Welcome to Athlone Institute of Technology “For me, Athlone Institute of Technology was a life-changing experience. What Our Graduates Say “For me, Athlone Institute of Technology was a life-changing experience. I received an exceptional education, had wonderful lecturers, and made memories and friendships that will stay with me forever. The best advice I could give any student considering this course is to go for it. Study and work hard and don’t be afraid to use your colleagues’ experience to your advantage to help you progress through the ranks.“
Damien Harnett
General Manager, Savoy Hotel, Limerick. Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Tourism and Hospitality Management
“My degree was challenging but extremely rewarding and allowed me to explore and discover the areas that best complimented my personality and ability. The course material was delivered by knowledgeable and enthusiastic lecturers in a small classroom setting which gave me the confidence to express my ideas and opinions. Learning wasn’t just confined to the classroom either. Lecturers actively encouraged out of class learning and went above and beyond to organise class trips and other field activities.”
Jessica Hevican
Trainee Accountant, Grant Thornton. Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Business and Law (AL851)
“I picked the course because it was very hands-on and had a lot of practical aspects along with some soft skills like management and communication. As I progressed through the ranks, it was the non-technical things that I picked up while learning how to code that stood to me. Things like teamwork, presentation skills, report writing, leadership. Also, learning how to work with people that you don’t necessarily get along with. I learned a lot about group dynamics and how to get the best from a team.”
Jane Reilly
Vice President of Product Development, Ark Energy. Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Software Engineering
What Our Students Say “I was always good with numbers but wasn’t sure how to put it into practice in the real world. In the summer of 2015, I had a meeting with an AIT lecturer who encouraged me to consider accounting. I enrolled in the 2-year Accounting Technician programme which I successfully completed before applying to the BA (Hons) in Accounting where I was able to advance into the second year of the degree. Accounting is a challenging field, but the lecturers here are extremely supportive and helpful.“
Jessica O’Brien
Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Accounting (AL852)
“The course uses enquiry-based learning to prepare you for a career in health microbiology, food microbiology and quality control. In third year, you’ll get an opportunity to go out on placement gaining real-world experience in the field, something that will stand to you when finding gainful employment as a graduate. This degree was created in response to a skills gap in industry and, as such, is producing the kind of highly specialised graduates that employers are crying out for. The emphasis on this and practical lab work means that my classmates and I are better prepared for life after graduation.
Kevin Temple
Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Microbiology (AL839)
“My degree has given me a comprehensive grounding in the wide variety of specialisms in the software development space. It covers everything from how to build mobile applications, web development and digital media, to software development and databases. Some people have this ridiculous perception that women can’t ‘do STEM’, something I take great pleasure in dispelling every day. In excelling in my field, I hope I’m showing other women that they can and should have a seat at the table.”
Chloe Travers
Bachelor of Science in Software Development with Mobile Apps and Connected Devices (AL705)
ISSE Student Engagement
87% Our students say their academic experience is excellent. AIT’s ISSE rate is the highest in Ireland at 87%.
Students studying at Athlone Institute of Technology are the most satisfied in Ireland, according to The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019. The Good University Guide, now in its 17th year, is Ireland’s only league table ranking the country’s 21 higher education institutes against one another. This student satisfaction rating comes off the back of a nationwide analysis, called the Irish Survey of Student Engagement (ISSE), which looks at nine aspects of the student experience, including: effective teaching practices, higher order learning, reflective and integrative learning, learning strategies, student-faculty interaction, overall quality of interactions, a supportive academic environment, collaborative learning and quantitative reasoning.
The institute has consistently performed well in each of these areas, topping the list in collaborative learning and quality of interactions. The awardwinning institute, which took home the accolade The Sunday Times ‘Institute of the Year’ in 2018, continues to enjoy the highest ISSE student response rate nationally . This is the first year The Sunday Times Good University Guide has taken the views of students into account since ISSE’s inception in 2013. Previously, this information fed into sector-level reports only but was introduced as a data point in keeping with international ranking and best practice norms.
