A warm welcome again to our milestone 40th Peterborough Beer Festival, organised and run by the Peterborough & District branch of CAMRA – The Campaign for Real Ale. Our loyal band of unpaid volunteers have been beavering away to set up the festival site over the last week, to ensure everything goes smoothly for your enjoyment. Of course many of the the committee have spent most of the last month’s since the end of last years PBF, organising this event. I do think that many of them should be applauded for the time and effort that they put into organising what has become one of the premier events in the city’s calendar. We are continually on the lookout for new members to come on board, to become part of this great event. Also we are always very grateful for the help that our members and other volunteers give to actually run the festival. It would be very difficult to do so without them. Which brings me to quash any rumours that you may have heard about this being the last PBF. It is definitely not! We do intend to carry on next year, and in the future. It’s true that a number of our long serving staff are ‘retiring’, or standing down, but we can still run the festival with ‘new blood’. Due to the rising popularity of gin, we have introduced a Gin Bar as a first for this year. It’s situated outside the north marquee, near some of the food stalls. We have a huge range of real ales, ciders, perries and English produced wines, with our World Beers also a feature. The popular ‘one off’ Singles Bar is still with us, with only one beer from each featured brewery on the bar. So when it’s gone, its gone! We have live music on the stage each night, and on Friday and Saturday afternoons. The traditional Cooper will be showing his skills on Tuesday, for those that have an interest in how casks are made from wood. On Saturday we have the return of the Tipple Fair, for collectors of breweriana. For the night owls amongst you, the bars will remain open till 11-30pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Please listen to the announcements about returning your glasses, unless you wish to keep them. The glasses return counter will close approximately 30 minutes after time has been called.

Please respect the staff, who may have been on their feet for a very long day. As with all licensed premises, we are governed by the same rules as any pub. So, we can refuse to serve any customers who become abusive to staff, or we think have had more than enough to drink. The local branch of CAMRA continues to campaign against losing any more of our pubs. There’s a vigorous campaign to save The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road, which has been closed for over nine months now. Please give your support to this group. On a brighter front we have seen the rise of the ‘micro pub’ within the city. The Frothblowers in Werrington, has increased the number to four, adding to The Bumble Inn, The Stoneworks and Puzzles all in the city centre. After a very tasteful refurbishment, the New Inn on Oundle Road, now renamed The Yard of Ale, has now opened its doors. More details about these pubs, and much more, can be read in our bi-monthly magazine Beer Around ‘Ere. If you would like to be part of this happy family, then head for the membership stand and join up to the most successful consumer campaigning group that exists. The cost is minimal, but the benefits are huge. Finally I have to announce that this will be my last year of writing this welcome to our visitors. I am stepping down from my 10 year stint as chairman. I still hope to be able to take an active part within the branch and the PBF, but not such a demanding role, due to age and health matters maybe affecting me. I can only re-iterate the pleasure that I have had in both parts, meeting many dedicated people from both sides of the bar. I have many friendships that have flourished from my association with The Campaign, and hope to continue to keep those pleasures.

Conditions of Entry apply this year for Visitor’s Safety and Enjoyment. All visitors will consent to a random search, as a condition of entry. No large bags will be admitted to the festival as this will slow down entry. The management reserves the right to refuse admission, and remove visitors from the event. All visitors consent to be included in official photography, visual and audio recordings. The management will not accept responsibility for any losses of valuables. In accordance with the law, smoking is not permitted within marquees, nor is the use of E-cigarettes. Use the designated Smoking Shelters or the great outdoors. 4

Festival We all hope that your visit to the Beer Festival this year will be a memorable one. Remember, without your support the festival could not take place, and the chance to sample some of the excellent brews on offer would be lost. Please try and imagine the festival marquees as one giant pub. Of course, as with all pubs, there are certain rules we have to comply with. The times of opening are published in the programme and the marquees are completely non-smoking. Accompanied children are allowed in the bar marquees, but please keep them away from the bar serveries. And remember that it is against the law to drink alcohol on site if you are under 18. You will need to buy a glass before you start. If it gets too sticky or you want to change glass sizes just take it back to the glasses counter and, provided it is undamaged, exchange it. The Beer Festival serves all beer, cider and wine in oversized glasses with governmentstamped, line-measured markings to ensure that you, the customer, get a full measure in your glass. Please be careful if you put your glass down on a table, on the grass, or anywhere that it could be knocked over and broken. If such an event does occur please inform a member of staff or security that there is broken glass. On no account attempt to pick up the pieces yourself. We have staff with the proper equipment to retrieve it safely. Do not grind it into the grass! Other events take place on this site after we have finished. Be careful not to leave your glass unattended. Remember – You paid for it!

To ensure you enjoy the festival at all times we advise you to start off with some light beers, say a mild or low gravity ale, then on to something a bit stronger. Starting off with the strongest beers on the menu means your taste buds get no chance to enjoy the different flavours that the various brews offer. As with any other pub we do have the right to eject any person who we feel is a threat to other customers, or our staff. Thankfully this is a very rare occurrence. Also remember that, just like other pubs, you are not allowed to drink your own alcohol on site, and illegal drugs are totally banned, and their use will result in a call to the police. Finally, let me remind you of the dedicated staff who are serving you at the festival. Every one of them is an unpaid volunteer, so please be patient at busy times. The person serving you may well have been on duty for the best part of the day, or the whole week, and are naturally starting to flag a bit! You can help these people by joining CAMRA and offering to help run the festival. 7
Allergens Allergen information for the beers, ciders, perries and wines will be available at the CAMRA Membership and Information stand. Please enquire there if you have any specific request about allergens, or ask a member of the bar staff who will find out for you. The food provided at this festival is from independent catering establishments and each will display their own allergen information. Cask Beers: Normally contain one or more cereals including barley, wheat, rye and oats (Gluten). A few may contain Sulphites. We hope to have at least one beer suitable for Coeliacs.
Bottled Beers & Lagers: Normally contain one or more cereals including barley, wheat, rye and oats. (Gluten). A few may contain Sulphites. Some bottled beers are suitable for Coeliacs.
Cider & Perry – Many contain Sulphites.

Entertainment & Music at the Festival So, celebrating 40 years of Peterborough Beer Festival with some of the best local talent available. All of the bands playing at the festival are very special in their own right and it is probably wrong to highlight any specific bands, so please do come along and offer your support to your favourites on the night. If you don’t know the Ouse Valley Singles Club, then you are missing one of the funniest live acts around. Performing on Thursday night, this band have been known to make grown men cry! Friday’s entertainment starts late afternoon and for Saturday beginning at 2pm with a fantastic blues band through to the late evening finale with Motor City Vipers. 7pm Open Mic Night With the popularity of Open Mic evenings ever increasing around pubs in the Peterborough area, this has now become a regular feature of PBF. We simply have to give another opportunity to some of our less well known individuals to show off their unique talents on the Beer Festival Stage. 8pm Vinyl Nite Rob Gair has been appearing at club nights all over Peterborough under the name ‘The Whole Point’ playing the very best 60s Mod, Ska, Motown and Northern Soul on vinyl. Here, for the attendees at the Peterborough Beer Festival 2017, along with his usual blend he will be playing an eclectic mix of well known classic pop from the last 55 years, along with some rarely heard but definite gems, all on lovely vinyl only.

7.30pm Tom Wright Band Tom Wright is a 21 year old, British singer-songwriter, and has just released his debut album. Brought up with rock and roll music, his songs delve into the creative, storytelling element of country music, with the guitarheavy drive of classic rock anthems. If you are not familiar with The Ouse Valley Singles Club, or have yet to catch their live show, then you are in for a treat. They are one of the most original outfits currently doing the live

circuit. Hailing from the historical market town of Bedford, The OVSC are Tim Barron (Compare/Vocalist/Ukulele), Amy Martell (vocals/Bass), Uncle Sam(vocals/toasting/ Washboard), Jim Morton(Snare) and sometimes member Neil Whittington (guitar). They have gigged almost every weekend over the last two years honing their craft and building a massive following of loyal fans as they go. Heavily influenced by the sounds & traditions of 1950’s Skiffle, they combine this long forgotten genre with the energy of Punk, whilst occasionally dropping some Rub n dub reggae urban flavours into the mix and then layering this with hilarious Folk-like story-telling. 4pm Palmerston Arms Ukulele Band This is a bunch from the Palmerston Arms who formed up for a bit of fun and have gone from strength to strength. 8pm Revolver Revolver are well known for their highly energetic stage performances of many of the biggest indie anthems from the likes of Oasis, Kaiser Chiefs, Stereophonics, Killers, Feeder, U2,

Entertainment– continued along with up to date pop from Walk the Moon, classics from The Jam, The Police, Erasure and quirky stuff like Wheatus and Scouting for Girls. Revolver are a very visual band managing to engage the audience from the word go and make any event belong to the audience as much as the band. Don’t be surprised to see frontman Nok bring his Geordie charm into the crowd and get the less shy joining in. Nok and Mark Delaine Smith (former member of the UKs top Oasis tribute) started the band in 2013 and along with the explosive Danny Hunt on guitar and Dan Spence on drums whichever one of the four you watch there’s always something going on. If you like the big indie numbers (Revolver were chosen as the support act to Scouting for Girls in 2016) and you like it bursting with energy and performance with ripping riffs and full on vocal harmonies then you will have a top night and join the many others who have become part of the large Revolver family. www.revolveruk.com

5pm All Shook Up All Shook Up was formed in late 2015, when Luke Allport (of The Replicas) decided he wanted to form a Rock ‘n’ Roll band, with a main focus on 50’s Sun records tracks, mainly Elvis, but since then the set has grown to include a number of rocking tracks, with just a few from the 60s as well! The band are certainly no Elvis impersonator, and just want to play the classic Elvis tracks that made him the King! The band is very fortunate to have Peter Ravenhill, one of Peterborough’s youngest and brightest guitar talents strumming out those classic Scotty Moore riffs, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. The band’s backline are Chris Dunn on bass guitar, and Nigel Taylor on drums! 9.30pm Retrolux Formed in 2003 Retrolux are Dave Colton (Bass / Vocals), Ian Graham (Guitar/Vocals), Chris Goodwin (Harmonica/Vocals) and drummer Thorin ‘Fozzie’ Dixon. From their first headline set at the festival in 2006, and another support slot to Letz Zep in 2011, the band have built a large loyal local following playing classic rock that’s slightly outside the usual pub rock set list. 9.15pm Motor City Vipers There has always been a strong soul-scene within Peterborough and the surrounding area. Very few weekends go by without a retro-soul night being hosted by one or more of our top home-grown soul DJs – so it’s no surprise that the city has given rise to one of the UKs most respected soul bands. Since 2009, Motor City Vipers have gained themselves a reputation as one of the UKs top soul acts, having supported artists as diverse as Geno Washington, Neville Staple, The Blockheads and Kiki Dee. Also returning this year are Nene Valley Brewery, as one of the areas fastest growing breweries be sure to stop by at their brewery bar (Brewery bar 5 on the layout). Make sure you visit us to sample some of what our branch area brewers have to offer. KEY CASK
Peterborough Beer Festival will again feature a Keycask Bar located in the centre of the North Tent between Bars 3 and 4. Keycask is now being featured at CAMRA festivals because there is now an official acceptance that the product within a keycask can in fact be REAL. Keycask are nothing like the old traditional casks of yesteryear. Instead, like many other modern innovations, technology has been used to make it better! As we all know, traditional kegs use CO2 injected into a container that holds the beer and increases the pressure within the container causing the beer to flow out of the tap when it is open. While the tap is closed, the CO2 is still being forced into the beer causing it to carbonate. Keycasks however, don’t even need CO2 for the beer to be served. Often times, such as at this festival, a simple air compressor is used to squeeze a bladder within the Keycask to force the beer out to the tap. The air never comes into contact with the product therefore that product is never altered (in other words, the beer is only as carbonated as the brewery wants it to be...keycask beer isn’t always fizzy!). The easiest way to explain the technology is to refer you to the illustration opposite. The keycask selection for this beer festival features some of the most sought after and game changing brewers. Some of the brewers have only been brewing for a short time, while others have been around for quite a while; however, what they all have in Peterborough Beer Festival 2017
common is the desire to make incredible beer and to get it out to the public in the best condition possible. The format for this bar is a little different than the rest of the bars at the festival. There will be only 13 beers available at any given time and around 40 different beers in total throughout the festival. Although we know what beers we have, we won’t know what is going on when; therefore we can’t guarantee that you will be able to have the beers you are looking for when you want them. In order to avoid disappointment, check back often as these casks could come and go very quickly. We will not be holding back any stock so get them while you can. We will also only be providing these beers with a maximum of ½ pint measures so that we can enable as many people as possible the opportunity to try something from this bar (feel free to come back for a second ½ pint of something if you really enjoyed it). If you are interested in finding out more about the keycask technology, feel free to ask any of the CAMRA Staff team behind the Keycask Bar. These keycask beers have only increased the number of beers at the festival and have not decreased our selection of traditional cask ales.
Keg starts out with internal bag full of beer - beer has conditioned inside the keg just like a big bottle.
Pressure inside keg “squeezes” beer out of the internal bag. Clear beer is served from the top - whilst sediment settles to the bottom.
When the bag is empty the beer will stop flowing. All that is left is the sediment.

Design our logo for 2018 and win £200! Thank you to all who sent in designs for the logo in 2017. Now it’s time to try again. We will need a logo for the 41st Peterborough Beer Festival. If you have an artistic bent – or even if you haven’t – hunt out those old pencils and have a go. We are offering £200 for the design or idea that we use. The final design will need the words, “Peterborough Beer Festival” and “41st” and will need to include the CAMRA logo.
However, if you don’t think that you can do all that then don’t worry. It is the idea that is important. We can always get an artist to create a design using your idea. Escape Bar 2017 If you are driving, have kiddies that need refreshing, or just want a change from alcohol, then head for the Escape Bar – a dedicated soft drinks bar were you will find a range of soft drinks to suit both adult and children’s tastes.
Soft drinks include lemonade, Coke, orange juice, Britvic 55, Pepsi, Fanta, Tango, Sprite, J2O, 7UP, Ribena, Appletise, Lucozade, ginger beer, Victorian lemonade and many others.
Fruit drinks for the children will be priced at just 50 pence each, as will bottles of still and sparkling water. (Remember you will pay up to £2 a bottle for water at many non-CAMRA festivals).

Cooper We are fortunate once again to have a visit from T & R Theakston’s master cooper, Jonathan Manby, on Tuesday. This year, Jonathan will be accompanied by his apprentice, Euan Findlay. T & R Theakston are one of the few British brewers who still employ a full-time cooper. Although their beers are no longer delivered in oak casks some of their beers are matured in the wood. Jonathan was trained by master brewer and cooper, Clive Hollis, and is one of the few remaining brewery coopers in the country. Peterborough Beer Festival 2017
Everyone who has watched Jonathan’s demonstration of his craft has enjoyed watching him create casks with tools that haven’t changed in centuries. If you didn’t catch it last year, then make sure that you do not miss the chance to observe and marvel at his skill in the north tent. 47

There is also a range of the ever popular Fruit Beers as well as Framboise (Raspberry) & Strawberry on draught.
Coopers Pale Ale 4.5% 37.5cl Blond Ale Pale body with a white head. Aroma is light. Malts and subtle hops. Taste is slightly bitter. Sweet aftertaste and malty undertones.
Cooper Coopers Sparkling Ale 5.8% 37.5cl Blond Ale Hazy golden with a small head. Malty aroma with fruity notes. Taste has some dryish grapefruit flavour and a hint of alcohol.
Little Creatures Little Creatures Pale Ale 5.2% 33cl American Pale Ale Hazy orange colour body, thin white head. Aroma is orange, piney, hops, herbs. Taste is light sweet, medium bitter.
Austria One to look out for this year is a new Trappist brewery, beer brewed by monks, Spencers from the USA. y l l a e r e w o D need pubs? Well yes, of course we do! The most practical reason is that you can only drink real ale in pubs or festivals such as these. Real ale requires the skills of the brewer to produce it, and the licensee to keep it in top condition in the pub cellar, so that we can enjoy it. If we lose our pubs, we lose our real ale. Simple as that. We have lost a great many pubs in our city. One particular road has only two pubs within a two mile stretch, where only a few years ago there were a dozen or more. From just over a hundred pubs or licensed premises, at least fifty have gone – many demolished completely.

Welcome to the cider and perry bar. All the ciders and perries sold here are ‘real’ in the sense that they consist principally of fermented apple and fermented pear juice respectively (a mixed apple / pear fermentation is termed a “pyder”). We have a wide range of traditionally made ciders and perries from all over the country, but because of the popularity of cider containing fruit and other flavourings, we also have a good selection of these. You will therefore, find on the bar strawberry, cherry, mango and other fruit ciders, also ginger, rhubarb, even rum & raisin and gin & tonic. You will note that most of the fruit ciders are 4% ABV, considerably weaker than most of the nonfruit ciders. This is because of Customs and Excise duty bands; fruit cider over 4% is classified as fruit wine and taxed as such. The majority of the ciders are still, although some will sparkle a little due to the residual fermentation in the tubs and boxes. Because of the nature of the fermentation process real ciders and perries may be crystal clear, hazy or even cloudy, but not be so opaque as to make them look unappealing in the glass. The Peterborough area is not traditionally associated with cider making, but as in many areas of the country local cider making is on the rise, and we have a good range of local(ish) ciders at the festival. alcoholic apple juices on the bar. These are 100% juice and very refreshing on their own, also mixing them with a cider gives a very pleasant drink at a lower ABV than straight cider. Our knowledgeable bar staff will be very happy to give small tastes and discuss the drinks with you provided the bar is not too busy.

Green labels are cider and yellow labels are perry (including any pyders). Most ciders / perries are made from a blend of apple / pear varieties; where a single variety has been used this is on the tub label. All the ciders and perries have been categorized as Very Dry, Dry, Medium Dry, Medium, Medium Sweet, Sweet or Very Sweet. You may not always agree with us, particularly since some tubs can change in character as they are drunk, but it shouldn’t be too far off. By all means refer to the program and every effort has been made to ensure that it is accurate; nevertheless, it has to be printed long before the cider actually arrives so discrepancies with the tub labels can occur. Welcome to the 2017 Wine Bar. We are again just inside the South marquee as you come in so easy to find some wines! All our wines are English and we offer a selection of some of the best white, rosé, red and sparkling wines, not forgetting the popular country fruit wines from Lyme Bay Winery in Devon. English wines have improved greatly over recent years and you will have the opportunity to try some different wines you may not have seen before. For 2017 we have 46 different wines to try and I am pleased to offer 5 new wines for this years Festival including a Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Brut Reserve Sparkling from Lyme Bay plus a Warden Abbey, a new vineyard for the Festival. We also have a small quantity of Lyme Bay’s new Yore, a sparkling Honey Mead to try, it’s a 4% alternative to beer and cider in bottles, no malt, no apples, no grapes. As with the beers, we will not have all the wines in the programme at all times, but we aim to have a good selection. If you have any questions about the wines, or are unsure what to choose, just ask and we will do our best to help. Enjoy the Festival and we hope to see you at the Wine Bar. The connection between Peterborough CAMRA and The Peterborough Branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution goes back almost 40 years. During this period collections at this festival have raised enough to enable us to buy 3 DClass and 1 Atlantic 85 Inshore Lifeboats and also contribute toward the new Shannon Class (all weather) Lifeboat for Wells next-the-Sea. This would not have been possible without the outstanding generosity of Beer Festival attendees and workers. We have a winning formula that has raised considerable amounts of money to assist the extremely brave and skilful men and women of the RNLI fleet. The RNLI is a charity which is not funded by the government. The running costs, in 2016, was £177.3m - keeping a modern fleet, ever-ready to go to the rescue, at over 238 lifeboat stations. These running costs also include crew training and now a lifeguard service on more than 240 popular beaches. The RNLI funds campaigns for water safety, and the boats and crews you also see on the Thames in Central London, as well as assisting with flood relief and rescue around the coast. It costs around £485,000 a day to run the RNLI, all of which is generously donated by the public. This might sound like a lot of money, but HQ in Poole feels that the 23 people the lifeboat crews rescue, on average, every day are worth it. To enable this to happen the RNLI has

pledged to provide every lifeboat crew with a 25-knot all-weather lifeboat by 2019. This means they will require 50 new Shannon Class Lifeboats, and will build six of these every year, as well as maintaining the existing fleet. To make this happen (and this is where a long-term cost-effective vision is at work) the Institution has constructed a brand new all-weather Lifeboat Centre in Poole, Dorset. This facility brings every stage of the lifeboat building process under one roof. It provides greater control of costs and quality and also creates employment, including apprenticeships in marine engineering and boatbuilding. We look forward to meeting new and old friends again at this year’s festival, tasting even more new brews and, hopefully, holding up ever heavy collecting buckets. The front of house manager and crew will be there to welcome you, and ensure that you have a memorable visit.
