01 Dharavi Research Project Site Dharavi, Mumbai, India

Project Information To explore and understand the issues arising from attempting to upgrade informal settlements. And to celebrate the intricate social, political & cultural dynamics within these settlements.

Project Type Individual Research Project. Theoretical study

Dharavi along with the greater Mumbai area started of as a fishing village in the 1800s. Dharavi was one of many neighbourhoods at the time welcoming a large wave of migrants. Growth of Dharavi (Right) from 1800s to 1933. Land allocation (Left) During its upgrading process by the Mumbai City Council. 4

Incremental Growth in PREVI social housing development, Lima, Peru (Left) Similar to projects across the world, residents in Dharavi have shaped their communities and buildings to suit their daily activities. Buildings line a central artery in which life and commerce takes place. Incremental building allows residents to space out the cost of upgrading their residences over a period of time

5

Incremental building allows allows the space to adapt and mold to the ever changing programme and needs of its inhabitants. (Top Left) Shows possible growth stages of a residence in an informal settlement. (Top Right) shows variation in frontages despite starting off with a similar base building, residents can adapt and customise their residences to their preference and needs. (Right) Section through Dharavi visualised, communities work together, craftsmen consolidate and spaces are used multi-functionally.

6

(Top Left) Houses in informal settlements are often mixed-used. Combining residential and commericial spaces. On top of that these houses often grow in relation to neighbouring buildings and are constructed to celebrate the proximity with their neighbours. Allowing for internal circulation even within houses and courtyard spaces that can be used by residents in the vicinity. (Top Right) Shows a visualisation of a common informal settlement. Amenities in the community are shared. 7

02 Fabric Pavilion Site Buchanan Street, Glasgow, United Kingdom

04 Biomimicry Site Johor, Malaysia

Project Information Project was inspired by the ‘reveal & conceal’ of the mosquito’s probicus. By learning from nature to inform a new design language for future refugees in the S.E.A region. Where the new life will be influenced by tidal forces.

Project Type Individual Research Project. Theorectical Proposal

16

Dwellings (bottom) and places of work and leisure (floating) are seperated by walkways which will only be traversible when the tide is low (evening & morning) and the paths become parallel with the entrances down on the seabed. 17

A careful study of the systems of the mosquito. reveal the timid nature in its probiscus and life cycle. Revealing in times of use and maturity and conceal in times of vulnerability. By using models to analyse the form of this pattern i was able to create an informed system to help refugees fleeing persecution.

05 Internships 05.1 Internship @ Superstructure Internship Aim Task was to create a chair that could be easily fabricated and cut using CNC machinery. The chair could not use screws or nails.

Collaborators Fellow Interns, Charlotte Chan and Faraz Farhan

Contibutions Project lead, in charge of design, prototyping, fine tuning and troubleshooting. Learnt CNC software and fabrication streamlining.

20

Similar to IKEA’s flatpack system our team used a nesting software to create the most compact cut to reduce wood wastage. Optimisation of the cut depth and direction of cutting edge were also essential to minimise post-cut clean up. Wood glue was used for final delivery but system was designed to function without.

05.2 Internship @ Hygge Interior Design Internship Aim My job was to assists the lead designer mainly with AutoCAD Drawings. But i was also involved in various site visits, client meetings, material selection, quality checks, carpentry installations etc.

Contributions Improving CAD drawing workflow, Site measurements, Carpentry Details Drawing (see next page)
