Welcome to the Peterborough Real Ale Pubs Guide! Welcome to the second edition of the Peterborough Real Ale Pub Guide. In recent years we have seen several new pubs and micropubs open both in the city centre and in the outlying districts of Werrington and Hampton. This growth shows how vibrant the real ale and pub scene is in our great city, and we urge you to get out and about and explore some of these fantastic venues. Peterborough has a pub for everyone! If you fancy a great pint in a great beer garden try Charters or the Cuckoo. Some posh fish and chips with your pint of ale? Why not pop over to the Beehive, only a short walk from both the rail and bus stations. Maybe you are looking for a night out with live music? Check out the resident DJ’s at The Solstice. For a band check the Palmerston Arms, Yard of Ale or Brewery Tap. In fact many (if not all) of the featured pubs have live music and events, we have listed websites where possible so you can find out what’s on during your city visit. Unfortunately, we continue to lose pubs nationally with 18 closing every week across the UK, so every visit you make to your pub is so important to keeping it open and available for future generations. As the saying goes, use it or lose it! Pubs often form a hub for our communities, as a place to meet friends and family, or a base for your local darts, footy or cricket team. Interested in poetry or art? Several pubs offer poetry evenings, drawing groups and art discussion. Whatever your interests, you can find a like-minded group down the pub! We hope you find this guide useful, have a great time exploring our city and enjoy your pint! Cheers Matt Mace Chairman, CAMRA Peterborough & District Branch

How to use this Guide The pubs have been split into four distinct areas: City Centre, Werrington, Stanground and Oundle Road/the Ortons. A map of each segment of the city is shown at the start of each section. Each of the pubs are numbered, and the numbers correspond to the numbers on the maps to help you navigate around the city. We have also included a selection of pubs in areas further afield under the heading ‘Out of Town’ on pages 24 and 25. All of the pubs are on or near main Citi bus routes, with the main bus station situated in the Queensgate Shopping Centre. The Citi bus route number is displayed on the pub information. If you would like to get a copy of the bus timetables they are available at: www.stagecoachbus.com. The information provided was accurate at the time of going to press but please check opening times with the pub to avoid any disappointment. Contact details for each pub are with the individual listing. Have a great time visiting the many and varied pubs in Peterborough and please drink responsibly!

DID YOU KNOW? India Pale Ale was specifically brewed for thirsty Englishmen based in colonial India who missed a pint from back home. First brewed in London and Burton-on-Trent, IPAs were strong in alcohol and high in hops: the preservative character of the hops helped keep the beers in good condition during long sea journeys.

peterborough and district camra
What do we
Do?
Peterborough and District Branch, like all CAMRA branches, are primarly concerned with the promotion of our national drink, real ale. Over recent years the battle for real ale seems to have been won with over 1,500 breweries now active in the UK, however, pub culture is constantly under threat so we now focus a large part of our campaigning on the promotion and protection of pubs in our area. We do this in a number of ways including a social calendar of pub trips and brewery visits open to all CAMRA and non-CAMRA members, cycle rides and regular meetings in real ale pubs across the city and further afield. All our diary dates and events are listed on our branch web site: www.real-ale.org.uk.
30
We also produce a bi-monthly magazine, Beer around ‘Ere, containing brewery and pub news and interesting articles on CAMRA campaigns. This is available free in most pubs in the area and can be downloaded from the homepage of the branch website www.real-ale.org. uk. One of the best known things we do is hold the Peterborough Beer Festival on the Embankment every August. This annual event is the largest outdoor beer festival in the UK with over 350 ales and a huge range of bottled beers, cider, perry, wines and even a gin bar! With tens of thousands of visitors, putting on this event is a mammoth task and entirely run by volunteers. Being part of the festival is a fun and rewarding experience and we are always looking for help in setting up the site and running the bars.
If you would be interested in getting involved with the branch activities... Contact our Branch Secretary on 07731 993 896 - or email: info@peterborough-camra.org.uk.
