Any complicated project can break up into simple parts. In another words, we can make interesting place out of a bunch of simple elements. In this project, we combined condition ground, program element, field and human.

Even though there are thousands of way to combine those parts, finding the relationship between all those elements can be the key to have a strong design. How to make each element to to others is new to us. Desicion is not just a random decision, it has to be out of a reason. The logic behind combining shows the way of design.

Furthermore, making all the things complicated is not always good. The balance between simpleness and complex is also important. From Project one, we learn the function of individual pieces, as well as the relationship between individual pieces. That is the idea of parts and whole.

Project 2 - Mapping and Recon

Mapping is about getting as much as information about the site. By doing reserch, we can learn the site better, such as its culture, geology, topography and so on.

Mapping is also about finding the unique of the site. In order to avoid universal design, we should find its unique and develope a design based on its character. Site specific is important, mapping is the starting point.

At the same time, we might come up with some idea during mapping process. It provides the opportunity to think more critically.

Project 3 - Taxonomy of Emergent Spatial Types

Project 3 is about the edge. Edge is the threshold between water and land. With a standard egde, we are exploring different way to maximize the interactiom between people and water.

Similar to Project 1, we have all those landsape elements, such as wall, ramp, mound, elevated path and so on. By using program elements and our own generalized rule, we created the matrix with 64 different type of edge per group.

Eventually, we combined 6 of the model and have a critical combine model. In stead of simply put all the elements together, we are required to apply the characters of them into one. To me, this is also a part-to-whole exercise. How each elements talk to each other is really interesting.

Project 4 - Silver Linkages + Exquisite Structures

Understanding the part-to-whole concept, the diverse aspects of Silver Lake Reservoir and the different way of interacting water, we got to the final stage of this project. Design for the new opportunity of Silver Lake Reservoir requires the understanding of all of those three projects.

Critical Combine Model

Walking dog rule is guiding the overall arc shape. While positive and negative space are creating different spatial experience. At the same time, those four walls are creating the similar visual experience. The ramp is extending all the way into the bottom of water. People are able to get closed to water. In addition, the open space under ramp can be occupied by people when there is no water.

There are three user bias, including people, plants and animals. Instead of focusing on people, plants and wildlife are playing important role in the site. Therefore, we should also take them into consideration.

Interaction between people and water is still an important point in terms of design. Since the site is Silver Lake Reservoir, most of us have to deal with the edge. Coming up with the idea of how to make as much as interaction is the key.

Drawing

Site Plan The overall site is linear type project, with naturally organic path. Curve circulation forms a sense of relaxation. People who come here for whether picnic, or just take a walk, will experience different at each zone.

The platform along the edge provides people the opportunity to actually feel the water. They can sit at the edge of platform and put their feet inside water, with warm sunshine and nice breeze. Even more, picnic people can jump inside the platform and just sit by the water.

Different density of trees provides different feeling for people. Sunshine is coming through the leaf, even though people are not moving, they can still feel some kind of movement. It is a dynamic feeling, warm, relaxing and enjoying.

Critical Design Decisions

Critical Design Decisions The design is based on how two opposites are working together, Linear and disperse, geometric and organic, form and field condition. By using density as a strategy, it creates flexible space.

25

Enclosure

Design is also based on openness and enclosure. By using different plant material, the sense of space is changing from enclosure to openness. The difference of both density and height are adjusted according to the function of certain area. They are functioning as orientation index at the same time.
