ABOUT COOL2LEARN ABOUT US Cool2Learn was born out of the love of parents that wanted to stimulate their first born to provide them with a firm educational foundation. We wanted to give our children the best advantage in live to succeed.

We recognised that it was quite difficult to find a variety of good quality educational products that would stimulate our children in the different development areas.

We started to do some research and it was not long before we bought our first products and other parents started to ask where we bought the products. Our love for our children turned onto a business where we can provide the same advantage to your child.

As our children grow so does our range as we do not only sell educational toys, we have them in our homes and is enjoyed by our children.

We are always open for ideas and will search for any product that you require that is not part of our range at the moment.

FINE MOTOR SKILL

Gross motor skills are larger movements your baby makes with his arms, legs, feet, or his entire body. So crawling, running, and jumping are gross motor skills.

Fine motor skills are small movements — such as picking up small objects and holding a spoon — that use the small muscles of the fingers, toes, wrists, lips, and tongue.

Each type of play has its own benefits for the developing mind of a young child, and while each is important, pretend play (otherwise known as imaginative or dramatic play) is becoming an increasingly popular component in toddler and preschool education.

An increasing amount of research continues to support play in early childhood development, and there are five primary forms or types of play in which children engage: locomotive, social, object, language and pretend play. Each type of play has its own benefits for the developing mind of a young child, and while each is important, pretend play (otherwise known as imaginative or dramatic play) is becoming an increasingly popular component in toddler and preschool education.

Dramatic play is defined by experts as a type of play where children assign and accept roles and act them out. For example, child who pretends to feed and rock a doll to sleep is engaging in dramatic play, or a child who pretends to fix a leaky faucet in the play kitchen is engaging in dramatic play.

This is a time for a child to pretend to be someone or something else, and while pretending may just look like “playing”, it is integral to the developmental learning process.

There are four primary areas under which children learn and develop through pretend play. They include: 

Intellectual – increase in skills such as problem solving, negotiating, creativity, organizing and planning, retelling familiar stories, application of newly gained knowledge, and mathematics



Physical – increase in skills such as gross and fin motor development, fitness, strength, and coordination



Social – development of skills such as sharing, taking turns, cooperation, negotiation, impulse control, delay gratification, and deal with disappointment



Emotional – increase in self esteem, pride and accomplishment, feeling of safety and protection, development of sense of self and individuality, and feelings or purpose

Experts agree that dramatic play is an integral part of a well rounded preschool program as it is healthy for early childhood development. Through dramatic play, children learn a myriad of skills. In fact, the Association of Childhood Education International has stated that play is a natural part of childhood development that cannot be replaced by adult interaction. This means that even adult instruction cannot replace the valuable experience children gain through play, specifically dramatic play. So, let the children pretend!

BENEFITS OF OUTDOOR PLAY The outdoors is the very best place for pre-schoolers to practice and master emerging physical skills.

It is in the outdoors that children can fully and freely experience motor skills like running, leaping, and jumping. It is also the most appropriate area for the practice of ball-handling skills, like throwing, catching, and striking. And children can perform other such manipulative skills as pushing a swing, pulling a wagon, and lifting and carrying movable objects.

Additionally, it is in the outdoors that children are likely to burn the most calories, which helps prevent obesity, a heart disease risk factor that has doubled in the past decade. With studies showing that as many as half of American children are not getting enough exercise-- and that risk factors like hypertension and arteriosclerosis are showing up at age 5-- parents and teachers need to give serious consideration to ways in which to prevent such health problems. The outside is also important because the outdoor light stimulates the pineal gland, the part of the brain that regulates the "biological clock," is vital to the immune system, and makes us feel happier.

The outdoors has something more to offer than just physical benefits. Cognitive and social/ emotional development are impacted, too. Outside, children are more likely to invent games. As they do, they're able to express themselves and learn about the world in their own way. They feel safe and in control, which promotes autonomy, decision-making, and organizational skills. Inventing rules for games (as preschoolers like to do) promotes an understanding of why rules are necessary.

communication skills and vocabulary (as they invent, modify, and enforce rules).



We can't underestimate the value of the aesthetic development promoted by being outside. Aesthetic awareness refers to a heightened sensitivity to the beauty around us. Because the natural world is filled with beautiful sights, sounds, and textures, it's the perfect resource for the development of aesthetics in young children.

Pre-schoolers learn much through their senses. Outside there are many different and wonderful things for them to see (animals, birds, and green leafy plants), to hear (the wind rustling through the leaves, a robin's song), to smell fragrant flowers and the rain-soaked ground, to touch (a fuzzy caterpillar or the bark of a tree), and even to taste (newly fallen snow or a raindrop on the tongue). Children who spend a lot of time acquiring their experiences through television and computers are using only two senses (hearing and sight), which can seriously affect their perceptual abilities.

Finally, what better place than the outdoors for children to be loud and messy and boisterous? Outside they can run and jump and yell, and expend some of the energy that is usually inappropriate – and even annoying – indoors.

BENEFITS OF READING AND WRITING Many people believe that children learn to read and write in kindergarten or first grade; however, the foundation for literacy skills is laid years before children enter school. Emergent literacy, much like any other cognitive skill, begins at birth. During the early years, children develop competency in language and literacy not through a set curriculum, but through interactions and experiences with the adults around them. Young children benefit when teachers are both knowledgeable and intentional in how they support and nurture early language and literacy.

When we use the term “early,” or “emergent literacy,” we are referring to what children know about communication, language (verbal and nonverbal), reading, and writing before they can actually read and write. It encompasses all the experiences children have had with conversation, stories (oral and written), books, and print (Parlakian, 2003). Early literacy skills unfold simultaneously as children master other domains of development, such as social emotional skills. In fact, the emotional bonds between young children and their families, other adults, and peers influence children’s motivation and potential to learn (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). It is through positive, meaningful relationships and experiences that children gain confidence in their ability to explore and learn from the world around them.

Similarly, research indicates that family expectations and involvement are also important factors influencing later school achievement in young children. Families who support and believe in their children’s ability to learn are promoting their school readiness (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). Likewise, teacher expectations have also been shown to influence children’s school achievement (Bamburg, 1994).

For young children, literacy, language, and culture are interrelated. Through literacy experiences, children see the values and beliefs of their culture presented in a positive and nurturing light. Language is also an important expression of culture. As young children acquire their home language, they are mastering the knowledge and skills that form the basis of their cultural identity. For this reason, it is important for young children to be supported in maintaining their home language, especially when they are receiving care in English-language settings.
