RETHINKING THE KAZIN .

The aim of this proposal is to rethink the way people look at the Kazin tal-Banda. It also aspires to investigate the relationship between the commercial and the cultural, and how these can work in symbiosis.

01_BUSINESS PLAN

The project is fuelled by the commercial activities - which in turn are directly linked to the local and cultural traditions.

The space is revived by providing a stage for performances which are usually only enjoyed once a year during the feast. The commercial, being split into the indoor and outdoor areas, allow for a flexible management of the two. The band club is given the possibility to either operate both the bar and restaurant, or just operate one of the two and rent out the other Stripped down to its bare elements the project tackles the possibility of the cultural feeding the commercial, and a mutually benefitting relationship which this has the potential to evoke.

INITIAL OBSERVATIONS .

02_INVESTIGATING THE EXISTING

The first stage of the project involved undertaking an extensive analysis of the surrounding developments as well as the existing building itself. Relevant issues which should be noted at this point include the existing adjoining third party properties as well as the current construction on the neighbouring property on the rear side of the development.

Therefore prior to the materialisation of concept to form, it was observed that third part walls had the potential to be tower over the courtyard, providing an incentive to solve this privacy issue through an intervention in line with the aforementioned business plan. The existing structure and layout was investigated through a comprehensive survey, taking note of current lighting and power systems already in place. The output of this analysis was documented in this chapter through a series of site drawings and plans.

3.1. BAR AND LOUNGE .

03_CONCEPTUAL PROPOSALS

The idea behind the retrofitting of the downstairs bar, was to pursue a connection between the setting of the commercial space and the symbol of the Marija Annunzjata band club. From a business aspect, the attraction of the public through the display of the cultural was at the core of the design of this space, as well as the project as a whole.

From a design aspect, the area revolves around a pixelated Terazzo texture, acting as a backdrop for what is to serve as a social space by all means. The transparent partition dividing the bar from the seating space was constructed out of steel frame is to showcase a selection of the band club’s trophies currently located within the upstairs room. In doing so, the trophies act as a ‘decoration’ of sorts which inherently links the space to the very idea and achievements of the band club and the cultural significance it brings with it.

ROOM T R OPHY

3. 2. .

Traditionally, the trophy room houses memorabilia which is collected by the band club throughout the years. Most trophy rooms, including the existing trophy room at the Marija Annunzjata Band Club, feature a selection of cabinetry with a hotpotch of objects cluttering the shelves, combined with overpowering decor which overthrows the delicate nature of some of the collectables.

The proposed trophy room will attempt to organise the memorabilia in order to better represent the band club’s active history, showcased as part of a timeline. The interior will feature glass encased, rich walnut cabinetry, enveloped by a warm blue, representing the band club’s colours, which extends onto the walls up until window lintel level. Treated stonework will be exposed above this level, paying homage to the traditional Maltese building technique

3.3. ADMINISTRATION OFFICE

The initial task which this area dictated was its restricted width. In order for the administration office to become a usable space, there was the need to increase the perception of size of the space. This problem was resorted by the flooding of natural light into the space through a long skylight installed above the room. The provision of natural light cannot be underestimated.

Therefore the mind-set with which the design of this room was tackled, was the utilisation of material application and colour combinations to enhance the perception of the size of the space. The colour yellow was instrumental in the setting of an ambience of concentration and focus, complementing the brightness and resulting perceived size of the space itself.

3.4. BATHROOMS .

In the overall layout design for the project, the provision of adequate facilities was of paramount importance. Therefore, accessibility was key in determining the position of the bathrooms on both levels of the band club.

Both areas are to be located on top of each other, allowing for the use of the same system of sewage and drainage pipes. The areas incorporate 1 regular WC unit and 1 regular sized unit on each floor, as well as a storage closet to be used as preferred by the users of the space. The units are separated by gypsum partitions clad in walnut cladding contrasting off of the Terrazzo flooring. Hard, reflective materials were used within the spaces, providing the image of hygienic-friendly surfaces.

3.5. PERFORMANCE SPACE .

The link between the old and the new. In line with the business plan, the link between the 2 interior spaces was manifested in a connecting bridge with a purpose which was not restricted solely to accessibility. The frosted glass bridge may be considered as feasible when considered as a performance space for the members of the ‘banda’ as well as other performers hired as entertainment.

Constructed out of a simply supported steel frame, the bridge is covered with non-slip frosted glass sections. Thus allowing light to penetrate the space beneath as well as allowing a somewhat transparent view for the ‘audience’ in the pizzeria below. The well-lit space is complimented by the natural elements, an olive tree provides shade during the hotter days.

The extension is projected to offer a high standard multipurpose room, with adjustable integrated sound and light systems to offer flexibility between different groups.

The three different streams of music, dance and theatre will be able to make use of space by renting on demand, therefore offering the Kazin an additional income, while diversifying the local exhibition of talent. This, together with the implementation of the bridge and the restaurant below, will create a strong connection between the members of the kazin and other groups forming part of a performance group and the daily local visiting the restaurant.

3.7. REHEARSAL SPACE

The integration of diverse music activities was identified to be a strong characteristic of the Kazin, exhibiting the integration of the local talent in the village Festa, fundraising activities, symposiums, and other hostings. Having recognized the potWidentified the lack of space for rehearsal, an extension was proposed to house such spaces.
