HOUSE FOR ENJYOING THE HARSH COLD - 5TH LIXIL INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ARCHITECTUAL COMPETITION As the light of the sun gently appears on the horizon, it is possible to see the contrast of the white cold of the frosty winter with the warm, cozy wooden house that stands on the field of the serene hills of Taiki-cho. Inside, one can hear the sound of water dripping: it is the natural flow of the water as the snow slowly melts, converging to a single point. As one stands in front of the large windows, it is possible to see a frozen forest on the horizon. However, the attention does not goes to the outside, but to the center of the house: it is here where the heat of the fireplace invites the guests to gather together under the red chimney and sit around the table to enjoy the company of each other, in the heart of the house. The HEART HOUSE was born as the result of thedialogue within the building and its surrounding landscape. In addition, it embraces whoever want to flee from the harsh winter, as it stands as a comfort shelter. In its interior space, a play of split-levels avoids creating interiors defined by walls, giving a greater fluidity and enabling its spaces to form a beautiful mosaic of ply-wood and window frames, reflected in its façades.

Therefore, the visitor can experience multiple sensations as the spaces are revealed and discovered. The sensorial relationships vary at each moment as one moves upwards. The play of light/shadow, open/closed, warm/cold are concepts of what the team consider an ideal house in the 21st Century, without putting aside the Japanese culture. Intrinsically, the design is also the result of ecological concerns, as the worry with creating an energetically efficient building with fine conditions for the climatic control using passive techniques and systems with low energy consumption. Looking in this way, the house was designed to collect rainwater and snow-water, it uses photovoltaic window frames to supply energy demand, it has a geothermic heating and cooling system and natural cross-ventilation.
