DEAR DARDEN STUDENTS, ALUMNI, EMPLOYER PARTNERS AND FRIENDS,
The University of Virginia Darden School of Business is pleased, for the first time in one publication, to present the career outcomes from Darden’s three degree programs: the full-time MBA, the Executive MBA and — our most recent addition — the Master of Science in business analytics (MSBA).
B
ut more than data, this brochure presents compelling success stories of the purpose-driven students who unlocked their “whys” through meaningful career opportunities. We also share new, exciting achievements and progress at Darden’s Career Center. With each passing year, I am more and more convinced that the center's team of career coaches, recruiting specialists and operations staff is the best in the business. Here are a few of our accomplishments from the 2018–19 academic year. Darden Career and Academic Rankings Continue to Rise The 2018–19 academic year marked another full of superlative-worthy rankings. Darden’s full-time MBA rose in every ranking of programs in which the School participates, and to start the 2019–20 academic year, moved up to No. 5 overall in Bloomberg Businessweek.
rooms. The interview rooms feature digital displays and high-definition video cameras to enhance virtual meetings and interviews with companies recruiting remotely. Our D.C. area location housed alumni networking opportunities, crossindustry recruiting events with top employers, and provided center coaches with the space to offer over 270 hours of on-site career coaching at 30 residencies. Strengthening the School’s Career Curriculum
Take a look at the rankings list adjacent to this letter for the full line-up of impressive achievements and accolades. Examining Career Outcomes From the Executive MBA and MSBA Programs For the first time ever, we are pleased to release career outcome data reported by the most recent graduates of the Executive MBA program and the MSBA program. It is especially impressive that the Darden and UVA McIntire School of Commerce teams were able to collect this data from the very first cohort of MSBA graduates. These strong employment outcomes will prove invaluable to prospective students, alumni and recruiting partners in the years to come. I encourage you to explore that compelling data within this report. New Spaces, Places and Platforms to Engage Recruiters in Charlottesville, the DC Area and Beyond In spring 2019, the center moved to the second floor of the Abbott Center on Darden Grounds in Charlottesville. The move brings our services closer to students, providing them with ease of access, and facilitates employer partners’ movement throughout our facilities. We renovated space in the Abbott Center to provide visiting recruiters with a new lounge and new, private interview
Last summer, the center launched a self-paced online program, titled Career Development WhyFinding, or “CDWhy” for short. In response to the needs of Darden’s recruiting partners, the center developed the curriculum to help Darden’s Class of 2021 prepare for the MBA internship and job search earlier than ever. The program helped students gain strong, competitive competencies in their sense of self, recruiting presence and understanding of MBA hiring industries. Based on the success of CDWhy for full-time MBA students, the center will expand the program for Executive MBA and MSBA students this year. For the Executive MBA, career coaches now partner closely with Connie Dunlop, executive director for professional advancement, to deliver content that is stronger and more relevant than ever for Darden’s executive format students. On behalf of Darden and the Career Center, we thank you for your partnership as we put our purpose — our why — to work. Best regards,
Jeff McNish Assistant Dean for Career Development +1-434-297-7971 McNishJ@darden.virginia.edu

“Everyone came in with their expertise. Whether they were looking to climb the ladder or pivot into something else, it was amazing working with my classmates going through the case method and just absorbing and learning from other people who think so differently from each other, because everyone is from different spaces. For me, that was definitely the advantage over a health care MBA exclusively for physicians. With the increasingly complex climate of health care today, the skill set acquired from a formal business education will serve me well for a number of activities including entrepreneurship, administration and operations.”

“Darden made me very comfortable working in an industry (hospitality) and in a function (internal consulting) in which I had no prior experience. The nature of the general management curriculum and the case method discussions in each class helped me learn a lot quickly, but also made me comfortable with being uncomfortable. I learned how to ask the right questions to quickly familiarize myself with new-to-me concepts and ideas.”

“The MBA has allowed me to pursue my interests, and it has also exposed me to exciting career opportunities that I otherwise would not have known about. Darden is a case method school, with an emphasis on experiential learning, and this approach works better for me. I have learned far more from my classmates than I would have from memorizing textbooks. The military was an amazing opportunity for personal growth, but I left lacking business acumen, and the MBA has helped me fill in these gaps.”

“I came to business school to gain a financial foundation, something I knew was integral to my future growth and success in the commercial real estate industry. I had not given much thought to the soft-skill classes I would take, but I can say now that I am so grateful for what I learned in each of those classes, and I recognize them as equally valuable to my future career growth.”

While applying to business school, I was keenly aware of this given my career goals. However, I ultimately chose Darden due to its deep alumni pool working in the real estate industry. It was this highly responsive and engaged alumni community that ultimately enabled me to understand that my career goals best aligned with the real estate investment space and to source internship and full-time employment opportunities.”

“The Career Center was a pivotal resource during my career exploration at Darden. As a career switcher, I entered business school seeking to explore and discover other industries where I could succeed. The center provided guidance through this process and was a sounding board as I navigated the recruitment process and new career possibilities. The support of the center was pivotal in helping me navigate the career switching process, gain confidence and refine my approach to be the strongest applicant possible. Their mentorship was essential in my success finding an internship and full-time job that were in a new field and were personally and professionally rewarding.”

“There’s a great Darden community out on the West Coast, and you have the opportunity to meet them not just through social events but engage with them via career coaching and mentoring. There are Darden people in all different aspects of what’s happening in the San Francisco Bay Area, and to be in the middle of it at a wellrespected startup backed by big time VC was an incredible experience.”
