Welcome

O

n behalf of the many hard working and entirely unpaid volunteers who make this event possible, I would like to welcome you to the 20th Reading Beer and Cider Festival.

Hopefully, as you are reading this, the sun has been shining and it’s a beautiful day. But if not, and it’s raining, then I hope than you can console yourselves by sampling one or more of our many, many real ales, ciders and perries on offer. Or perhaps our massive range of foreign bottled beers or British country wines is more to your taste? Whatever your favourite tipple, the volunteers behind the scenes and behind the bars have scoured the country on your behalf – it’s a hard job but somebody has to do it. We're confident you will find something to your tastes, whether it’s an old favourite, or something new or unusual.

I do have one request though. Our pubs are disappearing at an alarming rate, and without pubs there would be nowhere to enjoy real ale the rest of the year. So can I ask each of you to pop into your local next week, say hello and have a drink. The Community Pub is a unique, valuable and much loved part of our heritage. Do your bit to keep that heritage alive! Cheers Dave Scott Festival Organiser

So sit back, relax in the largest beer garden in Reading, or chat with your friends at the longest bar in Reading; listen to the bands (Friday and Saturday), take part in our Pub Quiz (Thursday), have your face painted (Saturday and Sunday), play our traditional pub games, or try your luck on the tombola; but above all I hope you have a fantastic time.

Thursday The opening day of the festival sees the return of the popular Pub Quiz. Starting on Thursday and continuing throughout the festival are the Traditional Pub Games. A selection will be available to play every day including long alley skittles, table football, table skittles, shut the box and toad in the hole. A range of prizes including bottled beer and T shirts are on offer for the champions. If you're feeling lucky, visit the Tombola for the opportunity to win a wide range of beer and pub oriented prizes plus some quirky stuff and soft toys. Plus, if you thought balloons were only good for children's parties, just watch Balloon Platoon, the masters of balloon sculpture. They will be making their way around the site producing balloon sculptures on request – perhaps a bracelet, an animal or the tallest piece of headgear you'll ever wear. Not to be missed.

The British Beer List

The British Beer List

& tasting notes

R

eal Ale has seen a huge growth in recent years. More and more of our local pubs are stocking it and the number of breweries in the UK now numbers well over 1,100.

We’ve got 550 different beers for you this year from breweries all over the country. Ranging from a ten minute walk from the festival site, to the tip of the Lizard in Cornwall, and all the way up to the Isle of Skye. Our longest established brewery first started brewing in the 15th century, and we’ve a fair few that have opened their doors since last year's festival. All beers will be available from opening, provided the cellar team are satisfied that they are ready to serve. Some may take longer to clear and so will come on later in the festival. Along with the tasting notes in the following pages, we have also done our best to provide an indication of the style of the beers with the help of a handy coloured pint glass next to the beer name.

8 20th Reading CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival

Pale = Yellow in the programme and on the cask end label Amber = Orange in the programme and on the cask end label Dark = Brown in the programme and on the cask end label Speciality = Purple in the programme and Blue on the cask end label Although we have done our best with beer details, the programme had to go to print before the beers arrived at the festival so please refer to the cask end labels for updated details on colour and ABV. This year, rather than having a separate LocAle bar for beers brewed within a 30 mile radius of the festival site, we have simply put everything into alphabetical order by brewery. There is still a great selection of LocAle beers that can be identified by the LocAle symbol next to the brewery name in this programme, and on the cask end label.

Beer List CAMRA promotes Mild throughout May and the festival is no exception. Mild is one of, if not the, oldest beer styles in the country, and is enjoying a revival in today's market. Milds are identified next to the beer name. They are black to dark brown to pale amber in colour and come in a variety of styles, from warming roasty ales to light refreshing lunchtime thirst quenchers. Malty and possibly sweet tones dominate the flavour profile but there may be a light hop flavour or aroma. Slight diacetyl (toffee/butterscotch) flavours are not inappropriate. As always, many thanks go to our suppliers, particularly Arthur at Avalon, Stephen at Brighton Bier, Duncan and Buster at Brecon, Mary at Boggart Hole Clough, Josh at Cornish Crown, Nina at Flying Firkin, Allan at Great Heck (though we aren’t absolutely certain that we thank him for stepping down from the beer order role...), Rob at Good Beer, Sanj at Late Knights, Brian O’Kane and Magpie distribution, Richard at Milton, Andy at Nelson, Paul at Small Beer, Sarah at Red Squirrel, Andy at Redemption, Ben at Twickenham, and the LBA. And to all of our direct delivery breweries. We hope you enjoy drinking them as much as we enjoyed choosing them. Cheers Katrina Fletcher & Cara Sheldrake Beer orderers and compilers of tasting notes.

O

nce again Reading Beer Festival cider and perry bar has one of the largest ranges in the country. Over 150 different options will be available over the course of the festival, with a small number being held back until Saturday to maintain the variety in the later days. These are marked prominently in the list below with SAT. Despite our best efforts, some things will change after the programme goes to press. For the most up to date information please refer to the cask end labels on the bar, or ask a member of our volunteer bar staff. Cider is fermented apple juice and perry is fermented pear juice. Depending on the style, cider can be made from a mixture of dessert apple varieties and cooking apple varieties, or from specialist cider apples. Cider apples are smaller and harder than cookers or eaters, but produce excellent juice for cidermaking. Perry is often made from specialist perry pear varieties - unsuitable for eating - but eating varieties have been known to be included. Most ciders and perries are a careful blend of several varieties, but some use just one single variety. These are noted as “SV” after their name in the list. For the twelfth year the festival will host CAMRA’s National Cider and Perry Championships, a prestigious award judged by members of the public. As before, we are also running the South of England regional cider competition, covering the counties of Dorset, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. For 42 20th Reading CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival

the first time we are also conducting a regional perry competition covering the same area. The regional winners will be announced on Friday afternoon and will go through into the national championship judging. The national champion ciders and perries will be announced at about 3.30pm on Saturday. If you are at the festival on Friday afternoon then you can volunteer to take part in a judging panel. The only qualification is liking cider or perry, as you will be guided through the whole process by an experienced CAMRA volunteer. If you want to join in, go to the cider and perry bar and you’ll be allocated to a panel and given a time for judging. Each panel takes about 45 minutes. Once again we are lucky to have a number of local producers, who are all making their ciders and perries within 30 miles of Reading. New additions this year include Long Crendon cider from Buckinghamshire and Orchard Cottage Cider from Chalgrove in Oxfordshire. Local producers are indicated with green highlighting in the list below, and on the bar with special cask end labels. Perries are highlighted with a yellow background to help you spot them. The cask end labels also distinguish between cider and perry - green for cider and yellow for perry. As always, if you’re not sure where to start with such a range and choice, talk to the volunteer bar staff, who'll be happy to advise you. Paul Scrivens Cider Orderer

A

t the Reading Beer Festival we have a selection of award-winning Wines; fantastic grape wines from Berkshire and Sussex as well as a wide variety of Country wines (wine made from other fruits; sugar-rich vegetables and even leaves/bark from trees!) from Devon, Perthshire and Worcestershire. These tend to be a bit sweeter, ranging from medium dry all the way to dessert wines, bringing us nicely to the ever popular mead… This honey-based wine is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages and had recently seen a resurgence in popularity. It is a popular belief that the term “honeymoon” came from the tradition following weddings that the bride and groom would drink mead for a month! Well we don’t have a whole month, but four days of tasting is a good start and, like all of our wines, bottles are available to take home.

Wines local producer. It is a short walk from Twyford station, in the grounds of a beautiful manor house. Well worth a visit! I hope that you enjoy our wine and if you have any comments or suggestions please feel free to let me know.

Foreign Draught and Bottled Beers nce again our friend Olaf Schellenberg has trawled around his native land to bring you an excellent selection of German brews. This year, in addition to many favourites from Belgium and the Netherlands, we have a number of beers which are new to this festival and a range from various newly- formed Dutch breweries enthusiastically sourced by JosĂŠ at Bierlijn in Rotterdam.

O

ommend beers to suit your taste. Please remember that all bottled beers are available for you to take home to drink. There is a deposit of 20p on the bottles, as this is a cost we incur if we do not return them to the suppliers. Please do not open bottles at the festival which have been purchased for take-away, as this infringes the terms of our licence.

The selection offers a good representation across the various styles and strengths. Not all German beer is lager, and Belgium has a lot more to offer than fruit beers and Trappist brews. We have smoked beers; hoppy IPAs; dark and complex stouts; honey beers; beers brewed with wheat, and lambics. These are beers spontaneously fermented with wild yeast and are often sour. If you are not familiar with this or any other style you are welcome to come and chat to our team of volunteers, many of whom return year after year. They are knowledgeable and friendly and will be only too happy to answer your questions and rec-

As always, the beer list is subject to change as it is unrealistic to expect that all 140 ordered will arrive. Not all draught beers will be available at any one time owing to space restrictions: cask end labels will clearly indicate what is currently being served.
