This proposal seeks to create interfaces that respond to the site conditions of Petit Goave, namely, sunlight, to inform program. Woven strips of bamboo become screens to filter light into the classrooms so that they are entirely diffuse to avoid distracting glare. Light becomes a critical component and driver of space which also lends itself to adaptable and flexible program that changes during the course of the day according to light. Not only does this intervention become a schoolhouse for children, but also a community space for Petit Goave. The overall scheme also reflects adapability, as 2 buildings that sheared to open up more play areas in the site and that are connected through a central courtyard so that when the louvres are open, the entire site becomes the building. The site terraces to accomodate raised and sunken modules in the courtyard, and these changes of elevation encourages play. To continue the element of play, a 5-foot datum exists across the site that changes in texture, from green walls, to perforations, to bookshelves. The occupiable roof responds to the small size of the site to provide a large open play area. LE PARAVENT | 04

SUN STUDY
SECTION
LOUVRES | The louvres are made of thin woven strips of bamboo that are 8 inches wide, 1 inch deep, and 8 feet high. They are supported by a steel cable that runs through the center of the louvres and is kept in tension by 2 turnbuckles. The bamboo is nailed into caps on the top and bottom made of HDPE (high-density polyethylene), which connect the bamboo to structural tracks which hold the cables for the photovoltaics.

PLAY
WALLS
Three scales of louvres are incorporated into the building--one system controlled by photovoltaics that allows the louvres to open and close in response to the sun, play louvres that are segmented for children to interact with, and larger scale panels that become collapsible walls to allow flexible program.

PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES
THERMAL MASSING | the roofs are sloped outwards to channel water into gutters that are inset into the perimeter wall. The gutter directs water into a cistern in the back of the site to provides water for washing hands and watering the green walls and gardens.

STRUCTURE |
on top of the concrete perimeter walls, interior shear walls, and steel columns rests open web steel joists that support the corrguated metal roof on the eastern building and corrugated metal decking and concrete slab on the west side. The entire building is elevated on concrete piers, about 3.5 feet high in the north but is flush to the site on the south side.
