Rushford’s cheesy dam past By Kathryn Ross

ocated in northwestern Allegany County, Rushford was first settled in 1808, but in 1926 the town was saved from obscurity when its destiny turned from cheese production to water sports. The first settlement was made by Enos Gary of Vermont in 1808, according to Beer’s “History of a ”Allegany County.” He was quickly followed by Charles Swift, Abel Belknap, Amos Rose and Joshua Wilson settlers from New England between 180910. It is not known how the name Rushford was decided. It is suggested that it came from rushes that grew along the river or from a well-known lawyer whose surname was Rush. When Rushford was founded lumbering employed most of the people. After that, came the dairy farms and the cheese industry evolved from that. Rushford Spectator editor, Dr. James Sullivan wrote that “Rushford was divided into two districts by the Caneadea Creek, the soil on the slopes is a gravelly loam which answers to cultivation with large crops of potatoes, vegetables and grains. Dairying is, however, a large part of the business of the town. Rushford was the first in the State to specialize in the manufacture of pineapple cheeses, in which it was a leader for half a century.” In the 19th century History of New York State its written, “An early American example of commercially produced cheese for general consumption was the Norton familys "Pineapple cheese." It began in Goshen, Conn. Lewis M. Norton invented a process for making a soft cheddar cheese which he pressed into a pineapple-shaped wooden mold and then dried by hanging in an openwork net that produced a distinctive diamond-shape pattern. Norton obtained a patent for it in 1810. Norton is credited for establishing the first cheese factory in the United States in 1844. The factory eventually moved from Connecticut to Rushford, NY in Alleghany County.”

In the late 1800s the pineapple cheese factory moved to Attica, J. Elmer, one of the foremost names in Rushford history according to the History of Rushford was another who capitalized on the cheese making. Mostly farmers made curd, until Elmer traveled to Cheddar, England, and learned the secret of making cheddar cheese. He brought the method back and started making cheddar in Rushford. At one time Rushford was the Cheddar Cheese Center of the world. The population reached its high point in the mid-1800s. While in the late 1800s the pineapple cheese factory moved to Attica, Rushford was to gain state-wide fame in another way. Before the construction of the Caneadea Dam the Town of Rushford was in danger of fading into just another hill town. By the turn of the century economics were pretty much at a low point based on information in the History of Rushford, then, in the early 1920s the Mohawk Power Company, which owned Rochester Gas and Electric saw the need for more electrical power. A plan was made to build a $2 million dam on Caneadea Creek which would save RG and E the expense of purchasing 100,000 tons of coal a year to generate electrical power. The plan called for the water impounded by the dam to be released in the fall when the water level of the Genesee River had dropped to a point below that which is required to supply the power needed to operate the company’s hydro power plant located in Rochester. The logical site for the $2 million dam project was located in the Caneadea Creek gorge a recreation area, however the area also included the hamlets of East Rushford and Kelloggville. The small communities housed a melodium factory, several farms, feed mills, saw mills and gristmills. The Caneadea Power Corporation, which was formed as a subsidiary to RG and E to build the dam, paid $1,200 for a small farm, and $12,000 for a larger farm, $10,000 for a feed mill and

$15,000 for a sawmill. The people moved out of the two hamlets either to Rushford or out of the area. Work on the dam started in Dec. 1926, and at its peak, 500 were employed on the project. The dam was completed by 1929 and the lake was formed opening up lakefront property to fishermen and others who enjoy water sports. Today the lake community is Rushford’s claim to fame. The Allegany County Historical Society notes that today, fishermen using radar occasionally pick out the outline of the old buildings at the bottom of the lake. At the turn of the new century, Jay Woelfel, a frequent visitor to the lake as a child, produced a movie called “Ghost Lake” which was filmed on Rushford Lake using town’s people as extras and featuring members of the volunteer fire department and rescue squad. It was released in 2005 and has had limited success. It is available at local video stores. Rushford also boasts some famous sons. Frank Wayland Higgins (1856 – 1907) of Rushford, was a member of the New York State Senate from 1894 to 1902, Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1903 to 1904 and was elected in 1904 as the 35th Governor of New York from 1905 to 1906. The house in Rushford in which he was born, is preserved and today is often part of historical tours. Rushford graduate Franklin G. Babbitt attended Houghton College before receiving a congressional appointment to the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Md. He graduated in 1945, as part of an accelerated Class of 1946 during World War II. He served aboard numerous submarines, including the Spinax, Volador, Chivo Balao and Thornback. In 1961, he became an assistant naval attache in Moscow. From 1973 to 1975, Capt.Babbitt managed 16 defense and attache offices in western and southern Europe. He retired from the Navy in 1975 and passed away in 2007.

The Dansville Rotary Club wishes to thank the Dansville Central School District for allowing the club the use of the High School Gym for their annual Tip Off Basketball Tournament. This event is one of the club’s largest fund raisers each year allowing the ongoing support of its’ many community functions. Special thanks to Rob Van Scoter, Jim McMahon, Terry Conway and Mark McGavisk for donating their personal time to support this function. Also to Molly and Kent Koch and their staff for all their time manning the Booster Club’s refreshment stand for every hour of the tournament. Finally, this Tournament would not be successful without the help of many Rotarians working their appointed shifts over the 3 days. Rotary Club is extremely thankful to all the supporting businesses who were advertisers and sponsors in the Tournament ad booklet. Thanks to The Genesee Valley Pennysaver for the great job on the ad books and the shirts. They looked great. The 4 participating schools this year were Wayland-Cohocton, Perry Central, Greece Odyssey and the host school, Dansville Central. All games were very well played with Perry defeating Dansville in the final. Thanks to all the players and cheerleaders for their participation. The club is already looking forward to next year’s tournament.
