Student of ecology and volunteer “trailkeeper,” Rachel Petersen, and business owner and mechanic, Dee Gipson, know the need for that balance. Driven by their varied interests — from recycled fashion and music, to classic motorcycles and salmon ecosystems of the Northwest — they represent the spirit of craftsmanship and adventure in Portland, Oregon. Charles Danner also understood this balance. He started making shoes in 1932, but when he recognized the need for durable boots to support the rapidly growing Pacific Northwest timber industry, he reestablished his business in Portland to handcraft a quality product. MAKING TIME FOR THE TIMELESS DEE GIBSON Family Man, Builder, DJ, Mechanic

Dee Gibson surrounds himself with timeless style — whether in the form of music, construction or vehicles built to last. When he isn’t hanging with his 3-year-old son, you’ll find him working hard on a construction site, spinning records at a Portland club or restoring classic Chevys and motorcycles in the shop.

Growing up in Georgia, Dee says, “I wanted to see what the other side of the U.S. was like.” He packed up and traveled West, stopping to explore cities and sites along the way. When he eventually landed in Portland, Oregon, he decided to stay put. Danner Light Revival Khaki | Style #30422

“I like it here,” he says. “It’s chill.” But while he’s drawn to the relaxed vibe of the city, he isn’t one to slow down. A builder by day, he recently cofounded a construction company, which he describes as doing “a little bit of everything,” from remodels and landscaping to demos and dry wall. For the last nine years, he’s also moonlighted as a DJ at special events and various venues, like Portland’s 5 & Dime, where he’s known for his comprehensive taste in tunes. “I just love music,” he says. “There’s always got to be some hip hop, country, funk, soul….”

As a business owner and father of a toddler, his free moments may be few and far between — still, he manages to carve out time for his hobbies and interests. In addition to his love of music, Dee has a passion and talent for bringing quality vehicles back to life, namely trucks and Harley-Davidsons. He and his brother recently worked together to restore a 1971 Chevy C10. Whether refurbishing, building, entertaining or creating, he laughs, “I’m always working on something.”
