If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking
by
Daniel Sabzghabaei (2015)
If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain. -Emily Dickinson (1830 – 1886)
Notation
-Feathered beaming indicates a gradual change in the speed of the notes. -In the example here: 32nd notes to 8th notes and 8th notes to 32nd notes. -Gradual fade to niente.
Pedaling and Tempo Phrasing -Pedaling in the work is very specific, as is the tempo phrasing. -In general, the piano should let every gesture ring to create a large sense of space and depth throughout the work. -In regards to tempo phrasing: there are a plethora of accel., rit., and rubato markings throughout. -These are integral in performance and should be adhered to. -A constant shift between motion and stagnation should be felt as the piece progresses.
