Intoxicating Naples By Kathryn Ross

ore than grapes, the intoxicating serenity and abundance of nature in the tiny town of Naples have always been its attraction. Tucked in at the bottom of the little finger of the Finger Lakes, the natural abundance and safety of the Naples Valley was first recognized by Indians fleeing the turmoil of war, more than a century before Columbus arrived. Based on information compiled by Indian historian Arthur Caswell Parker, Naples native Robert J. Vierhile writes in his book, “Nundawao, The Oldest Seneca Village,” “The first settlers in the Naples Valley (Koyendaga Valley) were Indians seeking a peaceful place to live.” The Indian migration apparently took place in the late 1300s and their peaceful life in the glens and hills carved out by glaciers millions of years before, was short lived. By 1789 surveyors had mapped the area and the first white settlers arrived by ice sleds via Canandaigua Lake in Feb. 1790. By treaty, the Indians had only 20 years to vacate. But the Indians would always think of the valley and Bare Hill on its eastern shore, which would also give rise to the white village’s name, as their ancestral home. Parker indicates that the Naples Valley is the birthplace of the Seneca Nation. Bare Hill, according to Parker holds a prominent place in Seneca Indian tradition, so much so that its is still celebrated today when residents around Canandaigua Lake light fires making a Ring of Fire to celebrate the end of summer. For white settlers Bare Hill also became a focal point. The first white settlers in the valley were the Samuel Parish family followed two months later by William Clark, Ephraim Cleveland and Nathan Watkins families. The area became known as Watkinstown. In 1795 the name changed to Middletown because the community was located halfway between

Bath and Canandaigua. “Early industries included an iron foundry, knife factory, tanneries, wagon shops, asheries, pulling and carding mills, shoe shops and cheese factories,” the Naples Record reported. In 1808 the settlement’s name was changed to Naples upon the suggestion of a visitor from France who likened the area to Naples, Italy and nearby Bare Hill to Mt. Vesuvius. As he guided this reporter on a tour of Naples, town historian William Vierhile said, “And it is true Bare Hill does resemble Mt. Vesuvius. I was stationed in Naples in World War II and saw it for myself.” In 1848 E.A. McKay planted the first vineyard from which the Naples wine industry would grow to world-wide fame. “The climate and location here are ideal for grape growing. The lake moderates the climate giving us a few more weeks of warm weather than in other parts of the state and we get the morning sun on the hillside where the grapes were first grown. Today the hillside isn’t used as much because the grape harvesters only work on the flat,” Vierhile explained. It wasn’t until 1882 when John J. Widmer came from Switzerland to Naples that the wine industry bloomed. The Naples Record reported, “The word was that Naples had an ideal climate and ideal soil for grape culture.” Widmer bought a portion of the Naples hillside and planted his first vines in 1883 following Hiram Maxfield Jr., who had established the Maxfield Wine Cellar in 1880. Widmer had immediate success and while Widmer wine was sold in Rochester and Patterson, NJ, in 1882 it was reported that 364 tons of grapes were shipped to Boston. Widmer wines flourished and it became the major employer, producing grape products such as altar wine and a Port-Tokay-Sherry tonic sold by druggists under the name Widmer’s Tonic, during Prohibition. In 1960 the Widmer era ended when the winery was sold. In the last part of the 20 cen-

tury production was limited, and according to Vierhile the town became a bedroom community for Canandaigua and nearby Rochester. Recently the former Widmer production facility and vineyards were purchased by the Hazlitt Winery, whose owners have “promised to increase production and employment,” Vierhile said. Throughout the years Naples also nourished the attributes which first brought settlers. In 1882 a fossilized tree was found in Grimes Glen. Believed to be the oldest form of a tree in the state, it is preserved in the New York State Museum. The Glen became a popular picnic and fishing site. Today a new bridge gives easy access to fisherman. On April 1, 1961 the first Naples Creek Rainbow Trout Derby was held. Today a fishing site on the creek provides wheelchair and handicap access. The first Naples Grape Festival was held in 1961 only to be discontinued. Revitalized in 1988 the Grape Festival is now a premier event featuring hundreds of vendors, craftsmen and entertainers in September. Much of the celebration takes place at the town hall, erected in 1872 as a living memorial to the more than 200 veterans of the Civil War. Along with attractive turn-of-the-century architecture and historic buildings Naples also boasts St. Januarius Catholic Church. Built in 1965 from a design by Rochester architect James Johnson it reflects the shape of a grape leaf and the cement cast walls are studded with stained glass ovals representing the different grape varieties grown in the valley. Today the grape industry continues to flourish in unexpected ways. In 1966 Irene Bouchard baked the first commercial grape pie at her bake shop. By 1987 grape pie baking had become the leading cottage industry in the village with more than 35,000 baked and sold nationwide. In 2012 over 50,000 pies are baked and sold annually as the grape industry continues to flourish in the Koyendaga Valley first settled by the Senecas.
