Extensive research based project for Valentine, NE
Exploratory design of a plaza in Lincoln, NE

places in the making For this research-based project, our vertical studio worked with the community and stakeholders to bring rural community prosperity through economic development, demographic renewal, and placemaking. Places in the making was a service learning project; dedicated to the community of Valentine and funded through the Rural Futures Institute. This was a semester-long project that provided deep insight into extensive research, inventory and analysis, and the community process of a project. With Places in the Making being a semester-long project, we had to separate it into three different phases. Phase 1 would look into the literature that explains aspects that are considered during design and case studies to bring to Valentine.
Phase 2 looks into Valentine speciďŹ cally and research the categories we felt important to know and understand. This leads to the framework of Valentine; the decision process of projects and plans. Phase 3 was designing these projects pick beforehand. My project, with a team, focused on Main Street in Valentine. We worked together to understand Main Street through inventory and analysis. The research and inventory and analysis, with goals and objectives, set the needs and opportunities for phase 3, or the design phase, of the project. My team designed and focused on three separate areas of Main Street: north parkway, adventure avenue, and south end that includes the south end community center.

pupper park This project explores a design possibility of a current, underwhelming, plaza located in the downtown area of Lincoln, Nebraska. The basis of my design comes from understanding the framework of the location. This includes circulation, access, and an organizational structure. With the knowledge of the framework, I could work within these boundaries to design based within the built environment. After researching and performing inventory and analysis, it was obvious that the area was in need of a dog park with open green space. This design incorporates features that are necessary for a dog park; two spaces designated for two different sized dogs, small and big, water management which includes

recycling water for dogs to use, and areas for the other mammal, humans. With a comprehension of the need for seating and observation, there is a space at each dog park with benches dedicated to the owners of dogs. Also, in this area of downtown Lincoln, there is plenty of food options but a lack of seating. My design involves a public dining area for those in need of accommodation. There is also private dining for the restaurant inside the plaza to be able to serve alcohol. Pupper park is a solution to a need in downtown Lincoln based on adequate research and understanding the built environment which shapes with the complexities of this modern and native landscape.

professional work After completing my third year of the Landscape Architecture program, I decided to take a year off school to gain real-world experience through an extended internship. During this time I was tasked to do many things that range from menial tasks to critical assignments. I’ve learned many new programs and design principles to consider through the mentorship of two licensed Landscape Architects. One of the more critical assignments was given to me at the beginning of my internship. This was to design a small park in an upcoming development site in Houston, Texas. Before I was set off to design, I took a day to study graphics styles and hand-drawn methods to include in the assignment.
This park went through many phases of design solutions, or iterations, in the collaborative environment of the studio. The final design was presented to the client with enthusiastic comments. During this internship, I learned how to excel in AutoCAD and proficiently create technical drawings with the extension Land F/X. This has given me a solid technical foundation with grading and basic construction documents through the typical sequence of design. In my off time, I taught myself 3D modeling programs such as Lumion and SketchUp to help advance my graphics communication and production skills. Overall, my internship has been a success and I’ve learned greatly from my experience.
