THE NEXT EINDHOVEN: POST INDUSTRIAL HOUSING ANTON & GERARD Paul Diederen and Bert Dirrix (Anton), Jo Coenen (Gerard) Strijp S, Eindhoven, Holland [June 2011 present]
After Philips departure to Amsterdam, the Strijp S area of industry filled up by his company has return to the city of Eindhoven. This area has in total 27 hectares that is being renovated for the new step in the city to become a Brain port. This area of industry is located inside the ring road making it easy to reach from the center, however it can be isolated to be able to maintain its own language and unity so the new urban project keeps the evolution. The terrain has a triangle form with around 45 hectares that would be in use for the new develop of the urban project. The triangle is configured by this small streets where you can find yourself in an environment of intimacy they invite the people to get involved in the renovated industry area, this project will be specialize in the green open space around Leidingstraat , while the renovated buildings will have their own identity with a new distinctive architecture. The new develop for the Strijp S would be mostly housing concepts like condos, lofts and urban villas while the workspaces are more concentrate in the creative industries with starting entrepreneurs. The Triangle is mainly for new retail concepts like pop up stores and boutiques, there will be urban sports space like skateboarding, street and break dancing areas, for the cultural part there will be halls for concerts and performances in the new buildings, people could enjoy to listen to some bands and make music. Some of the former factory buildings where most of Phillips inventions were created are now the Anton & Gerard where people can enjoy a quick visit or decide to stay work or lived. The buildings still remain the characteristic industrial look from the inside and outside. The ground floor becomes in the welcoming entrance for the buildings, all is components are created to attract people , some of this are the museum and some galleries with special shops , as well the buildings are conformed by a culture and design area, all this concepts will be design to involved the coming and going of people at any time . The different features for this projects will be the office space with 1500 square meters, the retail space for lease with 3000 square meters. The 276 lofts living areas are design in the next floors of the buildings as a single large space with the main idea that the resident will have the option to design the space. The rooftops of both buildings are conformed by gardens with the view of the city as a background.
Paul Diederen was born in 1959, he is architect and director of group Diederendirrix. He graduated in 1986 in the Technique University of Eindhoven from architecture and urban design. Professor in the academy of architecture in Rotterdam, Arnhem, Tilburg and Technique University of Eindhoven. From 1996 to 1999 was an architect and director of Diederen Schutgens Architects, since 2005 is an architect and director of Diederendirrix with Bert Dirrix. Bert Dirrix was born in 1954 he’s an architect and director of Diederendirrix. He graduated in the Technique University of Eindhoven from architecture and urban design. Until 2003 was a professor in Technique University of Eindhoven, Faculty of Architecture, and Academy of Architecture of Tilburg, Maastricht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Arnhem and in the Academy of Design in Eindhoven. Since 2005 he’s an architect and director of Diederendirrix with Paul Diederen. He’s a member form the quality team of Rijnboog Arnhem, member of supervising team from Strijp R Eindhoven, Breda, Berkel Bosch Eindhoven and Maasboulevard Venlo and from Utrecht station.

Jo Coenen was born in Heerlen in 1949, he study architecture and urban planing in Eindhoven University of Technology and graduated in 1975. In 1980 he started his own practice in Eindhoven. Professor of the department of architecture at Delf University of Technology. he stablish the Mit Research Center for Modification, Intervention and Transformation at Delf UT, he assigned major significance to the art of interweaving past and present putting emphasis on the design. Since 2009 he has been a professor of Architecture and Transformation at Maastricht University.He has a great influence and ispiration from his contacts in Central and Southern Europe, during the years he has design many architectural and urban development projects, like NAI in Rotterddam, the master plan and library fro the Ceramique Centre in Maastricht and the KNSM Island in Amsterdam are the most famous.

The Anton is configured by a complex system of vertical circulation which is inte� grated by oval staircases that change along the different floors creating a conti� nous horizontal, vertical and diagonal flows of people.2 The Anton building is design with two different typologies of housing units that var� ies according to the square meters, the access position from the corridor to the staircase and the specific loft design selected by the future inhabitant.1

On the other hand the main principle on the design of the Gerard Building is the creation of voids and patios in the north and south facade with the aim to pro� vide natural lightning and ventilation of the different corridors and lofts and the connection to the outside. The Gerard building is design with three different typol� ogies of housing units that varies according to the square meters, the access from the lofts to the corridor and the specific design selected by the future inhabitant.1

The architects of the both buildings decide to keep the former facade to mantain the industrial identity of the Phillips buildigns. The ground floor is divided according to the main access of the urban project of Strijp S. The Anton building connect the main urban circulation with the principal vertical circulation, the only one that creates a nexus between the collective space in the rooftop and the housing units.a

The renovation of Strijp S becomes on an important link to Eindhoven to attract people to a new place to work and live.q

Buro Lubbers office was the one in charge of the design for the rooftop garden for the Anton & Gerard buildings creating a suburban space on the top of the buildings configured with paths passing q

The building is becoming the mediator between the colective space and the urban space, creating a continous flow between interior and exterior conforming the building as an element of urban architecture integrated with the neighbourhood as a complex system structure. the rooftop garden stablish a visual relationship between the buildings and the city of Eindhoven.a

The design in the Antons Loft is all about industrial and raw character enhacing the existing structure, that residents can divide to their own taste and insight, with a compact designed kitchen and bathroom that gives the appareance of wideness to the space and create a connection with the city through the view

In the design in the Gerards loft the bathroom becomes in an important architectural element that takes advantage of the high from the former industrial ceiling, the module is composed by the bathroom and an attached stairs to access the bed on the top of the module . Anton & Gerard as an urban housing project are based on the conservation and protection of the architectural heritage of the site, the housing block takes another level in this two buildings improving the social life and the quality of architecture for the future community of the neighborhood. t the preservation of the memory of the site is not just a physical element , but it becomes in a remembrance of the history of the former Industry environment using the lightning as a theme to reflect it in the inside area of the buildings through the voids, the patios and the staircases.t As part of a complex urban system, the Strijp S, Anton & Gerard are the outcome of adaptative reuse strategies for the exsiting industrial structures, developing new programs in the ground floor of the buildings in close relationship with the urban context and the community building elements. This housing project is the natural evolution and transition of the reuse of existing post industrial sites in the city and the perfect integration between the architecture and the urban renovation of the Strijp S as part of the next Eindhoven.t
