OPENING NIGHT

The Red Dusty Road A Celebration of 40 Years on the Road with Bunna Lawrie and Coloured Stone Join us as we launch Darebin Music Feast 2017 with this very special event, celebrating Australia’s premier Aboriginal band, Coloured Stone. Formed in 1977 by lead singer and songwriter, Bunna Lawrie, Coloured Stone combine rock, ska and reggae with a unique Aboriginal sound incorporating traditional instruments such as clap sticks, didgeridoo, bundawuthada (gong stone) and traditional language. Originally from Koonibba, South Australia on the Nullarbor Plains, they are now recognised worldwide, having performed at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Womadelaide, Big Day Out, Woodford Folk Festival, Barunga Festival, Rainbow Serpent Festival and many, many more. Joined by past and present band members and some very special guests, including Shane Howard, Kutcha Edwards, Bart Willoughby, John John Miller and Yung Warriors, the band will take you on a musical journey spanning 40 years. From Black Boy to the Sea Shepherd song, from 1977 until 2017, this is history in the making.

To close out this year’s Darebin Music Feast, the Preston Reservoir Bowls Club will once again throw open its doors for the biggest suburban shindig of the year: The Reservoir Stomp. It’s an event run by locals for locals…and anyone else that’s ever been too afraid to venture beyond Bell Street to attend a gig. The Stomp celebrates Reservoir’s diverse talent base, with more than 20 of its finest exponents of funk, soul, salsa, garage, honky-tonk, hip hop, dance, comedy and indie rock. To top it off, this year’s Stomp will host the Grand Final of Reservoir’s first ever local talent quest – REZ FACES – judged by a celebrity panel, plus there’ll be barefoot bowls, food trucks and drinks at 1970s prices. This was the smash hit of Darebin Music Feast 2016 – be sure to book early! THE FAUVES, DAMIAN COWELL’S DISCO MACHINE, EMMA DONOVAN & THE PUTBACKS, QUARTER STREET, PUGSLEY BUZZARD, SAINT JUDE, MCs RANDY (Ricketts Lane ABC TV) and EMMA PEEL (PBS FM), MURRAY WIGGLE & WALLY MEANIE’S BUBBLEGUM MACHINE FEATURING MEMBERS FROM THE SPAZZYS, DAVE GRANEY & THE CORAL SNAKES and THE MEANIES, PLUS: BARRY DICKINS, OUTER URBAN ZONE 2 CREW, THE MEESEEKS, REZ FACES TALENT QUEST AND MORE.

AMPLIFY 2017

Mana Mana is a live music event that emphasises queerness and First Nations people. ‘Mana’ means ‘spiritual power, authority, prestige’. By handing the mic to emerging musicians who are queer / femme / non-binary / First Peoples / Pasifika / people of colour, this event empowers these young marginalised people to reclaim their mana. Ultimately, this will be a celebration of resilience, and one hell of a party! Curated and produced by Daisy Catterall under the mentorship of Bexx D (LISTEN).

This event was produced through AMPLIFY, Darebin Music Feast’s new Event Producer Mentorship. A targeted professional development opportunity, AMPLIFY seeks to address inequality in the music industry by supporting and amplifying lesser heard voices. Each year, AMPLIFY will offer a targeted group of Darebin-based, early-career music event producers access to mentoring and the opportunity to program and produce a feature event as part of Darebin Music Feast. In 2017, AMPLIFY was open to early-career female, trans and/or gender non-conforming music event producers who live, work or study in the City of Darebin.

The Megaphone Project Saturday 21 October 6pm – midnight Northcote Town Hall – 189 High St, Northcote

The Megaphone Project is an interactive, site-responsive installation that explores sound and physical play. A field of striking red megaphones collect people’s voices that then return unexpectedly via a custom wireless network. Weaving through the field of megaphones, the audience creates a lively world of private and public broadcast that is all of their own invention, assisted by artist David Wells.

Full $15 Concession $10

The Megaphone Project is created by Darebin artists Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey. It has toured extensively nationally and internationally for the past decade, including The Kennedy Centre, USA; New Vision Arts Festival, Hong Kong; ANTI Festival, Finland; Sonica, Glasgow; and Sydney Opera House, with audiences of over 120,000 people. For its Darebin premiere, the artists will collect sounds unique to the city, including contributions from local musicians and students in the Woiwurrung language program at Thornbury Primary School, resulting in a sonic snapshot of the City of Darebin.

Bookings (03) 9481 9500 or www.musicfeast.com.au Limited tickets available at the door. Transport Tram 86, Stop 31
