Welcome This mapping is meant to serve as a practical tool for companies in the Danish audio and sound technology sectors, seeking their way to initiate collaboration and engage themselves in China. It also represents an important milestone in the development of relations, trade, and collaboration between the two nations within the fields of audio and sound technology, which took its beginning in 2009.

7

The First Step: Signing Memorandum of Understanding 2010

The Beginning of a New Era

In 2010, China Audio Industry Association and the Danish Sound Innovation Network signed their first partnership agreement, a »Memorandum of Understanding«, to increase and support relations and exchange.

The next phase of audio collaboration between China and Denmark is beginning to take shape with several initiatives on both the Chinese and Danish side: China Audio City: The Governments of Huadu District and City of Guangzhou’s development of national, regional and local centres dedicated to the advancement of the Chinese audio sectors.

Since the signing of the agreement there have been 5 delegation visits, encompassing more than 70 participants and involving hundreds more in conferences, seminars and company visits, taking place both in China and in Denmark.

Discover Acoustics: »Invest in Denmark« program addressing and stimulating foreign investors in the audio sectors. Audio Promotion Program: By the Innovation Centre Denmark in Shanghai. China-Denmark Improving Sound Together: Program supported by the Danish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education, operated by the Danish Sound Innovation Network. These initiatives offer opportunities to increase and enforce the collaboration and mutual efforts.

Introduction

The Chinese audio sector started blooming during the 1970 and 1980’s as suppliers of components and later finished OEM products for the global markets as well as developers of products for a fast growing domestic market. The Chinese audio industries have developed excellent skills and unquestionable product quality during the last decades creating a solid platform for expansion and growth, now focussing on branding, design and best available technologies.

Strong Sectors with Complementary Core Competencies and Strengths A close look at the two national sectors reveals differences and opportunities for dynamic innovations. The legacy of the Danish audio industry and research sectors goes back more than 100 years, leaving remarkable footprints on the global map of sound, acoustics and audio. The Danish audio industry is still in the front in terms of knowhow, technologies and strong brands in the high ends of the value chains. However, it is also in need of new partnerships in order to maintain workplaces and expand its market share.

Danish Sound is convinced that the possibilities of mutual beneficial partnerships and collaboration are numerous. The inovation network is therefore looking forward to continue the development of a framework that can stimulate collaboration and exchange among the sectors of the two nations.

China: 233 Times Bigger than Denmark

Moving Up the Value Chain

China is officially named the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and is the world’s most-populous country with a population of over 1.3 billion people. The East Asian state covers approximately 9.6 million square kilometres (3.7 million square miles) in total area and is the world’s second-largest country by land area.

China’s success has primarily been due to its ability to manufacture as a low-cost producer. This is attributed to a combination of cheap labour, good infrastructure, relatively high productivity, favourable government policy, and a possibly undervalued exchange rate. In general we can observe a politically supported and targeted restructuring and reposition of the Chinese audio industry in the global market. The industry is moving from supplying components and finished OEM & ODM –products to foreign brands and companies, towards developing own designs, technologies (IPR) and products that have become global brands.

The People’s Republic of China is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party of China. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four directly controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (SARs); Hong Kong and Macau.

This implies a greater and more profound interest among Chinese audio companies in innovation and research.

The major industrial areas are situated around Beijing, Shanghai, Ningbo and the so-called Pearl River Delta, that covers Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Foshan. At the mouth of the delta you find Hong Kong, which is also a large area of trade and fairs.

Help at Hand This section gives you a brief introduction to the Danish Offices in China that are ready to assist Danish companies when entering the Chinese market

12

The Trade Council specializes in dealing with commercial issues including political factors. Good relations with authorities as well as knowledge about Chinese and international legislation are crucial on the Chinese market. Through its Global Public Affairs services The Trade Council can help companies identify, prioritize and liaise with key stakeholders, thus providing an overview and access to Chinese decision makers.

Innovation Centre Denmark By facilitating the entry of technology based Danish companies into the Chinese market and technology based Chinese companies into Denmark, Innovation Centre Denmark (ICDK) connects cutting edge Danish and Chinese entrepreneurs, investors, research institutions and universities to create cross-cultural businesses that drive innovation and deliver inspiration.

With offices in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chongquing and Hong Kong, the ITE team covers a large geographical area of China.

The commercial work of ICDK is primarily concentrated within two main fields: Counseling services to companies and Innovation Projects. Within these fields ICDK focuses on 3 distinct technology sectors: Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Clean Technology, and Life Sciences, where they advise and inspire Danish innovative entrepreneurs as well as tech-transfer offices looking to enter – or increase their presence – on the Chinese innovation scene.

DI Asia Base DI’s Own Man in China-concept was designed to give Danish companies a unique entrance to the Chinese market. By taking advantage of the comprehensive services offered by DI in Shanghai, your company is relieved of the Chinese hassle related to paperwork, taxes, HR, etc., and DI’s Danish expatriate personnel stationed in Shanghai eases the communication between the Danish headquarters and the Chinese employee. DI facilitates the recruitment process and hires the employee on behalf of your company on our Chinese business license - and the employee gets a work station within our office. In other words: DI handles everything from recruitment to registration and daily administration – and thus allows your company to focus exclusively on developing your business!

The Danish Trade Council Throughout the years, the Danish Trade Council has acquired extensive knowledge about the Chinese market and provided support to Danish companies. The ITE (Telecommunication and Electronics) team is one out of seven industry teams under The Trade Council. In order to provide clients with the best services possible, the ITE team focuses on seven key areas of which sound technologies and hi-fi products form one.

Companies & Enterprises in the Chinese Audio & Sound Sectors

Companies & Enterprises The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of specialization tendencies as well as geographic concentrations of the audio and sound technology industry in China.

18

Method

Fourth part is designed sound, where sound becomes a part of identity and branding, whether it is in shops and commercial areas or in company or product promotion and branding. The rapid growth of this sector reflects the tremendous impact that sound has on the brain and our perceptions; auditory stimuli can be as – or even more – efficient than visual. In this category we have chosen to place ‘advisory and consulting engineering’, covering the specialists offering advice on construction, city and infrastructure planning, machine and product acoustics.

The audio and sound technology sectors can be segmented in many ways. To create a comparable basis for both countries’ sectors, the following structure has been chosen. The mapping of sectors starts by displaying the electroacoustic sectors of audio, encompassing the home market & the pro-audio market, covering studio, broadcast and live sound products. This is followed up by an assessment of the digital media and communication sector, where sound technologies seem to have migrated in a large scale these years. The new formats and protocols of sound transmission and reception have moved sound and music out on mobile telephones, PC’s, docking stations, iPhones and iPods. We want sound to be part of our life, anywhere and anytime.

The fifth part focuses on assistive technologies, meaning medical devices such as hearing aids, or products used in the health sectors offering improved life quality via human sonic diagnostics and treatments, designed sound environments, and healing sound. In order to improve the clarity of this report, only the 100 largest companies based on annual turnover are included.

The mapping moves on to products and sectors where sound technologies have become increasingly important: Diagnostics and monitoring: Environment, noise, engines & machines, transportation -places and products where human beings must be protected, as well as objects and places where sound is the easiest way in. Products and industries that through sound technology can help define the status and state of a given object and thus help maintain and secure operations of important sectors in society.

Geographic Concentrations There are two main concentrations of audio manufacturing enterprises.

Guangdong

Zhejiang

Most of the companies within the Chinese audio and sound technology sectors are placed in the Guangdong Province. Especially the cities of Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Enping, and Zhongshan have high concentrations of audio-related enterprises.

Electromechanical industries are one of the main manufacturing sectors in Zhejiang. The province has been successful in recent years following their ÂťZhejiang-modelÂŤ which is based on prioritizing and encouraging entrepreneurship, an emphasis on small businesses responsive to the whims of the market amongst others.

Education & Research in the Chinese Audio & Sound Sectors

Education & Research This chapter provides an overview of the most important research units, advanced technology testing centres and higher education institutions. This is done in order to provide both Chinese and Danish companies as well as other organizations insights into the Chinese knowledge resources within acoustics, audio, digital signal processing etc. in order to ease the process of establishing new cross-sector collaborations.

42

Method

When examining universities and research institutions with the purpose of finding the most prominent within the Chinese audio & sound technology sectors, it is necessary first to define the knowledge base, which constitutes the very concept of the term Âťsound technologyÂŤ.

E.g. the DSP and advanced algorithms in combination with still more efficient computer chip technologies enable sound and signals to be processed, compressed, and transmitted through cables or via radio waves at unprecedented speed.

The basic of all audio and sound technology projects consist of 3 main areas: acoustics, transducers and signal processing. These classical technology areas all migrate into various product and market sectors.

Micro technologies within all components including the transducers make it possible for telephones and devices to shrink year by year, and still reproduce a sound standard acceptable to many users. Psychology and understanding of the human brain and human beings offer new knowledge on how to design and package sound, music and information.
