is, absolutely, what Dawn would’ve wanted, everybody coming together and having fun,” Donna Bassetti affirmed. Surrounded by family, friends, and members of the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department, there was perhaps no one better qualified to have shared that sentiment than Bassetti, as both cousin of the late Dawn (Werther) McIntyre and treasurer of the BCVFD. “There are family ties all over here,” Bassetti told The Wave, in Dawn’s honor. Kids have some fun in the sun at Dawn’s Fun Run. Assemblyman Goldfeder traded in his usual Team “That’s Kristen and Katie, Dawn’s two Goldfeder t-shirt to run in Dawn McIntyre’s honor. daughters,” Bassetti pointed out as the sisters helped in preparation for the event. “Everyone here lives in Broad Channel,” she continued. “Lacey, 11 years old, and Macenzie, 8 years old, are also relatives of the McIntyre family and are going to be running in the race.” “No, I don’t expect to come in first place,” Macenzie confidently shared. Family ties continued, as Bassetti acknowledged Dawn’s husband, Danny McIntyre, Chief of BCVFD, serving his 11th career tour as department chief. DJ Mitley, a retired former chief of BCVFD now “does this on the side,” according to Bassetti. Guy Long, she added, is also a Broad Channel resident who donated his time to give an acoustic performance to open the event. Tasha Turner, a Far Rockaway resident, had always wanted to be a firefighter. One day, while working at Nathan’s, she accidentally met one of BCVFD’s own and was informally recruited through their networking. “From what I heard, Dawn was literally always here at BCVFD,” Turner said. “She was everywhere.” Ginger O’Hare, Dawn’s sister-in-law, estimates that Dawn was involved in Broad Channel fundraisers for A small group of children all ran one lap around the BCAC field in honor of Dawn McIntyre. 30 years, as early as 1985. Approximately 40 runners had registered prior to Dawn’s Fun Run, according to O’Hare, but as the evening went on, the barbeque and partying drew at least 100 joyous children and adults. Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder traded in his usual Team Goldfeder T-shirt for the evening, to throw on one of the tees that were on sale for charity, and ran in honor of his “great friend.” This past spring, Goldfeder toasted to Dawn and presented a “New York State Proclamation recognizing the contributions of McIntyre to the BCVFD, the BCAC, and to the tight-knit community.” He acknowledged Broad Channel “is a better place because of the work she did.” Prior to Dawn’s Fun Run, she is said to have received multiple standing ovations. According to Bassetti, the first place runner in the Men’s division was, Tom Pattchet, and the first place runner in the Women’s division was Broad Channel’s own Carolyn Crocker. Dawn knew Carolyn since she was a little girl, Bassetti said, and “loved everything about Broad Channel.” Dawn’s Fun Run was sponsored by Lisena Landscaping, AllTasha Turner (left) and Erin Moss are still American Channel Market, Dalton’s Seaside Grill, Excel Urgent involved in BCVFD, even after Dawn’s passing. Rockaway Goes Bananas For Bicycles

By Elizabeth Holzer The annual Queens Bike Bonanza brought together the Department of Transportation, Recycle-A-Bicycle, and Bike New York to promote safe cycling throughout the Rockaway Peninsula. The three organizations pooled their resources to sponsor the event which included free helmets, a children's bike swap, and cycling lessons. “We collect about 2,000 unwanted bikes a year and put them back on the streets,” said Karen Overton, executive director of Recycle-A-Bicycle. “This is my favorite way of doing that because we can get kids [to] size up their bike with us, they get a free helmet from DOT, and Bike New York does a “learn to ride program.” Recycle-A-Bicycle is a citywide non-profit that promotes cycling and youth development simultaneously. Beyond the retail spaces they operate, they also sponsor Earn-A-Bike, which Overton describes as a “sweat-equity” program. “Young people earn the chance to build their own bike and take it home. It has to pass safety inspection. It teaches them how to maintain their own bike so it’s less likely to be thrown out if there is a repair that they can’t pay for. It’s also empowering to be like ‘I built the bike that I’m riding.’” Overton said. The Bike Bonanza happens every July in Rockaway and Recycle-A-Bicycle sponsors at least six similar community outreach events each year. “I believe this is the eighth year,” Overton said. “This is always our busiest Bike Bonanza. Especially after Hurricane Sandy, people were bringing in so many bikes because the rust was so terrible.” According to Overton, they can always tell which bikes survived Hurricane Sandy because the rust has a distinctive shade to it. Halfway through the event Recycle-A-Bicycle volunteers had swapped about 40 bikes. After the

kids pick up their free helmet from DOT and a bike they are welcome to take a cycling lesson from Bike New York. In addition to a free helmet, DOT created interactive maps for residents to visualize and vocalize transportation issues on the Peninsula. Residents were invited to place color-coded stickers directly on problem spots in Rockaway. “We’re looking at the East-West corridors in Far Rockaway. Seagirt Boulevard, Rockaway Freeway, Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and Beach Channel [Drive]. We’re trying to make walking, driving, cycling, and taking the bus more accessible and efficient,” said Jesse Cabrera, a DOT street ambassador. The DOT has been seeking auxiliary outreach methods that go beyond simply attending community board meetings, because several residents are unaware or unable to attend. The Street Ambassadors aim to close that gap. “We’re bringing the workshops to the people and asking, ‘what can we fix?’” Cabrera said. “We went to the library yesterday; we’re at the Bike Bonanza today. We also have a website with a map where people can input information about complaints or wishes. “Maybe we can add a crosswalk, change the timing of a signal, or repair the sidewalks.” Cabrera said, pointing out the areas that people have indicated as problematic.

Photos by Elizabeth Holzer

The maps reflect a variety of issues but yellow stickers that indicate concerns about speeding dominate much of the picture. “A lot of people are complaining about speeding. Here is Beach Channel Drive and you can see the concentration of stickers in that area,” Cabrera said. Residents also expressed concerns over lack of sidewalks. Back at the Recycle-A-Bicycle booth, Karen Overton jokes with some passing cyclists offering to swap out their high-end bike frames. According to Overton, her organization is currently working on establishing a regular presence in Rockaway. “We’re building out a space at the Rockaway Brewing Company. It’s going to be a weekend pop up shop and we’re scheduled to open the first weekend in August,” Overton said. Recycle-A-Bicycle plans on having volunteers equipped to perform basic repairs and she has the whole winter to figure out how to make it a full-time thing by next summer. Advocacy groups like these are working hard on community outreach to keep the community safe as we enter a more bicycle-centric era. If you’re interested in cycling or volunteering, Overton encourages anyone to reach out via the Recycle-A-Bicycle website.

Q&A With Rapper Porche Boxx

Family Run

Bradley grew up in a difficult situation. Never knowing his father, he was raised by his mother, who inspired him to write. Outside of school, Bradley spent a lot of his time at the Ocean Bay Action Center. “We would play ball to stay out of trouble,” he recalled. The Wave recently met up with the upand-coming rapper, Porche Boxx, at the Queens Public Library on Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway, to talk about his music, community and his love of basketball. Q: So, when did you start rapping? I have been doing it for about 8 years, seriously. I do [the production] all by myself. Sometimes I put out songs online. Q: Have you done any live performances?

Far Rockaway Rapper Porche Boxx

By Daniel Offner Far Rockaway rap artist Donald Bradley, a.k.a. “Porche Boxx,” feels his community always gets a bad rap. That’s why he hopes to spread a more positive message to the easternmost part of the peninsula, with his upbeat bars and rhymes.

Q: What inspired you to become a rapper? The loss of Stack Bundles [in 2007]. He would always carry himself around like a star. He was an inspiration to music in general. Q: Who are some of the rappers you have worked with in the past?

I did music with Chinx… I [also] used to be in a group, but we all went our separate ways. It’s hard not having the support of your peers. Q: I wanted to know, where did the name “Porche Boxx” come from? It was a nickname from [playing] Basketball. It really came from "horsepower," because I would "horse" the ball when I played. Q: Why no "S" as in Porsche? Legal reasons... Leave off the last 'S' for savings. Q: Who has been the biggest inspiration on your music? My mom—growing up in a tough environment, my mom pushed me to be a better person. Now, I have two kids of my own. She made me want to be a better father.

Family Fun At The Health Fair By Patricia Hannan Not even steady afternoon rainfall could stop hundreds from participating in the vision of Battalion Pentecostal Assembly Church, achieving a “level of growth and maturity… that they may influence the community, the state, and the world.” Pastor David Cockfield, of the Beach 67th Street church, led the 5th Annual Community Health Fair on Saturday, July 16, offering a slew of educational, recreational, social, and religious resources for the Far Rockaway community, as well as complimentary food and drinks for all. While the sound system and congregants provided non-stop music and live dance performances, children enjoyed snow cones and free toy giveaways with their Sunday school teacher. Complimentary blood pressure screening, glucose testing, HIV testing, and a Zumba class were also provided to promote healthy lifestyles. Gillian Jacob, an administrative aide and outreach partner with the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center, delivered an empowering message for everyone in attendance. “All the food that we eat counts,” she told passersby, “even the more than one-third we eat away from home.” Jacob, who also runs the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition services at Addabbo’s 62nd Street center, provided strong evidence, as to why people should look to cut fat, calories and/or salt intake. “The average American eats five or more meals outside the home every week,” said Jacob, “and women who eat out five or more times a week take in nearly 300 more calories per day.” The research compared that 300 calories as the equivalent of a 30-pound weight gain throughout a period of one year, she said. Suggestions for healthier eating outside the home included individually owned and operated restaurants that pride themselves on “real home cooking” instead of frozen and highly salted food. The lack of large intake of salt also means restaurant patrons will likely be less thirsty and less likely to retain fluid. As a popular example, Jacob pointed to coffee and, during this summer season, iced beverages as a culprit. “Watch out for those fancy coffee drinks,” she warned. “The fancy designer coffee drinks [like at Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts] may contain 200 calories or more, even before they add whipped cream.” She asked health fair attendees to consider small lifestyle changes in diet, such as having cups of tea or coffee with low-fat milk for fewer calories. “Is your child a picky eater,” Jacob asked one mother. According to Jacob, “a baby doubles [his or her] weight” in the first six months of life. For a seven-pound newborn, that means he or she will reach 14-pounds in half a year. “Encourage your child to eat when [he or she] is hungry and stop when [he or she] is full,” Jacob suggested, reminding the parent “eating should not be something to fight over. “Don’t make [him or her] eat more food than she wants. Children whose mothers made them eat all of the food on their plate often have a weight problem for the rest of their lives. You should not act too controlling over food. If you control your child’s eating, this increases your child’s chances of making bad food choices on [his or her] own later in life.” Pregnant women, new mothers, and children under age five can get WIC even if they are not a legal resident, not a citizen, or do not have a Social Security number, and enrolling in the program will not affect the ability to become a citizen of the United States. Jacob suggests calling the Growing Up Healthy Hotline for more information at 1-800-522-5006, or to visit their local WIC provider, such as at 6200 Beach Channel Drive. To find out more on the Battalion Pentecostal Assembly Church, visit their website at battalionchurch.org. Gillian Jacob can be reached at 718-945-7150 Ext. 1814 or by emailing abrady@addabbo.org.

One couple, passing through the neighborhood, stopped by the crowded health fair on a Photos By Patricia Hannan whim together.

This little girl was one of more than a dozen to receive free toys from the church.

This little guy looks happy to take home a new toy.

Lugging new toys around the large lot all afternoon was no problem.

In addition to gifts, there was plenty of food and entertainment at the Battalion Pentecostal Health Fair.

Friends were grateful for and compared their unexpected gifts.

Slice Of Life By Beth Hanning Jennifer Aniston—who I am a fan of—recently wrote a letter that was printed in the Huffington Post. In the letter she is very upset over the media’s obsession with her. She goes on to say that she is not happy with the way woman are treated in society and

objectified. I 100 percent agree those women are held to a different standard than men, and that there is a double standard relating to many issues. However, I did not choose to be in a business that I make or break my success on by my looks and figure. Jennifer Aniston chose

that lifestyle. The Hollywood double standard has been going on since the beginning of entertainment. Maybe Jennifer should do some research about real problems facing women in America. Five percent of engineers in the United States are women! Forty percent of MBAs are awarded to

women yet less than 15 percent of women are Fortune 500 Officers. Jennifer Aniston did not complain in the early 1990s when she became a household name when she was on the hit television show Friends. I never once remember hearing her complain when she was asked about the haircut craze that hairstylists simply called “The Rachel” named after her famous character. I also do not remember her complaining about the objectification of women when she was awarded $1 million per episode. I love her but did she really think that was due to her excellent comic ability or that she was very attractive and both men and women tuned in to see her (and the other attractive members of the cast). The following is my letter to Jennifer Aniston: Dear Jen: Although I love your films and you over the years, I have to disagree with your piece that you wrote to the Huffington Post. You have for many years made a very healthy income that put you in Forbes Magazine as one of the highest paid celebrities in 2014. When you come into the business of entertainment and become as famous as you, I would have to assume that being spied on by the paparazzi is part of the deal. Now I know that the paparazzi has become a bit much in the last decade but you did not seem to mind being spotted in your bikini paddle boarding where everyone spoke about your fit body. I cannot imagine having to deal with the paparazzi, but if I was one of the richest people on the planet I think I could deal with the scrutiny. Maybe if the scrutiny is too much you should move out of the entertainment industry. Maybe buy a farm in the Midwest with private property that the paparazzi cannot enter. If you love acting, maybe you can make a donation to a small community college and become a professor teaching your love of acting. I am sure many students would love to study under you. While I agree with you that change needs to be made, I just think you are a little too late after you have made a small fortune from the business you are unhappy with. Girl Power In Rockaway

s r e t t e L

fun, I love to do lots of weird and kind of extreme things that guys do - and that's cool! I might not be the best at it, but I love it! And I want to keep doing those things and I want other girls to uninhibitedly do those things, too, if they want! Jessie [May] of Ethoscope and Jenna [Baker] of Indaculture, are so special to have grown up here, pursuing music despite it not being the social norm. It's women like them who are empowering younger generations of girls in Rockaway to pursue their passions. It's important that girls understand the massive spectrum of hobbies and passions that they can pursue and feel confident to do them.

We are currently working on our next album "Songs for Mermaids." That is literally for, all the girls out there who are killing it and living out their inner mermaid all day, every day. I could go on forever about what mermaids represent for me, but that is a totally different girl power topic of conversation, hah! I had never consciously asked myself the questions you asked on Saturday, so, once I got to thinking it was like a can of worms opened in my head. Just wanted to share my thoughts. Thanks for reading. LORENA LEIGH

CITY OF NEW YORK OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET (NYCOMB) New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT DISASTER RECOVERY (CDBG-DR) NOTICE OF INTENT TO REQUEST RELEASE OF FUNDS REQUEST FOR RELEASE OF FUNDS On or about August 2, 2016, the City of New York (the City) anticipates submitting a request to the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the release of CDBG-DR funds authorized by the “Disaster Relief Appropriations Act, 2013” (Public Law 113-2) to undertake the construction of Resilient Power Hubs in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City as part of the Resiliency Innovations for a Stronger Economy (RISE) program. The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) proposes to construct Resilient Power Hubs, in flood prone areas of Brooklyn. Resilient Power Hubs use a combination of three main power generation devices— a micro-Combined-Heat-and-Power plant, a solar photovoltaic panel array, and an energy storage battery system—to provide back-up power to increase the resiliency of these businesses and reduce grid electricity use. Estimated CDBG-DR funding will total $2,892,350. CATEGORICAL EXCLUSION SUBJECT TO SECTION 58.35 In accordance with 24 CFR Part 58.35 of the HUD Environmental Review Procedures for HUD funded activities, the construction of Resilient Power Hubs in New York City has been determined to be categorically excluded from the Environmental Assessment requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act. The project identified above does not involve new construction or the expansion of a building’s footprint. The following are specific businesses and their respective locations proposed for Resilient Power Hub installation: Banner Properties, LLC located at 2715 West 15th Street in Coney Island, New York; and 284 Van Brunt, LLC located at 284 Van Brunt Street and LTD Machine Shop/Dwight Street Acquisitions located at 163 Dwight Street in the Red Hook neighborhood. Additional project information is contained in the Environmental Review Record (ERR) and Categorical Exclusion documentation on file with Mr. Calvin Johnson, Assistant Director, CDBG - Disaster Recovery, New York City Office of Management and Budget, 255 Greenwich Street, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10007, (212) 788-6024 and may be examined or copied on weekdays between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The documents may also be found at http://www.nyc.gov/html/cdbg/html/environmental_notices/environmental_notices_business.shtml. PUBLIC COMMENTS Any individual, group, or agency may submit written comments to NYCOMB at the address listed above. All comments received by close of business on August 1, 2016 will be considered by NYCOMB prior to requesting the release of funds. Those wishing to comment should specify which part of this Notice they are addressing. RELEASE OF FUNDS NYCOMB certifies to HUD that Dean Fuleihan in his capacity as Certifying Officer of the CDBG-DR Program consents to accept the jurisdiction of the Federal Courts if an action is brought to enforce responsibilities in relation to the environmental review process and that these responsibilities have been satisfied. HUD's approval of the certification satisfies its responsibilities under NEPA and related laws and authorities, and allows NYCOMB to use CDBG-DR funds. OBJECTIONS TO RELEASE OF FUNDS HUD will consider objections to its release of funds and NYCOMB’s certification for a period of fifteen days following its actual receipt of the request only if they are on one of the following bases: (a) the certification was not executed by the Certifying Officer of NYCOMB; (b) NYCOMB has omitted a step or failed to make a decision or finding required by HUD regulations at 24 CFR Part 58; (c) the grant recipient or other participants in the project have committed funds or incurred costs not authorized by 24 CFR Part 58 before approval of a release of funds by HUD; or (d) another Federal agency acting pursuant to 40 CFR Part 1504 has submitted a written finding that the project is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of environmental quality. Objections must be prepared and submitted in accordance with the required procedures (24 CFR Part 58) and shall be addressed to: Tennille Parker, Disaster Recovery and Special Issues Division, Office of Block Grant Assistant, HUD, 451 7th Street SW, Rm. 7272, Washington, DC 20410. Dear Editor: Over the past two weeks I feel like there have been lots of "girl power" messages in my life affirming me to be strong in who I am and what I want for my life and career. I do think that Rockaway is bubbling over with testosterone and I love that rugged nature of Rockaway but, I have more to say than that. When I began playing live music with a band, a little less than two years ago, I played with all older men. I was the only girl. It was fun and they all shredded, but what I didn't know then was that the energy wasn't suited for me. I began adding girls to my act last summer and slowly, but surely, two of my best friends, Taryn Langton and Maddy Kinsella—who started out as backup singers—picked up brand new instruments, learned them and are now fully assimilated musicians in this awesome band we've all created together. The energy changed so much when we became more girl-centric. Not only could we “oomph” up the harmonies musically, but our outlooks and confidence in ourselves as women who love to sing, dance and perform all synced up.

I have more fun as part of a musical girl-gang and the music has changed. It's different now; our music derives from a softer passion, intuition and sensitivity and is expressed more authentically. Rockaway is amazing and I am so grateful to have been welcomed into this incredibly special community. I've been so influenced by my friends here who also play music and the magical feeling I get in my gut when I am just out biking or surfing or walking my dog experiencing Rockaway and all that the environment has to offer. I do hope, though, that as my journey as a musician has brought me to a place of self-empowerment, fulfillment and confidence as a girl - that I can spread that energy. That the girls who come to see our shows, or hear us play, are inspired and also empowered by what they hear. I love to dance, I love to sing, I love to have

Tales From The Rock – By Joe Mara –

INTRODUCTION Shame on you! Some of you thought this was going to be a post about a MAN’S ONLY guide to that most important of all human functions in the world, Facebook. Hey I’m not chauvinistic at all and I’m the Rockaway Man and herein are simple guidelines for you, male, female, VWXY or any other sex these days to happily communicate on Facebook with me.

LIKES First I like Facebook primarily because it keeps me in touch with my immediate family in England and my extended family in Ireland, sadly and inevitably now all cousins and aunts. Alas, there are no parents or uncles in the old country anymore! I also like trying to use Facebook in a creative and hopefully informative way with a little bit of fun thrown in. Thus I’m still exploring it, hoping down the road to utilize it in some combined artistic and business union. My two older and presumably wiser brothers on the other hand look at Facebook with utter contempt and don’t use it. One reason being the example outlined below. DISLIKE Initially when I first saw people posting about where they were having lunch on Facebook i.e. “Robert is at Trendy Bollix.” I’d respond with: “Joe is not at Trendy Bollix, he’s home watching television.” Witty, mature stuff hey? I tell you it’s literally taken years for me to get to this stage of my life! It seems some of my new Facebook pals did not find these comments

humorous at all. Sure it’s a sad world these days I thought when I couldn’t have a bit of craic with all my new Facebook ‘friends’...

your guy. That is to say, to make it perfectly clear, the last candidate I liked in your party was Abraham Lincoln. Okay?

POLITICS When I first went on Facebook I immediately got stuck into passionate arguments (being a righteous man) with people on the left as well as people on the eight. I’m a Devil’s Advocate kind of guy. For example I’ve been banned for the last year from commentating in The Guardian newspaper in England because I used an inoffensive English slang word in relation to one of their pompous art Critics. In America this same word cs a heinous swearword so I assume the Guardian’s “moderator” has to be American. He needs to read up on England a bit more but he’ll never see this comment anyway because gosh, I’ve been censored by a liberal newspaper! Recently I’ve given up on most of my previous political discourses with certain folks on Facebook. Instead I’m now spreading joy and great happiness on the Internet with photos or articles from groups like, “Vintage News,” “Odd Facts/Inventions,” “Classic Horror Movies” etc. They interest me and some of the time more importantly, they make me laugh. We’ve all needed some good laughs these past few weeks I’d vouchsafe. American electionwise I still post the odd political article if I think my candidate is being unfairly trashed. I don’t mind getting the other side’s view, I like knowing what people are thinking but it DRIVES ME BATTY when a ‘friend’ in the real world or Facebook puts me on some kind of constantly rotating pseudo Patriotic/Militia/Gun loving/ God fearing/Immigrant hating postings list. So let me be very clear here, I DON’T LIKE YOUR CANDIDATE. Truth is, I don’t like my candidate very much either but I dislike her less than

AMEN Aside from politics the other eternal bugbear in life is religion. The two supposed no-no’s in bar conversation are thus politics and religion. That should be the rule on Facebook too. Please don’t send me any posts asking me to type ‘AMEN.’ I am one of the most anti-religious persons you will ever meet due to shabby experiences of it as a kid and a teenager. I start to feel strangely irritated when I get these posts. Hey I don’t send people posts asking them to sign off with ‘Trotsky’ or ‘Che Guevara.’ And why should I? There is ONE notable exception to this rule. If a certain woman from Melbourne, Australia asks me to type ‘Amen’ or indeed anything else even including all of Melbourne’s Yellow Pages I will do it in a heartbeat. There is always an exception to any rule, in this case there’s the Melbourne exception.

PETS Sometimes I am just shocked, shocked to suddenly realize that people I’ve known for years who’ve become my friends on Facebook are what I call ‘gooey’ animal lovers. I am not. I don’t dislike or even hate animals but I am positively not interested in what your fluffy ball of whatever has been doing lately. I came from a

household where one side liked animals (my dad) and the other (my mum) was brought up in a farm environment where dogs were never in the house, because they were considered working dogs. Animals had to earn their keep, the farm I kid you not even had working cats! So surprise, surprise with odds like that with my mum any pet we got didn’t stand a chance of staying very long. Animals - dogs, (we never had cats) would be given to other families at any excuse. Once, famously and sadly for my dad and us, Jippy our longhaired dachshund and longest staying pet who we all loved (except for the obvious malcontent in the house) was shockingly deposited in Ireland with relatives on a visit. The excuse my mum came up with to get rid of him was that he’d gotten sick on the ferry coming over to Ireland and thus he was ‘terminally ill.’ He lived another 10 years. LASTLY If you’re my friend in real life as well as Facebook I take umbrage if you don’t ever OCCASIONALLY like something I’ve posted. I actually get mortally offended, I’m serious about this. If you don’t see any comments from me or likes after a while, guess what? You’ve transgressed Mara’s rule of natural selection. I do a lot of ‘likes,’ if something amuses me, makes me think or simply moves me I’m grateful to ANYBODY who does that. REAL friends in the real world I always ‘like.’ I forgive great nephews, great nieces who never like anything I post for they know not what they do, they are teenagers. Also in the new age of Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram and now Pokémon hunting I should just feel privileged that they are still a presence on Facebook for an old fogey like me. Remember, in cyberspace no-one can hear you scream.

National Health Center Week Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center is celebrating National Health Center Week 2016, from Aug. 7 – Aug. 13, to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers, the largest and most successful system of primary healthcare. We will be hosting several events at our locations in Far Rockaway, Jamaica and Red Hook. They include: the Grand Opening of the Health Center’s WIC site in Red Hook, Brooklyn on Tuesday, Aug. 9; a Staff Appreciation Breakfast at the Sutphin Boulevard site on Thursday, Aug. 11; and a Back to School Health Fair/Student Appreciation event at our flagship location – 6200 Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway, on Saturday, Aug. 13. One of the bright spots in America’s health care system, health centers started 50 years ago as a pilot project during President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. Today, they have compiled a significant record of success that includes: • Reducing income and ethnic health disparities nationwide, even in the poorest and most challenged communities • Reducing infant mortality rates • Producing $24 billion in annual health system savings • Reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and unnecessary visits to the ER • Maintaining patient satisfaction levels of nearly 100 percent. Health centers serve more than 23 million people nationwide – that’s one in 15 Americans, including 7 million children and 260,000 veterans. Health centers are also increasingly becoming the trusted provider of choice for many families, whether they are insured or not. Evidence shows patients choose health centers because they are convenient, affordable, and offer a range of services from a team of caring professionals. Studies also show the quality of care at a health center is as good as or even better than private practices. The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center is a non-profit ambulatory health care center serving the residents of New York City communities such as the Rockaways, Jamaica, Ozone Park, and Red Hook, with quality primary medical services. It operates with federal and state funding, and is governed by a board of directors composed primarily of local community residents. The organization pursues a policy of offering human services to the public and strives to improve and expand these services in the spirit of the late congressman, Joseph P. Addabbo who served the Queens community with unfailing dedication throughout his career and in whose name the board of directors decided to name Addabbo. Health centers need sustained federal investment to meet the growing demand for their services and help more Americans gain access to affordable healthcare.

Furor at the city for even planning to move AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) patients to the Neponsit Home for the Aged is rising so fast it’s impossible to keep track of everyone expressing anger and/or fear. Three major Rockaway civic organizations are spurring a massive letter-writing campaign. Making headlines both in the daily papers and on television is the question of the parking restrictions on the west end of the peninsula. “Why were these people given a private beach,” is the question being asked by everybody outside the community.

40 Years Ago... Handicapped, homeless and under privileged children will attend the annual outing sponsored this year on Aug. 8 by Walter Kaner. Playland is providing free rides during the afternoon and Long Island Lighting Company will supply the refreshments. Raindate is Aug. 15. Members of Trinity-St. John’s Episcopal Church of Hewlett are pleased with the recent successful merger of the two churches which communicants attend in large numbers at regular services. This talk about the subway fare going to 50 cents has local commuters figuring. At double fare, that would make a round trip to the city cost two dollars. The Long Island Rail Road may yet turn out to be the cheapest way to commute to the city. The Chamber of Commerce of the Rockaways will bury coins, ranging from a penny to a dollar, at specified locations on the beach and let small boys and girls have the fun of hunting for fun. They will keep whatever they find. Date and time will be announced. It’s all part of the chamber’s golden anniversary celebration.

50 Years Ago... The deteriorating steel bulkhead along the bayfront in Rockaway Park is causing concern to property owners on the north side of Beach Channel Drive. Such bulkheading today costs about $100 a foot. Danny Young, proprietor of the Chou Kong Chinese restaurant on

Beach 116th Street, thinks Rockaway is a great place. He says business is improving constantly and he is thinking seriously of making his permanent home here. Now some Democrats claim that Milton Jacobowitz ran out on the Peninsula Democratic club when he endorsed the Beame ticket in the primary. The local party leader says he just reassessed the situation. When construction started last week at Beach 108th Street between the Boulevard and the Freeway, word quickly spread that the Surfside Shopping Center had been started. Then it was learned that the work is in preparation for a new parking lot. Borough President Mario Cariello spent a few days at his summer home in Neponsit last week nursing a sore throat, but he was well enough to attend the Knights of Columbus Masonic rally at the World’s Fair last Saturday and to say a few words to the big gathering.

60 Years Ago... Dorsey F. Short, associate editor of The Wave, is currently on a twoweek vacation in the Catskills. Mrs. James Bulloch and children of Beach 125th Street visited friends in Port Jefferson last Wednesday. August Bellon, Inc., 72-11 Amstel Blvd., has received orders to supply fabricated steel for two contracts recently awarded in connection with preparation of the former Long Island Rail Road’s Rockaway division for integration into the New York subway system. Tommy (Hurricane) Jackson, who made his ring debut while a local resident, won a unanimous decision over former world champion, Ezzerd Charles.

By John Sica and Joe McGivney The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League played under beautiful weather with perfect volleyball conditions and players are wondering if bad weather will ever hit Riis Park this summer. Keep enjoying the wonderful nights. This week the boardwalk was filled after the matches and the league reveled to the sounds of Brooklyn’s Best Tuesday Night Band, Gearth, Wind and Fireman, featuring the RBVL committee’s own Joe McGivney. In other words RBVL plus GWF equals F-U-N. The Strawberry Moon was spectacular, perfect timing for the Rockaway Bizarre to host the RBVL night. With the great live music serenading the packed boardwalk, the barbequed treats kept the crowd in a party mood late into the evening. Kobeyaki Got Killed by Sullivan and Galleshaw 4-1, which gives S&G a 105 record over the last three weeks, moving them up to fourth place with an 18-17 record. All night the S&G crew had a little fun with injured players Kevin O. and Crowley texting them about how they were getting crushed until they finally spilled the beans to say they really won 4-1. Still how did S&G win four but lose the last game 21-3? Well a 21-3 loss counts the same in the standings as a 22-20 one so what the heck. Coach John Sica missed four weeks due to that four letter

word, (WORK) and in his absence a funny thing happened. With no coach, everyone became a coach. Luckily if anyone on the Rincon Gringos makes a mistake there are 12 people to point it out to them. With that kind of encouragement it’s surprising that the team doesn’t have a psychiatrist. The Gringos though were able to pull out the rubber game after being down 17-15 thanks to the ex-coaches run of seven straight aces to ice it. Aces to Ice It, could be a good name. The girls Morgan, Billy and Mary were setting beautifully to raise the men’s game in the victory. Owney’s Bootleggers continued their five week losing streak by dropping four to Playland. Ice Man was his usual self. They’re just trying to get themselves out of the hole and get their plays together for the playoffs – which Pat Miley believes can be a big win for them. The second division is tight and Miley predicts a lot of upsets on that Saturday in August. Patty finally came back, fully healed, to The Stanii. They took two against Beach House, who had their team stacked with a few younger players. Their resident cheerleader, Maf, their Baryshnikov, doing a triple pirouette on the sidelines in his traditional fashion. Greaney did a great job, but Debbie was still tired after a week of work this summer.

Watch out for the Beach House in the playoffs; they are on a roll. After losing three in a row, Hall of Fame Billiards finally figured out how to talk to each other. No H says the secret to winning came after Mr. Happy left for the evening, which they may try every week. By The Beach Cocos started out on the wrong fit. Elefant had to work again and the team would like to thank him for the $75 donation to his other teammates. PB and his creepy mustache are tickling Mickey in Disney, and DP is losing his pants in Ibiza. We thank the NYPD for giving Tom Mac off this week. The team beat Star Wars Cantina four games after dropping the first game. Ryan Sirg was able to get out of baby and house duty, and Mike P. refused to lose. Dalton’s dropped three games to the Sand Spikers and were disappointed with their play. There was a little black rain cloud over their heads the whole night, which improved only during the after party. Chicks to Go Island took three from Boarders in five close games with great sportsmanship all around from both teams. Tim from Chicks to Go reawakened the blocking monster for his birthday and blocked numerous spikes from Boarders that would have crushed his teammates. Lil Den picked up the slack from his continued on page 57

RBVL & GWF Make Alphabet Soup old time teammates diving and grabbing drops, aided by his dad with ace serves. Pat smacked the ball over with every hit with Tracy, Cathy and Jac bumping and setting their teammates. The Morleys worked together to finish up Chicks to Go’s victorious night. EZ Company went 3-2 against the Odd Couples. There were distractions galore as Jill confessed she can get wine not with ice, but in ice. This was greeted by the ladies with awe and wonderment and countless, “Can you get me some?” Greg the Keg revealed that he now has a device that holds 4 gallons of his patented Rum Bash in a backpack, and it has an attachment that dispenses perfect 18 ounce shots. The ladies loved Jill’s ice wine and the guys all want Greg’s device. But with these distractions there was still volleyball to be played. TJ did his best impersonation of a way downtown lifeguard circa 1980, meaning he was on break a lot. Old Dan got the boot while the rest of his clan trains in the Donegal Forest for the Naked and Afraid TV show. Mother of Butterflies rested her balky hinge but everyone expects a big return next week. Speaking of returns, welcome back Sheila Ray. (Maybe someday we’ll see something in the paper about Sheila’s husband, who’s rumored to also be in the league.) KKRN breathed some life into the group even when it looked like some players should be DNR. Coach and Double M ran home to settle a bet, was the gorgeous moon more orange than Donald Trump’s hair? Gerritsen Girl raved about the mixed drinks at the Bazaar and said they were even better than the Sloe Gin Fizzes she was weaned on. The Cape Cod Irish Villagers won the week for

the second week in a row, beating Downtown Digga’s 3-2. Tall Pat had to leave early, but the team gelled. Is Casino Auto Body the first team in league history to have a squad of 20-something women playing with SSI-collecting men? It’s All Good has won all seven of their matches in the Beach Breeze Division and Cement Shoes and TBG come down later and later each week. Is there a correlation? Perhaps. Last Call has won all seven of their matches, too, and they sit on top of the pack in the Star Division. Nice going. When was the last time the Baranha’s went 1-4 two weeks in a row? Wednesday night. When was the last time before this week? Nobody can remember. Look for them to bounce back next Wednesday. Special thanks to the Brooklyn Faithful who made the trip out to Riis Park for the concert – The McGivney’s, Maffa’s, Borowiec’s, Mary Kae and Barbara – and the NJ fans who came a long way to hear some old songs – Marie, Julia, Lenny and Diane. Renegade blood runs thick, my friends. Friday, July 29, is the Gray Beard’s Family Fun Run with races for all ages and levels of competition. It’s just fun! Additionally, Bay Ridge’s top Tuesday night band, Gearth, Wind and Fireman (featuring long-time RBVL member Joe McGivney), will be playing live music for the races and subsequent BBQ. Come on by and have some fun. And see what Joe does when he is not bumping, setting or spiking. We know it’s hard to think about life after volleyball, and the fall, but September brings its own joy. The beaches are now open a week after Labor Day, the weather cools down and the water stays warm. And on Saturday, Sept. 17, the second an-
