Meet Garrett Steffen
Sparking a Healthy Legacy: Firefighter’s
Fitness Story Ignites Passion for Community and Youth Sports
By Anne Angstenberger, Resident since 2006
provided by the Steffen Family
Biking along the Iron Horse Trail to work, Garrett Steffen truly embraces the lifestyle of a hardworking Westside Danville native. Having grown up in Danville, Garrett graduated from San Ramon Valley High School in 2017. During his time at SRVHS, he played two years of football, as well as Varsity Lacrosse all four years. His team won the NCS Championship and, individually, Garrett was awarded the titles of 1st team EBAL player (twice) and All-American. In between his sophomore and junior years of high school, Garrett was blessed to receive a Division 1 Scholarship to play lacrosse at Bryant University in Rhode Island. But, after one year, sunny California was calling him back home… transferring to Chapman University, where he continued to play lacrosse and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, and a Certificate in Leadership in 2021.
Becoming a firefighter had always been a lifelong goal for Garrett as he had been fortunate to grow up around the fire service since his father, Charlie, is a retired Fire Captain. Garrett states, ”All my life I was able to see how men and women in the fire service held themselves up to the values and philosophies they lived by. The amount of selflessness, integrity, respect, teamwork, and community service they embody was extremely impactful on me.”
In recent years, Garrett has received his degree in Fire Service Technology, became a paramedic, and is currently working as a firefighter/paramedic for Redwood City Fire Department. Garrett feels extremely grateful to be able to serve as a firefighter/ paramedic as well as work alongside men and women he has always looked up to. For this Danville native, there has always been another dream on his mind…spreading his knowledge and passion for health and fitness to his hometown community. For the past 11 years, Garrett has been working out at Iron Horse Fitness and dreamed about owning a gym of his own one day. “When the opportunity came up early in 2024 to buy Iron Horse Fitness, I couldn’t pass on owning the gym and transforming it to everything I have always wanted it to be. I had been preparing for this moment for years as I became a licensed personal trainer, nutrition coach, and also earned certifications with the CHEK Institute, a program that teaches a systematic and effective approach to holistic health for fitness professionals.”
For the past several months, Garrett has been focused on building new life into the gym, now named Iron Horse Fitness and Sports Performance. He wants to create a space where all neighbors, from every age and skill level, can achieve their fitness goals. As the name implies, the location of the gym is right off the trail (you can
walk or bike in off the trail entrance) or even park on Railroad Ave. and walk in as well. It is the ideal spot for Danville residents to pop in and work out with their downtown neighbors. As an athlete himself, Garrett has a passion for helping the youth achieve their personal fitness best. He recently created the new “Youth Sports Performance Training Classes” to help the younger Danville generations gain strength, speed, and confidence towards their personal goals. One fun fact about Garrett, is that the entire Steffen family is involved and helps operate the gym on a daily basis! His sister, Shannon, runs the marketing, media relations, and partnerships. His Mom, Julie, can be seen manning the front desk and helping with the bookkeeping, while Dad, Charlie, trains new members and even teaches some of the weekly classes while Garrett is working as a firefighter/paramedic. Garrett loves that “it is a team effort. We all love the health and wellness industry, so it is a seamless fit for our family.”
When Garrett is not busy working at the gym or at the firehouse, you will likely find him running, hiking, ATV riding, or training in endurance sports. He has even competed in an ultramarathon, placing 15th in the Kodiak 50 mile Ultramarathon in Big Bear, CA. This consisted of over 12 hours of running up and down mountain elevations ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 ft. Garrett loves to explore Yosemite and the Tahoe region as much as possible, as he is a big fan of our beautiful national parks and forests. But at the end of the day, being home on the westside of Danville brings a unique perk of having these beautiful places very close to home. Garrett loves how Danville has numerous hiking and running locations
which allow him to find “peace as well as train for new goals.” The tight knit community of Danville constantly reminds him that he is “surrounded by hard working neighbors who are always willing to help me, especially when it comes to business advice.” Please be sure to say hi to Garrett when you see him around town…you will likely see him with his four-yearold Yellow English Labrador, Hank. “When he’s not sleeping or swimming at home, Hank can be found hiking Las Trampas, exploring the Iron Horse Trail, or hanging out at the gym where he looks forward to pets, belly rubs, and treats.” Sounds like a great day in Danville for all!

Real Estate in a Season of Change
By Lisa Hopkins-Cochran, REALTOR® at Compass
It’s almost autumn; it’s a time that brings beauty and the anticipation of change. Locally, it’s also a season that usually sees a fairly strong real estate market, at least in September & October. Beyond the change in season, there are a few other big changes this year that may or may not have an impact on the market. Only time will tell, but let’s take a look at what’s ahead.
Did you know that a major change was made to the structure of the national real estate industry in August of this year? One of the most significant changes is that every buyer represented by an NAR-affiliated agent is now required to sign a Buyer Representation Agreement formalizing the relationship between the buyer and broker before touring properties. There are various types of agreements to meet the needs of consumers. In addition, if you are visiting an open house that is hosted by an NAR-affiliated agent, you will now be asked to sign either an Open House Non-Agency Disclosure and Sign In form, or a buyer representation agreement, prior to touring the home. The Non-Agency disclosure will limit what an agent can discuss with you. Some of the forms will create a contract between the buyer and the broker, obligating the buyer to pay the broker’s professional fee. I’ve always been a strong believer in reading first and making sure that you fully understand what you are signing. This philosophy applies now, more than ever.
Interest rates soared in 2022, and there has been hope that 2024 would bring some relief from those rates. Interest rates were expected to be lowered earlier in the year, but that did not happen. Based on recent economic indicators, there is a strong indication that rates will likely drop in September. Only time will tell (this is a print article, written well in advance). A significant drop would likely spur the market, as many more buyers would be able to afford a home.
Another significant event that will likely impact the market this fall is the presidential election. Please note that the impact is to the market, and not necessarily to property values. Historically, there has been no
significant correlation between the outcome of a presidential election and home values. My career has spanned 8 presidential elections. I can tell you that prior to every election, many buyers put their search on hold sometime in September or October, stating that they have decided to wait until after the election to buy a home. I’ve also seen buyers take advantage of that same market - getting into their dream home, with a lot less competition. Great opportunity can often be found by not following the crowd.
Every home buying or selling experience is unique. If the thought of evaluating your options has you feeling overwhelmed, please feel free to reach out to me at 925-964-5010 or via email at Lisa.Hopkins@Compass.com for a custom analysis of your options. Even if you’re not planning to move, I’m happy to help by providing you with relevant data, enabling you to make a well informed decision. It’s never too early to start planning for success.

Are you a planner? What’s your plan for your teeth?
By Dr. Cynthia E. Stephenson, DDS
In our culture we spend so much of our time planning. With a million things going on, is your dental care just one more thing? Let us help.
As we approach Fall, there is a lot to plan with school, sports, jobs, clubs, social engagements, etc. Many people don’t think about how a quick plan for your dental care can save you time and money this time of year.
We don’t want to guide health by insurance coverage and the reality is that dental insurance is just a coupon and won’t fund all of your dental needs. But, if you have dental insurance or a health savings plan, it’s not nothing, and with a little planning you can avoid leaving real money on the table. If you don’t use it, you lose it. If you have some preventive dental care needed, there is a strategy in spreading care over years and maximizing dental and FSA/HSA benefits and getting the care you need before it becomes emergent and you have less choices, and more costs.
Example: You have a few areas of your mouth that have older restorations that are wearing out or won’t last forever. Consider
having your dentist evaluate the priorities and take one quadrant (25% of your mouth) and addressing it with high quality, sealed effective restorations that could last 30+ years. Over a few short years, your mouth with older breaking down restorations is now stable, healthy and lasting. This is one of the most cost-effective ways to approach dental care. One less thing to worry about.
With one visit and a good exam, your dentist can help you plan out the remainder of this year and check the box.
Take advantage of planning now so you can have an effective plan for the remainder of this year, and well into your future.
Tater Tot Salad
By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010
OK,
I’ll say it out loud…Tik Tok made me do it. About a month ago, I was scrolling through my phone late at night, pretending that I wasn’t tired, when this recipe video for potato salad using tater tots came up. I watched it all the way through and thought it was so ridiculous. There’s no way this could taste good. Then a day later, another video for the same dish popped up, and then another one after that. I took this as a sign from the culinary gods that I needed to see what all the fuss was about. And boy, was it worth it.
Why do I love this? It’s creamy, it’s crispy and it’s bright from the fresh herbs. Not only do I like this more than conventional potato salad, but it was also less work. No need to pull out the old potato peeler for this dish. However, there is one downside to this recipe. It needs to be served right away. No making ahead and no saving the leftovers. It sadly has a short lifespan. Is it a ton of calories? Yes. Is it super rich and indulgent? Absolutely. Is it the best thing you’ll ever serve at a Labor Day party? You bet your tater tots!
Tater tot salad
Serves: 8-12
You will need;
• A 2 pound bag of frozen tater tots.
• 10 strips of bacon
• 2/3 C. Sliced green onion
For the dressing
• 2/3 C. Mayo
• 1/2 C. Sour cream
• 1/2 C. Plain Greek yogurt
• 4 garlic, minced
• 1/3 C. White wine vinegar
• 1/3 C. Fresh dill, finely chopped (and yes, fresh makes
• 1/2 C. Finally chopped red onion
• 1 C. Shredded cheddar cheese
Putting it together; Prepare the tater tots according to the package. Lay the bacon strips on a lined cookie sheet and cook the bacon in the oven at the same time as the tots. The bacon should take 12 to 15 minutes. once the bacon is crispy, pull it out and chop it into bite-size pieces and set aside. Remove the tater tots half way through their cooking time and using a flash spatula, carefully smash and flatten each tot. This will help make them extra crispy. Place the tater tots back in the oven to finish cooking or until they appear crispy. Season with a pinch of salt and set aside to cool. In a large bowl, combined all the ingredients for the dressing with a whisk until well combined. Fold in the green onion and red onion. Fold in the cooled tater tots and mix well. Transfer to a serving dish and top with the bacon and shredded cheese.
a big difference)
• 1/2 C. Fresh flat leaf parsley, finely chopped 1 teaspoon lemon pepper
• 1 dash each of Worcestershire, cayenne and paprika
• Salt and pepper to taste

US Cryotherapy
By Kathryn Rapp
My journey with US Cryotherapy-Danville began during a challenging period of my life. I was diagnosed with breast cancer last fall, and I knew I had to find ways to reduce my inflammation and manage symptoms while I was undergoing chemotherapy without the need for more medical interventions. After researching treatments, I walked into US Cryotherapy, became a member and immediately found immense relief in the center’s menu of treatments to reduce inflammation and support my overall well-being naturally. This personal experience ignited a passion within me for the remarkable benefits not just for me, but also for the Danville community who helped me and my family get through my cancer experience.
I was declared cancer free in the spring of this year and soon after made the life changing decision to leave my corporate career to pursue something truly meaningful. As a business executive, I knew my strength is in running companies, so I decided to explore local business that I believed in wholeheartedly to own and operate. Because I believed that the treatments at US Cryotherapy-Danville really helped in managing my cancer, I approached the previous owners of US Cryotherapy-Danville, the Cmelaks. They recognized my passion for the center and I took the reins in June of 2024, along with two other Bay Area families, the Davises and Lius. Since then, my days have been filled with purpose and fulfillment, as we bring wellness and recovery to the Danville and San Ramon communities.
US Cryotherapy-Danville offers a range of services, including whole body cryotherapy, red light therapy, PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field therapy), hydromassage, Normatec compression, infrared sauna, and localized cryotherapy. We also offer facials, body slimming, and body contouring treatments. Our mission is to help members of the community to achieve their individual health and wellness goals by providing a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone can experience the benefits of their therapies. Whether you’re an athlete looking for enhanced recovery, someone managing a chronic condition like me, or simply seeking to improve your overall health, US Cryotherapy-Danville is here to support your recovery and well-being in a holistic and natural way.
I am so excited to be a part of this vibrant community and to contribute to the health and well-being of our residents. Thank you for welcoming and supporting me and my family, and I look forward to continuing this journey with all of you.

When Grandma or Grandpa Has Alzheimer’s
By Eunice O’Farrell, Executive Director, Carefield Pleasanton
In honor of Grandparents’ Day on September 10th it’s important to recognize the relationships between your children, their grandparents, and what to do if Grandma or Grandpa are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Watching a beloved grandparent change due to memory loss can be challenging for children. Here are some tips:
Open and honest communication is key. Explain to children, in simple terms, what Alzheimer’s is and how it affects people. Remind them that although Grandma or Grandpa might forget things, they still love them very much.
Create positive experiences. Focus on the things your loved one can still do and enjoy. Spending quality time together, engaging in shared activities, and creating new memories can help your children maintain a strong grandparent-child bond.
Encourage expression of feelings. Your children might feel sad, confused, or angry. Validate their emotions and let them know it’s okay to feel this way. Providing opportunities for them to talk about their feelings, whether through art, writing, or conversation, can be beneficial.
Involve children in caregiving (ageappropriately). Simple tasks like helping with puzzles, reading stories, or playing games can be rewarding for both the child and the grandparent. This can also help children feel involved and connected.
Seek support. Consider talking to a child psychologist or joining a support group for families dealing with Alzheimer’s. These resources can provide valuable guidance and allow children to connect with others going through similar experiences.
As an adult child sandwiched between both generations, it’s also important for you to seek help as well. Connect with your local
memory care resources, such as the team at Carefield Pleasanton, to help.
Join Carefield Pleasanton’s monthly Caregiver Support Group - contact the team by calling (925) 750-8744 or visit www.CarefieldPleasanton.com today.

Understanding The College List: Planning For Success

Doing research and road trips to visit colleges can be the funnest but also the most tedious process in planning out your child’s college journey. Of course you want the best fitting school for your child, but what does that really mean? As a transitional and executive college coach for thousands of students nationally and internationally, the majority of my clients have an idea but really do not fully understand the choices until we talk and navigate what the university will provide for the client.
The first step: How will you create your college list? Do you have a plan to decide on your reach, your target and your anchor universities to be sure that your child has choices at the end of this process? And more fundamentally, what are the unique skills sets that your student is looking for to be sure that their next four years are an incredible journey with a competitive education, powerful activities, and lifelong friendships?
For my readers who do not know the terms: Reach, Target and Anchor Universities - this is the list that divides up the difficulty level of entering each college. Prior to the last two years, the reach schools’ acceptance rates were approximately 13% or less. But from this last admission cycle, the university acceptance rate can rise as high as 25% depending on the students’ chosen majors. The target universities are universities that match your child’s GPA or slightly higher and comparable SAT or ACT scores for colleges that factor acceptance rate using these test scores. The anchor schools can still be great schools, but should not be a lot of work for your student to enter. Most state colleges fall in this category, except for CSU San Diego, some majors at San Jose State, Long Beach State, and definitely Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This college oftentimes is a reach campus due to its engineering, computer science, and other STEM majors. The campus also has a bottoms up curriculum, which means that the student enters their major immediately freshman year. That being said, the student cannot switch majors once they have been accepted unless it is in the umbrella of the major they have picked.
I highly recommend that as you work with your student, you set up this list. The goal is to build a list that includes what is important for your child. In my conversations with admissions officers that consult with EYHLifeCoach, the list can be critical for your child’s success. Also if your child has many interests, a liberal arts education may be the best choice. This choice will not limit your child in entering the medical profession or being an engineering specialist, but it will support the uniqueness of your child. Oftentimes, the student following their passion and their talents makes the student much more competitive than cookie cutting the typical road.
EYHLifeCoach has a team of experts that are here to guide you in this process. If your child is in high school, no matter what grade, we can help you through this process to empower your child’s successes. We look forward to hearing from you.

Downtown Construction
By Jenn Starnes, Town of Danville Public Information Officer
TheTown of Danville began construction activities for the Downtown Master Plan Catalyst Project the first week of April. The project represents a $4.1 million investment, and furthers the Town’s goals to continually invigorate the Downtown area. The project includes pedestrian safety improvements and community gathering spaces, and the construction plan prioritizes continued access and enjoyment of Downtown Danville over the course of the project.
The initial Catalyst Project is part of a nine-component strategy to enhance the historic downtown. This first component includes traffic calming and beautification improvements at five intersections along Hartz Avenue, from School Street to Linda Mesa Avenue, as well as improvements near the Village Theatre. There will also be improvements to Prospect Park Plaza, an outdoor space owned by the Town near Starbucks on Hartz Avenue. The first project will be at the intersection of Church Street and Hartz Avenue, and construction is expected to be complete in late fall. The Town has taken steps to minimize impacts on Downtown businesses and visitors:
• All businesses will remain open and accessible: As we invest in the long-term success of Downtown Danville, we will ensure that the many wonderful shops, restaurants, and services remain open and accessible throughout the project.
• Hartz Avenue will remain open: Not only will businesses be accessible, but Hartz Avenue will not need to be closed until the very end of the project, and even then only for overnight paving. There may be some lane narrowing and other traffic flow adjustments, but the road will be open.
• When paving happens, it will be overnight: At the very end of the project, Hartz Avenue will be freshly paved to finish off the renovation. Paving work will be scheduled to happen overnight, to avoid major traffic disruptions.
• Construction will be in phases, intersection-by-intersection: The project focuses on intersection improvements for pedestrian safety, which means that even the minimal disruption of construction will be isolated at any given time. Within each intersection, work will also be limited to one side of the street at a time, whenever possible. Most construction activities will happen Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.: A major part of daily life for so many residents is strolling Downtown Danville, especially evenings and weekends. Visit your favorite businesses and check in on the construction progress without active construction happening.
• Downtown community events will go on as planned: While there may be some adjustments to locations, summer events such as the Devil Mountain Run, Hot Summer Sunday Car Show, and the Kiwanis-Danville 4th of July Parade will happen as scheduled. More details on modifications will be available closer to the event dates.
The Catalyst Project represents the culmination of a years-long planning effort to revitalize the downtown experience and adapt to evolving community needs. The initial project responds to the highest priorities highlighted in the Danville 2022 Downtown Master Plan Update: more community gathering space, stronger connections to and through downtown, enhancing pedestrian safety, and opportunities to incorporate arts and culture. The 2022 update was developed after significant public input that included a survey, public meetings, and stakeholder interviews.
The Town Council awarded the project contract in February to Grade Tech, Inc. following a public bid process. Community members can follow the project, provide feedback, and review progress on the Downtown Master Plan project page at www.danvilletowntalks.org
