Poem and Text Notes Shab-e yalda
Notes on the poem
A shadow casts across a closing sky where crowds will meet to bid the night good-bye. With hushed excitement, waiting now respite; in silence but for night hawks eerie cry.
“In Iran, the winter solstice has been celebrated for centuries and it is called Shab-e yalda, which refers to the birthday or rebirth of the sun. The Persians adopted their annual renewal festival from the Babylonians and incorporated it into the rituals of their own Zoroastrian religion. The occasion was celebrated in the festival of 'Daygan' dedicated to Ahura Mazda, the Lord of Wisdom. Fires would be burnt all night to ensure the defeat of the forces of Ahriman (principle Evil). To ensure the total victory of the sun that was essential for the protection of winter crops, there would be prayers to Mithra (Mehr) and feasts in his honour, since Mithra is the Eyzad (deity) responsible for protecting ‘the early morning light.’
This winter solstice fire will burn all night, with sparks cascading; messages in flight. Ensuring then, defeat of Ahriman with prayers to Mithra, bringing morning light A night of celebration to Daygan with festive food and dance, the night began. Their prayers ensure protected winter grain. They wait to see the new sun shine on man. Yalda triumphant, light our darkened plain, bring forth new life, your love with us remain. Yalda: re-birth, arise new sun on high. Shab-e yalda; our sun is born again.
This is my interpretation of the Festival of Shab-e yalda in the Persian form of an interlocking rubáiyát.” Patricia Little (2008) -More work by Patricia Little can be found at http://allpoetry.com/passim
Performance Notes -
-
-
Some percussive consonant sounds are utilized, notated with X-noteheads. Within each verse, there a plethora of quick tempo changes. o These should be closely observed to create the constant groove changes and exciting rhythmic contrasts that are vital to this work. o There should a constant anticipation throughout the performance for these moments of rhythmic activity and slightly faster, accentuated tempi. Mordents are to be performed as quick ornaments above the given pitch as so: There are quite a few augmented seconds in the piece, the conductor should make sure to note this and advise the ensemble of each interval relationship. There are two instances of feathered beaming for the trumpeter. o These show a gradual change in the speed of the given gesture. In the first example, going from 8ths to 32nds in the space of a dotted-half note. The second, going from 8ths to trill speed in the space of a dotted half note. The trumpeter will need a mute. o Preferably a bucket mute. For the ending section with the trumpeter holding a high Bb very quietly, the conductor may take a slightly quicker tempo to ensure the player is able to hold the high, quiet Bb for the entirety of the gesture.
c.a. 4 minutes
Program Notes This festive winter anthem for chorus and trumpet is an exploration of the Persian holiday Shab-e Yaldā which celebrates the winter solstice and is often referred to as the “longest night.” During this festival, families gather together to eat food (especially red fruits like watermelon and pomegranate, symbolizing dawn/flame/rebirth/new life/etc.), drink, make long burning fires (or light candles), and read Hafez late into the night. My setting of this wonderful poem by Patricia Little (which fittingly and beautifully takes the form of an interlocking rubáiyát, a Persian poetic form popularized by Omar Khayyám) aims to capture the excitement and general jovial atmosphere of the so-called “longest night,” and embrace the mysticism behind the holiday. Throughout the work, there are a plethora of subtle tempo changes that occur. I find these changes mimic the erratic nature of a burgeoning fire, embers tossing and tongues erupting, unable to be pinned down into one, constant state. The trumpet too participates in this excitement, personifying the various mystic entities associated with the Festival of Yaldā. After the presentation of the first two stanzas and various shades of word painting, the trumpeter has a short solo which brings us to the third stanza and a time for reflection, followed by a triumphant conclusion and a contemplative vision of the coming year. -Daniel Sabzghabaei (2015)
