lived in Lakewood for 39 years and found a new appreciation for my hometown when I moved away 10 years ago. First, to New York City for eight years, then to Ashland, Ohio, for two years. Extremes, well sure, but it was a great way to gain a deep awareness of all that Lakewood has to offer.

I grew up on Edgewater Drive in Lakewood, overlooking Lake Erie in the 1960s. We tossed our old toys over the cliff into the lake just for fun sometimes. Thank goodness we have learned our lesson. Lakewood too has learned not to dump city garbage into the lake, and now has a great citywide recycling program. Today I live in a Gold Coast high rise that I used to deliver newspapers to (yes, The Plain Dealer). I am so impressed walking the streets of Lakewood

enjoying the vast variety of home styles. Lakewood has long been known as a “City of Homes” and for good reason. There is a huge range of housing styles available, from luxurious mansions along the historic Clifton Beach waterfront to the quaint, modest homes in Bird Town. As a professional photographer, I’m an active person who loves the outdoors. Living in an apartment is nice, especially with a view of Lake Erie; however, getting outside and enjoying a day in nature, so close to home, is priceless. My favorite way to traverse Lakewood is on a bicycle. Challenging hills and beautiful lake views from miles of bike trails as well as biking through old magnificent neighborhoods is what makes Lakewood so accessible.

As a resident of the Carlyle, every day I get in the elevator and I come into contact with my international neighbors, and talk with them. This may not seem odd, but in New York it is virtually unheard of. The Carlyle, as well as the rest of the Lakewood community, has always been made up of a “melting pot” of citizens with roots from all over the world. This successful integration of people from so many different cultures is one of the special aspects of my favorite neighborhood, Lakewood, Ohio.
