Joliet Catholic Academy, as an academic institution, is an important ministry of the Roman Catholic Church of Joliet. It provides an educational process that challenges every person to reach their potential through the strength of faith and the support of family. We believe that God is present in people and through their interactions. Faculty, staff and students, together with parents, friends and alumni, cooperatively emulate strong family values. We believe this education process works best in an environment of respectful faith, high expectation, disciplined freedom, generous devotion and hopeful challenge. Our model is Mary, the Mother of God, Mother of the Church, who is the inspiration and patroness of both the Carmelites and the Joliet Franciscan Sisters.

The pages of this annual report reflect the generosity of the individuals who believe in what Joliet Catholic Academy is all about; that JCA is a community centered in faith, focused on academic preparation, where each and every student is inspired and is an important part of our family.Through the tremendous support of our donors, over 200 students benefited from tuition assistance during the 2005-2006 academic school year. However, we continue to ask for your support so that we can uphold the solid academic, spiritual and athletic standards of JCA. From the President/CEO Dear Friends, “There is no challenge too great for those who have the will and heart to make it happen.” This past year was a “make it happen” year both academically and athletically. It was a year that brought alumni and friends together to celebrate the realization of a dream. It was a year of pride and gratitude to God for the gift of Joliet Catholic Academy where Catholic education, in the spirit of the Carmelites and Franciscans, is thriving. Academically, JCA students continue to achieve excellence. The Math team won first place in the American Mathematics Competition; ACT scores for Class 2006 was 23.2 (The national average was 21.1 and State average 20.5); Graduation rate continues at 100%, with 97% of JCA graduates going on to the college/university of their choice. The National, Language, Art and Mathematics Honor Societies have increased in number. This year four students were named National Merit Commended Students, with thirty seven students becoming Illinois State Scholars. “Faith plus education equals a lifetime of values” – the 2005-06 theme expressed well how students and staff extended their faith to those in need through community service. From freshmen to seniors, JCA students were involved in Meals-on-Wheels, tutoring, Big Brother Big Sister events, dances for senior citizens, environmental projects,Take Back the Night…the list goes on and on. JCA students have contributed to many needy causes, including the Carmelite missions in Peru and the Franciscan missions in Brazil. Athletic accomplishments were wide-spread in 2005-06. Angel Volleyball brought home a fourth place finish in State; Girls’ Cross Country advanced to sectionals; the Girls’ Tennis team was sectional champs; Girls’ Basketball captured their 3rd consecutive regional championship; the Girls’ track team set new school records before advancing to sectionals and the Varsity Dance team placed 3rd in State. Not to be outdone, the Hilltoppers continued their winning ways with the Varsity football team finishing 1st in the East Suburban Catholic Conference; JV football won conference champion honors and Boys’ Cross Country advanced to sectionals. Senior, Samantha Quigley, was named 2006 Female High School Athlete of the year and Senior,William Joseph Benson, was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft. One of the major highlights of 2005-06 was the completion of the Student Activity Center. The “Student” ribbon cutting ceremony, held on November 2nd, is a memory permanently etched in my mind. Our students deserved this facility and now, due to the generosity of so many alumni and friends…it is a reality! The formal blessing and dedication on February 1st was a true celebration of success. The philanthropic goal of $3.2 million set for the Capital Campaign was achieved. The funding for the entire $6.3 million project was achieved through variable rate Bonds. All in all, the Student Activity Center along with the new Alumni Hall, Band Room, Athletic offices and Multi-purpose area, are a tribute to alumni and friends. This Capital Campaign was one of “teamwork” showing that “together we can reach the heights of excellence and perform the extraordinary.” On behalf of all of us at Joliet Catholic Academy, especially the students, THANK YOU for caring and sharing of your gifts. As I reflect on the rich history, the strong academic programs, the spirit of family that is rich in values, and the spiritual dimension that is Joliet Catholic Academy, I am proud and grateful. We are blessed to have such a pillar of excellence in the city of Joliet. Because of the dedicated administration, faculty, staff and board members, and the committed parents, good things continue to happen. Expansion for the future is blossoming and a significant difference is being made in the hearts of those in need. Through experiences such as Kairos, tutor volunteers, visiting the sick and serving meals to the homeless, as well as other outreach activities, the “church” comes to life.Through the study of St. Francis, St. Clare, St.Therese and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, students have the privilege to explore and come to a deeper understanding of their faith. Spirituality becomes not just a word, but a meaningful part of life.This is one of the aspects that makes the education at Joliet Catholic Academy unique and cherished. From the Chair/JCA Board of Directors Dear JCA Family, The 2005 – 2006 Academic Year saw a goal accomplished and marked a continuation of a great tradition. On February 1, 2006, the Student Activity Center was dedicated and opened. This goal was reached through the dedication and efforts of the entire JCA Family. The Student Activity Center provides JCA students with both space and flexibility. The successful construction of the Student Activity Center is a major accomplishment, but it does not fulfill all of JCA’s space needs. The majority of the school is housed in space constructed in the 1950’s; it needs to be updated and made more efficient in order to meet the needs of the current and future students. The tradition of excellence in academics and athletics continued in the 2005 – 2006 Academic Year...to list a few. • In 2006, over 47 students were inducted into the National Honor Society • The math team received first place in the American Mathematics Competition • The class of 2006 earned over $4.1 million in scholarships • 97% of the class of 2006 went on to pursue higher education; 3% of the class of 2006 attended a vocational college or joined the military ranks • Senior Samantha Quigley was named Sun Times 2006 Female High School Athlete of the Year, the second time in three years a JCA student has received this honor. • Senior William Joseph Benson was 64th draft pick overall in the 2006 Major League Draft • 30 athletes were All-Conference for the 2005 – 2006 school year. This year marks my final year as Chairman of the JCA Board of Directors. I have personally been enriched by the experience. It was a pleasure to work with a dedicated Board of Directors and with a professional staff. To the Directors who likewise have finished their six year term: Suzanne Whalen, Jane Condon, John Mezera and Don Theobald, I will miss our interaction and creativity. I wish to thank you for your generosity, expertise and dedication – yours was a labor of love. To the remaining Board Members, I wish you well. May you have the endurance, patience and dedication to achieve your goals. May you keep the interest of the students foremost in your minds and actions. Sister Faith, you do believe. You not only see the need, you act to meet it. You are the driving force and the motivator; you bear a great weight on your shoulders, but do not succumb to it. The future of JCA is what the JCA Family makes of it. The task is to maintain essence and tradition while the school evolves in order to meet the needs of the community and its students. JCA Honors Couple at Jubilaté 2006 Joliet Catholic Academy presented Dave and Donna Jones with the third annual President’s Recognition Award at its annual fundraising event, Jubilaté, on Saturday, March 4th at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. This award was initiated by Sr. Faith Szambelanczyk, osf, President and CEO of Joliet Catholic Academy.The President’s Recognition Award gives credit to those who have given St. Francis Academy, De LaSalle High School, Joliet Catholic High School and now Joliet Catholic Academy outstanding and continuous support. Dave and Donna Jones are an integral part of the Joliet Catholic Academy community.They understand the importance of a strong educational foundation and are very proud to be alumni; Dave from JCHS class of 1960 and Donna from SFA class of 1961.Their passion for the Carmelite and Franciscan spirit permeate their lives and that of their children. David, JCHS ’87; Lisa, SFA ‘89; and Michael, JCA ’91 have thrived in the example of their parents and with them, are committed to faith, family, community service and academic excellence. Dave and Donna’s connection with JCA seems eternal. Their continuous encouragement to maintain JCA on the “cutting edge” of spirituality, academics and athletics leads you to understand why they are JCA’s #1 cheerleaders! Dave’s positive attitude, supported by Donna, was evident in their co-chairing Jubilaté in 1997 and 1998. Dave speaks often of his passion to “give back” in order to ensure that future students have the foundation they need to succeed. “Be true to the values…be true to Catholic identity…give them the tools for success” are statements in any conversation with Dave Jones. Dave credits his Mom and Dad for “common sense and direction in life” and Donna for being the “heart” of the family. Their daughter Lisa is a high school English teacher and mentor, while David and Michael work with their Dad in the family business, J. Merle Jones & Sons. Michael continues the Jones’ dedication to JCA by currently serving on the Alumni Board. Dave and Donna have continued their support by serving on numerous committees throughout the years.Task Force member, Jubilaté Chaircouple, and cabinet for JCA’s Capital Campaign, are just a few examples of their consistant involvement and concern for… “Directions of Excellence, Forging a New Frontier.” Their dedication and belief in Catholic education helped turn a dream and vision into reality. We have always known what an asset they are to our JCA family, and we are grateful for the gift of Dave and Donna Jones.Their lives are example to us all; they inspire and challenge us to continue to forge the new JCA frontier.
