THE DREAM OF THE PERFECT CABERNET SAUVIGNON originating from a land of destiny and achieved through great imagination.

“There is a relentlessness required to make a wine like Patrimony. No resource, not an ounce of effort is spared in its pursuit. But the soul of the wine—that comes not from a heavy hand, but rather a discerning touch. We are ever mindful of this balancing act.” — DANIEL J. DAO U , Proprietor/ Winemaker

IN THE SANTA LUCIA MOUNTAINS west of Paso Robles is a gem cut from the rough of the coastal forest, ascending to an elevation of 2,200 feet. This is DAOU Mountain in the heart of the Adelaida District. Hailed long ago as a winemaking frontier of immeasurable potential, the mountain nevertheless remained uncharted for decades. We were stunned to discover a terroir this pristine. It stirred the imagination, calling on us to unlock its long-held promise and to create a new benchmark in Cabernet Sauvignon. Patrimony is the culmination of this quest.

E S TAT E

DAOU MOUNTAIN towers over the coastal range, its precipitous slopes reaching nearly 60 degrees. The soils are composed of calcareous clay and limestone, comparable to Bordeaux’s Right Bank. The climate closely mirrors St. Helena in Napa Valley. This providential combination of elements produces some of the highest phenolics in the world—fostering an immensity of color, depth and structure that is enhanced by the exacting viticulture provided to Patrimony.

PATRIMONY FRUIT is handpicked from terraced vineyard rows that exhibit remarkable character. Each grape undergoes state-of-the-art optical sorting to ensure absolute flavor integrity. Fermentation proceeds exclusively with wild yeasts cultured from DAOU Mountain, imbuing the wine with native texture and character. The wine is made entirely from free-run juice. Maturation unfolds for 30 months in the rarest of weathered French oak barrels. Only after further aging in the bottle for one year do all of these aspects coalesce into complete symmetry. The result is a most pure expression of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape—abundantly layered, extravagant in depth, and intricately poised to the end.

BARRIQUE S

THE PATRIMONY AGING PROGRAM is built around the most coveted French oak barrels that are accessible only through personal relationships with top cooperages. These barrels are: (1) Taransaud T5 barrels coopered from five-year seasoned staves cut from centuries-old forest trees; (2) limited Tonnellerie Sylvain barrels made from 362-year-old fine-grain oak, originating from a forestry program initiated during the reign of Louis XIV; only 35 of these barrels were produced from two fallen oaks in the Futaie des Clos plot of the BercĂŠ royal forest; and (3) a proprietary DAOU barrel created from rare, super fine-grain pink oak, or bois rosĂŠ, that is also seasoned in the elements for five years. This proprietary barrel is custom toasted with a low flame to avoid char and ultimately accentuate the wine with extraordinary length. Collectively, these barrels provide for seamless oak integration and staggering complexity over a maturation period of 30 months, all without encroaching upon the pure qualities of our DAOU Mountain fruit.

CA L L I N G

“Our family comes from the Old World, where the rites of fellowship, hospitality and luxury have been ingrained for more than 2,000 years. Patrimony is an extension of this inheritance—and a desire to share it with others.” — GEO RGES J. DAOU, Proprietor

IN THE END, this land is not ours—it is an inheritance forged by faith, family and heritage. We are called to be its shepherds, and to prepare it for those who come after. Patrimony is the summit of this calling. With this wine, we aim to provide pleasure in the deepest sense of the word, signifying purity and grace. And through such pleasure, we achieve purpose: to leave a lasting mark that all may enjoy.

IMPRESSIONS

“.. Rivaling some of the best from Napa.

— JAMES L AU BE

Jeb Dunnuck 98 points “Coming from the top blocks of the estate, the 2014 Patrimony offers a fresh, gorgeously focused, concentrated style to go with classic crème de cassis, blackcurrants, graphite and scorched earth.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 97 points “Intense black currants and plum preserves scents with underlying crushed mulberries, black cherries and blackberries. The palate is big, full-bodied, rich and packed with flavor layers, framed by firm grainy tannins and a lively acid line, finishing long and savory.” — Lisa Perrotti-Brown Wine Spectator 95 points “An ultrarich, deep and profound effort, packed with tiers of blackberry, currant and licorice flavors, jazzy, mocha-scented oak and a long, detailed finish. For all the weight and size, this comes across as elegant and polished.” — James Laube

This full bodied wine is expansive and layered with purity and accompanying notes of crème de cassis, licorice, dried herbs, toasted spice, wild mushrooms and ash. The mouthfeel is astonishingly deep, concentrated and commanding, yet balanced and sleek with stunning elegance. The mid-palate texture is broad and dense and the finish is pervasive, persistent and powerful.
