THE SAVAGE STYLE

Jonathan Savage

JONATHAN SAVAGE is the consummate Southerner by birth, and his energetic personality makes him a sought-after designer regionally and internationally. Jonathan gleaned a richer knowledge of fine art, sculpture, and antiques at the American University in London. He then earned a BFA in interior design from O’More College of Design in Tennessee. After working in New York City, he now resides in Palm Beach and Nashville, where he was named the 2016 top designer by Nashville Lifestyles magazine.

THE ALUMINAIRE HOUSE

Michael Schwarting and Frances Campani

Jonathan Savage’s first book—with a linen cover and foil stamping—is a luxury presentation. In it, Savage writes about his design philosophy. “I believe that the classical principles of design—balance, harmony, form, proportion scale, repetition, contrast—are foundational, enduring, and immutable. And I follow them always—even when I break what other people consider to be the rules,” he says. He designs homes to be welcoming, comfortable to live in, and beautiful in every way. His passion is for contemporary design with a fresh approach, but contemporary does not always mean all-neutral, minimal rooms. He uses layers, art, fabrics, furnishings, and décor to banish any thoughts of a cold, sparsely decorated home. “In my view, rooms only come alive when people use them, so I’m a fan of spaces that draw people in every day.” $40.00

The Aluminaire House was conceived and constructed by Lawrence Kocher and Albert Frey as an exhibition house for the Allied Arts and Industry and Architectural League Exhibition of 1931 at the Grand Central Palace in New York City. The house is constructed of mostly aluminum and glass, and was intended to be mass produced and affordable, using inexpensive, off-the-shelf materials. The three-story house was constructed for the exhibit in just ten days, and during its first week on display, attracted more than 100,000 visitors.

The historic Aluminaire House has been reconstructed in Palm Springs, on the grounds of the Palm Springs Art Museum, where it will be part of the museum’s permanent Collection.

CAMPANI and MICHAEL SCHWARTING are a husband-andwife architect team who have worked for 36 years to save and protect the Aluminaire House. They established Campani and Schwarting Architects in 2000. Frances Campani is an Assistant Professor of Architecture and Michael Schwarting is Professor Emeritus at New York Institute of Technology where the rescue of the Aluminaire began. Frances Campani and Michael Schwarting live and practice architecture in Port Jefferson, New York.

WRITING THE GOLDEN STATE

The New Literary Terrain of California

Edited by Carribean Fragoza, Romeo Guzman and Samine Joudat • Illustrated by Fernando Corona

Writing the Golden State: The New Literary Terrain of California explores California through twenty-five essays that look beyond the clichés of the “California Dream,” portraying a state that is deviant and recalcitrant, proud and humble, joyful and communal. It is a California that reclaims the beauty of the unwanted, the quotidian, and the out-ofplace. Constantly in search of “the spirit of a place” Writing the Golden State pries into the themes of familial genealogy, migration, land and housing, and national belonging and identity. Collectively, the essays demonstrate how individuals and towns have weathered social, political, and economic change in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles is Agatha Christie’s first detective novel (a cozy mystery—no violence or gore), and where she introduces her fictional detective Hercule Poirot. The story, set in England during World War I, is a true who-done-it full of mysterious characters and teasing clues. Monson’s retelling of the original book captures the plot and distills it in a way that is fun for children, gently ushering them into the literary world of Christie’s mysteries. Along with the story, there are activities, games, and puzzles throughout to help with children’s engagement, and might just foster a few budding detectives. There is also a glossary of terms and French words.

Come Back, Salmon

“An inspiring story of young scientists in action. Candid color photos of boys and girls of several ethnic groups, plus a text based on recorded conversations with the kids, lend drama and immediacy; additional scientific facts (e.g., how salmon scales tell the age of the fish; how salmon build a nest or ‘redd’) appear in boxes.”

Welcome to Fall 2024 at Gibbs Smith! We’re excited to share our new books and gift items with you. We’re particularly happy to share some insights into our Home & Design list with you because 2024 marks 50 years since we published our first book in this genre!

Gibbs Smith has enjoyed a reputation for publishing fine books on architecture and design since our first architecture book, Building with Nature, was published in 1974, followed by multiple books on Greene & Greene that set our mark for luxury and aspirational lifestyle. In 1992, we published our first full-color interior design book, Cowboy High Style. Our lists since then have included books on a wide range of styles and featured monographs about and by some of the country’s most prominent architects and designers. We are grateful for all those who have partnered with us over the years.

We have six amazing books on our Fall 2024 Home & Design list, from a detailed look at the history (and future) of a midcentury iconic building to a boldly graphic coffee table book for lovers of Alpine life and more.

Aluminaire House (page 9) is an exciting review of the history, architecture, and rescue of this iconic building as it makes its new home, permanent home at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Homes of Quiet Elegance (page 6) is a collection of architect Wade Weissmann’s most recent luxury designs, while in Design of a Country Estate (page 4), architect Cathy Purple Cherry shares the story of a fabulous, newly built, coastal country estate.

In The Love of Home (page 5), interior designer Kate Marker reveals her secrets for designing a gorgeous home that inspires connection. Nashville interior designer Jonathan Savage stands apart for his clean, contemporary designs, exquisite use of artwork, and less-is-more sophistication in The Savage Style (page 8). And Alpine Style (page 7) is the ultimate in mountain interior design; the book itself is the pinnacle of graphic design as well.

There are plenty more in our other lines, from cookbooks to board books, flowers, and more. We look forward to hearing what you think.

As an employee-owned, majority female-owned, mission-driven B-Corp, we believe in our people, our communities, and our customers. We thank you for your time and efforts on behalf of Gibbs Smith, our books and gifts, and our authors and contributors.

All best,
