The Blue Booby

by

Daniel Sabzghabaei (2017)

Text The Blue Booby (1991)1 The blue booby lives on the bare rocks of Galápagos and fears nothing. It is a simple life: they live on fish, and there are few predators. Also, the males do not make fools of themselves chasing after the young ladies. Rather, they gather the blue objects of the world and construct from them a nest—an occasional Gaulois package, a string of beads, a piece of cloth from a sailor’s suit. This replaces the need for dazzling plumage; in fact, in the past fifty million years the male has grown considerably duller, nor can he sing well. The female, though, asks little of him— the blue satisfies her completely, has a magical effect on her. When she returns from her day of gossip and shopping, she sees he has found her a new shred of blue foil: for this she rewards him with her dark body, the stars turn slowly in the blue foil beside them like the eyes of a mild savior. -James Tate (1943–2015) 1 from Selected Poems, Copyright © 1991 by James Tate. Used with permission from Wesleyan University Press and the Tate estate.

Performance Notes Arrows represent a gradual change from one state to another; here from oo to Woh. -Black circles represent a closed lip position, like a kiss. -Open circles represent an open lip position. like a bright smile. -Diamond noteheads indicate falsetto singing for tenors and basses. -Grace notes are on beat. -These crooked beams in the bass part indicate a honky, forced, and growl timbre. -Exact intonation is less important than timbre. -Baritones: DO NOT take the Eb up the octave, force out a a rough, fry sound Choir should be arranged L/R S B T A many sections in the work employ antiphonal interplay across the ensemble in this figuration

-A choppy, affected, forced, diaphragmatic vibrato should be employed by the solo soprano in various places. -For an example of the desired timbre, look up a recording of classic 20th-century French singer Edith Piaf.

-After singing the chord and holding for a while, one by one singers throughout the ensemble begin to make sss and shh sounds until the noise has spread across the entire group. -One singer per section should sustain the chord (taking a breath before the next bar), so 8 members of the group are left singing before fading out separately.

A mess of free/unmetered text/consonants/noise. -here, on pitch E, singing the words “Rather they gather in any order, as fast as possible.

A fade to niente.

-Low mouth noise, closed lip position, with a sss/shh blend of freely changing consonants, quietly, for about 8 seconds. -While making low sss/shh noise, singers should produce brief low-pitched rumblings in-between the low noise consonants of sss/shh, like trying to sing your lowest note with a consonant. -Gradually changing to deep blue noise (described below), with less and less low-pitched rumbles over time.

-All-encompassing deep blue noise produced by lifting your soft palate, like a big yawn, mouth in an oval shape, like saying “koo.” -Producing sound on both inhale and exhale, same closed-lip position, around 13 seconds. -Eventually fade out slowly into nothing.

Program Notes Blossoming from this stunning James Tate text and the eponymous creature Tate’s poetry is based on, the blue-footed booby, this work for a cappella chorus focuses on the gradually descending nature of the poetry and a slow drowning in the deepening shades of all-encompassing blue. The superfluous and jaunty nature of the first two stanzas, coupled here with a dose of pastiche, eventually and suddenly gives way to a heavy and austere descent, full of sensual sibilance in Tate’s slowly melting prose. Consonants and vowels blend together as the piece progresses, the blue muddling everything, until both are blurred as one and we’ve all been engulfed in a deep, sybaritic, ultramarine–an ode to my favorite animal, a rondo in blue. A quote from Tate: “I love my funny poems, but I’d rather break your heart. And if I can do both in the same poem, that’s the best. If you laughed earlier in the poem, and I bring you close to tears in the end, that’s the best. That’s most rewarding for you and for me too. I want ultimately to be serious, but I can’t help the comic part. It just comes automatically. And if I can do both, that’s what I’m after.” -Daniel Sabzghabaei (2017)
