Georgia Institute of Technology Masters of Architecture • 2014-2015

daycare

atlanta, Georgia

Professor Sonit Bafna • CORE II Graduate Design Studio

design brief Propose a schematic design for a daycare center at three different sites on the Georgia Tech campus for the children of faculty, staff, and students. At present, all of the institute-related facilities are located to the north of the campus, in graduate student housing, Home Park, and Atlantic Station.

Program • Craft the few important individual spaces, and

the relations among them.

• Take into account a population whose concerns and perceptions are intelligible, but not identical to ours (and neither are their physical dimensions).

Process

Program vs site

Develop and refine daycare schematic over the course of three design charrettes. Each phase would address a different site with its own existing conditions and unique constraints. In the end, the most effective design/site would be chosen to represent the vision of a daycare on Georgia Tech campus.

Artisan Village

eatonton, Georgia

Professor George B. Johnston • CORE III Graduate Design Studio

design brief • PhasE one

Program

Develop strategies for the adaptive reuse of (and intervention into) the existing warehouse buildings that both honor their historical, materials character and transform them for their new purposes. Within the first phase of schematic design, key facilities are to be accommodated within the existing footprints of two renovated warehouse buildings. Once established, these core facilities will provide the nexus for future growth to be considered subsequently in a second phase of development.

Main Building @12,000 sqf • Café • Arts gallery • Incubator/studios • Retail sales area • Conference space • Restrooms • Information center Livery @ 6,000 sqf • Artist demonstration studios • Warehousing facility

strategy Establish new relationships between the buildings through the use of enclosures. Incisions were made through existing openings of the buildings thus creating separate spaces for the various programmatic functions. A series of circulation loops would connect the various spaces as well as the two buildings together.

Artisan Village

eatonton, Georgia

design brief • PhasE two

Program

The initial phase of The Artisans Village (TAV) has been a success. The example of artists and craftspeople working within the renewed warehouse structures has led to a renaissance in downtown Eatonton. As a further catalysts to this momentum, the Arts Council envisions the addition of a housing for artists directly adjacent to the (TAV). Working with the boundary footprints of the historic site configuration, the Arts Council imagines a contemporary structure, at once counterpoint and complement in both material and expression to the adjacent buildings.

20 live/work studio units @ 800 sqf each Shared amenities (as required) • Entry (or entries) • Fitness space • Enclosed courtyard and/or roof terrace • Laundry, mailroom, bike storage, garbage Ground-level covered marketplace @ 4,000 sqf Parking (accommodated within existing parking facilities)

strategy Apply scale and typology of adjacent buildings to create the formal language for the new housing development. Artisan housing shall not exceed a height of 26 feet. Artisan housing will exibit the vernacular style of the warehouse/shed. Additionally, ground level of housing units will sit on ground plane in order to satisfy height limit. Public-private spaces (private entries vs public market) will need to be carefully considered.
