Kasper Rønn & Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen Minimalism is not a modern style. Minimalism has been the norm in many cultures all over the globe since the beginning of civilization. People have strived continually for material p ove r t y a s a wa y t o i n n e r l u x u r y. R e d u c t i o n a n d p e r f e c t i o n have been the main goal for both craftsmen and inventors – because avoiding the irrelevant meant emphasising the important. All too often people think of design in terms of added grandness. But it is often the plain or the reduced that is the most striking. Jonas: “But the main inspiration to the design comes from something more rough, namely French industrial chairs and also the classic traditions of Danish cabinet making. And actually the whole assembly system is inspired from Chinese and Korean architecture, especially known for using wood wedges and wood pins to assemble their parts instead of using nails and screws”. Kasper: “So it’s really a multi design – it’s multi functional, multi national and multi inspirational”.

Designed to match the unique Nordic ways In 2011 Norm Architects designed a special series of dinnerware. A s e r i e s t h a t ex p r e s s t h e p u r i t y, s i m p l i c i t y, a n d h o n e s t y s o p a r t i c u l a r l y c h a r a c t e r i s t i c o f t h e N o r d i c wa y. It was their profound admiration of one of Denmark’s most prominent painters, Vilhelm Hammershoi, and the unique feel of the crisp and pristine Nordic winds which served as the main inspiration for the colour palette of New Norm Dinnerware. And if you look c l o s e l y, yo u w i l l f i n d , t h a t a l l c o l o u r s i n t h e s e r i e s a r e c a r e f u l l y hand picked to match, and emphasize, the colours of Nordic dishes. The “White” tone will suit more subtle dishes with fewer but darker colours, and the raw plate of cut out slate will provide a powerful contrast to any setting, while adding a feel of the rough and windy Scandinavian moods. The variations of colours, surfaces, and compositions also tell stories of the changing seasons and the use of seasonal ingredients: spring rhubarb, summer strawberries and autumn apples. Uhm ... Danish autumn apples. There’s nothing quite like them.

Luxury for Posh Birds M e n u ce l e b ra tes t h e l e g a cy o f M i es va n d e r Ro h e w i t h a B a rce l o n a bird pavilion; an avant-garde treat for lucky garden birds. We c rea te d t h e ava n t - g a rd e b i rd p av i l i o n i n h o n o u r o f t h e legendary designer Mies van der Rohe. The Pavilion is a combined birdbath and bird table, made from hardwood acacia and inspired by one of his absolute masterpieces – the renowned Barcelona Pavilion from the 1929 Expo. “Mies van der Rohe as an icon of modern architecture was the source of inspiration for this unique design. It is important for us to push boundaries and let originality rule - without limitations. A bird pavilion with style of this magnitude clears the road for even more original thinking,” says Bjarne Hansen, MENU ’ s C r e a t i v e D i r e c t o r. The new and avant-garde garden feature is an arresting and decorative manifestation that pampers birds with a place to both eat and go for a dip. The birdbath - a beautiful black basin that highlights the signature acacia wood - can easily be separated from the table, cleaned and refilled. The bird table is elegantly placed under the roof of the pavilion where the bird feed can be placed securely on two spikes.

What’s your favourite city? I would have to say Copenhagen. Copenhagen contains a whimsical mixture of people, cultures, bridges, and both very old and modern architecture, bicycles everywhere, promenades and waterfronts, narrow cobblestone streets and cosy cafes and shops. In particular I like The Opera and The National Museum. I love Copenhagen´s diversity both in terms of architecture, atmosphere and inhabitants. Did you have a childhood hero? Cinderella, I just love the tale of Cinderella, in spite of all the difficulties she manages, she survives, she prevails - and she gets the beautiful prince in the end. There has to be a happy ending to a great tale. Te l l u s a b o u t t h e d e s i g n y o u h a v e d o n e f o r M e n u . T h e m a i n i d e a behind Stitches was to create a series of quality products for everyday use that would provide the user with a positive visual ex p e r i e n ce . M y a i m wa s to d es i g n a l i n e t h a t wa s s i m p l e a n d clean in the overall shapes, yet classical and stylish in its depth, this being highlighted by the small details in the recognizable patterns - taken from the Danish tradition of cross-stitching. The line is crafted in porcelain and decorated by utilizing the unique paper decoration technique, transfer print, allowing a broad range of colours and patterns to be applied to the various items of the line.

For the love of patient grandmothers Cross-stitching is a big part of the Danish handicraft tradition, a n d s o m e t h i n g c l o s e l y t i e d t o t h e f a m i l y. M o s t o f u s l e a r n e d from our unbelievably patient grandmothers - or our even more patient home craft teachers who got the questionable joy of teaching 30 kids at a time. But they did. And they made sure we followed the right patterns and tucked the thread neatly on the backside. C r o s s - s t i t c h i n g i s s o m e t h i n g y o u d o t o l e t y o u r m i n d w a n d e r, t o let go of thoughts about work and busy times, and to just be right where you are. And we think this is what the world needs right now, a little collective step on the brakes. Some time to think, breathe and evaluate how we want to live our lives. It is our hope, that gathering around Stiches will be this kind of brake for you. A time to slow down, turn of the noise, relax with your friends, kids or family and focus on just being right where you are. Present.

T h e Ve n t u r i e f f e c t Wine is a living organism, and younger varieties benefit from oxygen because it neutralises the acidic tannins and opens up its aroma and full taste. Naturally balance carafe, opens when poured Designer Jakob Wagner started with the classic bottle - gave it a soft, rectangular shape and finished with a stainless steel and s i l i c o n e c o l l a r. The collar protects the glass and catches any drops that run down the outside of the carafe – and it also conceals a discrete lid that opens automatically when pouring. The lid keeps bugs, pollen, and leaves out of the carafe when you use it outdoors; and it also ensures that ice cubes, lemon wedges, mint leaves, b e r r i es a n d w h a teve r e l s e yo u m i g h t u s e to f res h e n u p yo u r wa te r remain inside the carafe. “ I l i k e h a v i n g a n a t u r a l b a l a n c e i n m y d e s i g n s ” , s a y s J a k o b W a g n e r. ” T h e f i n i s h i n g to u c h a t t h e to p o f t h e ca ra fe i s a g o o d o f exa m p l e of this. Aerated and ready to serve in less than 2 minutes If you are among those who prefer a more rounded glass of wine, it is necessary to pour the wine into a carafe to aerate it first. The actual aeration process is untraditional and worth seeing, so your guests will probably enjoy witnessing the wine breather in action. Place the bottle on the table and attach the carafe to the bottleneck. Then, carefully turn the bottle over and allow the wine to flow into the carafe. The wine breather spreads the wine so that it splashes through the neck of the carafe and flows down its sides, providing the maximum possible surface area. T u r n o v e r, a e r a t e a n d s e r v e The wine can be served in the stylish carafe, but if you prefer to have the original bottle on the table, just turn the carafe over again and the wine flows back into the bottle! The aeration takes less than 2 minutes, during which time the wine develops just as much as it would have after many months in the bottle. T h i s p rov i d es a b e t te r ta s te ex p e r i e n ce a n d , a s a n a d d e d b o n u s , you are able to enjoy the spectacular aeration process and still serve the wine in its original bottle.
