MEE T LUKE FRY. ARCHITECTURE & INTERIOR DESIGN
Luke Fry was born and raised with construction and design in his veins. Growing up in country Victoria, Luke’s father has his own construction company. Whilst Luke was groomed from a young age to join the family business, his creative side lead him to study Interior Design followed by a degree in Architecture. A self-motivated high achiever, Luke’s talents and entrepreneurial background paved the way for him setting up his own design practice in St Kilda. Explains Luke, “I don’t really restrict myself to any particular design style, but if you were to define my work it would lend itself to a contemporary aesthetic. We focus on keeping the forms of the building we design really simple in terms of lines and spaces. We use honest and proven materials and a solid construction process – brick, concrete, stone, timber, steel and glass.” “Our focus is on new builds and multi-residential renovations – it’s where we truly believe we can offer so

much from an architectural and interior design perspective. However we do a number of structural and interior renovations in inner Melbourne, typically for a Victorian, Edwardian or Art Deco house - where we draw elements from the original architectural style then reform them with a contemporary twist to suit today’s lifestyle. We don’t try and replicate details, but we use them as inspiration. The outcome is very different from designing a new build where there is no history.” Luke has also recently launched a new start up which is shaking up the world of architecture and real estate. ‘Archicheck’ is a simple but revolutionary platform. It connects property buyers with architects who provide honest and independent professional advice on the potential of any property withing 48 hours – including information on council planning controls, building regulations and design and construction pitfalls.

Armadale is an inner-city suburb of Melbourne. Bordering Toorak which has long been regarded Melbourne's most prestigious area, Armadale is considered one of Melbourne's premier blue chip areas. The main thoroughfare of High Street is home to leading restaurants, galleries, antiques shop, boutiques and cafes. Located in the heart of Armadale, this unique architectural project is the home of a young, design focused couple and their three young children. The owners wanted to achieve a contemporary reinvention of their large Edwardian home. A considerable undertaking in terms of design execution and construction, we had to rework the original spaces, add a double story rear extension and re-model the outdoor spaces to create a cohesive, functional home. In terms of the interior spaces, we wanted to create a soft, refined and relaxed feel that juxtaposed with the bold, robust and active new exterior form – a hard shell concept constructed from concrete and zinc that is both familiar noteworthy. 10
A R M A DA LE H OUS E
Ultimately there had to be a balance between the old and the new, a distinction between these areas that simultaneously tied them together, seamlessly and harmoniously. Our approach was to take advantage of and further enhance the large existing volumes. It was important to create greater functionality and a controlled connection between spaces and allow the house to perform more effectively for the young family. Longevity of the design was integral to the brief, allowing the family to live and grow with the property for the long term. The property had to work as effectively in 20 years’ time so highly considered space planning was key to a successful outcome. High quality materials were used to establish a paredback, luxurious feeling and create a calming environment. The edited palette featured only two materials, their innate surfaces providing the final colour, texture and tones. The raw, unpainted beauty of concrete rendered walls, timber and zinc formed the exterior. Refined Japanese tile provide detail within the steel 11
reveal windows that extrude past the façade. This influenced the soft colour tones and refined interiors styling to complement the original period features of the home – maintaining, complementing and subtly referencing the cornices, skirting boards and architraves in a contemporary way. Transforming the curved staircase to highlight the link between the two levels created a striking key feature of the home that highlights the period details. The two-metre circular skylight creates a strong design element that allows light into the central space. The re-orientation of the site from east-west to a north-facing aspect opened up the home as much as possible. As a result of extending the house by hugging the southern boundary, the living spaces, the pool and outdoor living zones are bathed in natural light. The sustainable building performance of a project is a key factor in our designs, successfully incorporating technology, solar panels and highly advanced materials to achieve an environmentally sound outcome.

TESTIMONIAL “Luke had a great creative ability to conceptualise the space and functionality we required to fit our family’s lifestyle. Throughout the whole project we had Luke beside us to ensure no detail was missed and that a high end design finish was achieved in every area of the build. A seaside resort on the Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria, Torquay is the gateway to the Great Ocean Road and is well known worldwide for its stunning surf beaches. The coastal project redefines what a ‘beach house’ can be, in its aesthetic, function and context. The site provided a defining element. Located within a golf club housing estate at the end of a cul de sac, the north/east facing site enjoys complete privacy with no other building in sight. The architectural approach of the renovation of this unique home was to take full advantage of and further embrace the natural landscape and ensure all spaces had a strong connection to and protection from the surrounding environment. We saw it as paramount to make the most of the 180-degree uninterrupted views across nearby wetlands and sand dunes. Functionality and ultimately longevity were at the forefront of the brief for the retired couple so they could fully utilise the house now and in the future. The unique context of the site was taken into full consideration and each ground floor room has an immediate connection to the landscape. 28

The consciously developed floor plan allows the couple to use their home as a single-level dwelling by ensuring all communal living spaces are on the ground floor, as well as the master bedroom. The upper level can be used independently making ideal set for the owner’s children, grandchildren and guests. Celebrating the inherent quality of simple construction materials like artisanal bricks and concrete informed not only the material palette but also the overarching design. This exploration of honest and proven materials formed an edited and masculine palette that created a refined, simple and texturally layered space. Raw brick walls in the living zones and entry foyer play a pivotal role by creating a pared-back sense of warmth whilst greatly enhancing the sustainable aspects of the building. Externally, deep-hued masonry walls stand against a bare-stone clad second level which reference the segregation between the two zones. On a sustainable level the orientation of the house was highly considered and was built to maximise solar gain and be protected from cold prevailing winds. High levels of insulation and high-quality materials endure the property will perform well in terms of sustainability and will stand the test of time.

St Kilda East is one of the more diverse and densely populated suburbs of Melbourne. Quiet and residential, it is quite different from the adjacent suburb of St Kilda, however, the area around Carlisle Street is very diverse with a strong arts, alternative and indie community. This original Art Deco property has been home to the same owners for 25 years and they raised their family here without doing any modifications over that time. Deciding it was time to update the home, the owners brief was based on improving the dark and under-utilised spaces - primarily the ground floor kitchen, meals and laundry zone and adding an additional bathroom and. It was also important to create more effective indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces. At the forefront of our design proposition was making greater use of the natural light by considering the site orientation. The house needed to reflect the way they live today, and the lifestyles of the family members. The considered architectural solution to fulfill the brief and work with the existing site conditions was focused on adding a sense of cultural value, to not only enrich the house itself but to also reflect and enhance the neighbourhood character. The execution of the highly detailed design and the craftsmanship of the construction set a benchmark for best practice in extending the relevance of a period home without any extensive and expensive demolition. The material specification was carefully selected to be sympathetic to the original Art Deco nature of the

house and simultaneously ensuring the aesthetic create a comfortable and refined home. The square steel extension responded to the original circular and triangular structure as a recognisable primary form, executed in a highly detailed manner to develop the contemporary update. The light filled interior emulates the material and detail of the existing interior features to create a strong and seamless connection between new and old. This connection is further highlighted through timber joinery in the rear extension which showcases and reflects the original timber paneling at the front of the house. This original timber was in such beautiful condition and provided such a strong foundation for linking the two eras, and the resulting integration saw an implementation of this feature throughout the kitchens and bathrooms. An unexpected and very bold statement not usually seen in contemporary architecture, this pleasing juxtaposition completed a perfect outcome with light and dark materials and moody, inviting spaces. The original arches, the Japanese finger tiles, the dark marble bench tops and the rendered concrete walls accentuated and enhanced the original features making the old feel new again. 42

MANLY RESIDENCE, SYDNEY
Designing a brand-new home for a professional couple and their family in the idyllic coastal location of Manly in Sydney, the stunning ocean views to the rear of the property were paramount to the aesthetic response. Carefully considered space planning ensured maximum functionality with the open plan living and large sweeping
doors that allow for zoning as required. The colourful and tactile interior spaces paired with refined and minimal detailing complement the raw faรงade of brick, timber and concrete sheets. A strong sustainable focus was also at the forefront of our intent and was integral to the decision-making process.

CAUFIELD TOWNHOUSE
This multi-residential townhouse development is in the heart of Caufield and aimed to encompass the essence of luxury living. The architectural solution was one of constraint and consideration which, in response, adds cultural value to not only the house itself but enriches the neighbourhood character. The execution of this highly de-
tailed design and level of craftsmanship of construction sets a precedent for how best to design and build. A textural approach was taken when selecting the materials for this build; artisanal brick, timber batons and cobblestones. Lush planting makes this feel like an urban oasis.
