Due to the demands of a growing family, the client requested to have the existing layout of the house largely extended and adapted which has a large impact on the uses of the spaces and the structure.

The current status of this project is on hold until a further appointment is made with the planning authority to continue the planning application process.

LMU Calcutta House, Aldgate East Main Block Renovation Professional Experience - Part 1 Placement

Project Description This was a project that I assisted on during my Part 1 year out working at Architecture PLB. The project was a major interior adaptation and renovation to the existing building and I worked on RIBA stages 1 ‘Preparation and Brief’ and ‘Concept Design’.

N

London Metropolitan University were relocating their architecture and design department from their Commercial Road Campus to their Calcutta House Main Block campus so we worked on the feasibility studies in relocating the entire department to their desired new location. I assisted in producing the proposed floor plans and the proposed conceptual images for the project. Site

MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE WORKS

N

Project Description

Cocoti For our final design project we were given the brief to design a mixed use residential building which incorporated normal domestic rooms but also included shared, communal spaces such as kitchens, bathrooms, living areas, and spaces for working individually and collectively. The design also had to include retail units, a nursing home, a nursery, plus associated outdoor spaces. The make up of the people occupying the buildings was 50% partially sighted people, 50% fully sighted, 25% elderly and 25% under the age of 10. For this reason, sound and texture was as important as sight in determining the character of the spaces.

The design project evolved through the development of physical components throughout the first semester. The elements of sound and texture in particular have been taken into account as the building’s main design purpose is to aid people that are partially sighted. The qualities of paper and the behaviour of paper as a material heavily influenced the nature of the building’s design.

Site - Meiji Dori, Shibuya-Ku

The site is located in Tokyo’s central district ward of Shibuya-Ku within an area called Meiji Dori. This area of Tokyo is extremely dense, comprising thriving commercial retail outlets, businesses, and residential apartments. The ward of Shibuya-Ku, along with the rest of Tokyo, is in a state of flux, particularly when it comes to the demolition and replacement of buildings. All of Tokyo’s invested money goes into the land value instead of the quality of construction in buildings. This is the main reason we see the skyline of Tokyo rapidly change in form. Within Shibuya-Ku, businesses and residents are renting areas within privately owned properties (usually owned by real estate companies). This is exactly how the Cocoti department store is occupied. The ward of Shibuya-Ku is governed by Shibuya City Planning Office, which oversees any proposed developments that will impact the area. They also ensure the wellbeing of residents who live within the ward and set out a range of pledges and polices to keep a positive order to the Shibuya-Ku ward.

This following section of work is a fragment of my design project which investigates the material qualities of paper

paper folds photograph sized to 1:2 at A3

Paper folding Repetitively folding strips of paper eventually forms into a roll, which has significant strength properties. The process of repetitively folding the paper comes from the monotonous process of drawing the lines on the lined paper with black magic marker pen. 841mm

Although both compositions are different in physicality, the method of making these are very similar.

Partition Types For the bridge link envelope, there are two main partition types. Type 1 is an internal construction and type 2 is an external construction. The use of paper with these partition constructions follow similar construction methods that are already used in Japan.
