Hello Neighbors!

I always look forward to the month of November as it is a welcome break from the craziness of Halloween and right before the “busy-ness” and celebrations in December. I love clearing out the spooky decorations, and giving November “its moment” with new pumpkins, cinnamon spice candles, and bringing the “fall cozy feeling” into the house. While the days get shorter, it does give me more time to cook for my family and test out recipes for our annual Friendsgiving dinner.

This month our feature family is the Jones Family! Brandon and DeEtte have a serendipitous story to share with our readers and they are happily serving their community and raising their children here in Danville. We couldn’t think of a better family to grace the cover this November as we celebrate Veteran’s Day this month... thank you for your service, Brandon...and to all the Veterans here in town!

If you have a story to share or know a neighbor that you would love to see on our cover, please send me an email at aangstenberger@bestversionmedia.com. We welcome all families, couples, or individuals - the only requirement is that our feature family live on the west side of Danville. So send your friends and neighbors my way, I can’t wait to meet them!

See you around town!

Meet the Jones Family

From a “Battle of the Bands” to the Golden Gate: Building A Legacy of Service in Danville

The Jones’ story first began in Washington D.C. while Brandon was attending medical school at George Washington University and DeEtte was working on Capitol Hill. It was through a mutual friend, Seth Johnson, where the two would meet. DeEtte was asked to step in as a last minute vocalist for Seth’s band in a“Battle of the Bands” competition, and Brandon was the band’s drummer. As luck would have it, (maybe it was because of Brandon’s drumming skills, or DeEtte’s singing) the band won the competition and soon Brandon took DeEtte on their first date at a pizzeria in Georgetown. Some friends jokingly awarded the pair “Least Chemistry on a First Date” and the pair spent that next year as close friends and enjoying all DC had to offer, but were never “official.” But everything shifted after a moving-day incident that involved Brandon and his roommate breaking some toes while helping DeEtte move a heavy TV. As a thank-you (and perhaps a consolation), DeEtte invited the boys over for dinner. In the end, only Brandon showed up, and that simple dinner turned into the start of something much bigger.

Their time in D.C was “filled with unforgettable experiences”... celebrating the 4th of July on the Capitol lawn, muggy summer evenings, and even sharing an apartment building with Russian spies (who were later arrested)! During that time, Brandon and DeEtte also discovered their grandmothers had known one another while they were raising their children in the small town of Lovell, Wyoming years prior. To make their connection even more coincidental, they discovered that their fathers had lived in the same Lovell house in their youth…one decade after the other. DeEtte recounts that this “revelation of our families intertwined histories made us reconsider our views on being “meant to be.” Though neither of us had put much stock in the concept before, our family connections made us wonder if our paths were always meant to cross.” Only after a few months of dating, Brandon was assigned to Travis Air Force Base for his medical residency and soon after, he flew out to surprise DeEtte in New York for a proposal in Central Park. In 2009, the pair married in Oakland, CA at the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints’ Temple and have since built their beautiful life together.

Brandon grew up in Alpine, Utah and studied psychology at Brigham Young University. Later he received his MD at George Washington University fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor and helping others with compassion and care. He is now a family medicine physician and medical director at AC Wellness. Growing up in the East Bay, DeEtte is a Livermore native. She also attended Brigham Young University, studying

International Relations and working on Capitol Hill before founding her consulting firm, Graystone Strategies (a consulting group solving strategic challenges for non-profits and start ups). DeEtte is “inspired by so many people who work to make a difference locally and throughout the world.” Together, both Brandon and DeEtte have remained successful in their goal of creating a “life centered on service, family, and making an impact.”

The Jones household is filled with energy and creativity as children Grayson (12), Avelyn (8), and Isla (5) keep Brandon and DeEtte busy. Grayson loves playing flag football, the piano and skiing. He’s a “tech enthusiast who recently launched his own slime business, “Sunset Slimes.” Avelyn has also been bitten by the creative bug - she’s a budding artist, gymnast, pianist and singer in the Danville Girls Choir. Little sister, Isla, started Kindergarten this year. She tells amazing stories, loves learning to play the piano and is looking forward to taking dance classes. You soon may see the Jones girls’ very own “start-up” as they are working on a cute little pop-up bakery, “Your Favorite Place” in their front yard. In their freetime, the Jones family loves paddle boating in the San Ramon Creek, or taking day trips to the beach. On Tuesday nights they enjoy their tradition of “dinner and a show,” complete with “bad karaoke numbers by both parents and hilarious dancing” from the kids during dinner. Since the whole family are musicians, music is extremely important to the family. DeEtte is supporting the Charlotte Wood Middle School band, hoping to improve the music program for students there and create more musical opportunities for the community at large. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, you will often find the family volunteering for their church, in their Brownie troop or at their children’s local schools; Montair and Charlotte Wood. Passing down a “Legacy of Service” is very important to Brandon and DeEtte, as they are both very proud of their families’ history of service to their country. Brandon’s grandfather died serving in WWII, DeEtte’s grandfather served in the Navy and even Brandon himself served as a physician in the Air Force in the Afghanistan War. “This deep commitment to service is something we aim to pass onto our children and hope to teach them the value of sacrifice, freedom and caring for others.”

While DeEtte and Brandon have been fortunate to see many places around the world, they hope to show those many parts of the world to their children one day. They love being parents and are passionate about teaching their children to “learn from people everywhere and want to show them how kindness and caring truly can change the world.” The Jones family frequently travels to Utah to visit Brandon’s siblings as well as DeEtte’s sister. Additionally, some other favorite vacation spots are trips to Disneyland, skiing in Tahoe and Park City, and a new family favorite…Hawaii! While they enjoy showing the world to their children, Brandon and DeEtte have truly found a home the past 3 years here in Danville. The children love riding scooters around their quiet court with the neighborhood children,

and they “cherish the close-knit feel of their neighborhood and the warm, friendly connections they’ve built.” Danville has given their family a safe and welcoming home and many opportunities to invest in their community. Whether they’re attending local parades or enjoying a quiet afternoon at their favorite downtown spots, they feel blessed to be raising their family in such a supportive and vibrant community. The Jones family has a special message to share with the Danville Living family….”We’re grateful to be part of such a supportive community. We believe the strongest communities are built on kindness, service, and seeing the value in everyone. We hope to contribute to making Danville an even better place to live and raise our children.”

Time to Show Your Successes; Your Extracurricular Story

It’s Showtime! By now, your student should be diving into their college application process. For the University of California system, this can be a game changer. With the UC system no longer using SAT scores, the application is dependent on a powerful grade point average (GPA), the essay prompts, as discussed in my last article, and an in-depth activity list that demonstrates the character of your child beyond the classroom. But what does this activity list represent?

Keep in mind, the colleges are investing in your student as much as you are investing in the colleges. The universities are choosing a community of applicants that have resilience and can persevere, students who won’t drop out after a quarter or semester. The activity list should show your student’s ability to be committed and passionate in their activities. If they play a sport, it should be more than half a year. If they love theater, what is their demonstrated commitment, and how have they grown in it? If their passion is volunteerism, show documentation of the difference they made, how long they have done it, and what they have learned from their work. Students who commit themselves and show growth from their exracurriculars while keeping a solid GPA are in the most demand for university acceptance.

The requirements to enter colleges these days can sometimes feel daunting. If you are feeling overwhelmed and struggling to navigate the college application experience, reach out to EYHCollegeCoach. We are here to make the experience manageable to produce the best profile for your student from their college list, how to present their extracurriculars, how to design the essay process and more. We have packages for every high school age level to support your student for success. Reach out today at https://www.eyhcollegecoach.com/

Home Appreciation Looks Different, Depending on Your Angle

What’s the difference between HOME-flation and RENT-flation?

Rent-flation costs a tenant more, every year, while Home-flation increases a property owner’s net worth. If you’ve ever plugged numbers into one of the many “rent vs. buy” comparisons that are available, you’ve likely missed out on this part of the equation. In reality, these comparisons don’t make any sense, unless you live someplace where home values stay the same over time. I’ve never heard of such a place.

Let’s start with some easy numbers. If you buy a home today with 20% down and take out a 30 year fixed rate loan, there is no doubt that your immediate monthly housing expense will be higher than if you rent the same home. However, if you own the home for 30 years and keep the same loan, your monthly payment will stay fixed and at the end of 30 years, you will own the home free and clear. Let’s look at history for a clear picture. The home that I rented 30 years ago was worth about $220,000 at the time, and rent was $1,100/month. Today, that same home is worth about $2,100,000 and rents for about $5,300/month. If I had bought the home 30 years ago, I would now own an asset worth $2,100,000. If I chose to rent, because it was “cheaper” than buying, and stayed put, I would currently be paying almost 5 times as much in rent, and would have no equity in this property. In reality, had I chosen to rent the home and stay put, I likely would have made a decision to move to a much smaller home at some

point, because whether I could afford the rent or not, why would I pay that much in rent?!?

Please notice that I used the word “home” in my example above, and not “house.” I mention this because over the years, the most common reasoning that I hear from qualified buyers is that they want to wait a few years until they can afford to buy a house, instead of something less. My example above was actually for an attached home. If you know for certain that you will be in a much stronger position to buy in the near future, holding out might make sense. For most buyers, however, waiting has resulted in much higher purchase prices instead of the ability to buy a better home.

There are some circumstances when I think that someone is better off renting, than buying. The biggest is when they know that they will only be staying in the area for a very short time. While some are able to “flip” a home and sell quickly for a large profit, that’s rare. It usually takes a longer investment for the numbers to make sense.

If you’re just getting started and know for certain that you won’t be able to stay in the home that you can afford today, for very long (because you will outgrow it), take another look at the example above. One of the smartest wealth building strategies that you can use is to keep the smaller home as a rental, when you buy your next home. With a little time, you should be receiving enough rent to cover your costs of ownership, eventually paying off your loan.

Every home purchase is unique. Please feel free to reach out to me at 925-964-5010 or via email at Lisa.Hopkins@ Compass.com to discuss your options. It’s never too early to start planning for success.

JOE & RON GATTI

What is Atopic Dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of childhood eczema. It is a disease caused by genetic aberrations in a variety of genes such as filaggrin, Card11 and SPINKS, all of which lead to defects in the skin barrier. Atopic dermatitis is aptly named “the itch that rashes” because the problem starts with itching that induces scratching which, in turn, creates the rash. Patients with this type of eczema also often suffer from other diseases like asthma and have allergies to airborne allergens and/or foods. In infancy, the disease frequently presents with widespread areas of involvement where food sensitivities often play a triggering role. In childhood the disease is often localized to predictable areas like the nook of the elbows and behind the knees. These younger children often have hyper accentuated wrinkling on the lower eyelids due to excessive eye rubbing. Most kids outgrow their eczema, but there are some patients that continue to suffer into adulthood.

Historically, the mainstay of treatment has been the use of topical corticosteroids. Their initial use in the 1950’s changed the management of atopic dermatitis from a problem that could be debilitating to one that one that could be controlled. The main issue is that these creams, while incredibly helpful at controlling inflammation, can produce unwanted side effects like thinning of the skin when used long term. Luckily, we have safer options today like Dupixent (dupilumab) for which you have probably seen commercials. This self-injected systemic medication has probably transformed the lives of more patients with eczema than any single pharmaceutical. The reason is that the drug targets a very specific molecule called IL-4 that directs part of the inflammatory cascade leading to itch. Because the action of this drug is so specific, the improvement is swift and often is without side effects. More recently, a newer topical cream called Opzelura (ruxolitinib) has taken center stage in the fight against atopic dermatitis as it is as strong as a corticosteroid cream without any significant side effects. Opzelura works by blocking

another component of the inflammatory cascade, the Janus kinase (JAK) enzymes JAK1 and JAK2.

Besides pharmaceutical interventions, we always discuss with patients other habits that help control eczema. Limiting the amount of soaps used while washing, avoiding fragrance in all products and using emollients like moisturizers to trap water in the skin are essential habits to keeping patients on track. Concurrent use of oral antihistamines can also be helpful as circulating levels of histamine are often elevated and contribute to the symptom of itch.

Close monitoring and follow up by the dermatologist are critical to guiding patients to improvement. Although atopic dermatitis can be horribly debilitating, it is also one of the most gratifying to treat with today’s directed and safe therapies.

Chilled Crimson Potato Poppers

Thanksgiving is almost here and you have to ‘Wow’ your guests with a new and exciting dish. What are you gonna do? Well, I have the answer right here. This prosciutto stuffed potato is salty, creamy, starchy, and just plain good. It makes a great appetizer or a fancy side dish. It kind of reminds me of deviled eggs only with a potato. Recipe provided by my multitalented friend Ryan.

Serves 12

You will need;

• 12 baby red potatoes (roughly the same size)

• 4 ounces softened cream cheese

• 4 ounces prosciutto, torn into small pieces

Putting it together;

• 10 chives, chopped fine

• 6 cloves of garlic, minced

• Candied pecans, one for each potato half

• Salt and Pepper

Start by boiling a large pot of salted water and add the potatoes. Cook until fork tender. For me, it took 30 minutes. While the potatoes cook, you can prepare the filling. In a medium size bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, garlic, prosciutto, salt, and pepper until well mixed. Carefully remove the potatoes to a plate and allow them to cool for at least 20 minutes. Once they’re cool enough to touch, cut each one in half and scoop half of the potato flesh out into the prosciutto bowl. Mix everything together until it resembles lumpy mashed potatoes. Using a teaspoon, scoop the mixture back into the potato cups, then cover and chill for at least an hour. When you’re ready to serve, top with a candied pecan, and a dash of paprika (optional).

HAVE YOU CRUSH’D IT YET?

Danville residents are certainly known for welcoming a multitude of culinary restaurants to their downtown, and Crush’d Wine Bar and Kitchen is no exception. As soon as you walk into the open concept restaurant, you’ll simultaneously feel a local presence of neighbors and friends casually enjoying each other’s company, yet filled with a sophisticated and attention to detail ambiance. The ambiance is also enhanced by the beautiful florals and greenery of a fellow downtown local business, Casa V Floral Design. Jame Blackmon, General Manager and Sommelier of Crush’d, has been given the task to create a Danville gathering spot that focuses on a friendly atmosphere, sustainability, locally sourced ingredients, high quality food, all while maintaining a commitment to reducing as little waste as possible ....and he has succeeded! Immediately upon entering Crush’d you will be greeted by a friendly smile seating you at a beautiful banquette table or showing you the way towards one of the most impressive bars in the SF Bay Area. Unique to Crush’d, you’ll find the entire bar lined with over 24 wines on tap. The movement behind the “wine on tap” program is multi-layered…not only does it allow for the wine to be temperature-controlled, it ensures that every glass of wine is served at the perfect temperature, without compromising on freshness. Additionally, nothing goes to waste or ends up in the landfill. Quality is surely not compromised, as you will be able to enjoy some of the highest rated wines from local California vineyards, Germany, Italy and New Zealand. Some of our favorites from the evening were a Crossbar Pinot Noir from Sonoma, and the Steven Kent Cabernet Franc from right here in the Livermore Valley. During our meal, Jame was kind enough to spend a few minutes with us sharing his vision for the restaurant and how excited he was to have such a welcoming community in Danville. We were sure to tell him how much we enjoyed our

visit, as well as the awesome music playlist that kept us there for close to 3 hours!

Chef Charlotte De Bleecker has produced a menu filled with shared bites, tartines, caviar and artisan meat and cheese boards. The food has been carefully sourced from local farmers and ranchers and the servers are knowledgeable on how to recommend the perfect food pairing with the wines you have chosen. On our visit, we were lucky enough to sample the delicious roasted cauliflower, deviled eggs, wagon wheel grilled cheese and prosciutto sandwich as well as a meat and cheese board filled with the chef’s curated selections. The meal was exceptionally flavorful (and beautiful!) and left us wanting more. On our next visit, we are excited to try salmon tartare, heirloom tomato panzanella, paddlefish caviar and any seasonal inspirational plate Chef Charlotte has prepared for the day.

Upon leaving Crush’d you will be reminded of the neighborhood feel of the restaurant, as guests can also purchase local olive oils, vinegars, canned fish, treats and select wines from their retail boutique. Danville is lucky to have such a wonderful culinary scene for residents to enjoy and Crush’d will certainly be on your list for a weekly night out. See you there!

Crush’d is open daily from 11am - 9pm SundayWednesday (check out their Sunday Brunch!) and 11am-10pm Thursday-Saturday at 312 Railroad Ave. Visit www.crushddanville.com/ for more information or to make a reservation.

Athletes: What Sports Drinks Do To Your Teeth

ACID ERROSION MORE PREVALENT AND DESTRUCTIVE THAN CAVITIES-HOW TO PREVENT

Sports drinks are popular among athletes and individuals engaging in physical activity as they are marketed to provide hydration and replenish electrolytes lost through sweating. However, these beverages can have detrimental effects on dental health due to their acidic and sugary nature and little nutritional value. Here’s what sports drinks can do to your teeth:

1. Erosion of Tooth Enamel: Sports drinks are often acidic, with a pH level that can be lower than that of soda or fruit juice. Regular consumption of acidic beverages can erode the protective enamel layer of the teeth over time. This erosion weakens the teeth, making them more susceptible to decay, sensitivity, and discoloration.

2. Increased Risk of Tooth Decay: Many sports drinks contain high amounts of sugar to improve taste and provide quick energy. Bacteria in the mouth feed on these sugars and produce acids as byproducts, which can lead to the formation of cavities and tooth decay. Even most “diet” or “low-calorie” sports drinks contain acidic additives that create an environment for decay.

3. Dental Sensitivity: Tooth enamel erosion occurs from the acid exposing your dentin, the sensitive inner layer of the tooth, which can cause discomfort or pain when exposed to stimuli.

4. Discoloration: The combination of acid and sugar in sports drinks can affect the appearance of the smile. The loss of enamel you can’t get back. Even whitening treatments won’t be as effective.

Consider the following recommendations:

• Limit or eliminate consumption: Chose water or bubbly water as the primary hydration source whenever possible. Healthy food is better than empty calories in acidic sugary sports drinks.

• Rinse with water: If you consume an occasional sports drink, rinse the mouth with water to help neutralize acids and wash away sugars. Chewing sugar free gum helps salivary flow and neutralizes the mouth.

• Maintain good oral hygiene: Brush teeth after breakfast and before bed with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and visit the dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings.

Day trips and Getaways

TheMurphys, Queen of the Sierra

Here’s what makes Murphys the perfect day trip: In two hours east of Danville you find a town of just over 2,000 in the lower Sierra Nevada overstocked in California folklore, historical buildings, charming stores, stylish restaurants, and, at last count, more than 22 wine tasting rooms.

Called “The Queen of the Sierra,” Murphys blossomed in the formative years of California and became world renowned for the estimated $20 million in gold mined out of the area during the Gold Rush in the mid-19th century. Mark Twain made his stake as a humorist in nearby Angels Camp, site of the famous story “The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” Anyone can see the largest crystalline gold leaf specimen ever found in California’s Mother Lode – 44 pounds in size – at the nearby Ironstone Winery. The gold is still in the hills and creeks but in much smaller amounts, but miners have been replaced by winegrowers, the creeks aren’t panned so much as preserved, and gold can be found in the glasses of chardonnay.

Downtown Murphys consists of Main Street and its many businesses – dress stores, kitchen goods, children’s clothing and an old-fashioned ice cream counter. Many store fronts are made of stone façade dating back more than 170 years. And of course there

are the tasting rooms. Whereas many of the wineries in Napa and Sonoma counties are now part of a conglomerate, Murphys tasting rooms remain very much family-oriented. And you see it in the price: A six-wine sampling cost $14, considerably less than what you find in Napa. “We plowed the ground, we planted the vines, we harvested the grapes and we made the wine,” said Sheri Hendriks, part-owner of Aloria Vineyards as she stood behind the counter in her Main Street room. “When you walk into my tasting room, you see the people who brought the wine to you.” The tasting rooms vary in décor, though “modern loft” – big windows, stone or glazed cement counters, natural wood walls and cabinets – seems to be the common style. Aloria, Broll, Lavender Ridge, Hovey and others all have their own charms.

The Murphy’s Hotel dates back to 1856 and boasts that, among others, Ulysses Grant, Mark Twain, William Randolph Hearst and Charles Boles, aka “Black Bart,” the famous robber of stagecoaches, put their heads on Murphys Hotel pillows. You can see Presidential Suite on the third-floor. It is the sort of town that inspires leisurely strolls, dropping into such places as The Spice Tin to peruse the countless herbs and blends, then saunter into the Man Cave to try on a bowler or newsboy English-style hat.

After a lot of strolling and visiting shops and tasting some wine, the Murphys Hotel seems natural as the place to end the day with a nice meal, but Alchemy and the V Bistro in the Victoria Inn also serve firstrate modern faire. And here is where Murphys can be trouble for those who want to extend a one-day adventure into two. “Calaveras County only has 600 hotels rooms,” pointed out Martin Huberty, the Executive Director of the Calaveras Visitors Bureau. “If you come up, even for one day, it’s best to plan ahead.” That means making dinner and/or hotel reservations. Huberty also added that many visitors find a wonderful selection of Airbnb accommodations available in the region.

Again, plan ahead, and enjoy.

To Buy or Not To Buy?

I’msure we’ve all fallen victim to the Try-On Hauls that plague our Tik Tok For You Page at least once. Videos filled with the newest shirts, jackets, and dresses that a minute ago felt unnecessary to have in your closet, but after watching, you now totally need. I know it can be easy to get sucked into these videos and think to yourself, yes, I should buy that thirty dollar shirt and definitely those exact jeans to go along with it. The problem is that trends are now moving at such a rapid pace with a new “have to have” item popping up every day. A lot of this can be traced back to the many fast fashion brands working to put out new clothes weekly, some even daily.

But how can they create a new item every day? Many fast fashion brands often copy designs from smaller artists who don’t have the platform to fight back. Lots of the jewelry, shirts, pants, and more we see on their websites are stolen directly from small business owners with no ability to make their voices heard or obtain credit for their work. But as more people buy these designs, they have to find a way to keep up with the demand. This can often mean creating supply chains that, although efficient, are extremely dangerous to our environment and have high carbon emissions. With fashion trends moving at a rapid pace, companies work hard to keep up, creating irreversible destruction to our world in the process. Still, one week after your new purchase, the item is now deemed “totally not cool” and you need a new fifty dollar piece to keep up.

This cycle of unsustainability will continue to thrive if we stay unaware of the problem and don’t act. Continuing to purchase, use once, and toss aside these products with little regard to the effects it has on the world and people around us make us perpetrators in these problems. Instead, we can focus on thrifting our clothes, trading with friends, or even donating pieces that don’t fit anymore instead of throwing them away. Finding simple alternatives like this or trying to shop sustainably from places where you know the clothes will last can be extremely important in improving our world. Remember, before buying that new top that you’ve seen everywhere online, try and think a little bit more on whether it’s something you truly need.
