COLOR THEORY FOR THE LITTLE ONES Why Are Children Drawn To Bright Colour? Colour provides a bright side to childhood and it’s fascinating to understand why they are so enamored with it. Colour is a big part of their world. The playful, visually stimulating variations of ‘reflected light’ that we see as ‘colour’ provides a dose of happy energy like that of a child. Bright colour aligns with their energy - young kids are drawn to it and desire playful interaction with it. They play with colour like playing with toys. Like the joy of a kaleidoscope they are exploring with an experimental curiosity about what colour means to them. Children interact with colour by exploring with their senses to understand it. We can relate colour to the taste of foods, sweet strawberries, bitter lime. We can respond to colour as an ‘alert’ such as red berries and bright yellow bee stripes. But if some colour is neither defined by taste, smell, touch or sound then it’s about the emotions generated by what we’re seeing. It’s hard to imagine a monochromatic world where so much precious detail of the story would be lost, we loose the energy of colour. We often take colour for granted, but colour provides the deeper level of essence for our emotions. It can serve as our communicator or storyteller.
