The Seabrook Island community is committed to preserving the island’s natural resources for future generations. As an Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary, Seabrook is home to many wildlife, including bobcats, red and gray foxes, and white-tailed deer. Bottlenose dolphins often feed near Captain Sam’s Inlet during low tide. The island also hosts more than 30 species of reptiles, such as alligators, tree frogs, and chameleons, with the loggerhead sea turtle being particularly notable. Seabrook Island is a sanctuary for over 80 bird species, including bald eagles, roseate spoonbills, pelicans, egrets, and ospreys.
One of the unique experiences on Seabrook Island is witnessing dolphin strand feeding, where dolphins push fish onto the beach and then follow to eat them. This rare spectacle is more common in the spring and fall, with peak activity occurring within two hours of low tide. A popular viewing spot is at the northernmost tip of North Beach at Captain Sam’s Inlet.
To ensure the safety of both visitors and wildlife, please adhere to the following guidelines: do not approach, touch, swim with, or feed the dolphins as it is dangerous and illegal. Maintain a distance of 50 yards from dolphins when in a boat or kayak and 15 yards on land, and avoid bringing dogs into restricted areas. Keep noise to a minimum and report inappropriate behavior to beach patrol.
May 15 - October 31
Turn off all lights visible from the beach by 9 PM to protect sea turtles. Our beaches are critical habitat areas, so please obey all signage, keep off the dunes, and do not approach turtles, hatchlings, or turtle nests.Ensure dogs do not chase birds and never swim with or feed dolphins. Additionally, fill in any holes on the beach before you leave, and refrain from using glass containers on the beach.
