LIGHT FESTIVAL A story about the machine that is Edinburgh, working away without anyone knowing. Beneath the roads and within the walls the cogs are always turning.

WHAT IS STEAMPUNK? Steampunk digital art by Alex Broeckel, Germany.
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialised Western civilisation during the 19th century. Steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk

This particular image is a good example due to the large octopus being a machine, it is quite obviously a fantasy world but it has a certain wonder too it as you instantly recognize that it is an octopus. When you look closer it becomes clear that it is a machine with a huge amount of detail and thought put into how the machine would move and work. The great thing about steampunk is that the machinery doesn’t need an explanation, you just have to accept that it works when most of the time it would be completely impossible. http://coolvibe.com/2010/steampunk-octopus/

why STEAMPUNK? Atmosphere
Steampunk tends to be relatively dark and mysterious, a particularly intense atmosphere could be created within the festival which would get people talking about their experience and get more people interested.

In the center of the city is 'The Heart' which powers the whole city. It's filled with cogs and mechanical devices, feeding the city with hundreds of steam filled pipes.

Unique Steampunk is a unique theme which a lot of people won’t know about. When people first see something in a steampunk theme I imagine they will consider it to be interesting and worth looking at.
Story
The story which my festival idea is based around which involves people getting an insight into the machine that is Edinburgh. Steampunk fits this story perfectly and will add an interesting feel to the whole festival.

fESTIV AL Overall idea within the theme Beneath the city that we can see, Edinburgh has a heart. It’s heart is filled with light which is pure energy. This energy is what allows the city to run, it is the catalyst for progression within the city and motivates everyone through the machinery which we cannot see. This festival will give people an insight into the machinery within every part of the city and how it pushes people forward, all of the machinery will have a positive goal and should leave people feeling inspired and motivated. A key aspect of the festival is to give new light to some of Edinburgh’s forgotten spaces but also to lift the spirits of people as christmas and new year will have just passed. Designers looking to contribute a peice to this festival are urged to take on a particular sub-theme depending on which close their installation is involved with.
pumps fictional motivation into the cities air. How the light is transported throughout the city, the light being the cities power and energy. Time and any way of showing how important it is to the city and it’s people. The smaller closes in the festival will show the energy escaping from the walls and any other locations within the close, these closes will be a build up and explanation of the overall story. Finally there will be installations illustrating the cities machine heart beating and pumping out light. The follwing pages will break the closes down into which sub-theme they fall under. The numbers will indicate which sub-theme the close falls under.
The sub-themes are all related to the over all theme involving Edinburgh as a working machine, they include any positive attitude machines and contraptions, such as a motivation machine which

The smaller closes will just involve smaller installations which express the light trying to escape from within the walls and surroundings.

Target Audience The target audience will be fairly specific, people between the ages on 18 to 27 will be the most likely to come along, the most likely people will be arts students who would find the idea of any light festival worthwhile to go and look at. However older people and middle aged couples could possibly find the festival interesting and worth seeing. It will attract a more cultured audience who are intruigued by new things and different ideas, the theme is relatively dark but with the intent of creating an experience of wonder and inspiration with the audience. Both male and female genders will walk round and the majority of people will be students. Any arts festival will tend to attract students, when the festival is on there won’t be a huge number of tourists as it is just after Christmas and not the sort of time people will be looking to travel. Due to this the majority will be local students.

research Inspiration for possible installations
This is a good example of inspiration, although the theme of this festival will be darker, it is still the aim to create a sense of wonder and delight. This peice was created in an underpass by Bill Fitzgibbon with the goal of creating life in a forgotten space.

Some peices come together. interesting effects could be created. An installation down some sort of corridor which is a similar location to our festival. The installations will be in quite enclosed locations, due to this perspective could be involved depending on what angle you are viewing the installation from.
http://www.jamesclar.com/work/ A powerful way of using shadows, through this technique of projecting light outwards through a template for the shadows. This could be used to really change a space and create some interesting patterns.

POSTER
18
Possible poster idea which would stand out slightly more due to the brighter white. The white possibly takes away from the theme and gives a false impression of what the festival will include. The street within the poster is Carubber’s Close which will feature in the festival, the image was slightly edited in photoshop to give a clear idea of the feel and theme of the festival. Although the experience should be of wonder I thought the underlying steampunk, dark feel should be clear.
